Could It Be True? ‘The Green Hornet’ Trailer is Online!

June 22nd, 2010
Author Albert Ching

It’s been a very, very, very (very!) long time in the making, but the first trailer for the feature film adaptation of The Green Hornet is out for public consumption. For years attached to Kevin Smith, whose vision for the property is now being released as a comic book miniseries from Dynamite, the film is directed by visual whiz Michel Gondry, written by Pineapple Express team Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and starring unconventional action hero Rogen as the title character and Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou as Kato.

Psyched? You gotta wait even longer. At one point slated for release this month, the film was bumped to December, and is currently scheduled for January 14, 2011, due in part to 3D conversion. Too far away? Not far enough? Let us know.

  1. Wesley Smith Says:

The most ominous words in filmmaking: “Coming this January.”

  2. JimShelley Says:

Yeah, a January release date does sort of put it after all the big holiday films…not a good sign.

Not how I would have liked to seen a Green Hornet movie play out, but better than I feared.

  3. Brandon Yates Says:

Not to seem like a negative internet guy, but this trailer didn’t do it for me. Definitely a DVD rental though.

  4. Jeff Says:

Could we just keep Kato and drop the Green Hornet parts?

  5. Tony Vaughn Says:

    To quote multiple ‘Star-Wars’ characters….

“I have a bad feeling about this!”

  6. I_Captain Blanco Says:

I have no particular affection for the Green Hornet character, and this STILL feels like the filmmakers have p*ssed all over my childhood…

  7. TheCritic Says:

Wow, from what I’ve just viewed in the trailer, all I can say is…”what a colossal waste of film” this movie is (more than likely) going to be. Another Jonah Hex and Catwoman “quality” movie in the making.

Too bad. There was SO much potential in bringing an awesome Green Hornet to the big screen.

  8. Kevin T. Brown Says:

At least the car is cool looking. The rest? Not so much.

  9. Uncle Happy Says:

Here’s what I have read thus far: cliched knee-jerk responses that are always given out in response to any comic film or film based off an existing fantasy sci-fi property. Here’s an interesting idea, let’s try looking at the movie with fresh eyes and minds rather than act pretentious? I really wish the internet wasn’t so full of negativity regarding all things. Try dialing it down and being open to a new take on the subject matter that, quite honestly, isn’t half as bad as you keep saying it appears.

  10. Larry F Says:

Not too excited about the Green Hornet character…a little disappointed, this was my favorite show as a kid. The release date is my birthday…guess that’s a plus.

  11. Zeph Says:

I was iffy about this until I saw Cameron Diaz. She looks like Gollum’s older sister. The last thing I’d want to do is see her in 3D.

  12. Cameron Says:

Hmmm…Having not remembered much of the Green Hornet series I’d have to say this Green Hornet seems to be taking a more tongue-in-cheek approach to the character that I didn’t necessarily associate with Green Hornet. Not to say that’s a bad thing mind you but Seth Rogen just doesn’t have me sold as the action-hero type. At least from what I saw in this trailer. I really (and I mean REALLY) hope this doesnt turn out like The Spirit movie!

  13. Jorlee Says:

I think it look rather awesome.

And no I don’t care anything about the traditional GH character.

  14. Another Ian Says:

I also thought it looked pretty alright. Probably the most realistic depiction of what a Newspaper mogul’s son probably is actually like, especially in this day and age. The Green Hornet always seemed to be the face-man while Kato did all the real work anyways…so this works for me. Maybe a bit TOO much on the comedy side of things, but whatever.

  15. Ozymandas Says:

I don’t know much about the character, so I should have no problems seeing this film. Looks fun.

Anybody else notice the name of the hotel at the beginning of the trailer is upside-down?

  16. dlfurman Says:

I’m with Jeff and Tony Vaughn and I_Captain Blanco and TheCritic.

    OY!

  17. Chuck G Says:

I think the main thing to keep in mind is movie companies arent intrested in catering to 75 year old men who grew up listening to the Green Hornet radio show. They need to try and make a movie that kids and teens TODAY would want to go see so therefore some liberties need to be taken. If you cant be a little open minded and roll with the changing trends then go back to Pleasentville.

  18. DaVeO Says:

I’m cool with it. I guess Kato will give him some hand-to-hand training?

  19. madcat Says:

To whoever said “Wait to see the film before trashing it”…that’s the point….If the trailer doesn’t make me want to see the entire film, then I won’t see the film.

Meaning the trailer looks bad, odds are the movie is bad!

Can you name the last good movie that had a bad trailer?

  20. Bryan H Says:

I don’t know a thing about the Green Hornet, but this seems pretty entertaining to me.

  21. VaDad Says:

Putrid!!! The trailer was terrible and is probably better than the film. Somebody tell the producers that camp is dead. Seth Rogan sya in the trailer “I haven’t done anything good my entire life.” He still hasn’t!

  22. B.Zaro Says:

It will be way better than the Kevin Smith version would have been, and the Dynamite comic he’s writing is proof of that (It’s Awful so far.)

  23. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

I’m a bit confused – it looks like Black Beauty and the weaponry is already in place, yet they make it sound like he’s inventing the idea of the Green Hornet himself.

But I gotta say, it looks very impressive. And as soon as I heard “Let’s roll, Kato” I just spleee’d.

  24. mon-el Says:

seth rogen as the green hornet……..why bother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Philip A Moore Says:

movie looks cool but why does it need to be in 3D ? it seem unnessary.

  26. Chris Bechtloff Says:

    That looks terrible.

  27. Molnek Says:

I see two possibilities for this movie; either there are just some funny parts and then people will complain it’s not all funny or it will be all funny and people will complain they don’t take the character seriously.

  28. Cameron B Says:

It looks bad. And not just as an adaptation, but bad in general. Seth Rogen as a lead in any action movie, even a comedic, is a bad move. I don’t buy it. Because he’s not a straight man. He’s the goofy one. Costello to someone else’s Abbott. To see him do otherwise makes it feel very, very off.

I like Rogen, I do, and I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I saw a trailer. Now I have, and it’s crap. It seems like they’re trying to recreate Pineapple Express to a degree, and it comes off as very, very cheap. Just because Rogen and Gondry are teaming back up doesn’t mean they have to go back to their own well. I feel like I’ve already seen the movie.

  29. Andre Says:

Well, so much for my hopes in actually wanting 2 c this movie. Looks like garbage. I would’ve liked 2 c a green hornet movie based on kevin smith’s version. that seems more interesting…

  30. richardknownasdick Says:

I am excited about this film. As for all of the negativity…you all know that you pay for several movies every year that will be way worse than this film. Its an action/comedy…not the DARK NIGHT RETURNS. Enjoy the film for what it is, and do not “down” the movie for what it is not.

  31. Cameron B Says:

    @richardknownasdick

I didn’t expect it to be Dark Knight Returns, and that’s quite an assumption to make of people who are disappointed in what they see.

This is a movie that needed good casting and had the opportunity to be something fresh, as the current generation doesn’t really know what The Green Hornet is. However, what they seem to be getting is Gondry and and Rogen’s sequel to Pineapple Express.

It’s cool you’re excited about the movie, but don’t think everyone wants a dark and depressing, gritty movie. All I wanted was something that was not your usual Rogen movie, which i what this seems to be. He’s miscast, plain and simple.

  32. Mike C Says:

Well, at least Frank Miller is happy about this movie…it makes his Spirit film look like The Dark Knight in comparison…

  33. KB Says:

    HUGE PIECE OF CRAP!!

  34. Dan Says:

Honestly having seth rogen as the green hornet kinda killed this movie for me long before the release, cause you knew it was going to be a “Wacky Comedy!” angle, and frankly thats not what we want.

  35. richardknownasdick Says:

    @Cameron B

My comments were not directed at any one person, they were for all of the “doom and gloomers” out there who always criticize comic book related movies (before they see them). People are entitled to their opinions. For me, Being 39 years old, I can remember a time when seeing these type of movies were rare and I am always ready to take a wait and see stance about the quality of the film. I didn’t mean to imply that anyone wanted a “grim and gritty” Green Hornet movie; I was merely referring to the high quality of the DARK NIGHT RETURNS movie. Years ago no one thought that Blade or Iron-Man would be a good movie series, but they turned out pretty good. No the casting is not perfect nor is the apparent tone of the movie ideal…but we could be surprised if we give it a chance.

Also most people know of the Green Hornet only from the old 60′s Bat-Man TV show (very camp). How many people really read all of those old pulp stories or listened to the radio show? Not many I’m sure. Lighten up its only a #@&$#@ movie.

  36. BB Says:

Who would have come up with the idea to make The Green Hornet a dummy. Wow ! This could turn out bad. How lacking in vision to make a movie that people have been waiting for years and aim for the grave. just as bad to read comments from people who clearly haven’t a clue what the Hornet should be.

  37. DaVeO Says:

    @ richardknownasdick

    I agree with ya man.

  38. bigbandit Says:

I’m one of those people that can’t stand the negativity and cynicism that’s thrown at almost every news story that comes out on this site.

Well, this trailer is not at all encouraging. It really looks like theses guys just didn’t care about this project, and it looks like a joke. Kato’s cool, and so is some of the action, but it’s looking bad.

    I CRY FAIL!

  39. bigbandit Says:

So many directions to go in, and they come up with this thing that looks like a bunch of thrown together cliches.

    How about an approach that involves;
    - an homage to Bruce Lee, and making Kato seem as though he were played by a modern version of Bruce.
    - transporting many aspects of the ’60s aesthetic into our era and playing with that a bit, similar to what was done with the ‘Incredibles’.
    - translating that ‘pulp’ aesthetic and tone to the film

For a film that’s been in development for years, this trailer does not reflect that.

  40. Kolymar Says:

The action scenes look decent. Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet? Nope. They should have tried someone who could actually sell the heroic look and the action scenes. Someone like Mark Valley, for example. I’m ok with a comedic approach but this feels wrong. Another superhero movie failure.

  41. DonutFactory Says:

These guys will make millions of dollars. Here’s the simple math and this is not a troll post – I’m just putting an opinion out there.

1 Seth Rogen – Guy has an affinity for the source material – he just did Pineapple Express…which did ok (27 million budget was easily recouped in the opening weekend domestically)

2 Blend action and comedy – These movies appeal to a broader swath of the populace than your average run of the mill dark hero epic based on a classic character. That didn’t work with Lamont Cranston in 1994 (32 million gross over the entire run of the film! In 1994! With a 25 million budget!)

3 Hollywood is looking for what sells my young / old / out of touch friend. This feels like it will sell. More importantly it felt like it would sell to the suits who gave it the greenlight. Either watch it or don’t. I’ll likely have to wait for DVD as being a business owner and a new dad doesn’t leave a lot of free time but I – for one – think this looks pretty good.

  42. Charlesday Says:

Looks ok to me. I grew up watching the TV show and read the comics. And I always keep an open mind towards everything pop-culture, that’s how one enjoy entertainment. This looks like a popcorn-fun movie. Why are people always so negative? Learn to have fun guys!

  43. Charles Says:

When Batman’s Joker was cast, people cried that Heath wouldn’t be able to pull it off and there were “Brokeback Gotham” jokes all over the ‘net. A total unknown played the best Superman we’ve ever seen. People thought Blade would fail as a franchise.

The point is we’ve seen TWO minutes of a movie here and to attempt to judge the whole based on that is premature, especially with the comments that people think are oh so witty because it seems to be “cool” to use certain phrases and wordplay than it is to offer constructive criticism which some here that did not care for the trailer actually offered.

Saying someone is miscast assumes the Green Hornet on the screen is the same as the old series. This is a new Green Hornet for a new age, and maybe some people don’t like that, and that’s fine. But he may be perfect for THIS incarnation of it. Wesley Snipes is one of the worst actors out there and his delivery in Blade was campy and laughable at times, but it worked FOR THAT movie version of Blade.

Times like these I’m reminded of Ben Affleck in Jay and Silent Bob saying: “The Internet has given everybody in America a voice. For some reason, everybody decides to use that voice to bitch about movies…downloading scripts and what they think is inside information about movies and actors they claim to despise, yet can’t stop discussing.”

  44. Mike Says:

Okay, First let me say that I am happy that Green Hornet fans have their character on the big screen.

Disclaimer: I have no exposure to the character past the recent comic previews and I know of the TV show, but have never watched it.

What was going through my mind as I watched the trailer:

1.) Wow, how did they make Batman 3 without me hearing about it? Guess they’re calling this one “Batman and Seth, the Boy Wonder.”

2.) (In a deleted scene from “The 40-Year-Old Virgin) Paul Rudd: “Dude. You know how I know you’re gay? You’re in a movie where you’re the main character, but still play the dorky sidekick to your badass limo driver.”

3.) “We’ll pretend to be the bad guys, but we’re really good guys. Nobody’s done that before.” Yea. Sure. Apparently, this character has never heard of undercover cops.

4.) Wait. It’s in 3-D? What about that needs to be seen in 3-D?

Haven’t seen the movie, but it seems like a missed opportunity to me. Might also make a lot of money because it might be the best thing coming out in January. I personally may Redbox it.

  45. Cameron B Says:

Did somebody above say that Pineapple Express proves the Rogen has an affinity for the source material? How does one thing prove another? Pineapple Express, while an enjoyable and funny film, is no where near the source material for Green Hornet.

Green Hornet, while he and Kato did have an appearance on the 60′s Batman show, was not camp at all. In fact his show in the 60s was played very straight.

And none of this really changes the thing that Rogen is wrong for the part. Green Hornet is a hero that masquerades as a mafioso, Kato as his enforcer. But Hornet himself has to be intimidating. And that chinline he has is no intimidating at all. The gas gun gag doesn’t work with Rogen the same way the armor testing gag worked with Downey in Iron Man. With Downey it works because Tony Stark comes off as confident, he knows what he’s doing, he’s done experiments before, we’ve seen him make an amazing piece of tech out of scraps, and then the joke hit hard because he crashes into a car or something.

Rogen’s little gas gun joke doesn’t work for the movie or the character, because it makes him look like an idiot. We’re supposed to believe this guy is waging a war on crime, and we get “Oh goarsh, thems whacky!” moments.

To those who want to see it, more power to you. I respect that opinion, and honestly hope you have a good time. But at least understand why their is concern over Rogen and this movie in general.

  46. Alasseon Says:

The gas gun gag actually made me laugh out loud. Really! Seth Rogen was one of the best parts of The 40 Year Old Virgin and is a better actor than people expect. He’s obviously slimmed down for the role and is committed to the part, so let’s give him a chance. I never thought Robert Downey Jr. was the right choice for Iron Man either, until I saw the film. Heath Ledger for the Joker? I thought they could have made a better choice until we saw the film. While Rogen has some shoes to fill, the part of Kato will be the one that most people in the world will look at as the biggest challenge.

  47. Cameron B Says:

I think you’re missing the point. it’s funny for the wrong reasons, as it makes this character, who’s supposed to be believable as both a hero and mafioso, look the fool. And with Seth Rogen in the part, a guy traditionally known for playing the lovable loser type of character, he already has a HUGE hurdle to overcome, and gags like that don’t help him at all.

  48. Number 6 Says:

I can only hope that Seth Rogen can pull off a Michael Keaton, but this trailer tells me that they’ve gone for the funny. Forgive me, the camp! Because it sure isn’t funny. I used to be the type who didn’t like his kung-fu played for laughs and because of that I don’t own any Jackie Chan movies except the two or three that he played granite stone-faced serious.

It was only when I met Stephen Chow and his live Road Runner movie; Kung-fu Hustle that I realized and remembered that I grew up with Curly, Larry, Moe and Shemp. To quote the late Mr. Ledger, I had to ask myself of myself, “Why so serious?!” I LMAO and I didn’t mind his very broad comedy. I went back and added most of his library to my library and that’s good value for money truly well spent. So, I don’t mind the funny, but I do absolutely hate the camp! For my two bits camp has killed many a film. Remember the Ron Ely, Doc Savage, Man of Bronze film? Yikes! I’m going to give this film a pass until the 2-D DVD comes out, if then. As an aside, I don’t like the 3-D method and intend to give the process another go, just not with this movie.

Again, having said all of the above, I hope the film is as successful as the 1989 Batman film. Wait, who’s the villain of the piece? They’ll need a Jack Nicholson type of performance to help them I think, and not a Tommy Lee Jones doing a Jack Nicholson performance. Two-face indeed.

  49. mbeaule Says:

Seth Rogen? Give me a break. Fine for stoner films, not for heroes. This looks like a Jonah Hex type opening weekend. And why the push lately for the Green Hornet Character? What next? The Shadow?
Anyway… Another dud for Paramount Im afraid.

  50. Brian Says:

I agree with Charles and Alasseon….

Wait for the movie to come out, folks!
    Then make your decision…

I know some people that thought Jonah Hex would be much better than it was and it tanked!

Maybe this’ll have the opposite effect.

  51. somedude Says:

Well Obviously you guys are forgetting that this movie is about him becoming the Green Hornet. It Seems to me like he’s going to “Grow up” during the course of the movie, as in Grow into the identity of The Green Hornet.

The only thing good about the old TV show was Bruce Lee.

  52. Ian Says:

I liked the secret entrance to the Hornet’s Nest (or whatever they call it) going thorough not just bushes but also a car. That part actually seemed like Michelle Gondry.
