To quote James Earl Jones: “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”
Comics Alliance has dropped a bombshell from WonderCon — that Greg Rucka, the driving force behind the new Batwoman, is done both with Kathy Kane and DC Comics for the foreseeable future.
CA’s Laura Hudson, who moderated the Greg Rucka Spotlight panel in which he released this news, also got some bad news about whether or not there would be an upcoming Rucka/J.H. Williams III Batwoman series, to further flesh out the character. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get to do it,” he said. Rucka will instead focus on working on his Queen & Country series, as well as a few as-yet-undetermined projects.
For those who have been living under a rock, Rucka’s Detective Comics — particularly his rendition of this new Batwoman — has been getting rave reviews (including a few from us), not to mention winning a GLAAD Media Award. Best of luck on your new endeavors, Greg!
UPDATE: Rama correspondent Albert Ching has gotten a small WonderCon update on the Mothership about the future of Batwoman, over at the DC Universe Editorial panel:
[DC Senior Story Editor Ian] Sattler: “We have plans for Batwoman.”
[DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff] Johns: “We want Greg (Rucka) to write it, but he’s focusing on his career right now.”
Sattler: “There’s no shelving.”

Big surprise. DC is too cowardly to continue the best comic they’ve produced in years.
Homophobia is alive and well at DC comics.
Nice job, Diane Nelson.
April 2nd, 2010 at 10:03 pm
Ugh. You have no idea what’s going on in this situation. Yeah it’s sad that such a great series may be wrapping up but jumping to “homophobia” as the reason for it is just inflamatory.
April 2nd, 2010 at 10:05 pm
i guess detective is off my list now, i just hope we can get those other 5 issues eventually out of rucka and jh3 maybe in a mini or something, i know ill buy the HC in july. this spoils my night, when morrison leaves batman it will spoil my month!!

hydrogen, unfortunately TopJack is probably not far off.
DC has had an aversion to Batwoman getting any sort of major popularity since she was first announced. They know the fans want the book, but they’re too scared to let an actual book go out with her title because of right wing reactions to it.
Look at the crap Marvel went through Rawhide Kid and the Captain America stuff. They could choose to ignore it and just publish it anyway (which I would do myself) but they must know there’s some sort of substantial loss in advertising/sales that’s just not letting them go ahead with it.
Either that or top brass in Time Warner are Tea Party Members and/or Republicans and are stopping it themselves.
The sheer fact that no one’s willing to give some sort of clear response to all this is enough of an answer.
April 2nd, 2010 at 11:22 pm
The biggest drawback of the internet is giving voice to people who are so comfortable forming opinions with zero factual basis.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:38 am
Since everyone is making up reasons why this may or may not be happening, I’m going ahead and going to 110% assure you this book is being canceled because of West Bank settlements. You heard it here first. Also, Walt Whitman.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:40 am
@Steve Broome: I totally agree with you. They will respect this character. Its not the Didio era anymore. There is a whole lot left open from this current issue of Detective. She is not going away. There are several great writers at DC who can do her justice. She can be in the league or Gail Simone can take her into the Birds. But I should hope that the Batwoman book goes ahead. Just not with anyone awful or Grant Morrison who falls under that same umbrella
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:41 am
Way to ruin my morning. I’ve been waiting patiently for this new series. His run with JHW has to one of my favorite runs in a very long time.
I can’t believe it will not continue.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:50 am
Time for Marvel to get out the checkbook and do some Rucka wooing.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:52 am
No great loss here, in my opinion. I thought the run on Detective was really overrated.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:53 am
I’ve loved the Batwoman run of Detective Comics. But there’s a problem with the premise of her origin. The reason see leaves the armed services and eventually takes up a costume is that she violated Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. With DADT coming to an end, her origin soon won’t make any sense. There won’t be any reason why she couldn’t have continued serving her country as she wanted. Her origin ties her to a time that won’t make sense in a few years with the shifting timeline of comics. I’m curious Rucka and DC didn’t realize that, because it’s been clear for awhile that DADT is on it’s way out.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:54 am
This is the WORST NEWS EVER! Those Batwoman Detective comics have been completely pushing the limits of what comic book storytelling is, and now we will not see anymore of it. Screw this Brightest Day crap. I wanted Batwoman comics, but no more. This blows.
…unless of course another great writer takes on Batwoman with J.H. Williams III on art…
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:08 am
I hope Marvel hires him and puts him on Moon Knight!
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:09 am
I think crying homophobia’s a bit premature (and I’m a gay reader who’s fairly sensitive to those issues). Comics increasingly seem to become as liberal as their readers’ pocketbooks. If people are consistently shelling out bucks to read a lesbian Batwoman by Rucka & Williams, DC’s gonna keep putting it out there on some form as long as they can afford to pay the creators.
That aside, this news REALLY sucks. Detective Comics has been the only DC title I read b/c of Rucka/Williams Batwoman and the new series was about to make me a regular.
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:17 am
Am I the only one who reads that he’s going to focus on Queen & Country and some other, potentially new properties and thinks, “Good!”? I didn’t dislike his Detective stuff, but it’s a DC Universe superhero book. They’ll find someone else to take over, and it’ll either be as good, or it won’t and then they’ll do it all again in six months. Creator-owned books, especially good ones like Q&C, are fewer and father between, and deserve more celebration, in my opinion.
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:21 am
I enjoyed the hell out of those Batwoman Detective Comics. At a time when I couldn’t really afford to buy comics I was still buying those. I agree that it’s not smart to just jump to some conclusion comprised more of your own beliefs than those of DC Comics, but this is kind of fishy.
From stories that I had read it seemed that both Rucka and JHW3 had a vested interest in these stories and were really looking forward to publishing a Batwoman Comic. And now Rucka is not only going on record as not writing the book but also parting ways with DC entirely? That makes me think that something is up. Especially with the acclaim that book good (and well deserved in my opinion, it was my favorite book of last year by far) it’s weird that DC wouldn’t be pushing to get it released.
As much as I loved that book it was mainly for the art and the biggest travesty here is that we may not be seeing anymore of JHW3′s beautifully rendered Batwoman Strikes pages. Of course that’s assuming they don’t release the book with JHW3 and some other writer. Which I have to admit would be mildly disappointing, but only mildly.

April 3rd, 2010 at 8:22 am
Maybe Vic Sage can come back as the Question now?
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:25 am
Homophobia??? Really??? If homophobia was really that pervasive at DC Comics, then Batwoman wouldn’t have got a push to begin with.
TopJack = FAIL
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:26 am
Yes!! what Russ said! why the hell is no one else making this point?!
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:32 am
Good finally. Batwoman and Booster Gold have been hyped up to no end in the last 3-4 years. Obviously its not showing any impact in sales. They have Green Lantern now for that.
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:35 am
Another reason that crying homophobia is silly: we all knew going into this that Batwoman was a temporary stand in, that eventually (sooner rather than later, most likely) ‘Tec would go back to being a Batman book. we all knew this. didn’t we? or were we all sitting around waiting for this evetuality so we could scream “See? DC hates homosexuals!” or “I knew they’d cave under the pressure!” as soon as it happened?
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:35 am
Wow,what a shock I mean who would believe that the anglo saxon’s in control at time warner and DC would ever do such a thing. Now with republican comics at DC at full control as usual they can next move to shorthanding minorities like they always do. Like Kyle Rayner,or the 2nd FireStorm.
Best to just placate writers like Mcduffie by integrating milestone comics and resorting their rostor to a bunch of useless Z-listers. Congradulations DC and Time Warner. Alot easier to promote the caucasians right….
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:43 am
Dropped ‘Tech the minute I saw the Batwoman storyline. I don’t have a problem with someone writing something that the GLADD crowd enjoys, but that does not mean I have to buy it.
Not my cup ‘o tea. Must appeal to someone because DC has devoted their flagship book (DC = Detective Comics) and a couple of high profile creators on the title.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:00 am
@ Daniel
The ending of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell isn’t going to invalidate Batwoman’s origin. Her origin was placed firmly with in the time frame of DADT, and thus it still would have played a role in it.
Take a look at any former military personnel that were removed from service because of that policy. It isn’t going to magically reinstate them.
The policy existed and it’s removal isn’t going to change that fact. All it’s removal does is maybe add a portion of clarification as a history lesson in the future when DADT is merely a memory.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:01 am
Kyle Rayner is a minority?
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:10 am
Homophobia may not exist at DC, but it does within the fan community. Just using the term “The GLAAD crowd” is evidence of that.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:11 am
Batwoman has fallen victim to some bad editorial decisions. This comes as no surprise as DC tends to take anything it produces that is the least bit different from the Jim Lee house style and dumps it in the ash can. Take for example… Ummm … Well how about that great run on… er …. huh, how about that?
Well anyway, the real reason Batwoman is leaving Detective is because she is being replaced by Dick Grayson who will be adopting a new mantle when Bruce Wayne returns as Batman! Get ready for Dective Comics starring RIGHTWING!
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:14 am
Making up reasons as to why Rucka is leaving looks fun! Let me try…
Well, looks like NObama’s health care plan has just cost us Rucka on Batwoman! Way to go Spendacrats!
That was fun!
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:17 am
Kyle is half mexican. Sometimes. Whenever they remember.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:29 am
Something must of happened betweeen DC and Rucka.
I can’t believe Rucka just up and quits to do his creator-owned things when he was planning a Batwoman series after having to move from Detective. Something just doesn’t seem right.
I’m happy for him, but sad for the Kate and Bette characters.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:40 am
My fingers are crossed for a late April Fools
PLEASE!!
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:43 am
detective comics is panterrible, just give batwoaman her own book or make it a co-feature in batgirl which also sucks
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:47 am
Perhaps it comes down to simple economics. Has anyone thought that maybe Rucka’s exclusive contract was up for renewal and he wanted more money than DC wanted to pay? Just a guess, no facts behind it, but it makes more sense than some other theories.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:54 am
These cries of homophobia are absolutely ridiculous. Newsflash folks, Batwoman headlining Detective Comics was a far far bigger deal than her just getting her own ongoing series. If DC truly was filled with homophobes as the truly stupid seem to think, they would not have even have let the character take the place of Batman in their flagship title, or even have been created in the first place.
Fanboy kneejerk reactions are always the worst
April 3rd, 2010 at 10:14 am
Terrible news indeed. The combination of that writer with that artist doing that character was pure magic! Hopefully DC will explain the situation.
April 3rd, 2010 at 10:20 am
Funny that TopJack guy who kept crying Homophobia was also the first person to comment in CBR’s Robot 6.
April 3rd, 2010 at 10:49 am
I don’t know. Is homophobia a stretch? Maybe, but it’s hard to discount the change in DC’s executive structure having something to do with this. I can’t pretend to know what, but the most obvious answer is usually the correct one.
April 3rd, 2010 at 10:50 am
WHat the hell is this topjack guy talking about? DC when announcing Batwoman in 52 had a semi media blitz on a lesbian female donning a bat costume. They welcomed it from what I read. Don’t formulate/assume anything without background info…as they say it makes an ass outta you.
If anything DC has been good in addressing issues such as sexual orientation and drug abuse for as long as I can remember. I think DC has been a much better proponent for sensitive issues than Marvel ever has been (IMO) (if there is a comparison to be made) after reading both over 25 years or so. Anyway that comment was really ignorant. Thank you Rucka for giving us excellent charcterization and great stories. Sorry to see you go. You did justice to a character, many folks thought was just a gimmick.
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:02 am
TopJack, this is the most stupid comment ive ever see
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:16 am
This sucks my _______(Insert whatever word you want). My impression from the last time that I talked to Greg Rucka (at ECCC) is that he was very bitter toward DC. I was a bit worried when he wasn’t at the DC Nation panel, and the panel could not give an answer about the “Batwoman” ongoing. I think that DC, in all their infinite wisdom, has chosen to not allow him to pursue his own creative desires, which has frustrated him to the point where he wants a break. I will miss him, truly one of the greats. I almost want to say that I will not buy a “batwoman” comic written by anyone other than him unless it is a team book. ‘Tec is definately off my pull list.
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:21 am
@The shmo
Jim Lee is Anglo-Saxon??
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:43 am
Time to lose the pretender. Vic Sage, come get your white ring.
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:45 am
Who cares about Batwoman. The news about more Queen & Country makes this a great news day! Sandbagger fans rejoice!
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:50 am
Straight from Greg Rucka’s twitter feed:
“To all who sent kind words: thank you! No bad blood w/ DC; just time to move on.”
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:52 am
Better books have been cancelled or nipped in the past, with no political implications whatsoever. If there is more news to this story than what’s presented here, point me to it, but this article in no way indicates a cancellation because of some political agenda. This isn’t the first time a writer has up and quit a publisher in the midst of quality work. No evidence suggests this has anything to do with homophobia. Grow the fuck up!
April 3rd, 2010 at 12:03 pm
It’s obvious why Rucka’s leaving.
Due to internal squabbling, the Obama administration has told DC to shelve the Batwoman series until the blood feud between Nancy Pelosi and Hilary Clinton is resolved. Because of this selfish battle over a wig and some bondage leather, the fans must suffer.
Lousy Demoncrats…
Greg’s just being a patriot, thinking of the nation before his own creative interests.
Godspeed to your future, fine sir.
April 3rd, 2010 at 12:07 pm
@ Zoltan: That’s why I referred to the shifting timeline of comics. For a few years, Batwoman’s origin story will still make sense. In 10 years, it will be obsolete as DADT becomes history. It’s just like the Fantastic Four who stole a rocket to beat the commies into space. That just doesn’t work now.
The writing has been on the wall for DADT for awhile. So while Rucka created a compelling backstory for the character, he and DC must have known it would only have a limited lifespan.
April 3rd, 2010 at 12:13 pm
DCU version of American miliary history doesn’t have to match the real world anymore, remember? Just like political history stopped keeping pace with the real world once Lex Luthor was elected to the White House. We’ve also had DCU-specific mayors of NYC, UN Secretaries-General, etc. for quite some time. So DADT history on “New Earth” doesn’t have to match the real world either.
April 3rd, 2010 at 12:35 pm
Nooooooooooooo! Like others have said, the Rucka/JHW3 Detective starring Batwoman was the best thing DC had published in at least the last couple years. I’m extremely disappointed Rucka on Batwoman won’t continue.
On the other hand, new Queen & Country is great news.
April 3rd, 2010 at 12:48 pm
Saddened to see Rucka leaving Batwoman and DC as his stuff was pretty damn good. Course, the sadness goes away quickly now that I heard some more Queen and Country is coming out as a result! And wasn’t it also reported that Nicola Scott is going to do some of those issues as well?
April 3rd, 2010 at 12:56 pm
Very disappointed by this news as Detective has been an incredibly inventive and very unique book. Was getting very excited about Batwoman book with him writing it. Sad to see that he is leaving DC for time being. I am sure he will be back at some point, but I wish they had let him write this for a couple of years first. Good that we will see more creator owned stuff, but still, a great new book will now be passed to someone else or buried and it was not their book, their vision, their unique perspective and style of writing and incredible art. That is why I was going to buy it, for Rucka and JHW III.
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:22 pm
@Zane,
The problem with your theory is that homophobia is far, far from the most obvious explanation for Rucka leaving the book. There are many more obvious ones, starting with that old reliable: money.
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:47 pm
When it was announced that Batwoman’s ‘tec run was ending, Rucka did say that there would be a few projects on his plate and that he was going to have to choose between them; Looks like he made his choice…
ugh this sucks, Batwoman/Question was one of titles I started collecting monthly without fail since it started and one of my favorite titles in the last few years.
Now we get to see if DC decides to bring her back without Rucka…but that scares me because who knows what a new writer might do, like make her bi-sexual and have her start dating Dick or something…..ugh…..
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:48 pm
This homophobia issue makes no sense. DC put the character on one of their longest running and possibly a flag-ship title, threw their one of their best writers and artist onto it and let it sail. True the plug was pulled waaaaay too soon, but it wasn’t because of homophobia. Did everyone forget the back-up character is also gay?! DC is not full of homophobes, just bad decision makers.
The decision looks like it comes straight from Rucka. Q&C is his baby and it needs more nurturing.
A Kathy Kane for Tara Chase trade-off is absolutely fine with me.
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:50 pm
YOU ARE ALL MISINFORMED LIARS!!! the REAL reason Rucka is leaving and no Batwoman series will ever be produced is because the entire industry is a GODDAMN SCIENTOLOGY MEMBERSHIP DRIVE!! STUPIDS!!!
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:00 pm
This is terrible news, and I will be very sorry to see the Batwoman run in Detective Comics end. Rucka is one of my favorite writers, and he made me care about a character that I really had very little interest in during her run in 52. Now that neither he nor Dini will be writing Detective Comics, I will be dropping the book.
That said, can we PLEASE drop the whole “this move is because of homophobia at DC” thing?! If that were true, they never would have put the character out there to begin with. And while we’re at it, can we please stop blaming right-wing conservatism and the Republican Party?! I am a Republican (though I don’t agree with 100% of what the party does), and I am neither right-wing nor homophobic, and there are many others like me in the ranks of the GOP. Every party has its radicals, and no political group is perfect. I honestly believe that those who are that far to the right would be against just about all comic books and wouldn’t pay enough attention to single out any one title. I doubt 99% of the people at the Tea Party rallies even know who Kathy Kane is. This was most likely a creative decision and nothing more, but with such limited information about the reasoning behind it, blaming it on some kind of political agenda is just ridiculous.
My thanks to Mr. Rucka on another outstanding story. I will miss it.
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Creator owned books are cool, but few of them can live off them alone. Also, company-owned books feed creator-owned books and vice versa. You wouldn’t be getting Powers if Marvel didn’t keep it around to let Bendis stay happy. You wouldn’t have Invincible if Kirkman didn’t get tons of exposure at Marvel. You wouldn’t have all the great Apparat books from Warren Ellis if DC and Marvel didn’t make him famous.
Also, a creator-owned book is cool but they’re SO directly influenced by the big guys. I love Invincible because it takes a set of parameters laid by traditional superheroes like those at Marvel & DC, and blow it all to hell when necessary. You wouldn’t have one without the other. Batwoman wouldn’t have been as awesomely influential as it’s sure to be, and as critically acclaimed had it been an indie, simply because fewer people wouldn’t known about it.
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:19 pm
Well, dunno anything about why Rucka is leaving. Dunno what’s gonna happen with Batwoman and the Question. All I know is I started picking up Detective Comics to read those two characters, and when they leave I’ll be dropping it. I know I’m in a small minority, but I find those two characters much more interesting than Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson at this point.
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:27 pm
I must be the only person on this thread who finds Rucka’s writing to be terrible + a bit Mary Sueish. Won’t miss him or his complaining in interviews.
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:27 pm
It’s because of ANTI SEMETISM
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:30 pm
Rucka has a new Queen and Country novel coming out in October.
he may be wanting a new Q&C series to coincide with the book’s release, like Marvel and DC do with their books.
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:31 pm
THIS SUCKS! I was so blown away with Batwoman on Detective Comics. I believe in years to come, this run will stick out the same way the Marshal Rogers did on Detective Comics back in the 70′s. I am guessing what is going on here with Rucka and DC is the same thing that happened between Chuck Dixon and DC. If I remember correctly (Chuck, if you are reading this, please correct me if I am wrong) Chuck didn’t like the direction where the editors were taking with the Bat-family and jumped ship.
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:42 pm
DC does have a problem with showing high profile homosexual characters in prominent books. The Authority was shelved because of violence during Mark Millar’s run, but it was also relegated to second tier status because of the “Gay Superman” and “Gay Batman”, which DC proper did not seem to like (especially with the publicity that highlighted this fact)
We had a Batwoman title ever since 52, and we even got publicity from outside markets like USA Today that focused on Batwoman as a lesbian. But it took nearly a year and half for Batwoman to get an ongoing. Then we have Batwoman appearing in high profile books like Cry for Justice and suddenly she’s relegated to second tier status in those books. We have Rucka and JH William’s ongoing getting critical acclaim, but we have the title shuffled around yet again, to the point where Rucka not only does not want to do an ongoing, but doesn’t want to do ANY DC work.
It feels like DC just doesn’t want to put out a book that would garner interest outside of its line of books. Maybe a new article is coming out about Kathy Kane or possibly Kathy Kane may be a new character in the Batman film franchise. This isn’t the first time DC has stopped publishing a book due to “questionable” material (like the “Marvel Douche” incident for Alan Moore or the Swamp Thing/Jesus issue for Rich Veitch, or even more recently, the “Lenna Lerner/Superbaby” issue. I can easily see DC trying to shelve Batwoman while the popularity goes down and Rucka saying, “I can’t work for a company that keeps on shelving my book despite growing sales.”
April 3rd, 2010 at 3:24 pm
@ Daniel
Most super heroes have an origin that links fairly close to the time period that they were created in. Some of the origin stories are fairly dated by events of that time period, but periodically the comic companies do stories to update and modernize said origins.
The repealing of DADT doesn’t invalidate her origins for the current time period, or make it any less compelling. In fact, if DC wanted to mirror real life events they could have it come up in continuity and deal with it in character if they so felt like it.
In the future it could be DC’s decision to re-adjust her origins as they see fit, when and if they ever decide that the DADT portion of it no longer fits as an effective story device. It wouldn’t be the first time a character’s origin story was adjusted to eliminate weird anachronistic portions, and it won’t be the last.
I highly doubt that DADT played a prominent role in what ever decisions were made dealing with Ruka and Batwoman. I know that I won’t be forgetting DADT any time soon, having had friends effectively forced out of the military with out even having it explicitly said that their orientation was the reason.
April 3rd, 2010 at 3:38 pm
Ever since DC Comics became DC Entertainment, these cowardly corporate decisions have become common.
So what if DC Comics published Batwoman in Detective. That was before DC Entertainment became the boss.
Me think the new boss isn’t fond of showing “the gay” in her funny books.
April 3rd, 2010 at 3:48 pm
little kon-el said it better than I did
April 3rd, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Horrible news! Detective Comics featuring Batwoman is the finest comics out there and I´m pretty pissed Rucka´s run will end.
April 3rd, 2010 at 4:07 pm
Well, it seems Rucka is going to work hard in his own comics, and hopefully, some Marvel stuff here and there. IMO that doesn’t sound bad.
Peace.
April 3rd, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Just a guess but could this be because DC let Morrison tell the ending of Rucka’s whole cult of crime /new age of crime prophesy storyline in recent issues of Batman and Robin? I was surprised when I read those issues – like isn’t this the story Rucka and Williams were building towards? DC did this with New Gods and Morrison and Starlin. It’s like their editors don’t speak to each other.
April 3rd, 2010 at 4:29 pm
I did not know that using the term “GLADD Crowd” makes me a Homophobic. Nothing like a knee-jerk reaction to make one jump to conclusions. The Book did win a GLADD Media award, so I guess that group must think highly of the book.
April 3rd, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Well then how we all jump the book at a headline which noone read the “?” in. Obviously they weren’t just going to dump her. And as for everyone who didn’t get the run. You sorely missed some excellent storytelling and for you people who said Batman should be in the book…how many minis has Bruce had this year and then he has the superman/batman book and Dick has what? Seven or eight books. I think Kate Kane can be allowed one for a few months and to the dude who wants Vic Sage back as the Question…he’s dead and he’s not coming back – move on!

Honestly, I wasn’t as enamored with Rucka’s run on Detective as everyone else seems to be. I liked the art, but, as someone who knew nothing about the character going in, I found the series to be fairly confusing.
I wish Rucka all the best on his creator-owned gigs.
April 3rd, 2010 at 4:57 pm
There may not be any specific bad blood between DC and Rucka, but I have a feeling that he is walking because he is getting tired of having to jump through hoops to get his stories told the way he wants. I know he had issues when he was writing Wonder Woman and wasn’t able to do some of the things he wanted to do. More than likely he has been running into the same situation with Batwoman. So rather than continue to slam his head against the same brick wall, my guess is he just decided it wasn’t worth the effort and he’d rather tell the stories he wants to tell using his own characters.
Regardless of the true reason, it is really disappointing he won’t be writing the character any longer. That just makes yet another character I’ve been enjoying that I won’t be reading in the future due to creative team changes (Wonder Woman and Power Girl are two more examples in recent weeks).

Editorial bureaucracy aversion and building/renovating franchises that you own completely are two completely valid reasons for this change. Wanting to have job satisfaction, regardless of how much or how little money you might be making in that job, is also valid.
We’ll see how it goes.
April 3rd, 2010 at 6:29 pm
i’m just glad he’s going to work on a worthwhile book. queen and country kicks all kinds of tukas and was left with a bit of a cliff hanger.

How unique that it requires a “WHITE LIGHT” to make everything feel safe and good again. How conveniant. I mean after all,it’s not like Geoff Johns hasn’t offended anyone except maybe for the black community by making Jon Stewart say in a issue last year “All I have to do is stay black and die” Yeah,I mean it must be crazy to assume DC comics is racially insensative. Like having Jamie Reyes deal with only gang members since after all;latino’s only deal with gang members inbetween criminal activities.
Smart of DC to have a token member like Jim Lee to not arouse suspicion but yet keep milestone characters in limbo yet somewhat existant so Mcduffie can’t complain to much.
Maybe the execs at Time Warner should just throw caution to the wind and have sinestro read mein kampf since he is extouting the power of the white power.

This is teribble news!
The new DC power structures first job? Get rid of their best writer and the homo character in their main title.
Everyone knows that Geoff johns (and Alex Ross) are bigots. They didn’t want Obsidian ‘turned gay’ so they wouldn’t use him in JSA and didn’t want him used in Manhunter. I guess thats why Manhunter and Andreyko (despite amazing writing) are now COMPLETELY GONE (from #13) from DC.
‘We want Greg (Rucka) to write it, but he’s focusing on his career right now.’
Why couldn’t they let him bring it to Vertigo?
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:29 pm
You are wrong about Geoff Johns being a bigot. Geoff Johns is not a bigot, and is in fact very accepting of all individuals. Geoff has worked closely and been friends with both Phil Jimenez and Stephen Sadowski, both openly homosexual artists. Sling your ill-informed mud elsewhere, but the story has been explained by Sattler, Rucka, Johns and Williams, and Kate ISN’T being removed from the DCU, Rucka left the company.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Geoff John’s has become a huge douche. He was once grounded and generous. Now he’s a power-mad ass.
And considering his track record with female characters, he was likely no champion of Batwoman’s.
DC Comics – the number one comic company for Tea Baggers.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:59 pm
The reason Rucka is leaving is because he won’t have J.H. Williams III on the art duties anymore to cover up for his mediocre writing. Honestly, it was like having someone like Michaelangelo carve a statue of a turd.
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:42 pm
The comments in this thread depress the hell out of me.
April 3rd, 2010 at 9:11 pm
As I started reading the comments I was disheartened to see so many hadn’t discovered the amazing world of Queen & Country, but I eventually found a few fans.
I had similar sadness when he announced a few years ago that Q&C was going on hiatus, so I am excited to hear that Tara Chase will be returning the printed page.
I don’t know much about his Batwoman (I’m kind of superheroed out…but if you want to read his writing a strong female character, you can’t go wrong with Q&C.
April 3rd, 2010 at 10:03 pm
Example:
WIZARD: The last character I’m noticing on the cover of Justice Society of America #1 is Obsidian because you get a table of all these other characters you get to do in full, and all you get to draw for him is his floating eyes. Will you ever draw the full Obsidian?
ROSS: I have no idea. I don’t know that that would be the case. Obsidian being put into the JSA is a lot like him (GEOFF JOHNS) grabbing a character that’s just going to get MOLESTED further in other writer’s hands(MARC ANDREYKO). So he’s (GEOFF JOHNS)grabbing him(OBSIDIAN and putting him in the group so he at least can be shepherding this character that belongs in this association. Maybe he’ll make sure that no other writers get any “fun, creative” ideas with him.
April 3rd, 2010 at 10:26 pm
No NO NOOOO. Kate character is great, I don’t think any writer can continue her as she was thinked (for example, in Cry for Justice she was almost mutilated, thanks god that they decided to put her out of that series). Detective Comics was always the comic that I most expected! Bad Rucka! or DC! whomever is to blame T_T
April 3rd, 2010 at 10:53 pm
This Queen & Country and Stumptown fan was quite happy to hear this news too. Rucka’s been saying for years that he wanted to spend more time on his creator-owned projects (which imo have definitely been better than his DC works). He’s happy and we’ll get better work. A Win-Win.
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:09 pm
Y’know, I really hope this is a move on Rucka’s part to focus on his books, rather than DC pushing him out of Detective Comics.
April 4th, 2010 at 5:07 am
Faust, Ross was speaking for himself in that Wizard interview and later apologize for his idiocy.
He knows how he came across.
And to the shmo, that’s a movie/TV quote. Hell I heard an African American woman say it on an episode of The Mole.
So he’s quoting a previously used line.

AMSR:
Not really. His writing was so awesome that DC decided to give Morrison the conclusion to the plot-line that Rucka was leading up to? His writing was so awesome that DC decided to poach JH Williams III away from the title in order to do another project with a writer more on his level of talent? And his writing was so awesome that DC is letting him go without really trying to keep him on the title?
No. His writing is not that awesome.
April 4th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
I am just as sad about this as the rest of you. But I firmly beleive that dc will make up for this by bringing in a new writer to continue where Rucka left off. Now as of the question of who, well does the name Brian Azzarello mean anything to anybody?
April 4th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Um, I like Greg Rucka, but am I the only guy who didn’t like this book? I read some of these comments and you’d think it was the JFK assassination all over again. Good character, interesting art but…well, to me, it felt very trite. I think people like this book because the art is so surreal and the character is weird. That does not equal a great book. And, well, it only sells cause its DETECTIVE COMICS not BATWOMAN. Theres a difference.

Chuck Dixon presents “The Death of Batwoman.” With guest appearances – and funerals – for The Question, Obsidian, blue Starman and Scandal.
With art by Mike S. Miller and covers by Alex Ross.
2011. Bet on it.

Batwoman, Scmatwoman! I want to see Rucka at Marvel A.S.A.P!
If I could have one wish it would be Greg Rucka and Lee Weeks on Amazing Spider-Man now.
Spidey, Kingpin, Maggia, noir, crime-fighting, all crafted under Rucka, that is something to get excited about!

Yes! Queen & Country is back! It’s about time, too.
April 5th, 2010 at 9:33 am
Can’t believe all the people citing homophobia as a reason. DC probably has the most gay characters in mainstream comics, with a few (Batwoman, Question (Renee), Starman (Mikal) in prominent positions. God forbid Greg just decided to focus on his own creations like Queen and Country and his novels.
So quick to play the homophobia card when you no less then squat.
I’m really going to miss Greg at DC, he gave me so many good stories that I’ll continue to re-read (especially Checkmate). I hope to see him back with DC when he has more stories to tell.
April 5th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Didio, what did you do?!
April 5th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
I’m glad to see Rucka go (and I hope he stays away from Marvel & DC) and I hope DC keeps Batwo”MAN” out of comics! If DC were making any money off of Detective comics and the Batwoman run, you would have seen it in its on comic book long before now. Rave reviews from a few warped fan sites do not sales make. Thankfully, people still value comics for great characters and stories; Batwoman had neither.
April 6th, 2010 at 3:33 am
“God forbid Greg just decided to focus on his own creations”
Give me a break.
First off Greg’s run was meant to last 12 issues. Secondly, its been so popular (winnig a GLAAD award) that they were going to give Batwoman her own title. Which Rucka told us about!! Enter the new DC power structure. Now nothing. No 12 issues (only 7). No Batwoman title. No Rucka.
I think thats a little more than ‘squat’.
April 6th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
IDEA: Transexual Batman should be the next out to take her place.
Come on, DC can run the whole gamut with this one!
April 6th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
I really wonder if Rucka has those five other Batwoman scripts in the can?
April 12th, 2010 at 7:10 am
Unless DC put a new writer on te character and continue to have her star in Detective Comics I will no longer be buying ANY of their products. Because this bigoted bullshit is prt of a sickening homophobic trend at DC and if their going to treat Batwoman, their ONLY high profile gay character this way then I am done with those bigoted assholes
September 9th, 2010 at 8:34 am
There are several great writers at DC who can do her justice. She can be in the league or Gail Simone can take her into the Birds.
