  1. joe bloke Says:

    oh, dear.

  2. Chris Chiang Says:

Is it me or does he look more like Power Ring from the Crime Syndicate?

  3. Parkaboy Says:

Um… I kind of dig the mask, but I’ll have to see the costume in action before passing judgment. Can’t tell much from that pic.

  4. Aaron Thall Says:

    …No.

    Just… No.

He looks more like a VILLAIN than the HERO.

Does anybody have a link to an image that says “Costume Fail”?

  5. jloder24 Says:

Love it. Is there a full body pic in the story you can scan and post?

  6. George M. Says:

I really try not to judge a whole movie by one half view promo shot of the main character, but as far as the costume goes, at least from this picture, I kinda hate it. It’s really boring.

  7. Matt Says:

    Looks pretty sweet to me!

  8. NeoSamurai Says:

I might like it if I could see the black of the costume. I’m also curious as to why they didn’t try to do the layered lantern symbol like it is in the current comics.

  9. Yipe Striper Says:

this is an uncorrected look… it will sizzle on the screen. awesome!

  10. Andoc Says:

I don’t hate it, but need to see a full body pic or the suit in motion before really judging it. That said, where’s the white on the costume?

  11. Scott Says:

Not bad. The mask looks a little odd (and alot like Power Ring’s), but overall, not bad

  12. Terry Says:

Why does this remind me of The Riddler?

  13. CapCanuk Says:

I bet the costume is going to come out of the ring a la Flash or something…I think they were going for something more ‘spacey’ and alien-like. While I do think he looks more like a bad guy, I will reserve judgement until I see how it looks in the actual film.

  14. Seth Says:

Typical fanboy losers…let’s judge the whole movie by one still photo. Let’s not wait until at least a trailer comes out or perhaps another picture or two. No, lets condemn it right now. Pathetic!! BTW, the costume looks ok but I’ll wait until I say more.

  15. Clint Kent Says:

The mask looks wrong, the shape for sure. It’s not that hard to do the mask from the comic which would look good. The veins on the costume look stupic. And if I’m not mistaken, the whole costume is green, no Black, no white gloves. From the pick it’s one whole green costume. FAIL.

  16. JayMeDee Says:

I dunno…Looks not bad so far. Finally see some “white” eyes (well…transparent at least). Uniform looks like it’s pulsing with light…Looking forward to seeing a full body shot/in motion

  17. Draz Says:

It’s OK. But the monocolored Green look just isn’t working. I like the energy lines and all that tho.

Needs some of the black, and maybe White, tho I could see how the white might not look good on screen.

  18. Mark Says:

That looks sweet. I can picture it in movement, fluctuating. Very very cool!

  19. Michael Says:

WOW that look just like it does in the comics I love it it just like the comics suit now I know some people will hate it but Us comic book fans love it

  20. Lee Says:

I’m not really sure whats going on with the costume. it almost looks like Kyle’s ION costume? I’m gonna hold judgment until I see a trailer, but for now it looks OK, just a bit too much CGI for my taste

  21. Rok-L Says:

Looks nice, but where are the white gloves? The cool thing with super-hero costumes like Spider-Man and Green Lantern’s is that you really don’t need to make any sort of drastic changes to them.

Still looking forward to this. Can’t wait.

  22. Lan Pitts Says:

I like how it feels organic and actually made of light.

  23. Josh Says:

The mask could be touched up but I think it’s pretty damn good.

  24. David Fullam Says:

    Sucky. Just like DC Comics.

  25. Brad Says:

i love it!! looks to me like they’re trying to show the costume’s made of the ring’s green energy which is very cool.

  26. Cyber2099 Says:

Stop whining whoever don’t like it…..

Me thinks it rocks and the movie probably going to make alots

    money…………….

……….as long as it doesn’t take any of the formula of the mess that was Jonah Hex….

  27. Roland Says:

Awesome and do geeks have any more original a word than “FAIL”. Christ guyz get some imagination. This entire costume is awesome. I couldn’t hope for better and this is a frame from an early production shot and will probably look brighter on the magazine anyhow!

  28. Ken Says:

Not really sure how I feel about it as of now. I’m still not digging the idea of an all-CGI suit, though. We’ll have to see.

  29. Sam Says:

You guys are crazy! He looks GREAT!!

  30. Steve Says:

I am disappointed. It looks like his flesh was ripped off and the costume is made up of his muscles, which have been dyed green. I don’t see any black and I miss the white gloves. I’ll wait for a better reveal, but so far, not so good.

  31. Set Says:

and here we go. Damn the suit looks fine. find something else to pick on the move about. God makes me ashamed to be a fanboy or geek or whatever the hell we are called this week. dont like? dont go see the damn movie. EASY. Give it a chance in the movie b4 u get all bitchy.

  32. Steve Says:

    Oh, and what NEW BUFFY??

  33. Ken Says:

In all honesty, now that I’ve looked at the cover better, I really don’t care for it. I’ll have to see it in motion.

That being said, I’m more curious to what this “The New Buffy” is all about.

  34. samuel Says:

he looks powerful! WOW i cant wait to see more

  35. Skyhawk Says:

Hmm, it looks photoshopped to me. Maybe when I see some still photos. For now – meh.

  36. Steve Says:

It’s funny how those who don’t like it are “whiners” or are “crazy,” as if our opinion is less than theirs because they like it and we don’t.

  37. John Says:

What’s with all the lines? Where’s the gloves? The black? Why is it just… green. This is Mysterio done right. Green Lantern done wrong. It reminds me of Spider-Man with the lines..

  38. Kel-El Says:

Nice, but he reminds me of Kyle Rayner, for some reason.

  39. khiaao Says:

Thats going to take some getting use too. oh well hope the movie will be good and not a flop.

  40. Ed Says:

Ewww! It looks gross to me!

  41. Simon DelMonte Says:

It looks a bit goofy. And I am not really in love with costumes that are more CGI than actual fabric. (I always imagined the GL suit as being substantial, based on how Hal used it to brave the Arctic in a story waaaay back around 1980.)

But I know better than to judge a costume out of context. And Reynolds does sort of have a Hal Jordan look about him.

The only thing I am not in love with is the mask. It looks painted on.

  42. U_no Says:

It seems with this costume and those seen from sore the fan community is rather divided. We must remember that these films aren’t just for us. They’re a chance to extend the reach of these properties.

I’m not feeling this costume so much right now. Not enough contrast. I mean you can see how the light is supposed to simulate the look of the costume (look hard), but it doesn’t come off so well here. Hopefully it’ll work better on the screen. It’s gonna be hard to get used to all of that green though.

  43. Bobby Says:

I’ll have to wait and see as more images comes out. First glance, it reminds me of something from the horrible Batman & Robin movie years back.

It doesn’t mean the movie will be bad (personally, I think Ryan Reynolds will carry that aspect well enough), it’s just their as-is reveal leaves me a little flat.

  44. Blou Says:

    Where are the nipples?

  45. AJ Ryan Says:

GL has one of the best costume designs in comics.

That picture looks like complete garbage.

Maybe in motion it will look better, but this looks like when people photoshops over naked bodies to make models look like superheroes. Only, for this they didn’t actually try to make it look like GL.

Also, I think it is funny that there have been very few negative comments so far, yet so many comments seem to be people complaining about other people not liking the suit.

  46. Nat McTeagle Says:

I always love it when Internet comics nerds scream that a costume looks “GAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!” and then offer several paragraphs full of fashion advice and alterations.

  47. Trunks Says:

Looks cool to me but I doubt this is the final version for the movie. Looks like they needed some images for advertising and someone photoshopped these close to the what’s in the movie.

    I like the classic logo!

  48. codecrackx15 Says:

I like it!!! It definitely beats the plastic Thor outfits!!!!
    http://codecrackx15.wordpress.com/2010/07/15/new-power-rangers-nope-its-thor/

  49. mr cheeky chops Says:

looks like a rubber yet suit. I’m not impressed. Lets wait and see though. I just hope the deadpool costume is better.

  50. Gonza Says:

    Looks amazing!
    Cannot wait!!

  51. muthasucka Says:

So I just downloaded the hi-res version and zoomed in to see some details… and the mask and neck are totally photshopped on. And not very well done. I am beginning to have doubts about this – could this be an elaborate hoax?

  52. JasonM Says:

    Looks like shit.

  53. Roland Says:

    Now really impressed!

  54. Anal Surprise Says:

As a career graphic artist, I can assure all of you that the mask was Photoshopped on. And badly so.

I can’t imagine them CGI’ing the mask throughout the whole movie. WTF is going on?

  55. Great scott Says:

Really uninspired. It looks like bad digital concept art that has been photoshopped onto his body. Between this and the photo of Anthony Hopkins in the muscle suit for Thor, superhero movies are starting to look like parodies of themselves. Next we’ll have nipple suits again.

  56. Rev. O.J. Flow Says:

    I approve.

  57. absherlock Says:

With the poofy hair, the whited-out eyes and the way the mask frames his forehead, he really reminds me of David Boreanez in vampire-mode.

  58. lebeau Says:

I don’t hate it. But I don’t like it either. I do hate the “veins” or whatever those are supposed to be. I can see why they left off the white gloves. But I would think they’d like the black parts of the costume.

I have confidence the movie will be great and I’ll adjust to the costume. But I don’t care for this picture.

  59. Bzzd Says:

I like it. I wonder if it’s supposed to look painted on because its made of light, the blurred edges kind of bother me and are the reason it looks like a bad photoshop. This is so much better than what is going on with Thor.

  60. Doug Skywalker Says:

At first sight, I was taken aback. I wasn’t quite prepared for the ‘liberties’ they had taken. But then, I took a second to consider a few things:

    1) Martin Campbell has stated they wanted a suit that looked alien and organic, so this definitely fits that criteria (very well I might add)

    2) For all we know this is how Hal FIRST appears in the suit after Abin Sur gives him the ring. He very easily change it mid-movie or something.

    3) This is sci-fi action film based on a sci-fi action comic book. There was going to be some changes made, and this is one I’m happy about. The last thing I wanted was a fake, foam rubber/latex outfit that screamed hoaky superhero film. This at least gives the film credibility as a sci-fi film.

All in all, I’m excited. Green Lantern is my favorite superhero (Kyle Rayner is the one I grew up with, though I also dig Alan Scott, the original Ring Slinger) and I’m betting this will be my favorite superhero film.

  61. codecrackx15 Says:

The entire suit is computer generated in the movie.

Photos from the set not long ago revealed Reynolds wearing only a grey visual effects temp suit during filming, a suit that would be replaced by a costume to be almost entirely computer-generated according to reports.

The final suit in the film looks to have avoided the matte green torso/black extremities body stocking of the comics in favour of a midnight green suit with muscle lines made of pulsing green light.

  62. DonutFactory Says:

Google Slim Goodbody and you’ll see why this suit is a fail…

I get it, Reynolds is ripped. I don’t need a GL suit that’s a musculature.

Anywho, still hoping for a good flick.

  63. Brian Real Says:

Eh, I’ll decide on the suite when I see it in motion. A still image might not work.

However, Ryan Reynolds looks like a perfect Jordan.

  64. Vince Says:

I think making the suit organic and an extension of the wearer is nothing short of inspired. It makes more sense than any use of the costumes in the comics. To me, this is a time where Hollywood has improved on the original. I’m all for this.

  65. Jared Says:

I think it looks good. They have to change it from the comics. does it really make sense that a space cop would wear brightly coloured spandex? Of couse they would plastic it up. alien and scifi or not it still has to have some beleiveability to it. (granted why would an alien law enforcement organization name themselves after a earth-made source of light…)

  66. BigFrakinDeal Says:

I waited forever for a GL movie to be make and this is the suit they decided to use even Kyle Rayner braindead would come up something better then this

  67. Wendell Says:

Interesting. My first, immediate reaction to the look of the suit was “Ugh!” But after viewing it several times, I’ve already warmed up to the modified design. I think it’ll work just fine.

As far as Mr. Reynolds being casted for the lead role (Hal/Green Lantern), from the moment I heard that he was going to play GL, I immediately shouted “YES!” I’ve always thought his acting skills, physique and especially his pronounced jawline would make him the perfect actor for the role. I’m not too keen on the look of the mask though, because it make him look more like Power Ring (or an evil lantern) than the hero we all know, but on a scale of 1-10, so far, I give the overall design a 7. With a full body view of the character, I’m sure I’ll increase it to an 8, dare I say a 9?

    So far, so good.

  68. thertst Says:

actually i think its a pretty good visual extension of the comic costume. They took all the classic elements and left them intact while making the rings power more organic instead of opting for *shudder* tights or some lame body armor! I give 2 thumbs up…esp after seeing the costumes for Thor! ugh. I had flashbacks from the original Clash of the Titans seeing that.

  69. Yowza Says:

    So-so.
I wish it had some black on it.
Also, the ‘ribbed with energy’ effect might be a bit much. OR it might look way cooler once it is in motion and lit up.
    So…like I said…so far it is So-So.

  70. cyberdragon1976 Says:

Ryan Reynolds looks muck better as Hal Jordan than I thought he would.

I’ll hold reservation as to the movie as a whole until I see more.

As to this costume? Admittedly it’s a first look, and not a whole one at that. But for my money? Bad. Very, very bad.

Where it it written that all superhero costumes have to have texture and all kinds of other extraneous garbage when they go to the big screen?

  71. Heyohyeah Says:

    @cyberdragon1976

It’s not a “costume.” It’s a battle suit created by an advanced alien species. Fine for it appear as spandex in the comics, but in a live-action translation? This is one film where the textured look is quite justified.

  72. 2x2 Says:

    He looks like Will Ferrell

  73. Xero Says:

Fu-fu-fugly. Wow what happened here? It looks like design by committee. He’s been Schumachered.

  74. Ravager Says:

    love the costume
    hate the mask

  75. Brandon Says:

ENOUGH! I’ve had it with you overly critical people. The costume looks awesome, especially considering this is Warner Bros. Not to mention movie companies rarely do this good a job when adapting comics books to film; i.e. Thor.

  76. SuperheroTV Says:

Not at all what I was expecting… GL has one of the classic costumes in comics, one so cool you need not tamper with it. Adjustments justified to fit the needs of film I understand, however an all-green sinewy space suit simply isn’t as cool. Still very much looking forward to the movie, though.

  77. Mike Says:

Just two nitpicks – the mask looks like bodypainting and why are all the “lines” heading towards his crotch?

    Despite that, it looks ok

  78. Cæu Says:

Was out looking for a job to support my comics habit (& other stuff, like BILLS) when this news hit, but now I’m back and proud to say …my incentive to have cash in my pocket to pay for this stuff has been redoubled. …And I’m glad I have a subscription to EW!

  79. Madcat Says:

    So basicly, Hal’s….nude?

I’ll wait till I see it in action before I make judgements.

  80. Shaun Reid Says:

I’ll wait for some better pics before I’ll comment fully as it looks too much like concept art to me.

A clearer high def pic would be great.

  81. scott Says:

Wow…absolutely craptastic!!!!!!Yet again DC has proven they have no idea what their doing!!!!I wasn’t thrilled with Reynolds being cast as Hal,but I was hoping they’d at least get the costume right…Boy was I wrong!!!!!!They should have stuck with the green, black and white original!!!Thanks guys i’ll pass!!!Hey while your at it why not give Superman a black costume to go with that darker take you wanted for the character!?!?!If it’s not broken don’t fix it!!!!!!!!!!…nuff said!

  82. richardknownasdick Says:

Ya know I’m usually a wait and see kinda guy… but this is really bad. Hopefully it’s still a work in progress.

  83. Luvcroft Says:

    Green Power Ranger GO!

  84. Trailsong Says:

For the love of God, it looks like they peeled away the top layer of his flesh and he’s built of a combination of green muscles and Iron Man’s leftover heart pieces. This is -not- good.

  85. Kevin G Says:

wow… that’s not good at all. i love the casting, but that just looks awful. why is he naked? if you look closely at his hands, the green is just “painted” on. you can see his finger nails. this is just really bad. i hope this is an early pre-vis teaser.

i mean… why is his mask photoshopped on? ugh… terrible.

  86. Buddy Deering Says:

One things for sure if someone actually looked like that in reality you’d never figure out who it is. The mask makes it harder.

  87. Michael Says:

These is why I hate comic book movie because people call their suit power ranger these is why I hate comic book movie

  88. ION Says:

Imangine the original power of this ring

  89. lieutenant_non Says:

    CRAP ON A CRUST

  90. batfan86 Says:

It looks fine so far. No final judgement can be made from a single photo.

  91. Michael M Says:

I am not sure on this? It looks a little like the illustration of the human muscles, kinda creepy. It is hard enough getting paste Ryan Reynolds.

  92. SouthtownKid Says:

Grotesque. Looks like they flayed the skin from his body and painted his now-exposed musculature green. It’s revolting. Nauseating, even.

I’m not crazy about the bow-tie shaped mask, but whatever. That’s the kind of arbitrary, needless change I expect from movies, and I can live with it. But the suit is disgusting.

  93. ghost fiction Says:

Looks like Will Ferrell as the Green Lantern

  94. Cæu Says:

…And in other news… Leo and Anna are still dreamy.

  95. Greg E Says:

i think it is fine. i just question the logic of tossing aside any gil kane design for no apparent reason.

  96. Boomshadow... Mike Boomshadow Says:

He reminds me of Slim Goodbody from the old Captain Kangaroo show, but green, and with just visible muscles instead of visible organs. Seriously, he looks like someone put the Hulk on a starvation diet and then skinned him.

When will DC and WB realize that radical changes to superhero costumes hardly ever work? There was absolutely nothing wrong with the current Hal Jordan comics costume.

  97. Unit99 Says:

I like it, I still want to view the trailer before I judge the entire film.

  98. Jabe Says:

This looks like the fan art that flooded the internet when Ryan Reynolds was first announced in the role. In fact, I think some of the fan art looked better. With a CG costume the only limit is the designer’s imagination, which appears to be very limited. I was expecting much more than a green doctor manhattan with glowy veins and airbrushed abs.

  99. Shaun Says:

A couple of people have said he looks like Will Farrell… No, he doesn’t. He does, however, look exactly like BEN STILLER. That’s going to be hard to take seriously.

I guess it’s not terrible, but it’s not good either. I think back to Chris Reeves in a very straight-forward, classic looking Superman costume and I have to wonder why the studios today can’t just go with a look like that anymore. Even the Spidey costume in the recent movies was pretty much spot-on, with a little modern flourish perhaps but still looking like the character we know and love. But GL? It looks like he’s naked and wearing a body suit, or else has his costume, um, painted on?

The lines on the costume are weird… I dunno, some of the black and white from the classic Hal costume would’ve been welcome here. I think it would look more like an actual costume and less like glowing body paint then. The mask and poofy hair are offputting too. It looks more Kyle than it does Hal.

Mostly though, he justlooks like Ben Stiller in body paint. And that’s just wrong. I hope this gets reworked between now and the release.

  100. Ortiz Says:

Gonna wait for the trailer to say something, at the moment, not very impressed.

    Peace.

  101. The Zug Says:

Well I’m counting on Martin Campbell to deliver a quality product. So I’m willing to wait and see. It’s an interesting contrast to the Thor costumes, which just came out cartoony. I could see this one going either way.

I do wonder about the mask, though. I can only assume they looked at a bunch of different shapes, but I wonder why the classic quasi-domino look didn’t work. Too costumey?

Can someone photoshop a more classic version of the mask on to see what it would look like?

  102. Kel-El Says:

I love trigger responses from fanboys, most of whom don’t have jobs in the industry.
It’s been mentioned that the pic is one of Jordan in the middle of transformation. There’s no reason that this couldn’t be the standard GL uniform, and it’s up to the wearer to adjust it to his taste. Y’know, like in the comics.

  103. tibbslim Says:

Have you ever seen those anatomy books that show the muscles of the body in red/maroon colors? This is what I think the suit looks like, except it is green

  104. Boomshadow... Mike Boomshadow Says:

    For Aaron Thall:

  105. Bonzo Says:

Yeah… pretty bad lookin for a sneak peek. we’ll see how it shakes out.

  106. Boomshadow... Mike Boomshadow Says:

For Aaron Thall (this time with a working link, I hope):

It doesn’t actually say “Costume Fail,” but…well,

I think it might have been an early prototype for “Steel.”

  107. Ken Hart Says:

I think my issue is more with the picture itself than the costume. It just looks so photoshopped on th the cover. I would imagine the actual CGI costume would look a bit different. Fingers crossed for the white gloves.

  108. cray_ws Says:

I don’t understand why they don’t just make it a movie, as opposed to some hokey clownfest like this. Not every comic book needs to be reinterpreted for live-action. They could’ve easily just gave him a military inspired space suit or just plain clothes, the ring is the only important factor.

You know, if this movie was animated (CGI), I don’t think we’d be complaining. They could’ve styled it exactly like the book.

I guarantee you Green Lantern and Thor films are going age very poorly.

  109. Zenstrive Says:

Definitely need the white gloves and the black portions

  110. Jakk Says:

Oh HELL no. Ryan is a great choice for Hal, but that costume looks AWFUL. Why do Hollywood “Costume Designers” feel the NEED to ruin iconic costumes?

Sigh..If you are going to make a movie with the fan base of comic buyers, then at least TRY to keep it LIKE the comics.

Hopefully, the story(and movie) will make you forget the costume.

  111. Peter Says:

Oddly enough, my biggest complaint is his hair. It just seems……off somehow.

  112. Gaz Says:

It’s not bad, would be nice if they would have stuck to the original a bit more, but what’s a Hollywood comic movie without it’s “improvements”.

  113. codecrackx15 Says:

New pic from Thor and the outfits are looking better than the pic that was released here…still no helmets…
    http://codecrackx15.wordpress.com/2010/07/16/lighting-does-wonders-for-the-thor-outfits/

I’m still like the Green Lantern costume better though…

  114. Jay Says:

Not liking this at all. Why is there a constant need to redeign costumes? Make the movie suit look like the comic and be done with it.

  115. Jay Says:

Or did they get a good discount on desert suits from “Dune”?

  116. codecrackx15 Says:

More new images from the Green Lantern movie.
    http://codecrackx15.wordpress.com/2010/07/16/green-lantern-new-images/

  117. Gonzalo Says:

    Chris Chiang is right….. HaHa.

  118. adamzeliff1 Says:

My question is this the only Batman movie costume ever complained abouut was George Cloony’s in Batman an Robin because of nipples….If you go back and see Val Kilmer’s It had nipples. Years later Superman Returns the suit alot of major changes from material of the cape during filming, To color schemes making the red too dark and the blue too bold, The cape at the collar, the smaller Superman shield, no sheiled on the cape the short boots, the belt. Now Green Lanturn…No one is a hundred percent satisified whith everything as people know. So like Superman Returns can wait to see if the movie will be crap and not just bash it because of a costume change…It may surprise you

  119. Ken Mackow Says:

It works! I have seen some of the daily rushes. It’s gonna look awesome in HD when completed. Remember, this is not a drawn comic book. Back when Superman was a serial the producers were afraid because the costume had wrinkles and the comic book drawing didn’t. They figured the fans would like it…..THEY LOVED IT…and Superman was even a cartoon when he flew. So let the movie maker make the movie. All you have to do is stuff the theater box office with money! The comic to movie reincarnations are getting better all the time. Wait till you see this CGI costume. It will knock you eyelids wide open!

  120. jesse p. Says:

is that Ben Stiller wearing that costume?…lol…but can’t for the film to come out.

  121. Check it now! How to build muscles Says:
