So remember the last time we saw a glimpse of Thor’s costume? It was so thunderous, it even dropped Mjolnir on the Blog’s server! Well, ‘Rama readers, it’s time for what may be a full glimpse of the concept art — so let’s make some noise!
Collider has posted what they are saying is some exclusive concept art for the upcoming Thor film. While the jury’s still out as to whether or not this is confirmed by the brass at Marvel, what particularly interests me about the alleged costume is that it isn’t just Olivier Coipel’s design, like we all thought — it feels like a mesh between that and Bryan Hitch’s Ultimate’s style uniform, with the armor-looking chestpiece as opposed to Coipel’s leather tunic. Combine that with Iron Man and the recently-released Captain America concept costume, and I think we have ourselves some Avengers. What say you, Rama readers? Dig the hybrid costume? Think it’s more drizzle than thunder? Sound off!

June 3rd, 2010 at 8:54 am
Where is the helmet?
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:05 am
Lose the cape.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:05 am
I’d like to see a little more contrast between the pants and the boots. I think it’s awesome from the waist up, but the composition of the bottoms remind me too much of Magneto or something.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:12 am
looks sweet!!!!
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:13 am
I like this a lot. It seems a mix of a touch of Ultimate Thor with more of Olivier Coipel’s current design in the regular Marvel U. Hemsworth makes for an awesome Thunderer.
I’d rather see the flaps in front from his waist a little longer and the leggings like the arms, as well as the knee guards at the top of his boots flared out a bit more…still I’ll take it. Looks cool! It seems as it’ll look great in action. I also dig the length of the heft of Mjolnir…seems as though he could grip it mightily with two handed thunder power!!!
And as for those wondering if he’ll wear a winged helmet. I’ve read various interviews already and some of them have mentioned that Thor will indeed have the famous winged helm!
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:16 am
Haha. It looks like a yuppie officinist with cape. No helmet, no norse god look…
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:18 am
That is not good.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:19 am
Pump the guy with some ‘roids and bulk him up before they start shooting…
Seriously, I love this shot, everything is right on point for me. Don’t mind the cape, just think it should be a less saturated red and more of a burgundy color.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:21 am
I agree that the top half looks good but it is like they gave up being creative when they got to the pants.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:23 am
I agree with Rev. From the waist up, it’s looking good (though I’m hoping they figure out something with the helmet). But from the waist down, it needs alot of work. Perhaps the “loincloth” piece of cloth hanging from the belt would help to better connect the upper and lower halves (like the comic book version). However, don’t put the “thermal underwear” chainmail over the legs. I’ll take the “Harley riding pants” any day over that unfortunate upgrade of the comic book costume.
Speaking of costume, that might be what bugs me the most about the concept above. It looks more “costumey” than it does the armor worn by an ancient Norse god. Not saying he needs lots of leather and animal fur, but this version is just a bit too downplayed and subtle for my tastes. Plus…what’s with the treads on the boots? Does a god of thunder really need better traction on slippery surfaces?
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:27 am
I agree with the poster who said that it looks pretty good from the waist up, and pretty bland below that. Also, the cape might look better if it were a little darker.
Chris has the right look, though I hope he wears a “winged helmet” for at least part of the movie.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:32 am
I agree with Rev OJ. I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the pic. Awesome suit (needs his helmet though) but there is something off with the pants.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:34 am
Seems to me that this really does resemble early promo art. I’ll expect to see something very like this on a Burger King cup in the near future.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:36 am
It makes me wonder what kind of story it will be and how he’ll come by the costume. It looks a little too modern to be a Norse god. Maybe it’d work for the Avengers but I don’t know about an origin movie.
June 3rd, 2010 at 10:06 am
Bah. This looks too modern for a Norse god’s outfit. I dunno…Ultimate Thor’s costume worked because it went along with not knowing whether he really was Thor or not. This looks like he is ready to hit up the X-Games for some kind of X-treme sports type activity…or go wrestle the Undertaker or something.
Natural fibers, leather, chain/platemail…or materials that look like those. Phone up WETA in New Zealand and they’ll tell you how to outfit a Norse God.
June 3rd, 2010 at 10:15 am
Can the man get a Rune belt or something?
June 3rd, 2010 at 10:16 am
Aw come on! Where’s his stinkin’ helmet!?
June 3rd, 2010 at 10:20 am
You know what is wrong with the bottom? It looks too “superhero”.
June 3rd, 2010 at 10:25 am
Actually that doesn’t look that bad. Maybe lose the scruffy beard and stringy hair but everything else looks pretty good.
June 3rd, 2010 at 10:36 am
looks good. Its concept art without the helmet no doubt. Its Marvels norse god so it should have a superhero look to it. looking forward to more pics from the movie, but not too many, tired of spoilers creepin up for these movies.
June 3rd, 2010 at 10:48 am
USE THE SAME COSTUME VERSION IN MARVEL UNIVERSE! SHAVE THE BEARD! USE THE HELMET! NUFF SAID!!
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:01 am
I agree with the rest – waist up is awesome. Waist down though – it’s a little off. bland. looks like formal wear, his regal dress attire. I honestly can’t imagine him wearing his helmet with that suit and having it look appropriate – and yes – Thor needs his helmet. Hopefully this isn’t the final costume. I’d like to see something more formidable for his legs/boots – and his helmet.
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:08 am
I think this Fantastic! I’m really surprised at the negative and borderline negative feedback. I think this costume is brilliant.
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:09 am
This is a perfect example as to why every comic book character should not be featured in a live action movie. The costume looks bad and the actor does not look physically imposing enough to be Thor. I really wish the trend would run its course and let comic books be comic books. The number of sub-par live action movies inspired by comic books far outweighs the number of quality productions.
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:48 am
Does not look anything like the way NOrse gods have ever been depicted. Fail.
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:49 am
Hate to break it to you guys, but Kirby wasn’t exactly sticking to norse mythology when he created the original Thor costume. In fact, verimg away form traditionis what made the character. The Asgardians of Marvel were always best when they were more inspired by Kirby’s postmodern cosmicism, that’s where Thor’s roots really lie, more than in the mail-and bear skin tradition of the viking sagas.
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:49 am
I think the costume is pretty good overall but I do hope though that Thor has his trademark helmet at some point.
Remember, this could be his costume once he joins the Avengers, not his Asgardian outfit.
Even if it is, so long as the story is good and the acting is good, I can look past the whole ‘it looks too modern’ thing. Maybe they are staying away from the LOTR look precisely so they don’t get accused of just ‘copying’ LOTR b/c you KNOW the critics and fans would do that.
Not only that, this is just CONCEPT ART. How it actually looks on screen, could be quite different- for better or worse.
@ Jason:
No direspect, but while yes, there have been a lot of less than stellar live action films based on comics, the number of sub-par movies of ANY genre outweigh the good ones. If we follow that logic, we should not make ANY movies!
Marvel (IMHO) has a pretty good track record with their movies so far and there is no way to tell if this is going to be a sub-par movie. They have some quality actors, a great director…To me, it has more plusses than minusses at this point.
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:54 am
Wow, I love it. Thor’s supposed to be arrogant in the movie, isn’t he? This looks like he’s getting ready to hit the Asgard club scene. Apparently, the middle ground between “Warrior” and “God” is “Douche”.
June 3rd, 2010 at 12:02 pm
Hemsworth as Mr.Deity is just fine, he can act and has the look—no probs there..But this costume HAS to be used for the final Avengers movie in 2012 and not the actual Thor picture. It is absolutely wrong NOT to have the ancient, nitty-gritty-a-thousand-battle-worn Norse God look (ofcourse utilising-the classic constours of the original Thor costume for contimuity’s sake)…I really would doubt a demi-god would crash down on Earth looking like that. This costume would sort of be more acceptable as a mandate issued by Nick Fury to look the Avengers part now that one’s a part of a team.
June 3rd, 2010 at 12:05 pm
Eek.
So by the look presented, I’m assuming Poison and Whitesnake will be prominently featured on the soundtrack…
June 3rd, 2010 at 12:12 pm
Come on there is not a damn thing wrong this suit. He looks like Thor. End of story. The helmet might just look kinda silly really. Im digging this look.Really.
June 3rd, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Don’t like it much, but sometimes when U see it on screen its better. I really tought it would look like Thor’s current comic costume
June 3rd, 2010 at 1:53 pm
I like it! I don’t know what difference it would make if the helmet was added, but so far, it’s left a good impression on me.
June 3rd, 2010 at 2:13 pm
IMO, from the waist up, it’s ok. But from the waist down, it needs improvement.
The costume is too modern and he looks kinda like a rocker. Imagine him holding an electric guitar instead of a hammer. lol
He doesn’t look godlike; maybe because of the costume form the waist down — is too plain looking. The costume needs the “skirt” thing, improve the boots, and give him a helmet or something to make him look more different. To make him more godlike.
He’s supposed to be a god, so it should be OK if he looks “different” and not too plain looking.
June 3rd, 2010 at 2:15 pm
Seriously? Are you guys off your sodding mind? IT’S A COMIC BOOK MOVIE!!! You complained when the “X-Men” were taken and put into leather garments, now you complain because it looks TOO much like the comic book and not enough Norse God? Seriously? Some of the comments here are just inane fanboy nitpicking. Get. A. Life.
I think it looks GREAT for CONCEPT ART. I’m perfectly fine with the choice of attire. It has to be flexible and mobile. Everyone complained when Batman’s neck couldn’t move during the Burton-Schumacher era and how it was too rubbery… shut up. Stop it. I do agree one ONE thing however… the inside needs to be darker.. like another reader said: Burgundy
Marvel is REALLY trying to appease you guys and you’re actually comparing it to true Norse God look than the Marvel interpretation…. umm… what? And another thing, who’s to say that’s not just his costume after he descends from Asgard? You know NOTHING about the story yet and you’re judging it WAAAAAAAAAAYYYY in advance. Anyone remember the Heath Ledger debacle a couple years ago? I do. STOP judging films before they come out. Calling them “mediocre” from the door only makes you a bitter person for NO reason.
I’m not even a “Marvel Zombie” or anything like that. [A DC tried and true.] But damn, give it some slack right now. You people are what give fanboys bad names. Thanks for all the negativity. I for one think it looks great. Can’t wait to see it in action. The helmet will definitely be the icing on the cake when it hits. This is only the beginning of what I’m hoping of good things to come. “AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!”
June 3rd, 2010 at 2:45 pm
Not bad. Certainly better than the “What’s in YOUR wallet??” outfit worn by the TV version of Thor from years ago. I think it looks a little too slick, maybe, sort of like Thor is going to Iron Man and Captain America’s tailor … which he pretty much is, of course.
June 3rd, 2010 at 3:13 pm
I agree with lose the beard and keep the helmet….but over-all, I ain’t feeling it.
June 3rd, 2010 at 3:15 pm
I’m thinking they have one concept artist doing all the costumes because they are all getting the same feel. Which would be OK if all the heroes were recruited and put into costumes but Cap, Thor and Iron Man are all coming from different origins, eras and what would you call it for Thor..different reality? They should look anything alike.
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:03 pm
If you didn’t tell me that is THOR concept art, I wouldn’t have immediately picked up on it. I see just a guy with a battlesuit and Hammer, I don’t see an Norse Viking God.
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:18 pm
@Rated_R(ob)KO
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU… and so on…
I’ve gotten waaay sick of the inane fanboy negativity. Whining, complaining, nitpicking, bitching, crying, emoting, arguing over stupid shit. I LOVE comics and cringe every time my non-comics friends tell me about their experiences with these noisey fanboys.
Several years ago, the ‘outside’ world wouldn’t even breathe in the direction of comics properties, much less attempt to make a movie. Now, there’s a comics movie around every other proverbial corner that even I can’t keep-up.
I see all this and think to myself, ‘man this is such a great time for comics, better than every other era in the industry! Creators from almost every aspect of life are providing all kinds of high quality projects!’ Then I get on here, or some other website and any reasonable discussion is drowned by knee-jerk cynicism!
I heard a young college kid say that older fans ruin the comics experience for him and many others. NO WAY man. Look at me; 38yrs old and I’m behind all the progress I see, championing these old and new creators to keep pushing hard!!
YES we do need to offer ongoing critique, and analysis, but Jezus Chrysler people, too many of you take your tragically-hip cynicism way too far.
Great things are happening. I’ll be damned if I let it all pass me by because of my desperate need to be cynical.
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:22 pm
Top looks too high-tech. Otherwise, good start.
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:46 pm
Needs a helmet the beards fine Though I am bias because I have seen him in the comics if I saw him on the street I’d be like what up its thor.
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:57 pm
@bigbandit—
Thank you for the kind words sir. I am almost 10 years your younger and obviously we are on the same wave length with all of the amazing times ahead for us nerds. It’s a shame people can’t stop complaining long enough to know any better.
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:59 pm
Where is the strap on Mjornir? Its design *strikes me* (hahaha) as completely impractical.
And are we never going to see a winged helmet? (First Cap, now this–I think we’re dealing with a vast no-wing conspiracy!)
June 3rd, 2010 at 5:13 pm
No Way!! this doesn’t look like the pic that was released before. I’m just going to assume this might’ve been an early draft design rather than a total forgery
This in no way hearkens back to the original God of Thunder from the comics. And before you anti-fanboys rag on me about negativity and blaablaawhatever, I don’t have issues with updating a suit for a movie, but at least it should stay somewhat close to what the character is about. So far movie costumes have done that just fine, but this? It doesn’t give off the feeling that Thor just stepped out of time and appeared in the modern world. Remove the cape and the undershirt/chain mail, and you’d have the movie version of Ultimate Thor, not a Thor based on the 616.
Does it look like Thor? yeah it does. Could I or anyone with a passing knowledge of the character recognize him? I guess so, but that’s not enough. All the right colors in the right places apparently don’t make a costume right, or true to the character
June 3rd, 2010 at 5:27 pm
From the waist down, its a mess. Black Leather pants and the kneepads make it look futuristic like something out of the bondage gear worn by the X-Men. I think the upper half works but we need to see a helmet(all the time) when Thor is around. Also, whats up with the red in the gloves? I am surprised Marvel didn’t specify a direct take on the recent Thor costume by Olivier Coipel with all the chainmail and the helmet and the wings on the helmet. That works the best.
June 3rd, 2010 at 5:55 pm
Coipel’s update really does work well. Thor just looks more formidable with that look.
I still totally dig this outfit, and hope the actor bulks-up up before they start shooting, though I won’t complain if he doesn’t.
@Woofus The strap is there. It’s blended into the shadows of the cape’s crease. I know this ’cause I missed it the first time.
June 3rd, 2010 at 6:22 pm
No helmet no Thor.
I’m sorry Marvel Entertainment execs. but the helmet is part of what makes Thor what he is.
June 3rd, 2010 at 6:24 pm
Agree with other comments, bottom half sucks.
June 3rd, 2010 at 6:43 pm
Fail.
June 3rd, 2010 at 7:08 pm
Lame. Sorry. This is what I feared from a Thor movie. Works in the world of a comic book, but just looks silly and cheap on screen.
June 3rd, 2010 at 7:10 pm
It should be far less plastic looking. Why wouldn’t they go with something that looks more legitimately period to the Viking era?
June 3rd, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Hmmm. Where did this come from? Maybe some of you will like this one.
http://fanartexhibit.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/thor.jpg
June 3rd, 2010 at 7:39 pm
Needs more chain mail on the lower half — something perhaps similar to the ‘drape’ hawkeye uses in his costume to cover more of this guy’s thighs. This guy’s legs are too skinny. Black pants just makes his legs look skinnier. He needs the look of thunder thighs to pull off Thor. Silver chainmail or scales (like his arms) will make his legs look bigger and clunkier. This guy’s supposed to be a god, right? Make him look like one.
June 4th, 2010 at 2:50 am
I like the design– but after reading a few of the comments, I’m inclined to agree that this is not what I would want to see in a Thor origin film. The actor playing Thor should be a big imposing Nordic type (imho) not just blonde…
I think my favorite Thor was the Walt Simonson armoured version from the late eighties.
As for the cape… it doesn’t really make sense that he would need one in a combat situation or to keep warm. I’m open to the possibility that they could create some justification as to why he’d need a cape beyond the desire to mirror the classic Marvel interpretation of the character.
June 4th, 2010 at 3:12 am
Here’s my interpretation of what Thor should look like…
http://gunplanet.deviantart.com/#/d2q1trq
June 4th, 2010 at 6:33 am
i didn’t know thor was from the future… have the producers even read a thor comic? thor’s not some dumbass wearing futuristic rubber glowing stuff, pants and army boots, holding some toy hammer. he’s a bloody norse god with chainmail, armor plates, a leather tabard, holding freaking mjolnir! mjolnir of all things!! where’s the godlike epicness?
if thor looks this bad, imagine loki. he’ll probably have a helmet like the green goblin…
June 4th, 2010 at 9:41 am
Shorten the cape, add the helmet.
June 6th, 2010 at 12:29 am
Thor, god of Rock and Roll! lol

June 6th, 2010 at 9:44 am
why is he in a space suit? those pants and boots suck. where’s the brown leather?
June 7th, 2010 at 3:41 pm
I wanna be Thor. I think this is, if not perfect, very very nice!!
June 8th, 2010 at 10:14 pm
It looks like a mess.
The top part looks fine but the bottem portion is just pure disaster. I have a bad feeling about this movie and this “concept art” is reinforcing this feeling. If this is what Thor will look like then someone dropped the ball.
Big time.
June 9th, 2010 at 12:10 am
The more I see this the worse it gets. Marvel has a chance to shock viewers with something really good out of left field. Make MOST of the film a period piece and, at best, make this looks the modern day/end-of-film look. This looks like something out of the Iron Man movie. Junk it. Give us something gritty, mythic, and visceral – not just some blond guy in a Buck Rogers costume.
June 17th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
for an original Thor fan, it,s not what i would have wanted, but top half looks good, got to consider its hollywood and they,d screw up a junkyard, hope the movie surprises everyone, it,l be interesting, dont know when iv wondered about a movie so much as this one and how they,r gonna pull it off, i mean they screwed the character up when they had the ultimate crap, a hammer that looks like an axe? sh–, anyway , he,s my favorite of all marvel, should have been more muscular , bigger, regal, looking, but that,s hollywood, looking forward to film any way, it is hard to trans late a comic book hero to film, they,v screwed them all up so far , so, Batman 1 was ok, x-men so so, fantastic four, o k, , bring it on we,re waiting.
September 10th, 2010 at 8:08 am
Favorite Thor was the Walt Simonson armoured version from the late eighties.

Hello. This article was extremely fascinating, especially because I was browsing for thoughts on this issue last Tuesday.
January 17th, 2011 at 2:41 pm
The consistency of your ideas are placed well considering the compication of the topic. I can not begin to thank you enough for all you have done. Thank you for investing the time into this.
