Loeb’s 2nd SUPERMAN/BATMAN Arc Getting DVD Treatment

June 28th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

UPDATE: MTV Splashpage has confirmed the news, as well as gotten a bit of casting. Geek entertainment veteran Summer Glau, of Firefly and Sarah Connor Chronicles fame, will be voicing Supergirl! Still no official word, however, if the animation will follow Michael Turner’s art as a template.

Well, this is just Jeph Loeb’s day, ain’t it?

This morning, Marvel announced that Jeph Loeb is now Executive Vice President, Head of Television, and will be in charge of bringing more Marvel properties to TV. Now, according to Superman Homepage, who acquired the cover art for the next DCAU project, we learn that another arc of his Superman/Batman run is coming to small screens via DVD.

After Superman/Batman: Public Enemies‘ success, Warner Home Video will be bringing Superman/Batman: Apocalypse to DVD and Blu-Ray on September 28, 2010. An official announcement is expected at Comic-con International: San Diego this July. The cover art shows Darkseid and the “Evil Supergirl” designed by deceased artist Michael Turner. These were the two key characters in the second arc of Jeph Loeb’s run, used to re-introduce Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El to the DCU.

Also of note is the bottom corner of the case… wherein the next short film, Green Arrow, is also announced.

Bruce Timm did just assure viewers that more DC Animated videos were on the way. What do you think of the next feature?

  1. Michael Says:

I think these beat any Live Action Comic Book movie I would love to see Rock of Ages next or maybe Superman red and Blue. since batman brave and the bold is doing the starro storyline why not do a movie on it as well

    As for short films
    Statics Shock
    The Flash(all of them)
    Steel
    Booster Gold

  2. Mark D. White Says:

Maybe they’ll do “The Rise of Arsenal” next… ;)

  3. Owen Gieni Says:

That cover looks like Clayton Crain art to me.

  4. Christopher Myers Says:

Judas Contract…there are enough fans! Check out TitansTower!

  5. Sam Says:

Nice! Hopefully they will try to keep Turner’s art like they did with Public Enemies and Ed McGuinness

  6. Jack Says:

Glad they are still doing these… but there are so many other arcs & stories I’d rather see. Dark Knight, Justice, Kingdom Come, Rock of Ages, or even a take on All Star Superman.. Just to name a few..

  7. LLC Says:

Why?!? Public Enemies was the first of the DC animated movies that I did not purchase…rented it first and saw that it was a disaster. Why has everyone suddenly decided Loeb is the bee’s knees? Did Seasons 2 and 3 of Heroes teach them nothing?

  8. jack Says:

it superman batman sold better then every other movie they want more money. besides it’s based on his story not him directing the damn thing hell most people liked the first movie.

  9. The_nameless_one Says:

Jeff Loeb’s work is overhyped – why give him a second DVD when he doesn’t even work for DC right now? There are hundreds of other stories that are much better (could you imagine Kingdom Come animated?!!)

Bruce Timm – PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give us something different…

  10. RunnerX13 Says:

@ LLC – What does Heroes have to do with adapting one of Loeb’s comic stories? With the recent announcement that Loeb is taking a senior position with Marvel’s TV entertainment, it’s highly likely that he’ll have no involvement here

  11. Brightest Day Says:

For voice casting for Public Enemies is what sold me on it. Personally, I’m not a fan of McGuinness’ blocky Superman and Batman, but the cast, plot, and way the movie was edited all made up for that. If they keep the voice cast and can capture Turner’s style, I think this could be better than Enemies.

  12. KET Says:

I take it that Loeb’s prior TV and movie credentials are playing a strong hand with the idea of transforming these weak comic book tales of his into DC animated DVDs. His reintroduction of Supergirl in particular was such a ridiculous demonstration of vapidity.

And as for the teaser blurb for Green Arrow….oh boy, this can’t be good, considering where he is now.

  13. Steve Says:

To all of these people begging for Kingdom Come, The Dark Knight Returns and all these truly EPIC comic book stories, do you really think that the current 70 minute format that these direct to dvd movies adhere to will do them justice? The answer is a resounding NO. Every one of these movies has barely made it past the one hour mark and that’s not likely to change any time soon. I would love to see Kingdom Come or All-Star Superman or The Dark Knight Returns, but not if it means they have to butcher the story to make it fit in their 70 minute box. Compare The Death Of/World Without A/Return Of Superman saga and how it was adapted for the dvd movie Superman: Doomsday. Can you imagine that happening to Kingdom Come or The Dark Knight Returns?

  14. Steve Says:

As for the art direction, McGuiness’ steroid-enhanced art style really detracted from the Public Enemies movie. I don’t think Turner’s anorexic style will work much better.

  15. Shaun Says:

I have to agree with Steve that the 70 minute format, which is one of the big reasons why I never buy these things, would not be a good fit for an epic tale like DKR or KC. Until WB is willing to give these things a true feature-length approach, I think just about anything they offer up is going to fall short.

Anyhow, I too am surprised that they’re going back to Loeb again. Given the vitriol that his work seems to bring out in people, I wouldn’t have guessed that. I think it’s the mere fact that Bats and Supes sell better than any of the rest of DC’s characters that is making this happen. I will say that while I despise Public Enemies (the comics, I didn’t bother with the movie) I think this Supergirl arc is a better story. Better art for that matter. So maybe this one will work. Bring back Conroy to voice Bats and I might consider this one if the reviews are pretty good. OK, I’ll probably rent it as opposed to buying it.

If they want to keep going back to Loeb’s work for story ideas, I’d like to see them go back to the stuff of his I really liked… The Long Halloween (with a Dark Victory sequel?), Hush (hey, I liked it) and Superman For All Seasons would all be fine choices, and much better than the Superman/Batman stuff. In fact, I think Supes For All Seasons is a rare case where the tale would suit the 70 minute format wonderfully (and I’d enjoy seeing that Sale art on the screen!).

  16. cable82 Says:

Loeb’s and Turner’s Supergirl story was one of the best team-ups D.C. has ever had. Turner was one of the best artists ever in comicdom and Loeb did a hell of job on Superman/Batman. It should make for an excellent animated movie. As for the Public Enemies movie, that one was really good as well and hopefully they can capture the art style in the the Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. I think the cover looks like Clayton Crain art too.

  17. Mike Says:

This looks to be great! I wasn’t a fan of the “Public Enemies” story — in comic or animated form — but I am a fan of the “Supergirl” story and I’m really looking forward to this one as an animated feature. I just hope that Bruce Timm and Company can pull off and salvage some of Michael Turner’s art style for the animation designs. If they are just going to reuse the Ed McGuiness-based designs from “Public Enemies,” I’ll pass.

  18. Jamesb3 Says:

You make a good point, Steve, and I hate their continued insistence on that 70 minute time constraint. It is clear why they are doing that – they are developing these movies less for the DVD market than they are for 1.5 hour broadcasts on Cartoon Network. As a result, the stories suffer. I would love to see Kingdom Come animated, but not at the expense of the story. I really wish they would recognize the constraint that the limited time block is putting on the product.

  19. Ryan Says:

This DVD was announced months ago. Only the cover art is new.

Also coming from DC Animated DVD line within the next year is another Green Lantern movie, and BATMAN: YEAR ONE.

  20. Ryan Says:

I’d say the reason they chose this particular story had something to do with continuing the great response they had to PUBLIC ENEMIES, sure … but I’m also wondering if this doesn’t have something to do with familiarizing audiences with Darkseid and Apokalips, just as they appear on the 10th season of Smallville this fall.

It adds to the brand awareness and creates synergy between the two productions so if you watch and enjoy one, you might go check out the other.

  21. Ryan Says:

PUBLIC ENEMIES was well-received, but it still only the second best selling DVD they’ve released and the third highest grossing.

    See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_Universe_Original_Animated_Movies#Sales

SUPERMAN/DOOMSDAY sold 678,652 copies for a total gross of $9,406,687.

BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT sold 392,080 copies for a total gross of $8,028,341.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES sold 446,017 for a total gross of $6,933,966.

To date, the least sold title has been JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS ($4,048,946 gross; 263,598 copies). That may have something to do with the fact that it is also the most recently released, so those numbers may still increase. It may still outsell JUSTICE LEAGUE: NEW FRONTIER, which was the worst selling title until CRISIS ($5,213,054 gross; 299,144 copies) and it may take back that honor very soon. Or it may not.

Either way, the JUSTICE LEAGUE titles are selling very poorly. That may also have something to do with their choice of stories.

  22. Cisco Kid Says:

Very cool. I’m not always Loeb’s biggest fan, but his 25 issue arc in Superman/Batman was a lot of fun. Omnibus please?

Related to the article specifically: “deceased artist Michael Turner” read strangely, maybe it was just me. Isn’t the word “late” usually used in that context?

  23. DWright Says:

It’s a great, much more self-contained story than Public Enemies. Steve is absolutely correct about the 70 minute format killing the possibility of these things, and I am loathe to see any of my favorites taken on by them in this format. While my inner fanboy enjoyed all the different heroes in “P.E.”, I have no idea how the average, non-comic reading public got any of those appearances. I would hate to see Rock of Ages or Judas Contract do anything that looks like a DCAU version of those stores. Only Gotham Knights has avoided this trap, and I am scared of Year One.

This story makes some sense in this format. Also, Wonder Woman was a major player in this story, and if they stick to the story, four heroes who have all carried movies or at least a TV show is like printing money.

  24. DWright Says:

Oh, and to be fair, I had forgotten about New Frontier, which I thought was made for the format and I really enjoyed it…still was hurt by the 70 minute limit though.

  25. Shaun Says:

Batman: Year One would seem irrelevant after a little something called BATMAN BEGINS, which was all kinds of awesome and pretty much used that same story as its blueprint. I will say, however, that if they can give Year One a proper running time, capture the same look that the comics did, AND if Kevin Conroy is on board I would likely buy that one. But only if all of those things happen.

I am really curious to know what the Green Arrow story will be. GA: Year One was really excellent, and that would make for a good movie (although I’d prefer it live action, with Josh Holloway as Ollie). Otherwise, how about The Longbow Hunters? Screw everything that’s happened with GA lately… Go back to the Mike Grell era, please.

  26. Devil_Hanzo Says:

I’m hoping Conroy, Daly, and since Darkseid is in this; Ironside will all work together again on this movie.

Also hoping that “S/B:Absolute Power” will be next, as I really enjoyed that arc, and if they can translate Pacheco’s art to the screen, that’s gonna be awesome!

  27. Shaun Says:

Why fear Year One? I mean, I understand that you wouldn’t want to see it done badly… But I think it would also be a tough story to mess up. Of course, like I said above, I would want it to to capture the same look as the books, be given more than just 70 minutes, and having Conroy is a MUST.

You mentioned Gotham Knight, and that was interesting… It was really the only case where a DCAU movie actually took some chances and tried something ambitious and different. I think it was only partially successful… Some segments were really well written and looked sensational (esp. the last two as I recall), others were just dreadful in story and art alike.

I thought there was great potential in the idea, however, and the art style of the final segment would make for an excellent run of animated Batman films, or even a Gotham Knights TV series(that could run on Adult Swim, or maybe HBO?). Personally, I think just churning out half-assed, animated versions of comic stories we’ve already read (or retelling origin tales in some cases) isn’t terribly interesting. Wonder Woman was a pretty decent movie though.

  28. Shaun Says:

Yes… Along with Conroy, Daly (although I’m fine with Newbern if Daly can’t) and Ironside all need to be on this movie. That would go a long way towards making it a movie worth seeing.

  29. DWright Says:

Shaun, that’s exactly why I mentioned Gotham Knight, because I loved the risk-taking and the new animation styles that diverged from the Timm-verse, showing the possibilities of the format, even when they weren’t necessarily successful.

As for Year One, I think the way you mess it up is by sanitizing it for children and making it a part of the trad. DCAU, rather than being true to the source material. The really dark side of the world Batman inhabits made that work for me, and I’d rather not see it done than done poorly.

  30. Supergirl's Pal Says:

This is excellent news! I loved the story arc, and I am counting down the days until this movie comes out. Looking forward to the trailer on the upcoming Under the Red Hood DVD so we can see what part of the Supergirl story will be kept, dropped, or modified. I do hope they keep Wonder Woman’s role in it.

Lets hope Loeb can bring a live action She-Hulk program to TV or cable.

  31. Adam Garcia Says:

I’d kill for a Max Fleischer inspired adaptation of the novel “It’s Superman!”

  32. demoncat Says:

Glad to see the things are not dead and figured sooner or later another supes bats team up would happen since the first one did well. and love the shorts. still would love them to try and do kingdom come and dark knight returns maybe as a series of dvds.

  33. Walter Says:

It would be a shame NOT to have Turner represented in this film. Both the story and art work are amazing. I’m very excited about the decision to bring this story to life DVD/Blue ray! Wise choice fellas. I THANK YOU!
    Walter

  34. js Says:

So I hope WW is in this. But watching that cover I doubt it. No doubt they will find a reason to say why she is not integral to the plot again.

And please don’t let them touch Kingdom Come and Dark Knight Returns until they can do it beyond the 70 min running time cause they are known to massacre iconic stories.

  35. Skott Says:

PLEASE keep the original voices like they did for Public Enemies! It’s much easier for me to buy them and enjoy them if the characters sound they way they should!

  36. batfan86 Says:

I didn’t read this story, but if it’s as bad Public Enemies, I won’t be purchasing this one either.

  37. Shaun Says:

It’s not the greatest story ever, Batfan, but it’s not terrible. In fact, it’s actually pretty good. Better than the rest of Loeb’s S/B run, at least.

@DWright: Sounds like you and I are thinking the same thing when it comes to how they could, potentially, mess up Year One. I hope they won’t, but I could imagine it happening given how weak most of the DCAU movies have been.

But then, as I said earlier, why make it at all when Year One was essentially made into Batman Begins?

  38. Geekgazette Says:

I’d like to see a Legion of Superheroes(Great Darkness Saga would be awesome), JLI, or some elseworlds stories made into animated movies. Gotham by Gaslight or Red Son would be great.
While I’m wishing for things that will never be, I’d like to see a Blue Beetle(Ted Kord) & Booster Gold, Captain Marvel, Powergirl, Animal Man and/or Captain Atom film.

Alternate headline suggestion: Awful Comic To Become Awful Movie

It’s disheartening that DC/WHV chooses to adapt sub-par stories such as these instead of taking advantage of their countless other, much more interesting properties. But if more fans would support their other projects (such as the aforementioned Wonder Woman movie) instead of just buying anything with Batman and Superman in it, maybe we’d have better options.

  41. SteveH Says:

    Oh, the humanity!

  42. Ryan Says:

TV Guide reports that Daly and Conroy will be back as Superman and Batman, respectively. They also have a look at Supergirl, so you can see how the animation will look.

  43. SAMURAI36 Says:

What are people talking, about that S/B weren’t great stories? The re-introduction of Kara was nothing short of Amazing, and the Public Enemies DVD was excellent.

Maybe people are talking about Loeb’s Marvel stuff, that I don’t read anyway.

But as far as possible stories, it’s high time that DC brought Captain Marvel to life in his own movie.

  44. Shaun Says:

Nah… Loeb’s run on S/B wasn’t terribly good, although the Supergirl tale was probably the best of the bunch. Generally speaking, I haven’t cared much for the S/B title no matter who’s writing.

It’s not because I don’t love the characters. I just think the books have been poorly written much of the time. The arc where Supes tries to rid world of kryptonite was pretty good though… And it looks like the most recent arc might be interesting too (although I haven’t picked it up). It’s just not a title that excites me, which is too bad because it should.

Loeb, however, lost his ability to plot and execute good stories a long time ago.

  45. Ryan Says:

In addtion to Glau, Conroy and Daly … Andre Braugher will voice Darkseid and Ed Asner will reprise the role he played in Superman Animated Series as Granny Goodness. There is no mention of Wonder Woman at this time.
