SPIDER-MAN, GHOST RIDER Get One-Shots for SHADOWLAND

May 14th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

Over on CBR, they have the first announcement of another chapter in the Shadowland saga, SHADOWLAND: SPIDER-MAN. Written by Dan Slott and drawn by Paulo Siqueira, the one-shot will feature Spider-Man and Shang Chi teaming up in the Shadowland against Spidey’s BND nemesis Mr. Negative.

Slott assured them that “you’re good to go” on this One-Shot whether you’re just reading Amazing Spider-Man and want an extra Spidey story, or if you’re just reading Shadowland and want the extra chapter there.

On Marvel.com, Ghost Rider joins in the fight in his own one-shot as well. Rob Williams writes this one, with artist Clayton Crain, who should be plenty familiar to GR fans. Rob Williams doesn’t give away which Ghost Rider is involved in the one-shot, and teases that his status as Spirit of Vengeance will be tested heavily.

So, two more one-shots added to the list, this is becoming a pretty big “little” crossover. Is Shadowland and its companion pieces shaping up to something you want to read?

Bummer this Shadowland “event” is getting out of hand fast. As much as I enjoy Daredevil, I can’t pick all these extra Shadowland issues that may or may not really mean much to the Daredevil ongoing or really key to telling the Shadowland tale.

Good thing it’ll be collected in a more affordable trade format via online comic stores for about 35-70% off the cover price of all these tie-ins.

Looks like they’re taking the Annihilation model (multiple minis leading into one big one) and tinkering with it a bit. I might’ve been interested before, but it’ll probably be priced at $4 a pop for everything, and that’s just too much.

Best of luck to them though. It looks interesting (or at least is vague enough thus far to be interesting).

  3. DaVeO Says:

This IS getting a little out of hand. But that’s Marvel for you. Still most of the tie-ins sound interesting, I just hope strong editorial keeps it all relevent.

Still waiting for Wolverine mini and Elektra mini. Yeah this is getting out of control. Even if its a great story it is getting to expensive to get everything. I thought Marvel said they werent going to do the big event again for a while.

  5. Sweet Dan Says:

Marvel editorial said they were doing more CONTAINED events…they never said they weren’t going to do events at all.

the ‘Shadowland’ storyline runs touches upon a great deal of the street-level characters…but it doesn’t seem to be crossing over with the X-Men, Fan 4, Hulk, Cosmic, or anyone else.

If the characters are IN the main story, you can probably expect a one-shot…but hey, at least they’re one-shots and not 3 issue minis…

I don’t see anything wrong with it.

  6. McEvil One Says:

I’m waiting for Marvel to announce a Deadpool 4 part mini-series as part of Shadowland…

  7. Ryan Says:

I liked the Daredevil story, but I wish it was contained to his own book. Maybe build up the conclusion and bring in the characters needed. I won’t be buying shawdowland. I do pick up Daredevil every once and awhile so i’m not really a target audience I guess…

  8. Matt Says:

Well, Marvel is making it awfully easy for me to just drop Daredevil (which I was considering doing BEFORE the deluge of tie-ins to a storyline that should’ve been resolved solely in DD).

And as McEvil One mentioned, I’m stunned…STUNNED…that Deadpool isn’t a part of this yet.

I really enjoyed the Bendis and Brubaker runs, but Diggle seems to be taking Daredevil away from reality and back into standard comic book silliness (not that I have anything against comic book silliness). I was sorta kinda looking forward to the Shadowland mini, but the ginormous deluge of minis and one-shots has turned me off immensely. I think Marvel have created a pretty good jumping-off point.

  10. Clonebuster Says:

Another tie-in to another big event? Yawn.

  11. axonrey Says:

Ironically enough, I was just talking to someone about what I appreciated most about DD was the simplicity of a street level superhero, more influenced by crime fiction than the standards of comic book storytelling. Then this happened…

Looked up contained in the dictionary.. didn’t sound anything like what’s happening here.

    Testing…

I actually just started reading Daredevil with #500 and I’ve really enjoyed Diggle’s work. Of course, I know that Bendis and Brubaker have become legendary for their work on the title, but I think Diggle’s direction has felt perfectly natural and logical for Murdock.

As for the supernatural stuff, that’s always been a part of the Hand, and I don’t think of it as “comic book silliness” at all. Even at it’s most “realistic” Daredevil is still a book about a guy who gets superpowers from toxic waste that spilled into his eyes. Sounds pretty silly to me.

While some of you may see Shadowland as a good jumping off point (and good luck to you. I hope you find another book), I am excited for this story and am looking forward to seeing some street-level throwdowns (esp. Wolverine, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight, not to mention Daredevil himself), and I’ll take whatever I can get as long as it looks good.

  15. Maxwell's Hammer Says:

If you started with #500 and are enjoying things, more power to you. Its not horrible, its just a lot different from all the things I enjoyed about Bendis & Brubaker. There was a certain vividly noir spark to they way they characterized Murdoch and his tragic goings-on. Diggle has kind of simplified things, thrown out all the atmosphere, and focused everything cool fight scenes and a one-dimensional story-arc.

As for the Shadowland mini, buying a 4 issue mini-series would have been palatable, but all the side-minis and one-shots is over doing it, not to mention the fact that it’ll probably all be priced at $3.99. With every new announcement, I actually find myself getting less and less interested.

If somebody out there enjoys this sort of thing, more power to you. But its a few bucks a month that I’ll be saving.

  16. phil Says:

Having just recently getting back in to DD, I’m intrigued by this ShadowLand scenario. I’m not much into
tie ins, but I’ll give each a wait and see approach. I’m
almost certain to be picking up the main series, hopefully
    not to my regret.

  17. Ian Says:

I would love to be able to buy all of these. I simply can’t though. I’ll probably be forced to stick to Daredevil and the regular Shadowland book.
