Wild Guess: Gina Carano as Wonder Woman?

June 30th, 2010
Author Troy Brownfield

I’ve been thinking about the impetus behind Wonder Woman’s new look, and it’s my guess that the change is film-driven. A lot of people have made an issue of the costume over the years in terms of how it would translate to the big screen. Despite the fact that Lynda Carter pulled it off on TV, there are those that think that the outfit will be a hinderance.

Now, here’s the wild guess part: I’m wondering if there’s any manuvering going on to get Gina Carano to play Wonder Woman. The new continuity that was created by the Olympians has Wonder Woman working in more or less a streetfighter-type role at the outset. That would play to the background of Carano, the MMA fighter whom also appeared as “Crush” on “American Gladiators”. Currently, Carano is filming “Haywire” with Steven Soderbergh; she plays the lead, a female spy on the run after a betrayal. Her co-stars include Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Ewan MacGregor, so it seems that more than a few people think that she can act. (Set pics here; note that “Knockout” was the film’s original title, prior to “Haywire”).

So, we’ve got a modified outfit, a streetfighter style, and a company hot to make films based on their characters. And over here, we have a beautiful woman that’s known for physicality and is making an action picture alongside some big names with a superstar director. Now look at the new hair length on Diana . . .

That’s just my wild guess, but I think they’re setting us up for a Gina Carano Wonder Woman. Your take?

Sound good to me. Except they gotta lose that jacket!

  2. George M. Says:

I like the actress, hate the costume.

  3. Nick Says:

Gina really would be perfect for Wonder Woman… if she can act. We’ll see. Let’s hope she proves it in Haywire, though apparently advance reviews aren’t good.

  4. Selena Says:

Carano would make a better Catwoman IMO.

She’s gonna have to take a lot more acting classes though.

I heard her acting isn’t that great in Haywire(pre-screen)

  5. Chris Chiang Says:

I think it’s more wishful thinking than wild ass guess, but good luck on starting a viral rumor. Maybe it will gain traction like the Donald Glover-Spiderman movement.

  6. Mallfunction Says:

I dont think i would mind seeing her in almost no clothes like WW.

  7. Mega Gear X Says:

If Gina should be WW, she’s GOT to have the iconic costume.

  8. Michael Heide Says:

    I just don’t see it.

And for the record, I love the new costume. It’s more practical AND less sexist than the non-timeless original or the countless minor variations of it, while still looking like something that Wonder Woman would wear, especially under the circumstances in the story.

  9. comic_dude Says:

I don’t get the appeal. She looks like a man with tits.

  10. Ozymandas Says:

Maybe. I really hate the new costume. There have been several other past versions – I’m leaning towards the armored versions – that would work fine on film.

  11. JoshF Says:

I am curious about the pre-screens, seems after gleaming the web there isn’t a lot other than pre-screens of the movie have taken place. She could be a good fit, Wonder Woman is supposed to be a strong woman, and a strong woman would have some muscle tone, and not in most cases be a petite woman. (Sorry for the over generalization.) Too early to tell, but she at least has the looks. Whether or not she has the chops, too early to tell. Though actors with zero talent have carried movies in the past.

  12. Roland Says:

Nonsense. Donna Troy’s Wonder Woman costume with accents of the regular costume would look fine big screen. This is bullshit!

  13. Juss Says:

She looks *PERFECT!* I’d love for her to be Wonder Woman! As for the new costume, I’m for it, though I agree with most that the jacket isn’t necessary. I’d also like to see real boots, and for the pants to be lighter, say dark blue.

  14. gwangung Says:

    Can she act?

MUCH more appropriate would be Stana Katic (co-stars on CASTLE). Same kind of look, but she sure as hell can act.

  15. Joe Says:

She was my pick for Wonder Woman from the beginning. She has the right look: beautiful, but strong and physically imposing. I have no idea if she can act, but she looks the part.

I love Jim Lee, but I am not impressed with the new costume. As an Amazon warrior, I can’t accept her with a stylish, hip outfit. I prefer the look Lee did for Stan Lee’s Wonder Woman or Alex Ross’ Kingdom Come warrior outfit. I am just hoping, like the many changes that Superman and Batman have gone through over the years, this look is quick to die. Keep Wonder Woman true to her heritage.

  16. StevenArtist72 Says:

If they go with any look for the Wonder Woman movie I think it should be patterned after the Terry and Rachel Dodson one in the Allen Heinberg run on the Wonder Woman title…the one that Donna Troy wore at the beginning of that as Roland brought up above my post. If they’re so worried of the “sexism” of the trunks? Combine it with a variation on the mini-skirt look as Alex Ross did in Kingdom Come years ago. Honestly, if they can manage to make Wonder Woman jump around and throw punches in the old Lynda Carter tv series without her WonderBoobs flopping out, then I’d think they can manage the same in a new movie…even with more high-octane stunts and combat…just a matter of cutting out any BIG BOOB REVELATIONS!!! ;D
On the new comic book costume, it’s not the design I’d have gone with, but for the sake of that story being an alternate reality tale, it passes. The classic will make the inevitable return, I’d say. You can go around and change the more iconic characters like Superman, Batman, Spidey, or Wonder Woman all you want, but the classic look always seems to win out. Remember when the Wally West Flash had a costume update in the early 90s from the Barry Allen costume? They went back to it eventually. And now that Barry is back, Wally is in a new variation of that early 90s updated costume. I’d say go with the Terry and Rachel Dodson look.
On Gina Carano as Wonder Woman, I can see it. But if it were me who were casting the part I’d go with a dark haired Malin Akerman. She had a very Wonder Womanish quality to her in her fighting and performance in Watchmen as Silk Spectre II and is a classic beauty. Also she’d seem believable in the role as a strong female warrior-princess while retaining enough of that sex-appeal that Wonder Woman has. I mean, as much as a lot of people complain over the over-sexualization of the character, you have to admit that she was created by Dr. William Moulton Marston with a very heavy influence of sexuality. Read up on Dr. Marston and his personal life and how that equates to the creation of the character of Wonder Woman. He and his wife shared an estate with his Olive Burne…who like his wife sired his offspring and after he passed she and Mrs. Marston remained together as a couple and raised their children together until the day they too passed on. Also are little things like Burne wore metal bracelets on both wrists a lot and Dr. Marston being one of the guys who helped create The Lie Detector…which if you think of it, had a loop that went around your torso over your heart to read if you were lying. Think of that loop then think of Wonder Woman’s Magic Lasso Of Truth and how she’d catch people in it and compell them to tell the truth. Interesting stuff. ;)

  17. Mike Says:

In my humble opinion, I don’t think that they are “setting up” for this to happen.

However, I think “Crush” looks the part more than anyone else I have seen so far, but if the acting chops aren’t there, it will be a waste of time.

Also, I like the new outfit to some degree, but if they are going to make the first WW film, ever, she should probably be wearing the iconic outfit.

  18. DidioForever Says:

I thought this was going to be an actual news article, more fool me

How come Newsarama is getting so clogged up with all these self-indulgent ‘Sepculative’ articles?

    It’s driving me nuts

    GIVE ME NEEEWWWSSS!

  19. DidioForever Says:

And why do so many comic fans always rally for our favourite characters to be played by lookey-likey werstling/sport personalities instead of actual actors?

    Yeesh.

  20. Matt D Says:

I sincerely doubt the change was movie-driven unless JMS was working on the movie as well, which is a possibility.

Look at how unconnected his DC runs seem to be with the rest of the DCU. Look at why he left Thor. Look at how Quesada and he haven’t even spoken (I think Joe Q said that recently).

I just don’t think this was a top down decision. I think this was them giving JMS free rein to do whatever he wanted as part of the terms of him jumping over during the biggest and most successful part of his hollywood career and this was the story he came up with and this was the sort of costume that fit along with it.

  21. Ben Says:

Yeah, one of my first thoughts was that they were giving her a more practical outfit as a precursor to a possible feature – especially since JMS is writing and he’s got one foot in Hollywoodland. I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple other “more practical” outfits popped up along the way here and there during JMS’s run.

  22. Death Cry Says:

I can see some of the elements being introduced as having an effect on the movie, the costume certainly being the main one.
I in no way can see this having anything to do with one particular actress.
Except for the uniform, there is no reason the comic origin/status quo has to match the movie at all. I when I mean except for the uniform, it would be a non-0starter for the movie WW to show looking like the new WW, if the comic WW still looked the same as she always has.
@DidioForever: Professional wrestlers’ physiques are usually closer to how a character is drawn, than most actors are.

  23. Johnnywalkerblack Says:

That’s in the right direction for the Physicality of Wonder Woman but seems a bit short. Check out Blood and Bone starring Michael Jai White, Gina is in that movie doing a little acting.

  24. mercwiththemouth Says:

Gina is beautiful and strong, and I’d watch her in a WW movie.

  25. Shinma Says:

She’s though and still beautiful, though I doubt this costume change is geared towards making it live action movie. I must stress that even I’m mostlly open to new reimagining for popular characters the version of JMS is waay to different, it feels like a new character, it might be a good a idea for the Earth One series but not for the regular DCU.

I also dislike the new outfit, not for messing with the classic but for the fact that is just too plain, it strikes me as something wondergirl(cassie) would wear. It just throws away everything that makes WW special, the whole greek myth hero is replaced by another female urban hero , which DCU have more than enough. I know DC have done stuff like this in the past(blue electric Superman anyone?) and then return to the classic without breaking a sweat, so I’m not really concerned about it, but if WW movie is in the making they should ask people like George Perez and Gail Simone that always made intereseting stories ’bout the character without cutting out the core elements of it, and stay away from this new version.

Heck, I’ve been curious for quite some time about the WWII era WonderWoman movie script that WB bought(but didn’t produced) that even they liked it but they didn’t want a retro ww movie, now the timing may not be correct with Cap America’s on it’s way, but WB seems to really struggle to produce a nice WW live movie(the animated one was terrific) then why not give that script a shot?

  26. Pat Says:

I usually don’t like the idea of casting people not known for their acting skills to play superheroes — roles that require that extra level of actorly skill to overcome their inherent ridiculousness in live-action — but Wonder Woman strikes me as uncommonly problematic to cast. Every “real” actress I’ve seen suggested for the role is too damn skinny to pass as ANY superhero (and would probably be unwilling to pack on the required muscle mass for a movie that wouldn’t earn them an Oscar for the physical transformation), and that’s probably going to be the case for most women working in Hollywood given the industry’s unfortunate body-image standards. Going outside the box and getting an athlete — especially when there’s one with the right look AND an interest/aptitude for acting (which can only be enhanced by working with an accomplished director like Soderbergh) — might actually the right way to go for WW.

  27. XK Says:

I love the new costume, and think that physically, Gina could make a good WW. I don’t know what her acting abilities are like though, which is an obviously important question, assuming the movie is not intending to veer directly into ‘camp’.

But the bigger problem is that Gina is simply not a big name. It’s VERY hard to get a studio to pony up the money for a female-headlined film anyway these days, (as they traditionally perform more poorly than male-headlined or ensemble films), but to do so without a big name as your actress? With a character that’s arguably not even a huge draw (sales-wise) in comics?

Those are a couple of huge strikes against the idea. The studio have to pair her up with an established actor (maybe playing trevor) that they felt was bankable, sell it on the basis of director/technology, (as done with Avatar… and I’m not sure how you could do so with a WW movie), or severely limit the budget to reduce risk.

  28. Commander Obvious Says:

    @ a couple of people . . .

It’s the blog, not the main page. It’s FOR opinion and speculation. Geeez.

  29. BadThingUS Says:

Actually, I was thinking that because she’s now wearing pants and a jacket and I’m wearing pants and a jacket that I was being groomed to play Wonder Woman.

Seriously, that’s the level of the logic going on here.

  30. Jeremy Says:

The change in costume should have no link with Gina playing WW or not. She would make a fine WW, but that new costume sucks.

  31. DT Butchino Says:

SOLD! When does it come out?

  32. crokies Says:

I don’t know why, but I still think Anne Hathaway would be more than perfect for Wonder Woman.
And I don’t think I’ll ever begin to think otherwise.

  33. and one Says:

Why do they always try to change the iconic costumes just to change it back?

Jennifer Love Hewitt was lobbying for the part a while back. Hopefully she tightened up that rear from the paparazzi shots a few years ago.

  34. Ed Says:

Hey, BadThings, it’s a guess, you moron. He wasn’t try to solve the DaVinci code. He’s making a guess based on style. Jesus, have some fun with it.

  35. Chris Says:

BRIDGET REGAN from “Legend of the Seeker”!!!

    ‘Nuff said.

  36. ghost fiction Says:

Gina Carano would work. She’s more athletic than the average Hollywood starlet and probably they’re ass too..Bridget Regan included

  37. Alacrity Fitzhugh Says:

Interesting. Yes, but only if she can act.

  38. Alacrity Fitzhugh Says:

… but on the topic of Gina… how about Gina Torres? A little dark, perhaps, but otherwise perfect.

  39. I-Ching Says:

Nah…I don’t see this as connected to a movie. They’ve never gone to the comicbook first to make changes to the movie given the extremely smaller number of readers compared to movie viewers. They’d just have a Hollywood costume designer come up with something that the producers of the flick liked. The comicbook costume is irrelevant if they want to change it.

Personally I don’t see the costume as an issue for DC/WB and the potential movie. We’ve seen her in it in animated, toy and live action form so they’re more concerned with BRANDING and keeping it consistent than a radical change where she’ll be unrecognizable to those who’ve seen her on tv.

I do think the costume would be much less satin tights in a big screen form but we’ve seen Spider-man, Iron Man, Batman and Superman with belted underwear on the outside all successfully make the leap to the big screen. While we’ve seen other just fall flat when they tried to reinvent them….X-Men, Catwoman, Punisher and that dreadful new Phantom.

This was a needed sales jolt/gimmick, that’s all.

  40. Murphy Says:

    @comic_dude
Huh? I don’t know what men look like in your universe but Gina does not look like a man. And since we are insulting real people; you probably look like a pig.

  41. Jerome Maida Says:

Actually, I have it on good authority that it is Clare Kramer that is being considered:

    Check out the link.
O personally think she would be AN EXCELLENT CHOICE.

  42. Destron Commander Says:

Suddenly, the new WW costume don’t seem as far-fetched anymore…

  43. Red Mask Says:

Keep on dreaming, Troy! I think the new costume makes WW look like a grown up Sailor Mercury.

I don’t get the appeal. She looks like a man with tits.

Doesn’t that count for almost all woman that they are man with tits?

  45. Woofus Says:

Linda Carter “pulled it off on TV”? Yikes! Cover the eyes of the young ‘uns!

I think they should turn WW into an Asian, and forget the lasso and all that–just have her do kung fu.

  46. Kal-El Fan Says:

I would love to see Gina as Wonder Woman. I’m not sure about a movie set in this alternate universe though. I’d prefer to see the mainline Wonder Woman in a film.

  47. ThunderGod23 Says:

I think Gina Carano is a perfect match to play Wonder Woman IF she can act.

  48. Ayindi Says:

    @Pat
I agree with you man great comment!

  49. Richard in Las Vegas Says:

This only works if people buy the new look if people start burning the new comics DC just wasted a year issues that could have been better used to get the original Wonder Woman ready for the big screen.

  50. Anal Surprise Says:

    comic_dude Says:
    > I don’t get the appeal. She looks like a man with tits.

If this is what you see when you look at men, maybe there are personal issues you’ve yet to deal with.

  51. IanB Says:

Anyone here think that the MMA girl can play Regal?

Anyone here that saw LOTS that didn’t see Princess Diana everytime Bridget Regan walked into the freaking frame?

    Anyone?

  52. Jeff Says:

The new costume is lovely it just ain’t Wonder Woman. She’s not “steet level”. They’ve tried the whole kung-fu direction before too, back in the late 60′s early 70′s and it bombed. Why are they trying so hard to stuff a square peg into a round hole?

Either a) Make a “Wonder Woman” film or B) create a kick-ass new character and stick her in a film. This option C (Make a new character, and attach the Wonder Woman name to it) really just doesn’t work for me.

The best remembered modern version of the character in comics is the George Perez version and as I understand it it sold pretty well too. So do THAT in a film, make some money and make everyone happy.

  53. Red Mask Says:

When WB officially gives us a trailer, we’ll have something real to talk about.

  54. Tom Says:

I kept reading everywhere that Clare Kramer was being considered. Made a call and confirmed it, she is. They like the physique, age and what she looked like with darker hair in Skulls. I think she’d be great.

  55. charles Says:

How about her just staying in mma? Just a thought because I would rather watch her fight than act.

  56. Phil Leibfried Says:

I agree with Ian B – Bridget Regan bears the best resemblance to WW – AND she can act and kick butt.

  57. David Vartanyan Says:

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

    PEOPLE, LISTEN TO ME:

The next time you speculate that any given actress is being groomed to play Wonder Woman, MAKE DAMN SURE that the producers/writers behind the movie that said actress is in are actually WW fans & have an actual agenda. The guys behind Haywire are not. Had it been JMS or Phil Jimenez, then maybe.

Everything else is just your delusional thoughts. Get rid of them.
