That’s not bad at all. Anthony Hopkins looks fantastic.
July 14th, 2010 at 8:42 am
I am a little nervous we haven’t seen Thor with his helmet though – that kind of “makes” the look for me. Hope they at least pull it out for battle…
July 14th, 2010 at 9:18 am
There is a significant lack of helmets in this photo. All three characters have very distinctive, iconic helmets and to leave them out for fear of “looking silly” is a shame.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:27 am
I’m not too worried about the lack of helmets in this shot… it looks like a peaceful shot, and I have a feeling the helmets are probably going to be used more as battle-wear.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:29 am
Two things.
1) I hate that both this and Cap are going to be in 3D. Seeing as Thor wasn’t mentioned as being shot in 3D from the jump, I expect it to be horribly implemented. Additionally, I just hate how Hollywood thinks everything needs to be in 3D now.
2) I’m amazed that they didn’t try to give the characters a more traditionally Nordic look. They look rather futuristic. I guess that look fits in more with Kirby’s design sensibilities though, where a lot of the designs he’s more renowned for tend to have a more alien look about them.
Oh, and I agree that we need to see at least these three with their helmets. I could understand the characters not wearing them in every scene, but I’d be happy to if it was at least in battle.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:29 am
As a rule I generally hate any comments left on any website for anything. They are always over critical, and annoying, always. Sadly though this time I am going to be that negative guy. Artiepants while I admire your positivity, I must disagree, with all of my heart and soul.
Looking at these robo asgardian future suits fills me with the most vile of emotions. Odin looks silly; dopey grin, shiny eye patch. Gentleman, ladies Odin is not silly. He is a god! He is an iron fisted deity, he is dark and grim and terrible. He demands human sacrifices and blood. He hung himself for seven days, touring the land of the dead for knowledge. He sacrificed his own eye for the powers of the runes.
I get that super hero marvel Odin, Thor and Loki aren’t really from the same doomed pantheon who await the grim certain future of Ragnarok with determination and clenched jaws, but they shouldn’t look like this. Like shiny mid ninties tv-show crime fighters. I weep friends, I weep for a generation.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:30 am
Looks pretty cool. I’m somewhat excited and I don’t even read or care about Thor. I agree that it would be a shame to not have the helmets in the movie.
Though as I’ve said I don’t really read Thor, even I know how to recognize the characters by their helmets.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:32 am
ahh fanboys…
…please continue to live up to the stereotype and provide endless hours of mirth.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:34 am
I don’t read Thor comics, and am not a fan of the character in general, so take this with as many grains of salt as you see fit.
I think that looks awful.
Just my two cents, but seems like they could have had him in ragged robes and let Hopkins’ acting portray his power in a subtle and understated way.
On the other hand you have this big, plastic armor look. With the feathery hair and the gaudy eye patch, it all just really puts me off.
Maybe in the film there will be some kind of texture work done to make the armor look like it has some wear to it or something. Now it just looks silly and fake.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:37 am
Yeah, i doubt any general movie-goer will thnk this looks good.
I’m a comic reader and i still think it looks silly.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:38 am
Is it me or are the Ultimates inspiring that costume a little. I love the Ultimates dont get me wrong, but this building up towards the Avengers not the Ultimates.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:39 am
Not seen a superhero costume this bad since the Batman nipple suit.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:46 am
With all of the awesome, medieval/nordic looking designs from the comics, they chose to go woth some stupid, plastic, futuristic design for the characters? This movie is going to suck.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:51 am
not bad but where’s Thor’s helmet?? and that gold eye patch looks a bit silly on Odin.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:52 am
Do we know who’s playing Donald Blake? It wouldn’t be the same actor would it?
July 14th, 2010 at 9:56 am
Dammit, nerds! Look at how Kirby it is! There’s more Kirby in one frame than in three hours of FF movie and sequel.
Making everything look like Lord of the Rings would’ve been one way to go . . . but this is better. These are extradimensional aliens who believe themselves to be Viking gods. This is Silver Age Kirbified comic book mythology!
July 14th, 2010 at 9:57 am
Something’s very wrong about this. Costume design, cinematography, lighting. Looks less like Asgard and more like corporate boardroom with fluorescent lighting.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:58 am
It doesn’t look plastic to me. I think it looks really good. I honestly can’t wait for this movie. I trust Kenneth Branagh’s direction implicitly.
July 14th, 2010 at 10:00 am
Hmmm…I thought they would go for a more lord of the rings type look for the costume. however it does seem more kirby-design like with the futuristic stylings. it may work for comic fans but im wondering if it’ll work for the more casual viewers or for those who might mistake it for the actaul norse-mythology Thor rather than the Marvel superhero Thor. I’ll wait for the trailer to see how it works for the movie. still images hardly ever do the costume justice IMHO.
July 14th, 2010 at 10:05 am
WoW can’t wait to see this movie
July 14th, 2010 at 10:25 am
I don’t give a shit if Kirby or whatever. I like Branagh and all but wow those costumes look bad. I hope they look better in motion than in stills. It looks like hard-plastic like Batman Forever/And Robin.
July 14th, 2010 at 10:33 am
LOL…this gonna be hokey.
July 14th, 2010 at 10:37 am
Gotta’ say I’m not diggin’ it. It might look better in motion though. I’m kind of scratching my head at who approved this pic and what they were thinking. It seems like better lighting would have made a lot of difference in the impact of this image.
That said, the golden eye patch looks ridiculous to me.
July 14th, 2010 at 10:44 am
the chest plate design on Odin is straight out of Kirby’s Eternal armor design.
July 14th, 2010 at 10:55 am
Now, I get that they aren’t the Norse gods, but it is implicit that they are a direct reference to them. Thor, Odin, Loki: These are not random characters that are simply inspired by mythology, they are the mythological characters transcribed and shaped into a comic book world. The book and the characters were born of the romance behind the real-life mythology, which provides an attractive setting and frame of reference, and these costumes are a step very far away from that rich archetype. In particular, the detailing, or lack thereof, removes all sense of antiquity or mythology – leaving us with an Iron Man approach to Odin, most aggregiously.
While these costumes may reflect Kirby’s style, they comletely ignore the overwhelmingly awesome source material of Norse mythology (and the entire Thor series, which consistently borrows from mythology for characters, stories, and design). Kirby’s characters, it turns out, would look like total assholes in real life, and I personally feel that these costumes could have been more artistically ambitious and included a better blend of source materials.
Additionally, aesthetically, that eye patch looks ridiculous. Scar up his face and whiten out his eye or at least give him a patch that is the same color palette as the rest of the costume.
Lastly, would it kill somebody to attempt to put chainmail under that armor instead of pleather? This feels like an uncreative attempt at blending source materials, and is instead an X-Men does Thor
July 14th, 2010 at 10:58 am
Ummmm….I ain’t feelin’ it.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:01 am
“I ate Surtur’s liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti!”
July 14th, 2010 at 11:02 am
Gee, it looks swell!!
July 14th, 2010 at 11:08 am
What takes away from the realism in live action super hero movies is that the clothes don’t look like they were ever worn before the moment of filming.
They need wrinkles. Decoloration. Scratches. Especially when you’re showing armor or armor pieces.
Everyone involved with these productions is usually so ecstatic at seeing live-action versions of the costumes, and they want them in such pristine condition, that it makes it even harder to dive into the movie universe.
It’s a stupid little detail – like thunder and lightning hitting viewers at exactly the same time, which is physically unrealistic – but it’s one I’ve noticed in a lot of super hero movies.
The costumes look even more fake when they look like they just came from the costume shop and were never worn prior to that single moment of shooting.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:11 am
this looks epic!
July 14th, 2010 at 11:15 am
Only fanboys who worry about Superman dialing it up to 11 could like these disastrous costumes. Looks like another Marvel flop is brewing.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:17 am
That patch has to go. It looks ridiculous. Show the dead eye instead. Make him look more gritty. They need to look a little more “unwashed”
July 14th, 2010 at 11:33 am
i think the final film with it’s lighting and effects will look a bit different. that picture of hemsworth a couple months back looked less glittery.
publicity photos of people in super hero outfits often look silly.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:35 am
i have to agree with most of the criticism here, these costumes really feel wrong to me. they look cheap somehow, and i can’t help but think of the comically aweful ‘batman and robin’ movie. as others have already stated, they look way too shiny. and yea, i have to repeat what everyone else has been saying…the shiny gold eye patch looks BAD. odin looks kinda goofy. maybe these will somehow look better in the trailer?
July 14th, 2010 at 11:44 am
I’m thinking that guy looks way too small physically to be playing Thor. The blond guy from True Blood should have gotten the role; he looks like a big huge Norse god.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:52 am
gee, jloder24 is right, Helmstead does look tiny! See, his head’s clearly smaller than Anthony Hopkins’ mouth (if you live in a 2-dimensional world and can’t grasp that Helmstead’s standing a few paces behind Hopkins)!!!
July 14th, 2010 at 11:56 am
Oh, you guys are hurting me … go crack open your Marvel Essentials, come back here, and re-read King Nerd’s comment above. He gets it.
I thought the crowd that hung out on Newsarama was a cut above the linguistically challenged, born-yesterday mass that comments on sites like Superherohype.
I for one applaud the filmmakers for referencing the Kirby-verse rather than Lord of the Rings.
One complaint I agree with: bring on some awesome helmets.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:58 am
To all of the people complaining that the costumes don’t look like lord of the rings cast offs and that they should be dressed in rags and chainmail I have one thing to say. THESE ARE GODS! Why would gods dress in rags or wear human armor?
Think of it like this. All of the mythological depictions of gods in the past were human interpretations of what these gods looked like. So when primitive people would depict them they would cast them in their own image. They would dress them to look like themselves. But why would a city full of gods in 2010 still dress like humans in the dark ages. That makes absolutely no sense. Asgardian gods should look alien and Kirbyesque.
I agree that the lighting is too bright and the armor itself looks a little plasticy but the designs to me are pretty good. Hopefully these are just production shots and not actual still from the finished film.
July 14th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
GO GO ASGARD RANGERS!
July 14th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Wow that’s…. that’s just… that’s absolutely terrible.
July 14th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
This picture reminds me of Marlon Brando on Krypton from the old Superman movie. I’m becoming less impressed the more I see.

July 14th, 2010 at 1:19 pm
Man i needed spell check. badly
July 14th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
I agree with the helmets for wear during battle. HOPKINS looks majestic, i want Thor’s hammer to be bigger he’s a god when he holds that hammer it needs to be god sized not a hasbro toy! if hammer apears bigger in the movie or future teaser images then great! PLEASE ADD HELMETS
July 14th, 2010 at 1:30 pm
Helmets again. Jeez.
July 14th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
wow i had my doubts at first when saw Thor’s armor but man i really liked that pic of everyone together. it has me excited I never really read thor except JMS work here and there so this is exciting for me and while no a deal breaker for me i would love to see thor’s helmet
July 14th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
ugh my keyboard is responding slow its NOT a deal breaker i would like to see thor’s helmet.
aslo wouldnt be shocked if its in 3d
July 14th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
this feels soo much like an adi granov drawing
July 14th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
Not a fan of Thor and this definitely doesn’t look promising.
July 14th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
This Odin has sharigan!!!
July 14th, 2010 at 4:24 pm
I think it looks fine for a publicity still. You really can’t make too much of a judgement yet. Saying this film is gonna be really good or really bad is just silly at this point. At this point all we can say is, yup there’s definitely gonna be a film. When they release a trailer which I’m sure will be soon then a better assessment can be made.
July 14th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
I think Loki’s armour looks great, same with Thor’s, Odin’s is a bit over the top but he’s the king of the gods so it makes sense. My only problem is the eye patch it would look better if it matched the gold in his armour so it didn’t stick out so much.
July 14th, 2010 at 6:03 pm
Not a Thor reader, but this looks really cheesy. I want to believe in Branagh, and I want this to be a movie I enjoy, but I think this one’s got a seriously uphill battle to fight.
Having now learned that Marvel plans to convert both Thor and Captain America to 3D after the fact, I think they’re just making one bad decision after another. Sure, I can go see those movies in 2D (and I will) but it just seems like Marvel’s doing plenty to make people question their decisions: A subpar sequel to Iron Man, some bad casting choices (Chris Evans as Cap especially), recasting roles that didn’t need it, and now making their movies 3D after the fact, which just doesn’t work.
I hope these movies turn out good, but I’m not as enthused as was after the first Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.
July 14th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
Wow! That looks Jonah Hex bad, I’m talking Captain America tv movie bad, I’m saying it’s Power Pack tv pilot bad. Really? A golden eyepatch for Odin? Yeah great costuming choices there guys.
Somewhere in a rundown Studio City opium den Joel Schumacher is inexplicably smiling.
July 14th, 2010 at 7:42 pm
Bwahahahhehehehehehahahahahahahehehehehahahahahahahahahahhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
You know I said …sniiff …it once and I’ll…hehehe…say it again, some live action movies really are meant to stay unmade or done in CG by someone like blur or something…hhaaha. I just don’t get it. Incredibles showed how it’s done, goofy style or not; beowulf showed us how Thor could be done I just don’t see why they keep trying to ice skate up hill.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
I don’t know, with each image they release the movie costume looks worse.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:25 pm
Maybe it’s look better in motion…
July 14th, 2010 at 10:51 pm
This is supposed to look cool and get me excited for the film? C’mon! Did the costume designers even glance at a comic book, let alone check out some traditional Nordic clothing? Hopefully it works, but seeing this static image is very disappointing.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:16 pm
Lame.
Why on earth can’t THOR have chain mail on his arms.
This looks like more of the same x-men/ ninja turtle latex foam rubber.
This and Cap are gonna kill comic movies… because it looks like PURE CHEESE!
July 15th, 2010 at 12:00 am
Wow. I can’t wait for this to hit the Ice Capades. What? This is actually building to an Avengers movie? What? These are Norse gods? Nah. I’ll go thee it when it ith all thilly and on ithe.
July 15th, 2010 at 12:46 am
Alright, that is every bit of awful. They could have gone Ultimates, they could have gone current Thor title, hell, they could have gone original Kirby costumes. Anything would look better than this crap. How could Odin’s eye patch not even look as good as the Klingon from Star Trek F@$&ing 6.
I predict this will be the one to break the Avengers for the general public. Oh and look, their capes are different colors.
I realize I’m not a kid (26), but I resent the idea that kids like crap. And this is CRAP. And yeah, ripping The Lord of The Rings would have helped this immensely. What a joke.
July 15th, 2010 at 3:42 am
Let’s just wait and see what it looks like on film. Though I would have prefered the current leather tunic and armour from the comic.
July 15th, 2010 at 7:34 am
This might work if it was full-on Flash Gordon 1980 kitsch–so bad it’s good. But I’m sure it will be much tamer than that, and as a result, simply awful.
Here’s where the shared universe concept is hampering rather than hurting. THOR needs its own aesthetic, not the same thing as Iron Man and Captain America.
July 15th, 2010 at 8:52 am
Love this Image. Not too worried about the lack of Helmets…as long as they aren’t CGI. I will be watching this in 2D so I can enjoy the moving without having to walk out of the 3D version and complaining about how horrible the conversion was.
July 15th, 2010 at 9:40 am
And the beat goes on.
July 15th, 2010 at 11:08 am
Cheap plastic suits…. Cancel the Avengers movie and have any reference to it removed from Iron Man to save that franchise from this junk.
http://codecrackx15.wordpress.com/2010/07/15/new-power-rangers-nope-its-thor/
July 15th, 2010 at 6:39 pm
I find your lack of helmets disturbing.
July 15th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
It looks like a massive bucket o’ fail. Is this the new Marvel with Disney in charge? Plastic looking shiny suits?
July 16th, 2010 at 3:46 am
I have only one thing to say. Anyone who says they don’t care about the Kirby inspiration should be dragged out and stoned. Kirby was and still is one of the greatest creators to ever live and his stylized approach has inspired so many artists over the years. Even now, his essence can be felt in other artists’ work.
This is looking great and I am hoping it’s every Thor fan’s Walt Simonson/Jack Kirby wet-dream.
July 16th, 2010 at 5:50 am
New pic from Thor and the outfits are looking better than the pic that was released here…still no helmets…
http://codecrackx15.wordpress.com/2010/07/16/lighting-does-wonders-for-the-thor-outfits/
July 16th, 2010 at 6:28 am
Of all the characters,I am most impressed by the Loki Fellow.
He really has a look of an unfavoured but devious son and brother.
I look forward to watching the movie soon.
July 16th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
This is going to be my last comment on the helmet situation…but from what I hear they are getting rid of the ID too. Also you look at the Captain America costume and it looks like what I’ve seen in the Ultimates line. I think that is the look they are going for. They can take parts of both the regular marvel U and the ultimate u and combine them into the movie.
July 16th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
I’ve been reading Marvel Thor for over 30 years and I’m a little concerned about Chris Hemsworth playing Thor. Frankly, he looks too small. Marvel studios should have found someone with a bit more height and muscular appearance. Anthony Hopkins looks great as Odin and so does Hiddelston as Loki. Hopefully, on film and with the special effects, Hemsworth will look impressive.
July 16th, 2010 at 11:53 pm
I actually like the slightly futuristic style. Everyone has their own opinion on this though, let’s not be so arrogant as to tell someone they’re wrong or stupid for liking it or not liking it.
I’m interested to see Thor with the helmet but I can cope without it actually.
If you don’t like the costumes, don’t condemn the movie straight away. A bad costume does not mean a bad movie, plus I find that costumes tend to look a little silly in still images compared to the actual film.
July 18th, 2010 at 1:11 am
LOL were these costumes designed by Joel Schumacher??
January 17th, 2011 at 12:11 pm
i will be waiting for it.
