Again, another week, another shit “So Super Duper” comic. Sigh.

  2. Brian Andersen Says:

Again, another week, another ‘oh-so-nice-and-super-sweet’ comment! *sigh*

What is it about this strip that compels you to submit such a rude, d-baggy remark? It’s not to your taste? I get that. You’re welcome to your opinion.

But to express it in such a horrible a way, well, it just says a lot about you as a person. Which is sad, really. I’m sorry you hate my comic. And I’m sorry you feel the need to be such a jerk.

    Love and kisses!
    Brian

    Ignore the haters.

    What’s “a unless hero”…?

And, is this a print comic that you are posting one page at a time, or strictly a webcomic?

  4. Brian Andersen Says:

    Hi Chuck!
It’s “unless fool” actually and it’s just a stupid non-word I made up. Its like a close relative to “useless”.

And yes, So Super Duper is a print comic that I’m posting one page at a time. It’s currently on issue 7 of the print comic. I’ve justed completed issue 10 in print. :)

    Thanks for reading!
    Kisses!
    Brian

SWEET! I didn’t realize these were here on Newsarama! I LOVE this book!!! :)

  6. Anonymous Says:

    Brian,
is the irony of you rebuffing “rude d baggy remarks” about your strip in one breath, then having to correct hilarious spelling issues like “unless tool” in the next, completely lost on you? or is there some part of you that sees how that could be an amateurish mistake that actually earns a d baggy response.

  7. Brian Andersen Says:

    Hiya Anonymous,
First let me say how brave you are to hide behind your screen name! Awesome! Second, why is that ironic? Do you know what that word means? I never ever once claimed to be anything but an amateur cartoonist, indie comic creator, and someone on the fringes.

But by your logic, because I made a stupid boo boo, I deserve to have people say awful, purposely horrible things? Geez, what kind of house did you grow up in?

I’m human, I made a dumb mistake and I make mistakes everyday of my life, not just in my comics. I don’t believe that means people have the right to say terrible things about me or my work. In fact, even non-amateurish comics occasionally have mistakes in them. Ever hear of that big time DC editor who spelled Superman’s hometown on the cover of a Superman comic? Does that mean he deserves dbagggy comments?

If the d-bagger wanted to call me out for my spelling error, than fine. Have at it! But to call out the entire strip as shit? Well that’s just the workings of a jerk. Period. (As is the screen name SuperDuperFAIL. Someone hates me that much they took the time to create a whole new screen name for it? Crazy!)

If you don’t like something, guess what? Don’t read it. It’s a very simple concept. There’s tons of amazing articles and webcomics and reviews on Newsarama. If you find my work lacking then skip on past it and enjoy any of the many other terrific items on this site.

Best of luck to you and I hope you learn to embrace your own flaws (assuming have any) and relax a bit. Spewing hatred and horribleness only reflects badly on you.
    Hugs!
    Brian

    Hey Brian

Don’t know if you remember but a while ago now (might even have been nearly a year!) I left a troll comment about this comic. When I looked at it the next day I realised that it was totally childish and made me look like an asshole. So I retracted it but I still said I had some various problems with the comic. There was a bit of a discussion about it all and homophobia and stuff.

Anyway, Newsarama is on my Reader so I still saw So Super Duper every week. But in the back of my mind was that conversation. And you know what? You’ve slowly won me over. I admit, I didn’t get it at first and I still wouldn’t say So Super Duper is my favourite comic ever but I have actually come to look forward to the updates. It’s an enjoyable read and I do want to see how Psyche’s story unfolds.

I thought you might want to know, what with the haters and all. :)

  9. JenniferRuth Says:

I found the old comment thread I was referring too! (because yeah, it WAS over a year ago)

  10. Brian Andersen Says:

Wow! Jennifer! Well I must thank you for not only being brave enough to post your name here for all to see but to write such a nice and throughly sweet message. It’s people like you who make what I strive to do all worth it. You’ve made my whole month! :)
    So thank you!
    Brian

  11. Anonymous Says:

    Brian,
“ever hear of that big time DC editor who spelled Superman’s hometown on the cover of a Superman comic? Does that mean he deserves D baggy comments?”.
YES, he DOES deserve criticism! He deserves to be shamed for the mistake!

“because I made a stupid boo boo, I deserve to have people saw awful, purposely horrible things?”
I think you’re going a bit far here. All I saw was someone say your strip is shit. If that’s what you consider oh so awful and so horrible, then I genuinely feel sorry for you because it’s the tippy top of the iceberg in terms of what people could say in the future.

Finally, I want to clarify why I even bother to comment if I don’t like your strip. The reason is that with a mistake like “unless fools”, you’re essentially saying to your readers that you didn’t care to take the time to read over your dialogue more than once. Obviously I could be wrong, but that type of mistake seems simple enough that if you had even bothered to do a simple once over you could have fixed it. You get a LOT of free publicity by being posted here, and I find it annoying that while there are plenty of other amateur web strip creators out there who would kill to be in your position, you don’t seem to care enough to put in the effort to catch simple errors like this one.

I wish all the best to you and don’t want to discourage you in your work. However, as someone who hopes for the best quality in posts on this blog, I am disappointed that newsarama consistently pushes this strip onnita readership.

  12. Brian Andersen Says:

    Hey Anonymous,
Wow, so he deserves to be “shamed for his mistake” huh? Ugh, how horrible. Do you plan on bringing some stones with you to make sure he feels really ashamed? Sad, sad, sad.

And it’s all relative, really, on what someone considers awful and horrible. I guess when you put your time and energy into something and put it out there for all the world to see, well, having it called shit seems pretty awful and horrible to me. Maybe if they added “donkey” in front of shit that might make it only slightly more awful and horrible. But that’s my opinion.

And I of course care about my mistake. How in the world would I, and could I, not? But it’s out there now and I don’t want to pull it out and replace it now that it’s been posted. Am I embarassed by it? Oh course! But I’m not gonna hide it and run away from it.

And I do read over my work, generally 20 times or more before I publish it, but just because I don’t catch something that doesn’t mean I don’t care. That’s why most writers have editors, to help them catch these mistakes, because as a writer it’s just too hard to see your errors, because in your mind you’re reading what you’re thinking when you write. I don’t have an editor, which goes along with that whole “indie creator” thing. Does that make it ok? Of course not. I should catch my mistakes, more so before they’re ever published. But you know what? I made a mistake.

Some people are good at catching their errors, some people, like myself suck at it. And to me, I kinda like “unless fool” now. It’d taken on a whole new meaning for me. And perhaps I’ll use it again, but this time on purpose.

And it’s funny how you wish me all the best. You have a strange and creepy way of doing that. Keep on trucking Anonymous!
    Take care!
    Brian

  13. Anonymous Says:

Yeah, because criticism for a mistake is the same thing as stoning a human being to death. You have a problem with honest criticism that you need to get over. When you make a mistake, especially in a high profile position (like on Superman), yes, you deserve to be called out for it. It’s time to grow up Brian, it’s a little childish to equate anything I said with the act of brutally murdering someone by bludgeoning them with rocks.

  14. Brian Andersen Says:

Hee hee. Touched a nerve have I? Oh dear. I think I’ve more than proven I’m down with some honest critcism. But hating on someone or something, calling stuff shit, and telling someone they deserve to be shamed for a mistake isn’t honest criticism. It’s petty, rude, and sad. Maybe point that “grow up” comment right back at your “anonymous” self. At least I’m man enough to accept my mistakes and put my real, true, honest name out there for all to see. What’s your excuse?!
    Best of luck to you!
    Brian

  15. Anonymous Says:

My name is SETH JACOB, does that make any difference to you at all? And I never called your work shit or treated you rudely in any way, you however haven’t responded in the kindest manner to advice that you could actually benefit from. You only compared what I said, that mistakes deserve criticism, to executing someone with rocks. Well, at least you can’t keep hiding your mistakes behind a lame “oh you’re anonymous” excuse.

  16. Brian Andersen Says:

    Haha. Hi “Seth.”
I never said a stoning had to equal death. How many stones are you planning on using? Sheeh!

To me your insertion that someone deserves to be “shamed” sounds like classic ancient-times speak. Hench the stone throwing comparision. I don’t think anyone deserves to be “shamed” for a mistake. Guess what, they happen.

Your supposed “advice” wasn’t advice at all. It was you telling me that I deserve rude comments, that I ‘earn them’, because I made a mistake. Where’s the advice there? You say that’s not treating me rudely? Uh, yeah, it is.

This “advice” is supposed to benefit me? How? Shamming me benefits me? Siding with someone whose screen name is “SuperDuperFAIL” is benefiting me? Telling me that I don’t care and I don’t proof read my book is benefiting me? Where’s this supposed advice?

I never said I didn’t deserve to be called out for my mispelled word, in fact if you re-read above I say that if you feel the need you should call me out on it, but that’s not what has happened.

I’m sorry that you can’t seem to back up your rude comments without coming off all angry. In this fabulous exchange I’ve never once said anything unkind, I’ve just disagreed with you. If that’s unkind, well, then you might need to look up that word as well as how to use the word “ironic!”
    Have a terrific day!

  17. Anonymous Says:

I’m done with this pointless argument “Brian”, just want to point out the first line of the wikipedia page on stoning for you: “Stoning, or lapidation, refers to a form of capital punishment whereby an organized group throws stones at an individual until the person dies”. I understand the word ironic, apparently you’re the one with a vocabulary misunderstanding. Good luck over reacting to honest criticism in the future.

  18. Brian Andersen Says:

Alrightee, Mr. Seth! Thanks for the “honest” non-criticism. Peace be with you!

  19. ChaseChaseBaby Says:

I think anyone who takes someone having fun and doing what they love, takes one tiny nitpicky mistake, and tells them they “DESERVE TO BE SHAMED FOR THE MISTAKE” is a complete low-life loser who needs to get the hell out of the house once in a while.

Comics COULD be fun if people like “SETH JACOB” would just give up their bizarre, overly-serious usage of critiquing every little thing about every little thing as a substitute power outlet for the very little bit of usefulness they have in the real world.

in other words: GET A LIFE, YOU DUFUS.

  20. TonyJazz Says:

Rough discussion, eh? On the ‘net, one of the most commonly used words is ‘idiot’—and that is typical of the level of discussion in most places.

But inquiring minds want to know: how many issues do you have planned. Is there a grand conclusion coming soon?

(and THANKS for your excellent, hard work)

  21. Anonymous Says:

For the record, I never told Brian he deserved to be shamed for his mistake. I said the Superman editor who supposedly overlooked the mispelling of Smallville on a cover deserved to be shamed for the error. It’s like if on the cover of Amazing Spiderman, someone let slip “will Petre Parker ever get out of this one?”. I mean, it’s a hilariously stupid error. Of course that person deserves to be mocked for making the mistake, what do you suggest we do instead, reward careless errors? Coddle a professional editor, say hey it’s ok, you’ll get it next time buddy?
