Twilight alum joins First Class

Edi Gathegi, who portrayed one of the evil vampires, Laurent, in the Twilight Saga franchise is joining X-Men: First Class as Darwin. Real name Armando Munoz, he has the power of “reactive evolution,” which allows him to adapt to any situation or environment. Sort of like, should he be sucked into the vacuum of space, he doesn’t need oxygen. Or if it’s incredibly dark, he gains night vision and so on.

I think this is interesting that they’re putting in a somewhat new mutant in the movie when this film is supposed to concentrate on the early adventures of the X-team, but I guess I should have guess considering Fox’s cavalier attitude towards x-continuity.

So readers and x-fans, what do you think of the new addition?

Technically, Darwin isn’t new in the Marvel U. He was part of the crew that was sent to save the original X-Men before Wolverine’s crew came in. He went MIA with Vulcan after that.

As for the movie, they are in the too many mutants zone. I guess they have to use as many as possible, so Marvel doesn’t get any control back to put any of them in Avenger movies.

    Monetta,
I would say anybody created in the last four years is still somewhat new, especially in the comic world :)

I don’t see the problem. What I do see is the studio bringing a bit of racial diversity to what was originally a lily-white X-team back in the day, and doing it with a more recent character who was, from inception, retroactively added to X-Men history.

This post is a good example of the trouble old books have being adapted to modern times. People would have complained if one of the main cast was made something other than white, but then people complain when new characters get retroactively added to that time period. And I think many would agree that it’s better to bring racial diversity through new characters rather than revising old ones.

I’m not saying you intended anything racial here, Lans, but since his inception, Darwin WAS tied to a much earlier X-men era. So what does it matter that he’s a character that was created more recently?

Dave: I guess it’s because in my mind I had envisioned the actual EARLY years of X-Men history, in a sort of reboot in a way. I know now that isn’t the case with this movie and I guess the mirage of getting what I want has disappeared. That’s all. I almost wish they had just pulled the trigger and made a New Mutants movie.

Well, as long as they don’t try to introduce Cannonball & Sunspot into this movie, they should be fine. Granted, Emma Frost is Silver Fox’s sister in this movie universe, so I wouldn’t be surprised.

  6. Ed Says:

Well, they ARE rebooting it, seeing as there’s a new, younger Professor X, etc. In fact, if the disregard for continuity includes ignoring chunks of the existing movie continuity, then it’s an even harder reboot than first anticipated.
Besides, if a classic original member like Iceman can be one of the younger crew in the previous, in-movie-story-chronology “later” X-Movies, there’s no reason that a latter-day-creation-in-the-books can’t be placed earlier in the movie timeline if this is the movie they want to introduce him in.
Besides, none of this is as bad as the characters in X3 given names from the comics then just arbitrarily given powers and appearances that bore no relation to the originals.
