DOMINIC: Just don't try it at home!

STEPHEN BERGSTROM: Interesting match-up. But if the polar bear has the element of surprise, I see that being the winning edge. Sharks aren't great as long-distance throwing weaponry since once they land they just wiggle around gasping for air. It's science.

Only thing more hardcore than throwing a polar bear would be throwing a polar bear that's holding a shark.

There is nothing more hardcore than throwing a polar bear at someone. Great article. I'm liking the latest update, especially the collar. It's a small thing but it definitely improves on what was already an iconic look.

Peter David's Aquaman was credible, mean and respected. Why did they bring back the retro Aquajoke? He is and always will be a failure!

MAN, there were a lot of comments while I was away at Shore Leave this weekend. Let's see if I can't get to everyone!

JUSS: Hawkman will be up in the future.

JAWAFATHER: It really is a great cover and proof that a man can be threatening even in green and orange.

HONDO: Hey, if it works for you, no reason you shouldn't like it. Fashion and art are very much about personal preference.

MARK: With no covert identity, he doesn't need to worry about fingerprints. Then again, being underwater, he might want gloves for that extra grip to hold onto slippery foes. :-)

BROWN!E: HA! Any time I'm told I'm "not boring", I'm happy. Glad you dug it.

L G BOEX: The yellow gloves didn't have fins and he never wore orange gloves. But thanks for reading so often! :-)

CLAUDIO POZAS: Raistlin and Tanis Forever!!!

DEVIN and DAVID BROOKS: I didn't mention the prison uniform aspect because 1, it was a story point added to a look that had already been around for decades and did nothing to actually change it from a visual perspective, which is what this column focuses on; and 2, it looks like that idea may no longer be in continuity and I try to keep these pieces as clear as possible rather than bring up too much retcon stuff that will make novice comic book fans scratch their head in confusion. The Giffen explanation behind the belt buckle also loses its weight when you consider how often Arthur has changed the buckle's basic design. All of this is simply further evidence of why DC should let me publish my script for AQUAMAN SECRET ORIGIN. A dinosaur would be involved.

CAEU: Both valid points. The reason I didn't mention fins on the calves is because artists haven't been consistent about it.

CRAY_WS: Ooh. Interesting idea for the pants.

DAN: Don't tell ME, tell DC. And have your friends join you in the chorus.

LIGHTFAILURE: Awesome.

ZOS: Right, that's the second Waterbearer outfit.

BRAD: I'm hopeful too.

EVERYONE ELSE: As always, thanks so much for your kind words and praise, it is very much appreciated. Aquaman is one of my all-time fave characters whom I would love to write for one day, so I had a lot of fun doing this article.

Long time Aquaman fan and this was a great article.

Loved the breakdown of each costume and the history of my favorite character that DC loves to neglect. I'm hoping post Brightest Day we get a new series because it's way long overdue(maybe with a Mera backup). Tempest needs to return as well, because his death really hurt me after that fantastic issue Titans #15 by J.T. Khul.

this was a great article that brought back fond memories for me of Aquaman, one of my all time favorite DC characters. My first Aquaman comic was his blue costume 80's mini!! Also a big fan of Peter David's run!! would be so thrilled if DC would start to reprint some of those older stories. Perhaps starting with the saga of Black Manta killing little Arthur, then one big trade of his mini's and special in the 80's and then trades of the Peter David run and whatever came after. I'm hopeful some of this will happen now that he's one of the main stars of Brightest Day and the breakout return of Mera in Blackest Night.

Brilliant article. Nice wrap up, I learned and remembered a LOT of cool details about Arthur.

My ideal version of Aquaman -- either regarding his look or powers -- should be pretty close to this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2oN7IHGgtM

Never played the game (Justice League Heroes), but they managed to make Aquaman look iconic on all levels.

I went to a local brewfest in the city on Sat night, I was wearing my "classic" Aquaman T-Shirt. The Actuall brewers had these cool bowling jerseys with the company logo on it , The brewer was joking about trading for a friends t shirt but was having cold feet , I asked if hed trade it for my Aquaman shirt . He Said "F%&*@ Yeah" and we traded , I got the Brewers shirt and he got mine.

All i need to do is order my new Aquaman shirt tonight :)

This was a great article. Aquaman's one of the best and reading his adventures for so long, even I wasn't aware the costume had had this many alterations!

Jurgen's run was awesome but I just love Dan's work full-stop so I could be bias. Either way add my voice to those looking for a collected edition!

Another great article in this series. I loved the Peter David era look for Aquaman because he looked like Poseidon and indeed really did show how strong the character could be.

I hope David and later Jurgens runs are collected by DC.

I like the mystical left hand. I also like no glove on the other unless it's webbed. The fin on the forearm is hokey to me.

I never seen the water camo outfit, I wouldn't mind seeing him wear that again as a tactical suit for water JLA missions. I like the scale-armor gold, not orange or yellow. The symbolized belt buckle is okay but it wouldn't matter to me if there was just a plain belt.

I have often wondered if his pants should be a lighter shade of green, like teal but shiny and reflective, like water.

Am I the only one that remembers that the orange & green was a Atlantian prisoners uniform, & the reason he always wore it was to remind everyone about how they treated him? Not only that, but the A on his belt doesn't stand for Aquaman, it stands for Atlantis. That way, if a prisoner that had escaped, you would know where he had escaped from.

Nice! I love Aquaman and this was a great history lesson. I definetly learned a few things. I wish you would have mentioned the Keith Giffen mini from the 80's that reimagines the origin of his classic costume as an Atlantean prison jumpsuit. I thought that was smart. Its so nice to read this article and its comments and realize I'm not alone in my love for this character. DC really does need to see that there are readers out here tired of hunting down Aquaman back issues and would appreciate some older stuff in trade.

Very cool article.

I kinda prefer the lower neckline to the new turtleneck. The lower neckline (as seen in the pics done by Jesus Saiz in the article) emphasize his neck and shoulders, which are very developed in a swimmer.

Also, you get bonus points for mentioning Dragonlance! Kudos!

Nice article. I dig it. I didn't know Aquaman had so many costume changes. I do think when he's bare chested or in armor his character "seems" to be taken more seriously. IMO. And that's mainly from an appearance perspective.

cool article. not boring at all for a history lesson on the hero's costumes. i like the hook and the attitude he had back then. can't wait to see what happens to him now.

I actually prefer the costume he sported during the "Sub Diego" storyline with the classic costume sans the gloves and the hand of mystical water. Now that the gloves are back, it seems a bit much.

Aquaman has really grown on me the last couple of years. The IDEA of Aquaman. I'm very interested to see how he develops.

The orange and green is ok, but I'm a fan of the camoflage blue and white from the 80's. That makes tons of sense to me.

Great article, Alan !

great article! I gotta say, the classic will always be my favorite (which includes the current look, since it isn't too far off), but there was just something I really liked about the version of the hook look, when Arthur kept the orange and green but had the long hair and beard. That cover of Aquaman no. 0 is so powerful.

Makes me miss Peter Davids stories. That Aquaman was doing well till DC's top editors stopped the story Peter wanted to tell, ending with David leaving and the book going to hell. And now of having Geoff Johns killing off Dolphin and Garth. So sad.

Alan, terrific fashion *and* historical look at another of my favorite characters. And thanks for encouraging readers to write DC; Aquaman's classic adventures really are great fun, and more of them deserve reprinting. I hope Hawkman is coming soon; he's the other 2nd tier character (in *some* people's minds--not mine!), along with Aquaman, that I like best.
