In order to fully realize writer Paul Dini’s particular interests in the character Zatanna, the new Zatanna ongoing monthly by Dini and artists Stephane Roux and Karl Story should have been published on the mature readers Vertigo imprint rather than the all-ages DCU imprint.

I think there is some space for DCU mature reader titles: Secret Six, Zatanna, Doom Patrol and Suicide Squad.

I’m not sure what Paul Dini’s “particular” interests are outside of the fact that she’s a character that he’s enjoyed for a long time and reminds him of his wife.

Maybe being able to read what’s lettered on the page isn’t the point? Maybe the point is the all the liquid in the vat/ container that Zatanna’s chained in is depicted (as possibly) resembling a lot of a certain bodily fluid?
At first I just took it to be water, but on second look, and after not being able to read any text….

From what little I can see–and again, text or no, it’s hard to really get a full grasp of the images–the liquid is done more so to enhance her assets as opposed to being a stand-in for what would otherwise be a much stickier situation.
Regardless, I find it ironic that titles like these are labeled “mature” since they seem to be anything but based on the images I always see.

I was under the impression that Dini courted his wife because she reminded him of Zatanna. I suppose it’s not quite the same, but it should be enough for him that he could act out his fetishes with her instead of making me watch.
