Speculation, activate! For those who haven’t checked out the Avengers animated trailer on the Mothership, take a peek. But what interests me a little bit is taking a look at the small-screen cast:
For those keeping score at home, that’s Hawkeye, the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man and Thor — all of whom will be in the Avengers movie. But then you’ve also got some additional characters, like Giant-Man, the Wasp and the Black Panther.
What interests me is this: Considering that this show is likely one that’s meant to springboard off the 2012 movie, is it likely that we might see some of these other characters in the film version? Not seen in this image, but seen in the trailer, is also the Black Widow and Nick Fury (albeit Nick Fury Classic, not Ultimate Samuel L. Jackson Nick Fury). The cartoon is slated to come out this fall. Speculators, sound off!

What’s up with the godawful 80s power ballad theme?
July 28th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
When did Brainiac invade the Marvel Universe?
July 28th, 2010 at 1:48 pm
Not necessarily. We won’t see Ant-Man either (and probably not Wasp). But we will see Black Widow, who isn’t pictured here.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Yikes! That trailer looked liked it came straight from the 80s!
That theme tune is godawful indeed!
July 28th, 2010 at 2:09 pm
Although it is a cool line up!
July 28th, 2010 at 2:10 pm
A Black Panther film should probably be a no-brainer. Long-standing character, interesting backstory, and yet room for interpretation and improvement.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:15 pm
Why, why, why can’t Marvel improve their cartoon’s “style”. It looks like crap…but I can’t wait to watch it.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:18 pm
I doubt the cartoon will duplicate the movie’s cast, as the movie’s script isn’t even finished but the ‘toon’s was in the can months ago.
Moreover, it makes sense to have more characters here to springboard into other film projects. Say, if the movie helps the cartoon, then the cartoon could help Black Panther or Wasp make it into “Avengers 2.”
July 28th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Why does Marvel feel the need to include 80′s music in their animation tv shows?
They should really take a note from DC and just have really great theme music when it comes to their animated tv series.
That music is so damn cheesy, and this coming from a lifelong Marvel fan. Their music selection just sucks!!!
July 28th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
The two companies are going after different demographics. Marvel is going after the kids. Their bag is in toys and licensing. DC is catering to the aging fans (with kids as an afterthought). So the DC stuff will most of the time bend a little mature (except for Batman, who they use to cover all demographics).
July 28th, 2010 at 2:35 pm
Pause that vid around 1 minute 35 seconds after T’Challa/The Black Panther is kneeling in front of the costume he has before him. Nick Fury (shooting) is african-american. He just doesn’t look like Sam Jackson. He’s got a full head of hair and white at the temples. Looks like this cartoon mixes both classic Fury and Ultimate Fury together.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
No reason to assume that this show will overlap with the movie at all. Its just there to generate awareness and sell product to the age group below the movie’s audience.
Did the teen IRON MAN cartoon have anything to do with the movie? Did the X-MEN EVOLUTION cartoon that came out after the movie connect to the cast and storyline? Not at all.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
I’m hoping the cartoon leaves room to call in reserve Avengers as needed who may not be on the active roster. It’d be great to see some other classic Avengers that may not have the opportunity to hit the big screen.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:50 pm
This looks in line with the last several Marvel-based cartoons, which doesn’t really excite me. Granted, I’m probably not their target audience, so I suppose that’s fine.
Still, the Hawkeye scenes were more than a little awesome-ish.
July 28th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Black Widow is in that trailer with Hawkeye. Nick Fury is the same as was shown in Iron Man: Armored Adventures and Wolverine & the X-Men, a mix of Ultimate and 616.
I like the look of this. Much better than the 90′s cartoon and a more traditional take than Super Hero Squad. Bring it on.
July 28th, 2010 at 3:22 pm
Isn’t Wasp not in the Avengers movie? I don’t think Hank Pym has been cast yet either. If the final roster for the movie is minus those members; how could you possibly think its connected to the animated series?
Unless Pym/Wasp follow the latest characterization of a dysfunctional relationship and both of them die in the show. “There is no death in a Marvel show, this entertainment for kids.”
And ninjas that invade the streets of New York with a blind “hero” leading them by killing en masse is considered cool too kids!
July 28th, 2010 at 3:58 pm
The first cartoon, let us remember, featured Wonder-Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Tigra, and Falcon. Maybe they could work out some sort of salute to it on this cartoon. After a year or so, anyway…
Interesting how in the 1970′s and 1980′s, the Vision became the one indespensible Avenger, with the Scarlet Witch not far behind. They seem to have been dropped–did this begin with the “Avengers Dissassembled” storyline? Anyway, in terms of movie rights, I think Wanda was treated (and sold) as an X-Men character. Presumably Vision is still available, but his back-story is too complicated and the visual translation to live action too difficult. And they’ve already got one green guy.
I expect to see the Falcon used at some point, maybe if the Cap or Avengers films have sequels. Tigra, not so much.
July 28th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
I have to say, I liked Wolverine and the X-Men as a stepping stone between Marvel’s 90′s animation style and something more modern, but this…uhg.
This looks like a serious step backward. It looks rushed and immature.
Contrasting this with DC’s new Young Justice cartoon doesn’t help either. I know they’re relatively new to this, but Marvel just looks years behind in animation.
July 28th, 2010 at 4:43 pm
Don’t like the obvious emphasis on Iron Man, parts of it remind me of the Justice League (in a good way) parts of it are kinda weird (the various sizes of Thor and his cape for one) and the music and dialogue are just nasty.
July 28th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
Whatever happened to the Black Panther toon that BET was supposed to be airing?
July 28th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
“Whatever happened to the Black Panther toon that BET was supposed to be airing?”
Guess something fell through with BET because Marvel released it as a motion comic to buy through iTunes, Xbox and such. It’ll be on DVD toward the end of the year.
July 28th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Just to clarify an incorrect statement about Nick Fury in the Newsarama writeup… He IS black in this cartoon, but wearing the classic costume.
July 28th, 2010 at 7:31 pm
Good Lord that music was bad.
July 28th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Am I the only one that noticed Vegeta from DBZ taking down a building?
Some of the voice acting was definitely reminiscent of 80s stereotyped voice acting. So much so that when the power ballad hit, I burst out laughing.
July 28th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
It reminds me of the music for the current Ironman cartoon. I wonder if testing really tells them thats what works best?

“Am I the only one that noticed Vegeta from DBZ taking down a building?”
lol – Graviton does have a DBZ flavor… I must be the only one who thinks this looks pretty good (I grew up throough the 70′s/80′s so I have a natural inclination to the music). the hawkeye sequence was kick-ass! The only thing I don’t like it the way Iron Man’s head looks. But hey – watch Simpsons season 1 and compare it to season 3… artists grow in any show. this will get better looking (even the old Fox X-Men changed and improved it’s animation style through the run)
I’m a little surprised there isn’t a more dramatic jump in quality though from previous marvel stuff now that they have access to Disney resources and experience.
July 28th, 2010 at 9:18 pm
This looks seriously cliched and derivative. Needless to say, I won’t be waiting for this with baited breath. The cheesy dialogue, lazy character designs and dated music certainly does not do this show any favors…
July 28th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
I’m pretty much sold on this.
July 28th, 2010 at 11:54 pm
I’ll be checking it out, looks cool. It’s a long ways away, so I’m not too worried about the music or anything like that (though it does sound kinda cheesy, plenty of time to change that).
We nerds are lucky nowadays. Between this, the Marvel Anime stuff on G4, Green Lantern, and DC’s Animated movies, we have a lot to look forward to!
July 29th, 2010 at 12:06 am
This is the animation Marvel is saddled with after joining with Disney? One of the premier animation studios in the North America? DC, you have nothing to worry about. Young Justice looks to blow this out of the water.
July 29th, 2010 at 12:17 am
Before the Blade movies (if I’m remembering correctly) Wesley Snipes was talking about playing the Black Panther, but of course went on to play everybody’s favorite ass-kicking daywalker… and is now getting hauled-off to jail for messing with Uncle Sam’s money.
A Black Panther movie is long overdue, there are tons of actors that can play him (and please, not Will Smith, L.L. Cool J, or some flavor-of-the-minute rapper), and I’m sure not too difficult to pull off.
July 29th, 2010 at 6:06 am
While the animation in the trailer and final product doesn’t look as good as the animation in the first trailer for this series (here’s a link to the first trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_G7_s8Bi9o&feature=related ), I still think that this looks pretty good.
I’m old school, so I like the theme song. And those of you wsho are complaining about the theme song and comparing this series to DC cartoons, you need to remember that the very popular and high ratings grabbing TEEN TITANS cartoon also had a theme song. I should also point out that most anime TV series have theme songs.
Despite what many of you might believe, ALL of the DC animated TV series are aimed at kids, not adults.
The reason why Black Panther is part of this lineup is so that the team will be more racially diverse (which is a good thing IMO).
The Nick Fury in this series is an amalgamation of the original classic Fury and the (IMO) crappy Ultimate Fury.
July 29th, 2010 at 8:40 am
If this toon is anywhere close to as good as the recent Spiderman (maybe the best marvel toon ever) or X-Men toon, it should be ok. I’m a fan of the iron man show, too, so I have hopes for this. I’m just glad the Cap isn’t Bucky.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:38 am
I feel bad for kids trying to get into the mainstream superhero comics today. I really enjoyed that the old Marvel Superheros and Spiderman (60′s) although not great animation, told the classic stories nearly to the letter and were in continuity with the issues that I was buying at the newstand/drugstore. I know that things have changed and storylines had to be revamped (all THOSE heroes would now be in their 70′s LOL) but it really gave me an appreciation for the history of the comics.
July 29th, 2010 at 10:51 am
akachris,
The coment cracks me up (I’m not making fun of you I genuinely thought it was funnY) however I wanted to know which character you thought looked like Braniac?
July 29th, 2010 at 11:43 am
akachris,
I said the exact same thing. The tentacled thing writhing at 2:18 in the trailer, is the Brainiac reference.
As for all you people complaining about the music, I have nothing against theme songs in animations, but I’m going to throw-in with the haters on this one. You’re right. It stinks. It doesn’t have to win a Grammy, but it can be way better.
July 29th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
jloder24 makes an excellent point. Spectacular Spider-Man looked liked “kiddie” animation with a “cheesy theme song” and it was the best Spider-Man cartoon ever produced.
July 29th, 2010 at 2:18 pm
marvel has proven when it comes to animated they figure cheese sells thus the music as if black panther showing up in the cartoon leading to his own movie finaly. one can only wait and see espicaly since the black panther was suppose to have his own cartoon.
July 29th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
Someone mentioned that this is clearly aimed at kids…. With a parent company like Disney, it’s no wonder.
After watching the trailer for DC OnLine (yes, I know its a game and not a toon), this was an utter waste of my time.
Message to Marvel: stick to the movies, and leave the animation arena to your competitor. :-\
July 29th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
That looks like the Avengers toon I’ve always wanted to see.
July 30th, 2010 at 1:09 am
@SAMURAI36:
Tbh Marvel isn’t that great at making movies either! For every SpiderMan, there is a Daredevil. For every X-Men installment, there is a crappy FF flick!
July 30th, 2010 at 10:40 am
Thank you for sharing this. I’m always looking for smart information to share with clients and my colleagues, and this post is definitely worth sharing!
July 30th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Was that Rick Jones talking to the Hulk? We have Jim Rhodes, Pepper Potss, and Maria Hill shown. Also the cabbie’s newspaper mentioned the Punisher and Man-Thing.
August 15th, 2010 at 3:13 pm
While Marvel can’t match with the awesome drawing style of DC’s animations (just check the Justice League Unlimited, Batman, Green Lantern: first flight or Wonderman) DC just can’t match with the Marvel movies: Spiderman, Hulk, Daredevil and more. I dont really like this cast without enough sexy girls Scarlet Witch, Tigra, Mocking Bird, She-hulk, Spiderwoman, Photon, Sersi or Miss Marvel who are also preeminent members of the Avengers. Where are Hercules, Wonderman, The Vision, Quicksand? By the way the suit of Wasp is so ugly! she looks like this little girls animation Winx i think! May be their plan to do like DC: Justice League then Justice League Unlimited with more migthy and interesting Avengers…DC won Emmy hope Marvel will do the same who knows…
August 15th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
oh my God i wrote Quicksand instead of Quicksilver! LOL
