Morgan Spurlock Comic-Con Documentary Still Looking for Subjects

Back in February, word got out that a Comic-Con documentary was in production, courtesy of Morgan “Super Size Me” Spurlock along with Joss Whedon, Stan Lee and Harry Knowles; a veritable dream team when it comes to things like making documentaries about Comic-Con.

About a month ago, Spurlock was soliciting for folks looking to participate in the doc, hoping to find die-hard Comic-Con attendees to follow as part of the film’s narrative. You’d think they’d be inundated with responses and turning people away by now, but apparently they’re still searching for a few good fans: a post today on Bleeding Cool shows that producers are “looking for people who love Comic-Con,” specifically “original, eccentric, funny, touching, and mildly obsessive people.”

Does your love for Comic-Con demand to be preserved on celluloid? Tell us in the comments.

I’m a bit…hesitant…about this. It seems likely this’ll be mostly a “Aren’t these guys a freakshow?!” documentary a la “Jesus Camp.”

Russ, no way these guys will do that. These are terminal geeks, people who love Comic-Con. I could think of no better team to capture the real essence of Comic-Con and the insane experience that it is. Of course some of the subjects must look like insane freakshows, but that’s because there are insane freakshows that go to Comic-Con. That’s one of the reasons we love Con!

Maybe I ought to sign up just to get the chance to meet Joss and Morgan (oh, and that guy Stan whatshisname).

I do think whoever is trying to cast this is going about it all wrong. Which is probably why they’re having trouble finding people. While Morgan Spurlock, Joss Whedon, Stan Lee and Harry Knowles do speak toward this being a very affection documentary about Comic-Con, I do agree with Russ — these casting calls make it sound like it’s going to be “Look at the freaks.”

“Original, eccentric, funny, touching, and mildly obsessive people” does sound better than some of the earlier calls so maybe someone did alert them to fact that the way they were going about this was turning away the very people they were looking for.

Have you seen the minidocs on comic conventions (on I think was specifically ComicCon) that Kevin Smith did for the Tonight Show? Even if it is a geek doing it, it still turns into a mocking fest on the freakshow aspect. Geeks have been burned waaaaaay too much to trust a documentary
