“I’m delighted to have signed exclusively to DC Comics. The work Pete, Matt, Wil and I are doing as a team on Action Comics has been tremendously satisfying, and I’m enjoying my other creative partnerships here just as much. I feel thoroughly cosseted! And hey, Lex Luthor! Who wouldn’t be psyched to get to play with name recognition like that?”
That’s how Paul Cornell announced his exclusive with DC Comics on DCU Blog The Source today. His exclusive is part of the swath of Superman related news hitting this week, as the Man of Steel’s writers, artists, and more talk about his significance on the DC house blog.
No word on the “other creative partnerships” but it’s safe to say the writer, who previously has written for Marvel Comics for the last 3 years or so, has some other big projects up his sleeve. He did tease that his star of Action Comics, Lex Luthor, will face-off against Deathstroke, Vandal Savage, the Secret Six, Gorilla Grodd, and of course, Larfleeze the Orange Lantern.

very disappointed Marvel let Cornell slip through their fingers…
June 22nd, 2010 at 3:48 pm
Good for DC! Paul is a great writer!
June 22nd, 2010 at 3:48 pm
As am I, guess that means no well written Captain Britain for the next few years. Such a huge disappointment.
June 22nd, 2010 at 3:50 pm
Good, if Marvel wasn’t going to throw any real work his way, then DC should be more than able to capitalize on him.
June 22nd, 2010 at 3:53 pm
Oh good, they’re adding a rampant sexist to their stable of already morally questionable and somehow exclusive writers. Um…hooray?
June 22nd, 2010 at 3:53 pm
We’ll see. I didn’t see him mention Superman as a character that he’d be writing and, gee, its only Action Comics. I don’t think I’m looking forward to his story in Action at all based on the preview.
June 22nd, 2010 at 3:54 pm
and based on how Lois was portrayed, I can only guess there will be either a lot of mischaracterization or a lobotomy involved.
June 22nd, 2010 at 3:54 pm
love Cornell as a writer. However, that won’t make me buy Action COmics

I echo Pariscub.
June 22nd, 2010 at 5:15 pm
cool may be they could let him do some stuff for vertigo
June 22nd, 2010 at 5:43 pm
Poor Cornell!
June 22nd, 2010 at 5:54 pm
I want a Superman-Dr Who crossover.
June 22nd, 2010 at 6:12 pm
How did Marvel let this one slip away??

“I want a Superman-Dr Who crossover.”
That is a great idea! With his grasp on Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Cornell is ideal for many D.C. characters. I would like to see Cornell write Aquaman, The Atom, Dr. Fate, and even JLA! I hate to say it but Cornell instead of Lemire for Atom.

Don’t follow Action myself, and I was hoping Marvel would give Captain Britain another go (as it’s done for Atlas), so this is sad news for me. Hope it works out well for you, Paul.
Kevin – I don’t understand the “rampant sexist” remark. Didn’t see that in Captain Britain – actually though Cornell’s female characters held their own with the males (in a good way). Could you please elaborate?
June 22nd, 2010 at 9:32 pm
Yeah…um, can we get Superman *back* in Action Comics? Soon?
June 23rd, 2010 at 1:27 am
Who cares i only read his Dark X-Men and a bit of the Captain Britain series but its not like his work was so great. The only Superman book i will try is the JMS written book his book i dont care about.

Paul, why don’t you ask Sean Mckeever on how great it is working for DC? After his DC exclusive runs out, he’ll be crawling back to Marvel.
June 23rd, 2010 at 6:42 am
Um, doesn’t McKeever already write for Marvel NOW with the Nomad backup stories in Captain America and the full issues of Young Allies?
June 23rd, 2010 at 7:09 am
Good god. This guy is a hack. Don;t believe me, read Goth Opera.
June 23rd, 2010 at 8:59 am
Charles I think Tim meant Cornell would be crawling back to Marvel.

Based on the more recent article on Cornell, this story is going to run for 10 issues, leading into Action 900. Now, I may be slow on the uptake but wouldn’t you want Superman to be in those 10 issues? Not some, what appears to be, horrid take on Luthor (and Lois) as he encounters other bad guys of the DCU? I understand that Superman will be walking across the USA for 12 issues of “Superman” following 700 but does that mean that he has to remain absent from Action? Couldn’t he bring Lois along to report for the Daily Planet? Or is that what Clark will be doing? Maybe for 900, we can have Beppo and Krypto take over the title for a while. Frankly, if this is what it appears to be, I’d be more than happy to drive Cornell back to Marvel so he doesn’t have to skin his knees.

@Charles: I was being sarcastic there, genius. As I recall Mckeever didn’t enjoy his exclusive at DC. I predict Cornell move to DC is going to be as short as Mckeever’s.

Dracula/Luthor vs. Superman..the gears are already churning
June 27th, 2010 at 11:46 am
@Tim, so you felt the need to be a dick to me because I asked a question. Nice. Dick.
