As soon as "Greek Girl Diva" uses the term "slut" she completely uses credibility.

People need to relax. Seriously. All the costumes will always exist, and it's all in good fun.

Very entertaining and informative article. I had been surfing the web about rumors for a movie when I came across this. With all the changes and incarnations to Diana, it would be a great twist for the modern day Diana incarnation to be a beautiful black skinned woman like Byeonce. Wearing the dark blue leggins. In my twist, her whole outfit is made of a special bullet/fire/everything proof material. The tiara would kick into protective headgear, her daily bracelets would transform into arm fitting gauntlets, and the chest emblem will also expand as an extra protection shield, otherwise it's small and insignificant, like the original that to the common eye might just look like under clothes when she's in her undercover mode. She's soft and gentle but when it comes to a fight scene, the tomboy comes out and no more fighting like a girl. Truly kick ass and fight like Xena did. After all, she is an amazon. I think the lack of appeal is because she is too feminine without the masculine traits, but when you mix the two in just the right level, watch out. She can equal batman if some author made the right storyline.

look we are getting stupid, you just cant take that much iconic gear away and call it the same, like it or not the "Bathing Suit" is her best design, its not to reavealing, it isnt a thong or g-string, it covers, and she has full movement which is one plus, on the other hand I would rather her have the roman or greek skirt which is much cooler, but this new design just isnt Diana

I think the new outfit is good because it fits in with the new story thats going on. Also, this outfit actually makes me think that she can kick some butt(not that the old one didn't just that I feel this one portrays it more). Also, I'm new to this comic book things but I know that the change happened because the storyline has changed and I'm assuming that once WW stops the bad guys everything will be put back to normal. Plus, I think the rebel outfit fits even more because she didn't grow up with her mother since she was killed but raised by those other people therefore the outfit matches. Also, the new bracelets I think are awesome. I think maybe the bracelets should stay gold afterwards but then again they would just blend. Ad unlike many people I am a fan of the leather jacket. I just think its a nice touch. I also, hope that many of the other people that don't like the costume realize it changed because the story line changed. It would make no sense if she still looked the same in an alternate life. It wouldn't give the story that sense of change that has been created.

I hate her new look, I think she is not Diana that I ever know she's not Wonder Woman just a woman with bracelets and lasso.
change the costume makes her lost her original character, I hope when JMS over she will back to her original costume.

I like the Wizard redesign from a few years ago--star-spangled loincloth, shield, tiara with nose-guard that looks like half of a Spartan helmet.

Maybe they should take a page from "Promethea" and have WW be this costumed character in another reality, but manifest somehow in our reality as a more ordinary-looking woman with regular clothes, maybe except for a few special touches.

The new costume was supposed to make her look less slutty, but fails at this--one-piece swimsuit vs. tank-top and too-tight leather pants. I like the *idea* of pants and a jacket, but not these pants or this jacket.

When I saw the design in the Jim Lee image, I quite liked it, but when I saw it in the issue, there was one change that annoyed the heck out of me. The sketch gave the impression of a sleeveless shirt. In action, it's become a halter top, which considering the size of the boobs they've given her (way too large for a fit, active woman), it isn't going to give her any support. Add in the fact that the cleavage became *much* lower, and my annoyance overrides the 'thank heavens she's finally wearing *pants*' positive reaction.

So, nice design, but the artists are already tweaking it to look a little too street-walker for my tastes.

Noticed that you didn't include Alex Ross' star-spangled loincloth design from KINGDOM COME. I really liked that one. Combine that with Jim Lee's knee pad-boot combo and Byrne's larger gauntlets/bracelets and tiara and I think you've got a winner!

I agree with Phil Jimenez: "practical" super hero costumes are no fun. Neither is this new look for JMS' WW run.

Any thoughts on Jim Lee's design for the Stan Lee Wonder Woman?

I like the new bracelets. I had no problem with her bustier (though the way some artists drew it had too much cleavage spilling out) but I agree with changing the blue and star-spangled bikini shorts / skirt into pants. A few white stars on the pant legs or hips would have cemented the look.

I have no real problem with the jacket, but she should be seen without it as often as with it.

The new costume and new "street level" direction is fine for someone else but it just isn't Wonder Woman. She looked "matronly"? I challenge to look at Lynda Carter in that outfit and think "matron". That's my biggest complaint. They tried the "new look, new direction" in the 70's (as noted above) and everyone seems to agree looking back that it was a mistake to move away from the iconic version of the character.

I would say closer to the truth, they are playing the hollywood game. There has been some recent chatter about finally getting a Wonder Woman film off the ground. Hollywood producers seem unable to grasp a female lead who doesn't wear tight leather pants so they're stuffing Diana into a pair and sticking her onto "lower budget" street level sets to make her more pitchable. This is also comic's way of selling it to us, the core fan base, in advance.

Wonder Woman is who she is. She's an icon. People know she's an amazon and a princess who came from a Paradise like island. People know her costume around the world and to hundreds of millions of people, people who never ever read a comic book, they can look at her image and say "Wonder Woman". If anything it's this iconic recognition that will sell her to the broader public.

We should start a pool to bet how long this "change" will last. I say 7 issues and then she will slowly take bits from her previous look and mixing them with this look. And after two years 90 percent of her old look is back. I just wish we had a writer who had confidence enough to write great Wonder Woman stories. No gimmicks, just good stories. Spider-man's costume change to the red and gold "armor" by JMS was a lot of hype too. Now one cares and of course Spiderman is back in his old blue and red look. As for the arguement that her costume is more believeable. So what? She can fly and has been known to pilot an invisible jet. Psst, I will clue you in. No one can fly by just willing to and invisible jets aren't real. Did watching Wonder Woman on the Superfriends ruin anyone's life? Or even her live action show?

As another poster said does Superman's and Batman's underwear on the outside need to be explained or made more "real" too. And before anyone goes off saying how sexiest her old look is why do these same people have no problem with the male heroes? Do Superman and Batman spray paint over most of their body to get that skin tight look? How many steriods would a guy need to take to get as ripped as they are in real life? Where is all the outcry over Namor's green swim trunks look? Have kids been growing up feeling self doubt because they never got the same muscles he had?

I know Namor ruined my life. I always wanted those little wing on my ankles to show up so I could fly. :)

I don't think this industry has freak'in clue about women's fashion when it comes practicability. Wonder Woman is such an old character, I don't think there's anyway DC can change people's mind about how she should look for the new century. Too much sexist history.

The only thing I thought was a great fresh idea that added to Diana's costume was the "W" imprints on her gauntlets. When this is over and she gets back a more iconic looking costume. They should keep that aspect. Not saying they should keep the gauntlets all big but adding the "W" imprint is an interesting idea :)

@dlfurman The design reminds me of a race car driver in a way.

Honestly, I kinda like pieces of WW's new costume. I like the idea of her owning a pair of pants. This is new for her and I really like the idea of it. However, I'm not sold on the execution. Like others have noted, I don't know where her pants end and her boots begin. Giving her more obvious boots would be a nice improvement. And she should lose the jacket. Everything else is good imho. I especially *love* the straps on her top. Makes it more believable when she has a chest that big.

Lord, I hate the Byrne costume - it's so lazy! And I disagree that smaller bracelets make no sense - the smaller the bracelets, the more impressive it is when Diana 'plays' bullets and bracelets. Who couldn't stop bullets wearing fireguards over half their arm.

And Kevin's right, Diana never wore a skirt in the Golden Age, culottes they were!

Fun piece, Mr K!

You know, if the costume were part of a larger movement to put everyone in more practical gear, I could definitely like it.

As it is, I don't think it stands up against the iconic costumes of Superman or Batman, or Flash and Green Lantern for that matter.

But really, if you put them all in similar gear, I think that would be great.

"In one of these adventures, an editorial slip-up led to Diana being called “Donna” by mistake."

FYI, this is the topic of Comic Legends Revealed this week on CBR, and most likely is not accurate. Worth a look.

The new 'bracelets' are keepers for me. Diana isn't invulnerable but often fights like she is. Extra protection and power here makes logical sense. Plus, she's a warrior and along with the skimpier outfit they be a kick ass reminder. 'Yep, I am strong enough that I only need to wear this tiny outfit but don't mess with me'.

Gotta love Mike Deodato Wonder Woman. His art really makes Wonder Woman look good and picture 29 is just stunning. 2 bad i didn't buy Wonder Woman back then. But his run on the book is the one i would buy in trade.

Got high hopes for Don Kramer on this book cause the previews really blew me away, he has come a long way since his Jsa days.

I like the "classic" look Wonder Woman has had.
I don't like the new costume very much.
I did like the Jim Lee look to Wonder Woman.

I would have her have a beautiful face(as opposed to a Greek-y look), and ...I'm not quite sure how to say this but.... I want her to be a little "lusty"... warm, beautiful, somewhat sexy, more woman than warrior, soft, warm and caring... but tougher than nails in a fight.

It's a tough balance for a Wonder Woman to strike,... but that's why I like her. She should be tough, tender, warm, and lusty.

Wonder where you find a Woman like that.??!!

Guess I'll haveto go along with this look for a while... but I'll be happy if she returns to the "old, classic-look".

Just a nitpick, but Diana started wearing her hair over her tiara back in 1955 when Ross Andru started drawing the book. However, he did revert to the previous tiara-over-hair look by 1959 and it did stay that way more often than not until late 1972 (WW #204) when the mod look was done away with and the Nubia story began. The gold belt began then, too.

Besides a brief return to the Golden Age style for WW 207-211 and a white belt for a few issues after that, the revised costume from WW 204 is how things stayed unitl 1982 when the new WW symbol was introduced.
