I really enjoyed the latest "Agent of style" articles (Ms Marvel/Warbird), but it seems all the past, archived articles have none of the images loaded anymore. This really dilutes the reading experience for articles involving costume/fashion, and according to comments posted by other readers, it seems it's been an issue for the past several months. I wonder if the website administrators look into this glitch? I'd love to be able to read the style articles of Iron Man, Dr Strange, etc and be able to see what the writer is referring to. Thanks so much. I love this blog.

I was hoping to re-read this article, as I do many of your AoS articles, but the pics won't load up.
Probably either me, or a temporary thing, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Love the AoS articles, thank you. They make excellent lunchtime / breakfast time / cup of tea and a ciggy time reading...

It's important to remember that Batman Beyond is DCAU continuity, not DCU, and one of the reasons for making Terry's suit simplistic was to make the animation easier and more fluid. I'm sure if the idea had grown out of comics continuity the suit would be different, but as it is? It works. Also, different generation, different bat. Terry's suit is as entrenched in my DCAU-bred mind as Bruce's from B:TAS.

Clark: Amazingly, there aren't as many of these images available online as you'd think, so getting some of them together was really the most difficult part. Thanks for the comment, it's appreciated.

Awesome article!

I do have one minor tweak of advice in addition to the others - Azrael didn't decide to make his costume red for their final confrontation, I think, it was caused by some kind of acid or burn if I remember correctly. It was graphically intended, obviously, to separate the two, but I don't remember the character changing the color intentionally.

Twincastx: Definitely a fun look but again a danger of one color being too dominant.

Woofus: The yellow oval appeared in comics about two years before the TV show began airing.

Mark D. White: Roy meant it for that AND for revising/altering history. He did both often during his Invaders and JSA stories to explain things like why there were conflicting accounts of the same origin or why 1940s Namor seemed drastically different at times compared to how Stan Lee made him. So today's meaning is pretty in keeping with what he did.

Forget the part about Dick's gloves and boots - they had raised bits on both costumes, but in a different way. (I still find them odd on the Batman costume.)

Another great article - a couple comments:

1. I always thought the raised bits on Dick's gloves and boots referenced his Nightwing outfit (though I never went so far as to check).

2. Wasn't the original meaning of "retroactive continuity" coined by Roy Thomas in his All-Star Squadron days, in which he explained how he fit in his new stories within existing continuity (e.g., not changing a character's costume or marrying them off until their original stories had ended). I always felt that the modern meaning of "retcon" - being revisionist rather than accommodating to established history - was a corruption of Thomas' ideals (in other words, a wicked real-world Superboy-punch). (OK, off the soapbox now.)

I agree with Woofus - I was fairly sure the yellow circle came from the TV show first, as they needed to break the design up a bit and make it pop.

Though the bat-signal definitely appeared in the show, or at least it did in the movie, and then later on the show. A lot of the props that they couldn't afford in the TV show got paid for with the movie budget like the bat-copter and bat-boat.

Wasn't the yellow circle added by Julius Schwartz, to make the comic match the Adam West TV show? It calls to mind the bat-signal, though this did not actually appear on the show (except in the opening credits).

Excellent article - one omission I think though. At some point in the 2000's after No Man's Land (I know not when exactly, but before Dick G becomes Batman), the yellow oval on Bruce Wayne's costume disappears, and reverts to the Year One / Bob Kane silhouette. I'd be interested in your view/interpretation on that change.

This was a fun and well rounded list! I do think for some reason Batman Beyond as an adult version pulls off the same costume better somehow, not really sure why just more dominating presence maybe. I'm really enjoying these articles, please keep 'em coming. :)

The resemblance to future Tim's outfit in Titans for Tomorrow was the first thing I noticed when I saw Dick's Batsuit.

Good list. I have to say I hate the shoulder spikes on the cape. Ruins the silhouette for me.

Given the brief mention of No Man's Land I'm a little surprised that the "Batman" costume that The Huntress wore (and was essentially passed down to Batgirl Cassandar Cain) wasn't mentioned.

I think Tim's Titans Tomorrow batsuit is worth mentioning -- it bears resemblance to Dick's but has a better belt.
