Heatvision has reported that Academy Award winner Nic Cage is in early talks to reprise his role as Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Plot details are still shrouded in secret, and it’s not clear if either Eva Mendes or Sam Elliot will return. There was a debate on whether or not the sequel would even star Cage at one point, and concentrate the feature on the second Ghost Rider, Dan Ketch.
Despite the lukewarm reviews and so-so reception from comic fans, it grossed over $230 million, which is nothing to sneeze at.
Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are in negotiations for directing the hellcycle for a ride this time around with Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul as producers and David Goyer and Mark Steven Johnson as executive producers.
So what can we look forward to see in Rider 2? Do you go the X-Men route and use the same villain again? Or perhaps something new, or perhaps something bold like an original creation? Seeing how the directing duo also wrote this Summer’s Jonah Hex major motion picture, I guess we’ll have to just wait and see.

This movie must go on coz I’m one of the fan in this movie. I hope they will find a way to continue it.
June 16th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
Honestly, if I had to choose, I think these are the guys to direct the Deadpool movie…
June 16th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
What a great idea…bring back one of the things that made the first one suck on a whole new level.
I’ve been a Ghost Rider fan and a comic book collector for 20 years. When I saw this movie in theaters (thank god it was a free viewing) I was embarrassed to be both a GR fan and a comic book collector.
The whole thing sucked and to make it worse Marvel changed the comics to reflect the utter stupidity of the movie.
Hell, I’m surprised the writers even got the names of the characters right, we all know that is the ONLY thing they got right.

I thought the first ‘Ghost Rider’ was fantastic. It didn’t take itself seriously at all and Cage was fantastic as the quirky strange star. I mean, a story about a guy with a skull for a head is NEVER going to work on screen as serious and dark. Never. Bring on the sequel.
June 16th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
All of these pot heads who keep saying: “Make Ghost Rider a horror movie!” are idiots. The movie would never earn top dollars if it was portrayed as a horror film. People keep touting Punisher: War Zone, and it was a piece of garbage. You can’t take movies like these and add too much seriousness and realism. It won’t work because these are fantasy characters.
I hope Cage returns, and they get some one like Mark Millar to write the script.
June 16th, 2010 at 3:46 pm
WTF..40 year old cage?OMG this makes me sick..Its not cage thats generating the revenues..its the Ghost rider name. Pick any under 30 year old dude out there PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE..i cant believe they would seriously consider getting 50 year old cage back.
Jessica you are an idiot.
June 16th, 2010 at 3:46 pm
i thought we all agreed that the first ghost rider film sucked?! why are they doing it again?
blaze needs to be younger, not 50. oh, and the movie needs to be cool.
June 16th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Fantastic? What are you — twelve?
Anyway, the reason why the first movie sucked — and the comic books suck and will always face cancellation — is because it’s not a true horror movie. It doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s not dark. And that’s the main damn problem.
The Ghost Rider is a DEMON. He should be violent — scary, dark, gory — not cracking puns and melting pavement every time he rides by on his tricycle. Establish him as an urban bogeyman/myth like Bigfoot or the Jersey Devil. Keep his dialog to a minimum — preferably, none at all. Ask Stephen King if you don’t believe me, the best monsters don’t talk.
Horror films are rated R, which is why the Ghost Rider comic should be a MAX book. The Blade flicks were all rated R, written by Goyer, and they did just dandy at the box office (although the third one sucked monkey balls).
Of course, no one at Marvel knows a damn thing about writing horror comics (they’re too busy making stories for eight-year-olds and turning everyone into Avengers), which is why when they produce them they suck.
I expect this sequel to do no less — especially with Cage.
June 16th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
GR is one o’ my fave characters and the first movie was “okay”. All I was hopin’ for were some cool scenes of GR and that’s what I got. (Pretty much ALL I got out of it, to tell the truth)
The only real problem I had with it was Nicholas Cage. The guy is an alright dude but he’s too old and the wig was pretty silly.
They really need to go with a new actor but if they don’t, hopefully it’s at least entertaining.
June 16th, 2010 at 4:54 pm
God, please don’t let this one come to pass – Blaze is supposed to be brooding, not goofy (like in the first film). Having Peter Fonda back would be nice, though…
June 16th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
Oh joy! This is exactly what the world needs now, to lift us out of our dark spirits. Can Cage sing or dance? Do you think they’ll do it as a musical? Maybe throw in a Power Pack cameo to set them up for some kind of Disney Channel series.
Avi Arad, if you’re reading this, you should definitely PM me! I’ve got lots of ideas!
June 16th, 2010 at 6:03 pm
Whatever! Ghost Rider was just the greatest movie ever! And with the people who did Jonah Hex on board it will be double awesome!
They will have creepy guys being creepy and explosions and an awesome soundtrack! What else do you need?
I want the villains to be The Orb, Big-Wheel and Madcap! Throw in a appearance from Dr.Strange (played by Johnathon Schaech) and that is a movie!
June 16th, 2010 at 6:07 pm
Michael Says:

Yeah, and we all know you can’t have a successful horror franchise star a supernatural being or anything.
We wouldn’t want another dud like Poltergeist or Nightmare On Elm Street, now would we?
June 16th, 2010 at 8:30 pm
I am a fan of Marvels darker characters, be they Marvel Knights, Midnight Sons, Legion of Monsters, whatever. These are why I love and read Marvel comics, not for lame traditional superhero rubbish with their absurd outfits.
So I was let down by how dissappointing the first Ghost Rider film was. But Ghost Rider COULD and SHOULD be an awesome film. It always astounds me that they managed to mess it up.
It should be a cross between Mad Max and the Crow, nothing less. He should be violent and dark, a definite horror character, as much as possible.
The other thing is Johnny Blaze is one cool guy. And though Nic Cage can play cool characters and is a cool guy/actor, he just didn’t feel like Johnny Blaze, or feel cool.
Only good thing about the first film was Ghost Rider himself, he looked like Ghost Rider, and did look awesome. You pretty much need to just watch it with the sound down and enjoy how awesome he looks and forget the story.

I would like to see them focus on Danny Ketch this time.
June 16th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
I liked the first movie just fine, and am down with GR2, Nic Cage and all. On the comics side I was way more of a fan of Dan Ketch than Blaze, so if they re-cast to do a Dan Ketch version, I’m cool with that too.
Or even do a Dare Devil/Ghost Rider double bill movie, that would kick some ass!
June 16th, 2010 at 9:38 pm
We must band together and form an impenetrable shield to protect our beloved comic characters from being endangered by the incapable hands of Mark Steven Johnson!!! Why did Marvel give him the 1st Ghost Rider flick to begin with after he took a steaming dump on Daredevil? The only reason this film stands a chance is because he’s not directing or writing it…but even that exec producer credit is dangerous. MSJ, there’s NO WAY you can look back with any sense of comic book film achievement on either film you’ve made. Go away. Please.
June 16th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
I liked the first GR movie, although I have my issues with it. First I can’t stand how they always force a love interest into every comic book movie and Mendez’s character was in no way interesting. Secondly, Sam Elliot is a good actor and his character was completely wasted in the film. Also the guy playing Blackheart was dull.
With that being said the movie did accomplish one thing, it appealed to non-comics fan. An audience that is much larger than all the fans who know anything enjoy the ghost rider comics. I know quite a few people that have either never read a comic, or haven’t read one since they were kids and they all loved Ghost Rider, even the women.
Granted Nick Cage and Sam Elliot are often a draw for the ladies, and the ladies are the reason that Hollywood insists on putting the annoying love interests in the films. The kids, who had never heard of Ghost Rider, now know who the character is and love the movie. They get their parents to buy the toys and the video games that feature the characters from the film. The guys that don’t read comics love the movie because it has a guy with a flaming head riding a demonic motorcycle up the side of a building and a semi-hot co-star.
Was the movie a brilliant adaption and did it stay true to the comic, no. However, the movie took a character that was completely unknown to non-comics fan, exposed him to a larger audience, and made $230 million dollars at the box office in the process. Thus leaving the character open for sequels, something that would never happen otherwise.
Could they have done better with the movie, definitely. But this wasn’t another Batman & Robin, X-3 or Catwoman, so I think we should all be thankful they did as good of a job with the character.
June 16th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
the last one failed because of the STUPID one-liners and dialogue. the effects were cool, the story wasnt ideal but it was serviceable, its just the bad dialogue. everyone sounded like they were 7th graders from the 80′s. if you had an adult write the script for adults, it would have a shot at not being something fans cringe at when mentioned in conversation.
not to mention, for a movie called ghost rider, there wasnt a whole lot of ghost rider. eva mendes as focused on more than skullhead.
and i know the fanboys cry out for legacy stuff like the original rider on his horse, but to the average viewer it makes no sense at all.
June 16th, 2010 at 11:25 pm
I just don’t get it. I REALLY liked the first one. I was extremely excited to hear Cage would be back for a sequel. I thought the addition of Phantom Rider was cool. I think Sam Elliot is one of the most charismatic actors we have (and a Perfect General Ross.) And I loved the tone the first one laid down.
The only thing I didn’t like was that they made up villains in those elemental demons, and the main villain (or the movie’s interpretation of him) was f***in’ lame. There are enough great horror villains that Marvel has, already established. Just, PLEASE, use one of them and stick to their continuity.
June 17th, 2010 at 1:41 am
Funny. I look at the pool of unlicensed (unused) characters in the Marvel pot and wonder what the urgency is to attempt a revival of a mediocre-at-best redo of this character. I think we need to let the bad taste of the last movie wear off a little before contemplating another Ghost Rider movie.
Invest the money on another character and start fresh.
Man, would I like to see someone try a Moon Knight movie, or Iron Fist, or even something with Nick Fury and SHIELD, or even a second go at Daredevil (with a more suitable cast).
June 17th, 2010 at 3:19 am
Ghost Rider was panned by the purists but it’s a fun and hugely entertaining film in it’s own right.
It never tried to pass itself off as anything other than it was, and Nic Cage is the man. I’d be way more p!$$ed if they made another GR flick without him now. I’ve had enough of this requel/reboot trend already (see Punisher)
If you disagree, all I can say is this;
“You’re stepping on Karen”
June 17th, 2010 at 3:21 am
And screw Danny Ketch. That was just MArvel cashing in on ‘The Crow’
June 17th, 2010 at 6:13 am
Ok, CRANK was a really stupid movie. The entire series of Jason Statham exeggerated POS is crap. Why them to direct GR? Why? How are these decisions made? “hmm, in Crank you had some crazy stunts. When he bounced after the helicopter fall, well, I want to see GR do that with his bike. Excellent, you’re hired!”
June 17th, 2010 at 7:08 am
I think this one needed a reboot. Hearing that Cage will be back in the lead role in no way encourages me to step up to the box office to see this film.
June 17th, 2010 at 11:40 am
The first movie was utterly forgettable. That’s mainly what I remember about it. I love Nic Cage, but he should pass the flaming head torch.
June 17th, 2010 at 11:45 am
I dont for the life of me know why everyone crapped on the first Ghost Rider movie. I liked it.
June 17th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
after that horrific first GR movie, I wouldn’t watch a sequal even if they paid me!!!
June 17th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
“Why did Marvel give him the 1st Ghost Rider flick to begin with after he took a steaming dump on Daredevil?”
Did Marvel have anything to do with that decision? I assume it was the studio which leased the rights from them who had all the power to make those choices. Marvel just gets a check, I’d guess. Those weren’t Marvel Studios releases.
Anyway, I hope this doesn’t happen simply because the first movie was terrible.
June 17th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
“Crank” was the worst piece of crap I have ever seen, if the writers of that film get involved then the “Ghost Rider” franchise is officially over for me
June 17th, 2010 at 7:09 pm
I’m in the “not great but decent camp”. My biggest beef is it would have been more effecive if Blaze had made a concious deal to “sign” the contract rather than having no real choice in the blood dropping on the contract. Then it would have been a more solid story of redemption.
But it had a nice look and there were some interesting moments (and let’s face it, not every Johnny Blaze comic has had stellar writing either) so I’ll give the sequel a watch if it happens.
June 18th, 2010 at 5:06 am
“Crank” was a thoroughly entertaining, over-the-top action film not intended to be taken completely seriously. Clearly that’s what they’re intending to do for the second “Ghost Rider.” And it makes complete sense. How do you take a film where the lead character is a leather-clad biker with a flaming skull for a head completely seriously? I thought the first film had it right by trying to inject a little humor into it.
June 19th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
I loved it!!!!
It was fun and didn’t take it self too seriously. The problem with the first one was the crap villains. Need some badass villains (Lilith’s kids anybody?), classic 70′-80′s soundtrack and maybe Eva Mendes showing some skin.
Please bring back Sam Eliot’s character back as the other Ghost Rider!!!!
June 21st, 2010 at 7:05 pm
There was things to like about the first Ghost Rider movie and things to loathe about it. I will admit up front that I am not a big Ghost Rider fan, so I only went to the theater to see it to support a comics-to-film movie. I had an enjoyable time at the movie which I think is largely due to the fact that I am not a big follower of the character in the comics. If I were, I would probably have not liked it. I didn’t mind Cage being in the movie. I generally like his quirky character pieces. I liked Peter Fonda as the Devil. I think there is some unwritten law that if a motorcycle plays a prominent piece in a movie, he has to be in it. I am glad that they are considering a sequel, just due to the fact that I like watching comic based movies.
July 6th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
I thought the first one was cool. I am ready for the sequel…and Nic Cage is still the man! lol
