Fred Van Lente on an Avengers book?

July 7th, 2010
Author David Pepose

It’s looking like Marvel is putting in one more star in its Avengers constellation, as it looks like Fred Van Lente might be taking on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

“So it’s official,” Van Lente wrote on Twitter today. “I’m writing an AVENGERS book.”

That’s not all he’s writing, either — he’s a member of the Amazing Spider-Man Webheads, he’s co-writing Incredible Hercules/Prince of Power/The Chaos War with Greg Pak, he’s working on Iron Man Legacy, the Halo comic and Marvel Zombies 5…

But here’s what I’m curious about with this — what does this mean for Van Lente, and Marvel’s catalog of books? I don’t necessarily think he’ll be taking over any of the recently relaunched books: Van Lente did go on to say, that when the book is announced, “it’s the most “Van Lentean” AVENGERS title ever…” So let the speculation commence! What say you, Rama readers? Let us know what you think!

  1. Chris Shields Says:

I am really happy! This is great news for the fans of the avengers. My guess is the title will be the “Action Avengers”

    Congrats to you Fred.

  2. ostrakos Says:

Now if they could just get rid of Wolverine as a member, I might actually buy an Avengers book.

  3. Russ Burlingame Says:

My guess, based on the VanLentean comment? “Avengers: Noir.”

  4. chuck jones Says:

    Dead Avengers

  5. Simon DelMonte Says:

Great Lake Avengers? Now featuring King James!

  6. Kevin Says:

Cosmic Avengers? Hercules, Cho, Hulk, etc.?

And ostrakos, Wolverine doesn’t appear in either Secret Avengers or Avengers Academy. But then you’d know that if you didn’t just come into threads to complain.

  7. Grimmbear Says:

I think it’s going to be a “cosmic” Avengers title.
They have needed to do this for years seeing as so many Avengers are more space oriented then planet oriented.

  8. Brian Says:

i thought thats what threads were for?

but this is excellent news, and will certainly include hercules and likely cho as well, maybe a new west coast team?!! :D

  9. Brian Says:

I do hope it’s an “in-universe” Avengers title vs. something like Avengers Noir. I’d love to see him on a Hercules-centric Avengers title…maybe bring in some of the members nobody’s doing anything with or induct a few new members. Hey, Jack of Hearts won the “rebirth” lottery in the Underworld issues of Herc…

  10. George M. Says:

Maybe an “Avengers: Legacy” title, similar to what he’s doing with Iron Man?

  11. Riotous Rikk Odinson Says:

Just what the racks need, another Avengers book.

  12. Matt D Says:

He’s my favorite writer in comics today so I’d sort of be happy if he was just writing the entire Marvel line.

  13. Kevin Says:

George, that was another thought I’d had.

  14. Zawisza Says:

    Champion Avengers
    or
    Avengers Champions
    or some such.

  15. Nick Says:

He’s since stated it’s in continuity. I am honestly leaning to him taking over New Avengers, but I sure as heck have no clue.

  16. Chintzy Beatnik Says:

    Next Avengers?

  17. Mike Says:

I’d LOVE for this to finally be the oft-bandied-about Cosmic Avengers idea. Herc would fit perfectly into a concept like that if Van Lente felt like delving into his Layton/Michilinie-era cosmic past.

great point about Jack Of Hearts as well Brian – he never really worked as an earth-based character either.

a cosmic-based team would be a good way to keep Silver Surfer around as well; it’s been a shame to see him just pigeonholed into the cosmic events when applicable (although the cosmic events have been fantastic nonetheless!)

  18. Wade Wilson Says:

I hope it’s the oft-rumoured “Deadpool Avengers”. Expanding on the Deadpool Corps and giving them their own mansion and/or tower. Hopefully with the “Big 3″… Captain Deadpool (the WWII Deadpool), Iron Deadpool (the Golden Deadpool) and Wade, Pool of Thunder.

  19. U_no Says:

I never understand the hate for the Avengers “franchise” considering just how many heroes in the MU are/were officially Avengers. A lot of characters, don’t have the strength to carry a solo ongoing or even a mini, but with the right mix of co-stars in a team-based setting they can shine. I mean where would characters like Hercules, Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Wonderman, Wasp (JVD), Ant-Man and other “classic” characters be if not for the Avengers? With over 5000 characters and properties, more than 50 of them deserve a chance to shine.

  20. Warpath17 Says:

    ostrakos Says:

“Now if they could just get rid of Wolverine as a member, I might actually buy an Avengers book.”

My thoughts exactly. Putting a mass murderer on a team of heroes is one of the dumbest ideas ive ever heard, just because he is popular. What, if Punisher was that popular he would be on the team too?

  21. Jake York Says:

I guess you forgot about, you know, Moon Knight? He’s an Avenger now. Even though he’s not a “killer”, Eric O’Grady isn’t exactley “Avenger material.”

Who cares about Wolverine being on the team, he’s gotten like the least face-time of anyone in the two books he’s supposed to be in.

  22. ExperimentX Says:

Mass murderer?!?! So Bucky Barnes has never killer anyone. I believe he walked around with a machine gun during WWII than because a assassin (Assassins kill people). Moon Knight was killed people. Black Widow was a russian spy so I’m pretty sure she’s killed people. How many people did Area (“The God of War”) kill. And mass murderer says that intentionally goes out and for example, blow up a building which is full of innocent civilian, like Bulleye, who was always on a Avengers team. But I didn’t hear anyone cpmplaining about that. Stop complaining because you made Wolverine popular. But you go crazy over the Thunderbolts, a team the is full of super-villians who’s killed peopple. You’re guys are being hypocrites. And on a side note, people were begging for a Deadpool comic. How many people has Deadpool killed. I don’t people complain about deadpool showing up in almost every comic. Stop complaining.

  23. Laurence J Sinclair Says:

The Incredible Avengers. Or the God Squad Avengers.

  24. dan Says:

    West Coast Avengers?

  25. Fritz Says:

Revengers- Villains who get fed up with getting thier butts handed to them by the Avengers, so they try and get revenge on them. Includes- Living Laser, Basilisk, Armadillo, Madame Masque, and other characters

God Squad- Basically the same team from Incredible Hercules

  26. Xero Says:

Great news if it is true, I love his work.

  27. Aaron Says:

    Avengers Forever?

  28. comic_dude Says:

    Deadpool Avengers??

  29. Matt Says:

So they’re ending an Avengers title already?
Why don’t Marvel just cancel it instead of letting Van Lente ruin it like he does with all the other books he takes over?

  30. Dan Baghdoian Says:

I like Wolverine on the Avengers. I don’t read his monthly title(s) or any of the X-Men books, so it’s a nice way to get my Wolvie “fix” on a regular basis. That’s the wonderful thing about these Avengers titles. I can read about cool characters like Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Hawkeye, etc. without having to buy their titles individually.

  31. anthony Says:

mystic avengers, i mean the only place the mystics show up these days is in avengers titles(dr strange, hellstrom and brother voodoo in new and wiccan/ scarlet witch in young) but it’d also be a good way to intergrate god’s with mortals, personally what i’d like to see is the mysitc side of the MU get a reboot simmilar to the cosmic side with anialhation etc

  32. Frank H MacDonald Says:

Here’s a real kick in the ass….what if his Avengers book is (gulp) Ultimate Avengers. Man, I hope not. I agree with ostrakos, I hate that Wolverine is on 2 Avengers teams (Adjectiveless, and New) as well as the X-Men & X-Force. Just pick an effin’ team book and keep him on ONE team. Also I HATE that Spider-Man is an Avenger as well as the Thing. Just my opinion.

  33. krakkaboom Says:

“I hate that Wolverine is on 2 Avengers teams (Adjectiveless, and New)…Also I HATE that Spider-Man is an Avenger as well as the Thing. Just my opinion.”

I agree. Especially since a real Avenger such as Black Panther hasn’t been used for years, it’s a travesty. Instead, they add more non-Avengers (I’m looking at you, Ben Grimm) to spike sales numbers.

  34. matt meade Says:

Hope its International Avengers with Captain Britain, Union Jack, Pete Wisdom, Black Knight, Toro etc based in Europe, perhaps some french/irish also recruits?

  35. Daniel A. Mohn Says:

FYI, the Marvel Universe Vs. Punisher special that is forthcoming will feature Frank Castle personally raping and maiming select members of Marvel’s current editorial and creative staff. Check it out!

  36. Darren Wilson (Willow616) Says:

Hope its an international team with the likes of Captain Britain, Black Panther, Darkstar and Sabra on it…….probably not, but I’d like it.

  37. Jason Says:

I like the International idea best…
