The Cape Trailer- Wait, Could This Actually Rock?

May 18th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

David mentioned just yesterday that a new superhero show called The Cape had been ordered by NBC, and could be seen as a replacement for Heroes. He also noted that the show’s description sounded like pretty much the cheesiest possible show ever. Then, I saw the trailer.

Hmm, either this is one damn fine editor, or this show might actually wind up pretty awesome. In fact, with the Batman Begins-esque training scene, this could be the closest thing to a mature live-action Batman TV Show we’re likely to get.

Yes, it looks pretty cool, but I’m probably still not going to watch it. I invested four years into ‘Heroes’ and NBC just cans it without wrapping it up. Who’s to say the same thing won’t happen to this show if NBC doesn’t like the ratings?

However, if they have a crossover episode where The Cape fights Sylar, I’ll be there with bells on. :)

  2. Bhurn Says:

    @Ken

NBC is planning a two hour wrapup to Heroes which will probably air midseason.

  3. Mr Nobody Says:

Looks cool, I’m down for it. I got a very Blade-ish feel from it (not a complaint mind you).

But if they want to go more than 1 season, they’ll have to add/change something to the “hero fights the baddies” theme. Bru’s Dare Devil wouldn’t be a bad place to reference from as a start. Or DeMatteis’ Spider Man.

  4. JTas Says:

This looks pretty awesome. Maybe I’ll actually watch something on NBC again.

And as for Heroes…sorry @Ken, but there’s a reason why it got canceled. It just wasn’t good.

  5. Tommy Says:

Nope. Sorry. That looks pretty terrible. It felt like being smacked in the face with the cliché handbook for 3 minutes straight. Heroes, while occasionally rather corny (*ahem Volume 3, ahem*), was not as bad as that

  6. Adam Says:

I’m so tired of people like Ken complaining about networks canceling shows with shitty ratings. NBC is not a charitable organization. If the ratings for a show like Heroes perpetually fall and fall until it’s no longer profitable, what exactly do you expect them to do?

  7. BookWyrm Says:

I’ll take a look at the full episode when it hits.

  8. Doctroid Says:

Thanks Tommy, I was looking for the right phrase to describe this, and “smacked in the face with the cliché handbook” is pretty much what I was after. I like Summer Glau, but not enough to want to watch this.

  9. JoseUllos Says:

It doesn`t matter if the show is good or not, what matters is that they already gave us the first episode there! The editor didn´t leave much to the imagination, we even got to see how it ends.

  10. Gina Says:

Yeah, it does look pretty cliche. But! If they give us good storylines every episode (since we already know the overall plot, assumingly), then I’m down for it. We’ll see…

  11. My Name is You Says:

It looks fun, and even better it feels like comics finally got to TV !
I am really looking forward to watch it. And there is Summer Glau !

  12. wakko379 Says:

    Vinnie Jones! Sweet!

  13. Jordan T. Says:

they had me at Summer Glau…

  14. Scott Summers Says:

Batman rip-off without the rights. PERIOD.

  15. Bryan H Says:

Other than the fact it’s a guy without superpowers, I don’t think it’s much like Batman. His family is still alive and all, he’s got a kid, that seems like a far cry from the stone-cold Batman.

  16. durkadurka Says:

Best case scenario: it won’t suck. That’s all i got.

Batman rip-off without the rights (I’m on my) PERIOD.

    *fixed*

  18. Barry Says:

The cast looks good. Not sure about the dialogue though. Hopefully it pans out because there isn’t much I am going to be watching once Lost and 24 finish. Leaves me with just Castle and shows on DVD from HBO or Showtime.

  19. Wookiee Says:

Personally I think it’s pretty cool. Maybe something I can watch with my kids on prime time that’s not a cornball sitcom. Really looking forward to this. Could be a runaway hit. Between this and Human Target right now I am a happy man.

  20. bhashthur Says:

I think I pretty much got the whole story for the season in the trailer, so I don’t need to watch the episodes anymore!

Certain parts of it made me cringe a bit. The whole ‘cape’ thing looks seriously lame, and the characters seem really weak.

Hm… the more you sit on it, the lamer it seems actually. Yeah, its starting to smell like a turd.

  21. Wayne Says:

Looks pretty good, but not even a little domino mask? Huh. Damn actor egos :( I liked what I saw, though, so I’ll definately check it out.

  22. Mackey Says:

Why can’t people acknowledge that Heroes was just plain BAAAD! As in horrible, w/o the potential for getting better. Four years of shear awfulness. Here’s a suggestion, why don’t they just make Kick-Ass a series? I could just watch Hit Girl do her thing for a whole half hour.

  23. Ryan Says:

Samllville has it right. This show will not do well! I hope it does though!

  24. Ken Says:

    @Bhurn
That’s still a rumour that’s going around. Nothing has been 100% finalized (even though I would gladly take a 2-hour wrap-up).

    @JTas
That’s one person’s opinion. I personally enjoyed the series. Yes, it’s never been as good ever since the writer’s strike during Season 2 but I still thought it was good. All I wanted was a conclusion to the series. I hate it when you’re left hanging.

    @Adam
So, what shows do you enjoy? Would you like it if a show you faithfully followed was suddenly canceled with no real ending? NBC can cancel it if the ratings are low. That’s fine. Just come to that conclusion earlier so you can give the show an ending. Too many of my favourite shows have just disappeared now without real endings (Angel, Firefly, Invasion, Jericho [at least CBS tried to give a final wrap-up on that], Two Guys and a Girl, etc.).

  25. jedifish Says:

Sweet! Summer Glau! I’ll be checking it out.

It’s gotta be better than the last 3 seasons of Heroes.

  26. Evil greg Says:

We’ll have to wait and see but it did look pretty solid and lets face it..after Heros shit the bed so badly we’re lucky to get any super hero fare on prime time at all. I’ll gladly take “doesn’t suck” any day of the week!!!

  27. Richard J. Marcej Says:

When it comes to American network TV we’re always at the mercy of ratings. That’s the trouble with serial styled shows.

For every “Life On Mars”, which ABC canceled but the producers gave it an ending (good or bad is up for debate) on the 13th episode we have “Journeyman” which NBC canceled but the producers never actually had an ending.

As for “The Cape”, IMO, as long as they don’t use the old “travel-to-the-alternate-dark-apocalyptic-future-scenario” that “Heroes” did to death, then they’re alright with me.

  28. Disney Warlord Says:

I think it might be good! I’ll admit, it does look alittle bit cheesy but what hero isn’t! Even the awesome super heros had there cheesy moments. I’ll watch it and I think anyone who likes the hero genre should too.

With “Heroes”, I’m sure they are already working on a movie. It might take awhile to write and get funding, but I’m sure they will. I suggest sticking with a long series like “Doctor Who” if you don’t like your favorite show to end, I’m still trying to watch all the originals from the 1960′s up to now.

But, I plan to watch “The Cape” and even if it bombs on tv I’ll gave it a chance. I didn’t even like “Fringe” when it came out till I gave it a chance and now I schedule my Thursdays to watch it.

  29. Pennyforth Says:

I’m interested just to see Summer Glau in a regular role where her character isn’t the “odd girl”; between Firefly/Serenity and the Terminator series, she was skirting the edge of becoming typecast. It will be nice to see her playing a regular person (at least where social skills are concerned) for a change.

  30. Ed Says:

Could be silly fun. The only suggestions I would make would be “shave” and “put a mask on under that hood”, though I was relieved that it didn’t turn out to be quite the “Smallville-style hoodie-based-costume” thing I was afraid of when I first saw the still.

  31. Bonzo Says:

This looks like it will chew butt on a weekly basis. I mean, “Say Hello Dorothy Bitch!”? Awful, reeks of desperate, carbon-copy, stereo-typical, pandering to the nerd crowd type of programming from NBC… big surprise.

    FAIL

  32. gambit8370 Says:

As an aging fanboy who is now trying to raise a son to have similarly hero-inspired values… I’m all in.

  33. Jamie Says:

This looks like it has potential and hopefully it doesn’t go to cliche. Evil greg is right as well, after Heroes on NBC were lucky to be getting anything dealing with a superhero.

  34. Brandon Says:

I find the lack of grim-dark inspiring. Straight up hero romp? I’m in.

  35. DaVeO Says:

The trailer sold me on at least the pilot. It looks no worse then the JSA-Smallville, which while a little cheesy at times was still a lot of fun. The cape as an actual weapon is fairly unique, and the show embracing a costumeed hero is refreshing *pokes Smallville producers*.

I would love for this show to be a gateway for some more superhero shows. Maybe a return of The Flash under Geoff Johns watchful eye? :)

  36. Lan Pitts Says:

I think this series would work better if it wasn’t set in modern times. This sort of has a noir feel and probably the 40′s and 50′s would have seemed like a more natural feel, instead of imagery of a caped crusader in modern-times.

  37. The Pencil Neck Says:

I’m in. I’ll add it to my DVR list and watch at least the first few episodes and hope it turns into something good.
