Eric Canete assembles the Avengers

And God is it glorious.

This print will be available this weekend at C2E2, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy drooling over this piece now. It’s pretty much everything I would want out of an Avengers roster and THEN some. I had the pleasure to see Canete work on the original for the print at MegaCon of this year as a commission fro Tim Townsend.

The thing is, Canete actually did two of these. “He actually laid it out in blue line and finished the piece right there at the show,” explains Townsend on comicartfans.com. “Whats totally insane is that the paper he initially used wasnt taking the ink so he totally STARTED OVER from scratch and still managed to finish it at the show.”

Now, I know blog@ just mentioned Canete’s blog, but this piece by itself warranted some extra attention.

What the heck are you talking about? That’s wretched artwork with no sense of anatomy! Besides, isn’t selling prints at shows a violation of copyrights and trademarks.

  2. Mike Thompson Says:

Have to agree with Laura. This “art” is pretty much a turd. Highly detailed, but grossly (pun intended) proportioned. Thor looks wrinkly and out of shape, so underwhelming in appearance as a god of thunder. Not impressed at all.

  3. Erik Says:

You know who else is a piece of shit? That Salvador Dali guy. Yeah! No respect for reality at all! Artists these days! I tell ya…

  4. Jon Says:

Yeah, Bill Sienkiewicz and Dave McKean are awful. I don’t see how they ever got any work. Insert eye roll.

  5. otomo Says:

Wow…so, even though it’s nicely detailed and gets the point across, it’s “bad”? Our culture has delved into this “everything has to have realism” garbage which has ruined creativity in TV, Movies, video games and is starting to make its work in comics too. These media were never intended to be realistic with shaky cameras. And Eric Canete didn’t draw that picture to be a photo that’s done up to look like a real person. At risk of being juvenile – lrn 2 imagination pplz.

  6. Chris Says:

I really like the image except for one thing — it’s missing The Wasp [Janet Van Dyne]. Considering she is one of the founding members and The Hulk is included and given a prominent place within the artwork, it’s a terrible oversight.

Did Tim Townsend not request her?

  7. PotatoPope Says:

@Chris Janet is dead, all the other are still alive. Hmm, coincidence?

  8. Joe H Says:

Apparently only artists like McNiven, Hitch, and Lee can be considered good artists because they’re “realistic.” Heaven forbid an artist be stylized. Nope, only one style for us please.

  9. Luan Says:

Also want to chime in that this is AMAZING art. I love everything that Canete does; he has a very distinct style. It is very dynamic and full of life/energy; though static images, there is actual movement on the page. And when we are dealing with pictorial storytelling, you need this sort of visual energy to tell the story properly. I’d rather have this “wacky” anatomy over stilted tracing of photos any day.

  10. Fiona Staples Says:

    Gorgeous piece! Love his work.

  11. mw Says:

Gee, more artistic interpretations. Why buy this, when there are 1000′s on Deviantart right now for free?

  12. Cully Hamner Says:

This piece, like everything Canete does, is outstanding. Those first two posters are insane.

  13. Ross Jenkins Says:

it would be kinda nice to see Janet in their (although PotatoPope is onto something with these characters all being “alive again”)

but isn’t it quite cute that Hank Pym as Ant-Man is riding on the back of a Wasp? that’s a pretty neat touch there.

and I’ll through my hat in as someone esle that like’s Canete’s work (though I think Erik may’ve said it best).

  14. Josh Tanner Says:

I thought the art here was quite well done. It showcases a very stylized realism. These are characters with extraordinary abilities, and purposes, and I don’t think art that was completely realistic would do these majestic figures justice.

  15. B. Clay Moore Says:

Eric Canete is a beast. The guy can draw circles around most anyone.

    Beautiful stuff, as always.

  16. Comic Book Candy Says:

Wow, what’s with all of the haters? I thought this was a pretty fantastic rendition of the Avengers, not to mention the fact that the dude finished it at a con, while probably doing other commissions and still talking to loads of fans. You may not like his style, but you have to respect the skill that went into this creation.

P.s. – love the Vision / Scarlet Witch in the back.
