Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle Coming to the Small Screen?

I think this is just good timing as I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about how cool this would be as a show, and lo and behold, DCE is going to try it.

A few hours ago, CCO of DCE Geoff Johns had tweeted about a live-action Blue Beetle show featuring Jaime Reyes. “We have a live-action test of Jaime Reyes’ scarab activating his suit. It. Is. Awesome.” Johns went on to state, “Blue Beetle’s going to appear in most of the Brave and the Bold’s this year and we’re hoping to develop a live-action show. Fingers crossed!”

Honestly, I would love to see this show. Newsarama mentioned earlier that Cartoon Network has expressed on branching off into more live-action programming, and I think this would be a great addition to a Friday night line-up of sorts.

So, Rama readers, would you be interested in a Blue Beetle series?

I’ve been a fan of everyone named Blue Beetle. To the point that I hunted down some of the old 1940s Blue Beetle radio shows. So yea, as long as it’s not a craptacular mess, I’d love to see some Blue Beetle on TV.

Maybe even get Wil Wheaton to play Ted Kord in an occasional flashback episode, guys? Please?

  2. Sebastian Says:

    Wrong Beetle.

  3. SpaceButler Says:

Awesome. Perfect choice for a character: great conflict, fantastic power set, and an awesome supporting cast. I would totally watch this.

  4. Bytowner Says:

Wheaton would be old enough to play Ted Kord at this point, wouldn’t he?

If this TV push pays off, that might explain the dropping of the backup from Booster Gold…as preparation for a new solo comics series for Jaime. I’d buy it, depending on the talent involved. Rogers coming back, or maybe Sturges again, to the keyboard for example?

  5. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

Right now I’ll bet there’s no plans for a new Beetle book, if only because they’ve no idea what the tone of the assorted TV projects will be, or indeed if they happen at all. Hes appearing in Teen Titans (with other “more successful outside of comics” character Static) and is now in JLI Generation Lost, and that’s likely enough for now.

  6. Bytowner Says:

Appearing in two titles regularly right now? In addition to the TV stuff?

Yeah. Rebuilding the fan base to make the solo book viable. Definitely the plan.

  7. Ricardo Says:

I think he would be more suitable for cartoon. I think live action will suck, but hey, it’s Blue Beetle and whatever makes him more popular is fine with me.

  8. Henry Says:

I would think that an animated series would go over better then a live action one when talking about Blue Beetle, but I guess it’s all about who’s their target audience with the show.

  9. Lemurion Says:

My first thought was animated too – but judging by the timing they may be wanting to do something to replace Smallville, and Jaime would be perfect for another live-action coming-of-age type series.

  10. Dreadful_Rauw Says:

I think it could be done well, as long as they keep the supporting cast from the comic. Jamie’s family dynamic is really the unique thing he brings to the superhero table, so I hope they don’t scrub that the way they did in “Brave and the Bold”.

And if they’re not getting John Rogers to write a few episodes, they’re damn fools.

  11. Brian Says:

I would definitely check it out! It was sad that Blue Beetle lost his book. The supporting cast will probably make or break the show so here’s hoping for good writing.

  12. Matthew E Says:

    I’d watch it.

  13. Kat Kan Says:

I love Jaime Reyes, and I really love his mother (I want to be as tough and wonderful as she is), as well as the rest of his family and his friends. I’d watch, whether it’s live action or animated.

  14. Kev Says:

While I love the idea of Jaime getting his own show, I can’t help but think it’ll be bad, just can’t see them having the budget to make the effects look anything but cheesy.

Sixteen years of Power Rangers series says otherwise.

Seems like sellers of these things simply have another model for generating revenue. To this end, I’ll look for other, less expensive, marketing tools. Thanks for this hard research.
