The first “official” day of Comic-Con International: San Diego is starting as we type, but before diving into that chasm of comic book announcements and movie hype, let’s take a look back at all there was to be seen Wednesday night at preview night — like Odin’s massive throne at the Marvel booth.
More pics after the jump!
- Sure, this line to get in looked rather daunting, but moved surprisingly (and refreshingly!) quickly.
- Stepping inside Comic-Con is probably the sweetest feeling of the year.
- Everyone talks about how Hollywood has taken over Comic-Con, but just about every publisher you can think of is still here, like Drawn & Quarterly.
- And Top Shelf, with James Kochalka and Jeffrey Brown among others hanging out, drawing sketches and signing books.
- With the movie out next year, there’s lots of Green Lantern stuff around this year — like this at the Mattel booth.
- The DC booth, always popular.
- Superman vs. He-Man! Who didn’t have that comic as a kid? (Well, probably lots of people, but you missed out.)
- Of course, these comics came out before Star Comics (published by Marvel) had the Masters of the Universe license. But you already knew that.
- Comic-Con is always good at making you feel inadequate over how you display your toys.
- Truly something for everyone at Comic-Con this year.
- Ecto-1!
- Oni booth was swamped all night, and this week’s release of the final Scott Pilgrim volume and next month’s movie probably had a little something to do with it.
- Lots of big celebrites at Comic-Con as always, like beloved Autobot Bumblebee!
- And the Undertaker!
- A few awesome teasers this year at the Hasbro booth, like this one…
- …and this one. Was really hard to get a picture of this without someone posing in front of it in the classic “attempting to lift Mjolnir” pose.
- And lots of people were trying to high-five this Iron Man. It says “do not touch,” folks!
- Life-sized (?) My Little Pony. Not so little!
- These were given out at the Hasbro booth and a huge hit. Who wouldn’t want to emulate the destroyer of worlds?
- Capcom booth was previewing Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and yep, it looks awesome.
- I understand that this is a local tie-in to San Diego, but that seems like an awful lot of 11-year-old Dan Fouts Starting Lineup figures for one booth.
- Even though preview night is only three hours, some people can’t resist grabbing some sweet, sweet convention center onion rings.
- Abin Sur’s corpse (from next summer’s Green Lantern film) was on display at the Warner Bros. booth. Morbidly fantastic!
- If this looks bad, it’s pretty light compared to how it gets on Friday and Saturday.
- Comic-Con wouldn’t be complete without Ugly Dolls roaming the crowd. EDIT: These are not Ugly Dolls! They are Hoops and Yoyo of Hallmark card fame.
- Iron Maiden Heroclix. Comic-Con really has it all.
- Like Iron Man made out of Mega Bloks, for instance.
- And Master Chief!
- Dark Horse booth has a lot going on each year.
- Image’s booth, proudly showing off the upcoming AMC series based on The Walking Dead.
