[NOTE: Within the hour of this story breaking, the all-wise Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News refuted it, saying that he had direct contact with the head of Legendary pictures who himself said that they are not at this phase in the production yet. Stay tuned, readers.]
It was only two weeks ago that DC Entertainment first gave us signs that they were serious about doing a Superman movie right by bringing in Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight, to serve as a mentor to this other A-list DC property.
Well now another big piece of news courtesy of the oft-reliable LatinoReviews.com has broke that David Goyer (the Blade franchise, Batman Begins) to write the script for a new Superman film.
Having reviewed the bullet points of this alleged done deal, here are my immediate thoughts…
1. This is outstanding. Goyer has proven especially effective with DC’s properties in film and in the comics, so go with a proven talent.
2. The moment Warners went bold with “The Dark Knight” over a film title with “Batman” it, I really wanted to see the same for a Superman movie, so I love the idea of “The Man of Steel.”
3. I do feel bad for Brandon Routh in that he was one of the things they got right in Superman Returns. He’s still got it, as seen lately on NBC’s Chuck.
4. Nic Cage really could use the paycheck.
5. Not sorry to see Bryan Singer go, though I do hope it’s true that he’s getting another shot at the X-Men franchise.
Anything else stick out with you on this breaking news?

Goyer “outstanding?” Really?
He’s a guy that seemed to come up with a good final product so long as he was working with the Nolans, but all of his solo movie projects have been really quite terrible. I actually think Geoff Johns’ JSA was a lot stronger with him than without him.
He’s certainly someone who I think adds something to a collaboration but his solo work has left a whole lot to be desired.

I agree that Routh got the shaft… He wasn’t brilliant or anything, but then he had nothing to work with either. He was fine, but given his resemblence to Chris Reeve, and given what a turd Superman Returns was, I can understand starting from scratch.
Anyhow… Not sure how I feel about Goyer. Yes, he definitely did good work on the two recent Batman movies. No question, but he also had help from the Nolans. I LOVE the idea of Chris Nolan helping to reboot Supes. I think he’s smart enough and talented enough to know that Supes is not the same character as Batman and won’t necessarily take the same “dark and gritty” route with this project. Of course, I don’t think a Superman movie can get any darker than Returns was anyhow, so I think it’ll be fine.
With Chris Nolan’s involvement (will his brother be on board too?) I expect an intelligent, respectful take on the best elements of the character and his world. And hell, if it works, maybe Nolan can talk Christian Bale into a World’s Finest movie one day. Not sure if those two worlds would mesh, but it’s possible. I think Goyer’s track record is spotty on the whole, but with one or more Nolans this could be gold.
But I don’t want to see Nicholas Cage anywhere near this movie. I hope that suggestion was a joke. Jon Hamm, however, would make one helluva Superman.

I agree with ‘Matt D’. I think Goyer can come up with some good ideas, but needs help executing them.
Hopefully, WB and the Nolans will help him out.

Goyer? Yes, good choice.
Starting over from scratch? Yes, also a good choice. One of the things I found disappointing about the RETURNS is that it insisted on being part of the old Donner continuity.
Calling it THE MAN OF STEEL? No. The title conjures images of physical strength, which implies a punchy-fighty-explodey summer blockbuster and while it definitely should be that, the title should make you want more. I happen to prefer THE MAN OF TOMORROW, which would communicate a new, fresh start, optimism and an eye to the future, which are things that Superman should represent anyway.

Excuse me, Shaun, Jon Hamm is way too old to play Superman, okay? They should get a young, fresh-faced actor like Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers to do his own fresh spin on Clark Kent/The Man of Steel. He’s charming, handsome, dashing, hot, sexy, good-looking, gorgeous, big, athletic, strong, muscular, physical, mental, funny, goofy, awkward, zany, silly, nice, kind, friendly, and generous and sweet. In my words he’d make a heckuva Last Son Of Krypton, in my words. And he’s also good-mannered and a real gentleman. He also has a deep, booming, loud, commanding and heroic voice.
