From the high seas of the Carribbean to the weirdness of Wonderland, is Johnny Depp about to take a trip in the TARDIS next?
Tor.com is reporting that there are some rumors afloat that Captain Jack Sparrow himself will be starring as the Doctor in an upcoming film. Be prepared to take this with an entire shaker of salt, as their original sources are pretty shaky (and the original posts apparently have been taken down).
According to Tor, Russel T. Davies (the alleged writer of this project) said that the Doctor would be “on a journey through time and space with a crew of volunteers treating humanity’s illnesses brought on by invading aliens. He cures the bubonic plague and then goes to Africa to fight Ebola.” Yet Tor quickly notes that Davies, in his book The Writer’s Tale, has admitted to lying about story elements in the past.
So with that all in mind, we’ve got ourselves a bonafide rumor on our hands. What say you, Rama readers? We savvy with Johnny as the new Doctor? Or are we responding with a resounding “what?” Sound off!

I can actually see Depp as a very young version of the First Doctor. It’s bizarre, and probably will piss some people off, but I like it.

Taking the title of the show a little too literally hey?
He’s not that kind of Doctor. Said so in this series I think.

1. I love seeing Mr. Depp in almost anything. But I don’t see him bringing anything new to Doctor Who. He tends to coast in roles this one of late. He’s still good in such parts, but he was not at the top of his game in, say, Alice in Wonderland.
2. We don’t need a movie. The show is doing fine and a movie – especially one that would be a new continuity – would not serve the franchise well.
3. If there were to be a movie, most fans of the show would want to see Tennant, or Eccleston, or Smith. And while the average American movie goer might not know the difference, the show is huge in the UK. People there would know and care.
4. I think RTD is making up the plot. It doesn’t sound like his sort of thing at all. Then again, I also want RTD to stay as far away from the Doctor as he can now. He did a great job updating the concepts, but the most recent season proved to me that other people can do a far better job.

Bring back Tennant either in a movie or have the Doctor regenerate back into Tennant for the 12th Doctor. Now that would be great. Just Google Doctor Who and all the images are of Tennant.

Doctor Who is British, while I am American and love Johnny Depp, he is not suited for this role. If a movie is produced, it should address back-story for those events already referenced as teasers within the series and not collide, confuse, or create discontinuity with the present series. A great goal would be to provide a full feature exploration of the Time War and include the regeneration of the Doctor from the 8th to the 9th.
