Captain America prospectives are continuing to assemble — with a new face already having put in time as a Real American Hero.
The Hollywood Reporter has announced that director Joe Johnston has brought in a new face to the already large casting cal for Captain America: Channing Tatum, who has played soldiers in movies ranging from G.I. Joe to Dear John. This is in addition to the news that Keira Knightley, Alice Eva and Emily Blunt all jockeying for the role of Steve’s love interest (who Deadline is saying is Peggy Carter, while HR is saying Golden Girl Betsy Ross).
While it’s not like Tatum’s acting chops rocked viewers’ collective socks off during the surprisingly underwhelming G.I. Joe, but consider this — not only does he have the build for the role (unlike, say, John Krasinski), but Dear John’s numbers — which knocked out Avatar in its first week — makes Tatum a bankable hit. (Indeed, Deadline is heavily implying that this role is Tatum’s to lose.) What say you, Rama readers?

OK, I don’t know this guy or his work. That said, I’ve seen two picutres of him now, and both have him bare chested and looking incredibly sleazy… The pic of him over at AICN, holding a chicken for some reason, has prompted all kinds of “cock” jokes, naturally.
So the dude’s obviously in good shape, and it’s clear he wants the world to know it. Good for him. But I have yet to see anyone comment that he’s a good actor and would be able to keep up with the likes of Robert Downey and (hopefully) Edward Norton – y’know GOOD actors – in the same movie. In fact, the comments I’ve read all talk about how awful he is.
I know I’ve repeated this ad nauseum, but when you have excellent actors like Downey and Norton, guys who aren’t just a couple of 20-something pretty boy “actors” I want to know why Marvel isn’t looking at someone closer to those guys in age, acting ability and screen presence. I’ll say it yet again: Look no further than either Aaron Eckhart or Mark Valley. If Norton and Downey aren’t “too old” than neither are Eckhart or Valley. Also, those two guys have fans, thanks to TDK and Valley’s TV work, to help at the box office.
While either of those guys are ideal choices, I’d have happily taken John Krasinski (earlier rumored, then denied) over Channing Tatum. I also think that, possibly, Lost’s Josh Holloway would be a good choice (he’d need to bulk up, yes, but he’s already in really good shape himself). Christ, I think I’d even take wrestler John Cena over this Tatum guy.
In fact, I’d probably take either Carol Channing or Tatum O’Neal over Channing Tatum.

Oh, and to say Channing Tatum (why do I want to laugh out loud everytime I type that name?) has box office clout because Dear John knocked Avatar out of the #1 slot at the box office is ludicrous. How many weeks had Avatar been out at that point? Eight maybe? Um, Avatar’s finally falling to #2 was merely a case of attrition.. Everyone had seen it by then, many of them more than once.
How are those Dear John numbers looking compared to Avatar overall? I’m guessing not good, since Avatar was still at #7 last weekend (according to Rotten Tomatoes) and Dear John’s no longer in the top 10.
Anyhow, aside from his build, this guy doesn’t look a thing like Steve Rogers. He probably doesn’t have any business sharing a screen with Downey, Norton and Sam Jackson.

Not a good choice, IMO, but at least it won’t be Tatum:

Looking at the picture of Evans in the article makes me think Marvel is screwing the pooch with this choice… I gotta say I liked the idea of Krasinski much better.
I don’t see Evans holding his own with the aforementioned Downey, Norton and Jackson, but I hope I’m wrong.

i like Chaning Tatum because eventhough he has a bulky body, he can still dance so well `

Channing Tatum is one of my favorite actors. I loved the movies he did and has just done. I loved Dear John, I just saw The Eagle and thought it was awesome. I loved him in She’s The Man. That is one of my favorite movies. I have loved all of the movies that he has done. He has an amazingly gorgeous body. I love this picture, especially since he is showing his abs in this picture. He is an amazing actor, he has got awesome talent. I cannot wait to see what movie he does next.

However you slice it, The Eagle is hokum, but modern-day Scots may get a kick out of the film’s depiction of their ancestors as mud-caked hellions. Modern-day Romans will have to settle for less. -Matt Ronson
