It’s been, what, three-and-a-half months since Blackest Night #8? If you’re missing the cold, gray touch of the Black Lanterns, well, looks like you don’t have long to wait. DC Comics offered up this teaser image today on their official blog The Source, with no comment other than the subject title: “What is October’s RETURN OF THE BLACK LANTERNS?”
As anyone reading Brightest Day knows, those characters — Hawkman, Firestorm, Martian Manhunter, Deadman, Hawkgirl and Aquaman — might have come back from the dead in Blackest Night #8, but they didn’t come back quite right. Apparently very not quite right, based on that image, though we don’t know exactly what it’s from — a future cover of Brightest Day, or something else? — or anything else at this point. It’s a David Finch cover, so Brightest Day seems like a good bet (and boy, he’s had a newsworthy day, huh?) Still, this sounds like something we’ll hear more about next week in San Diego. But feel free to speculate!

I for one am sick and tired of these black lanterns! It’s over so give it a rest DC!
July 13th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Ditto. I’m sick of dead heroes, altogether. I’m also sick of younger heroes in their mentors’ clothes. Also, heroes changing costumes. Heroes losing their powers is a bore to me, as well. I’m sick and tired of these things even more than I’m sick and tired of vampires.
July 13th, 2010 at 5:40 pm
Awesome!!!!! I rather read more black lanterns from DC than Marvel’s lame vampire stuff.
July 13th, 2010 at 5:40 pm
What he said
July 13th, 2010 at 5:44 pm
Already??? Come on Marvel, bring back Skrulls, it is time.
Peace
July 13th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
DC is epic-lame. Marvel rules
July 13th, 2010 at 5:47 pm
Wow, who didn’t see this coming? Talk about cra$$ repetition and artistic fail.
July 13th, 2010 at 5:49 pm
Coming next: The Return of the Return of Bruce Wayne.
July 13th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
I’m gonna do something CRAZY!!!
I’m going to wait until we hear more details before saying “Marvel RULZ DC DROOLZ”
If done right it will be cool. If not it will suck. If it sucks then my world will end and I’ll probably stop collection because this book broke me!!!
Or maybe I just wont buy a book I don’t like.
July 13th, 2010 at 6:21 pm
I’d like to see those BL characters in a Halloween Special 2010 … just that …
July 13th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Boring.
July 13th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Coming summer 2011: The Final Blackest Night.
July 13th, 2010 at 6:30 pm
Whats successful and sales, will ultimately be shoved down you’re throats until you finally wise up. This is just like Marvel was last decade. And its still going on but not nearly as bad since Heroic Age is just pure crap anyway without the promise of Civil War and the previous events. There’s not nearly as much disappointment since you know what you’re getting before hand.
July 13th, 2010 at 6:35 pm
This is a prelude piece to Blackest Crisis- it will be epic and change the DC universe forever, primarily, because it will feature Deadpool.
July 13th, 2010 at 6:39 pm
coming soon: Blackest Crisis (or Final Night)! Someone has given the Monitors their own Black Rings, and they plan to collapse the multiverse into a single world…a DEAD ONE! Only the Justice League can stop them….but they have to DIE FIRST in order to reach their headquarters in Hell! this December, its Dead Hero versus Dead Villain for the battle of a LIFETIME!!!
13 pages/4.99/1 of 12/DC
July 13th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
Don’t you give them ideas…!
July 13th, 2010 at 7:39 pm
Actually, that last post made me think Didio decided to dust off the Countdown playbook: Blackest Night: ARENA!
July 13th, 2010 at 7:48 pm
It’s amazing how little comic readers really know. Quick to shoot off the mouth and slow to use the brain. The black lanterns have already been shown in refections so it was clear some more cleansing is part of the story. It’s been going well ( far better than I thought it would be ) so far and this is only a cover. The part they play, and what these truly are isn’t known yet. At the end of the series there will be big news but if your a marvel zombie than stay there. If your a DC fan than wait for the end till you start showing your age. It may be what you’ll always wanted.
July 13th, 2010 at 7:49 pm
Coming 2011: Blackest Night – Post Final Crisis
Coming 2012: Blackest Night – Post Post Final Crisis
Coming 2013: Blackest Night – Post Post Post Final Crisis

You pathetic nerds sure love to bitch about anything you know nothing about.
July 13th, 2010 at 8:07 pm
Ditto.
I’m sick of anything new, altogether. I’m also sick of anything else new. Also, change. I’m sick of CHANGE!! I’m sick & tired of not being allowed to own slaves or legally beating women!!
Anger! Hate! Spit! Masturbation!
N-10 is out!
July 13th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
Keeps the internet alive and well.
And whining about others whining is not a step up.
I hope at least a few of these characters (Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman, ect.) get there own new cool series after all is said and done. I really miss the previous Hawk and Dove series. Where are the two Kesels now who worked on that series?
July 13th, 2010 at 8:24 pm
Wolf Blitzer reports on Blackest Crisis: So much crisis, so black…
July 13th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
Halloween Special?
July 13th, 2010 at 8:35 pm
Cause Marvel sure didn’t milk their zombies… oh wait.
July 13th, 2010 at 8:35 pm
“I’m sick of anything new, altogether. I’m also sick of anything else new. Also, change. I’m sick of CHANGE!!”
the point is that it’s not new. or a change. if you’re gonna be sarcastic, at least make sense.
July 13th, 2010 at 8:42 pm
first dc fires millar for wanting to modernize their characters, then they rip off his superhero zombie idea, then they beat that idea into the ground. lame dc. the house of stolen ideas.
July 13th, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Good grief. It is clearly a Blackest Night cover, as author Albert Ching suggests up top. And as BB wisely points out, it’s just a story beat to Brightest Day.
I’ll bet you my entire savings account that, when all is said and done with Brightest Day, most if not all of the returning heroes will be thoroughly cleansed of all Black Lantern residue. They will unite with the Big Five (trinity + GL + Flash) (plus, hopefully, Black Canary and Green Arrow), and the Satellite Era Justice League will be back. Say goodbye to Congorilla and the Titans masquerading as DCU’s premier super-team as JLA gets an A-List post-Brightest Day relaunch with Johns writing (or, maybe, co-writing with Tomasi).
July 13th, 2010 at 9:04 pm
Coming soon form DC…..
Off Whitest Dusk: Revenge of the Return of the Rise of The Black Lantern Corps
July 13th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
I don’t know what’s more sad. So many complaining about something they don’t even have the full 411 on. Or that most of you think your lame jokes are funny.
“Wolf Blitzer reports on Blackest Crisis: So much crisis, so black…”
Was that funny in your head or something?
“Coming summer 2011: The Final Blackest Night”
Were you even trying?
July 13th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
I’m certainly getting sick of knee-jerk fanboy whining. While this appears to be milking a dead cow, let’s see what the final product is before we pass judgment.
July 13th, 2010 at 9:47 pm
whats funny is that everyone making jokes and complaining about it will be the 1st ones in line to buy it when it comes out.
July 13th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
C’mon DC! Black Lanterns again? I mean, Black Lanterns in comics = Deadpool in comi– Whoa! Didja see that picture of the black lanterns? That’s an awesome picture!
July 14th, 2010 at 1:34 am
Brightest Day is the follow-up to Blackest Night. Just look at the cover of #2. Being upset about Black Lanterns showing up in Brightest Day is like being upset that there’s so many dogs in “102 Dalmatians.”
July 14th, 2010 at 2:48 am
At the moment we don’t know anything so let’s hold back eh?
I have loved BN
July 14th, 2010 at 3:37 am
I was afraid something like this was going to happen, when Aquaman’s powers kept being Dark Lantern-ish.
I’m completely done with Blackest Night and the disappointing not-so Brightest Day.
As much as I hate vampires in the Marvel U, I’d still rather read that then zombies in the DC U
July 14th, 2010 at 4:21 am
Ryan said “I’m going to wait until we hear more details before saying “Marvel RULZ DC DROOLZ””
Irvin K said “You pathetic nerds sure love to bitch about anything you know nothing about.”
Richard said ” let’s see what the final product is before we pass judgment.”
Andy Quick said “At the moment we don’t know anything so let’s hold back eh?”
Then what are we supposed to do with a report like this? Should we all just post something along the lines of “well, we’ll have to wait and see how this will turn out because it’s too early to tell. Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
Should we all refrain from posting altogether because we cannot say anything about the comic anyway. Maybe you would like that but I doubt DC or Newsarama would like that.
Why dó you think DC posts a lone cover image for a comic we cannot read for weeks? It’s definitely not to give us good insight into the comic to form our well-balanced opinions. We just have to start talking about the comic: how we hate it, how we love it, how it is a grab for money, how it was built-up in previous issues, et cetera.
July 14th, 2010 at 4:52 am
Don’t read DC then, this is cool news!
July 14th, 2010 at 4:52 am
More AQUAMAN, the better. It’s something in October so I’m guessing its a Halloween tie in issue, no need to get bent all out of shape.
July 14th, 2010 at 5:29 am
If anyone of these complainers had been following Brightest Day, they would know that it has already been leading up to October’s Return of the Black Lanterns. This is no different than when Johns introduced the new Aqualad a month ago and teased he’d play an important role in Issue #10 (which of course is the last issue of September). It is a teaser for Brightest Day/Blackest Night fans. If you’re not a fan, don’t buy the issue and keep your mouth shut!
July 14th, 2010 at 5:43 am
I, for one, am just joshing, not complaining. People need to chill, all around.
July 14th, 2010 at 5:48 am
“I don’t know what’s more sad. So many complaining about something they don’t even have the full 411 on.”
It’s a teaser. You’re SUPPOSED to comment on it. If you don’t like the direction of the comments, go find another board to kiss A$$ on.
“Or that most of you think your lame jokes are funny.”
They were funnier than your whining post. Were you even trying to think?
July 14th, 2010 at 5:48 am
I think everybody is perhaps jumping the gun. Its coming out in October…Maybe its a Halloween special?
If it isn’t, I think its too soon for the Black Lanterns to return. I had hoped in maybe ten years when Blackest Night had “aged” properly…
But I still think that this is a Halloween-type thing.
July 14th, 2010 at 5:58 am
errr, wow you guys are all quick to jump the gun aren’t you? it will most likely be a cover to brightest day, which if any of you have been reading, has suggested that these characters are not right. you guys make me hate admitting i love comics some times. losers.
July 14th, 2010 at 6:32 am
Uh wasn’t final night an actual story from DC? Lol I look thru pretty fast but no one officially said this story changes anything did it? Its a good bet this is from brightest day I don’t know if it was said but is nekron dead or just returned to his dimension? Because if he is just back in his dimension then he might still have a connection to those the white rings revived and they revert back because the Entity and the Nekron are still fighting it out for dominance over these twelve.
July 14th, 2010 at 7:17 am
I imagine that this was already planned sometime before Brightest Day started. Since we don’t know what the upshot of Brightest Day is, as of this moment, and we don’t know what the return of the BLs is, and we don’t know the connection between the two yet, its sort of hard to praise or blast DC for this, at this stage of the game. Clearly there is something wrong with the returned characters and its likely there is something still dead about them. Moreover, since DC (and Marvel) is in the business of entertainment – but trying to make money from it – its not unlikely that DC would try to capitalize on this – especially if the story is good. Why is that a surprise? We don’t even know yet if this is a Geoff Johns project or somebody else’s. On the other hand, I really don’t like vampire stories. Almost as much as I don’t like Superman missing in Action. But that’s another gripe.
July 14th, 2010 at 7:23 am
Wow! That Finch cover looks great! I can’t wait to find out more.
Solicitations say the BN returnees find out WHY they’re back by the time this cover is published so I figure this image ties in somehow. Posters of ennui, ‘hatred’ and so-called predictions of company wide crossovers need to hold off on the knee jerking. Life is too short.
July 14th, 2010 at 7:42 am
Mainstream comic book companies have been beating dead horses since their inception in the late 1930′s early 1940′s. Bitching about it now seems pointless.
July 14th, 2010 at 8:10 am
What if they’re all infected by the Black Lanterns as they each somehow carry a piece of someone who has not yet been resurrected? We know Deadman can merge w/ other people’s bodies and Firestorm needs to have at least two bodies merge to create his hero persona. We know Hawkman and Hawkgirl have carried many lifetimes of memories in their heads over various reincarnations and that their souls are bonded to each other. And both Aquaman and Martian Manhunter use telepathy to project their thoughts elsewhere.
Body, mind, soul… Sounds like these focal characters might be pieces of a resurrection recipe…
Open it further to the other Blackest Night focal characters: Max Lord, Jade, Hawk, the Anti-Monitor and Captain Boomerang?
Max – telepathy!
Jade and Hawk – connection to chaos magic (the star heart and a Lord of Chaos)!! Plus Jade can create constructs (perhaps a new body for someone)!!!
The Anti-Monitor – Massive amount of pure energy!!!!! A power source for whatever needs to come through!!!!!!!!
And Captain Boomerang? Clearly, that’s… for…
Crap.
Um… A ‘boomerang’ is symbolic for “We threw something away and now it’s coming back”? No?
Sigh… So close.
July 14th, 2010 at 8:24 am
@Matt:
If you can’t handle criticism, there’s no need to act like a pissy tool.
July 14th, 2010 at 8:41 am
DC is and will be always better than Marvel…
July 14th, 2010 at 9:10 am
Sounds good to me. The black lanterns haven’t gone away yet anyway so they are hardly coming back. Sweet cover.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:13 am
i have been enjoying brightest day for the most part, and i really loved blackest night, so i am looking forward to finding out more about what this is.
July 14th, 2010 at 11:15 am
They’re gonna have Black Hand and the six back from the dead heroes face off against the 7 Lanterns in a WWF style Survivor Series Match!
Just when Black Hand is gonna lose Batman descends from the rafters with a Black Lantern symbol on his chest. Batman faces the 7 Lanterns then he turns around and ninja kicks Black Hand.
Batman tears off the Black Lantern symbol to reveal his original Batman symbol. Just like when Sting joined the NWO Wolfpack

You idiots just spout without thought don’t you? No idea yet you have an opinion. Listen up all you IGNORANT SLUTS, it’s for HALLOWEEN.
Don’t run your mouth because you know you keep buying it no matter what they do…You whores.
July 14th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
Wow, you fanboy idiots are lame. Hopefully you will get a girlfriend one day.
July 14th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Gotta agree with alot of the folks here. “Epic” is getting lame. Blackest night was damn good. Siege was really good. Better than I was hoping. brightest day.ehh not so much. Xmen vamp stuff? keep it. Im done with the vamp stuff still the teenie bopper soft core romance slash porn stuff is done. I am sooo sick of twilight and the like i can even stand to hear the name anymore. 30 days of night= good vampire story. twilight= bad vampire story. And it looks thats marvel is leaning toward with this storyline. this ongoing blackest night this is something i will see out til the end. i hope i wont regret it. too much anyway.
July 14th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
@GJONES gotta say u be rite my friend. They All seemed to miss that point. kudos to u.
July 14th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
I think that’s Hawk on the cover, not Deadman.
July 14th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
Sweet way better then Marvel who made spiderman gay and use 9/11 as a storyline
July 14th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
I am also getting tried of fans complain about storyline hero customize etc etc their such cowards
July 14th, 2010 at 3:21 pm
Really? With Brightest Day going on, it hardly feels like Blackest Night ever finished. How uninspired, DC!
July 14th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
…and this is part of why I stopped posting at Newsarama. Unbelievable.
This is either part of the Brightest Day story or something for Halloween. But no, some of you find it necessary to bitch and moan about something you don’t have the slightest information about. You guys slay me.
July 14th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Hey Paulski,
Bitching and moaning about people bitching and moaning is still bitching and moaning.
Do you think you’re so much better because you’re bitching about them while they bitch about a lame, already-been-there-done-that idea? At least, they’re on topic.
You just came here to bitch about other people, which makes you more of a grinch then them.
Jeez, and you wonder why the general, non-comic reading public stays as far away from the comic scene as possible.
July 14th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
@GJONES:
This forum is for comic book readers not boorish rednecks who only care about sport and beer!
July 14th, 2010 at 11:07 pm
i like the black lanterns and it was great to see them again (dont forget Nekrons first attempt in the Kyle Rayner’s annual) but this could be too soon. Bring them back a few years from now.
Do not do what Marvel does EVERY year with something that is HOUSE of M related.
Black Lanterns was a great story and gimmick, just don’t over do it
July 15th, 2010 at 11:07 am
Then perhaps you are in the wrong place, “Comic Dude”.
