According to Deadline.com, Warner Bros. has tapped Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan to have a sort of hands-on/godfather role in the upcoming Superman reboot to “ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground”.
There is doubt he would direct both the reboot and the next Batman flick, but knowing Nolan’s eye is being used on production gives me happy thoughts that touch all my nerdy parts just right. Nolan has handled superhero noir to 19th Century rival magicians, I think his voice of reason will be a grand addition to the Superman pot-luck that is slowly getting under way.
The article does like to mention the obvious differences between Superman and Batman, but notes that Superman in the comics has more of a darker edge in the past and how ”shortly after Dark Knight hit it big, fans assumed that Superman would be taken to the ‘dark’ side as well. That’s because Warner Bros mogul Jeff Robinov stressed post-Dark Knight that ‘we have to look at how to make these movies edgier’.”
I’m not sure if Nolan would make this production “edgier” by any means, but what do you think of this announcement, readers? Do you think Nolan’s hand and eye are what a Superman movie needs?
February 9th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
It’s a “wait and see” kinda thing for me. Nolan did well with the two Batman movies, but if it wasn’t for Ledger, I don’t think the second one would’ve been as well received. The story itself was kinda weak. Also, I have no desire to see an edgier Superman. That’s not who he is. That’s not to say Nolan will make him dark, but based on his Batman work and comments from Robinov, that may be what WB is trying to do.
February 9th, 2010 at 12:19 pm
Not sure how to respond to this. I love Nolan for all his films, but those movies all play to certain strengths he has as a director. It goes without saying that those themes/moods are not the same you would want with a Superman Movie (Get Spielberg or Howard on the phone!). The question now is can Nolan step outside his comfort zone with an equal degree of brilliance? I hope he can.
Also, I have to wonder if this will delay the next Batman film if his attention is divided.
Other than that, good news. Never hurts to have a lot of talent on the production team, I guess.
February 9th, 2010 at 12:30 pm
I suspect WB is keeping their eye as much on the cross-over movie option down the road as on each of these two franchises in and of themselves. Better for consistency’s sake if the showrunner on all three “product lines” – Superman, Batman, and “World’s Finest”(for want of a better label) – is the same person, perhaps?
February 9th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
Nolan + Superman = FAIL
February 9th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Great. This is just what we need. A guy with a complete and utter lack of imagination overseeing what could be one of DC’s coolest franchises. How does a man who doesn’t believe Batman should have bizarre, superpowered foes correlate well with Superman, whose foes, besides Lex, are ALL superpowered? Please don’t tell me we’re going to be stuck with a hip, edy version of Lex that purputes to be very smart and clever and scary, but just ends up as much a piece of merchandise as Ledger’s so-called ‘brilliant’ Joker was. Even that was just a Charles Manson ripoff.
February 9th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
WB needs to wise up and put the Superman script into the hands of Morrison and Johns. Superman isn’t dark and gritty. A “serious” Superman movie is boring. It should be a celebration of superheroics, science fiction, fantasy, and creativity. It’s an opportunity for romance, adventure, and spectacle.
Superman Returns bombed because it was boring and limited Superman to a guy who flies, cries, and fights Lex Luthor.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Ugh – hate to be pre-emptive but I REALLY don’t want to see a “dark” angsty Superman. I’d love to see an adaptation of the Brainiac story that ran in Action from Johns. Clean up the story to fit a film and get a flashier director.
Regardless, Superman should be colorful with a solid amount of action (and PG!). The shuttle scene in Returns was headed in the right direction. Warner really needs to start this franchise over without doing an origin story (maybe like Incredible Hulk where they recap in the credits) and with a different main villian (maybe with Luthor in a supporting role).
Ah well, I won’t hate until I see a final product.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
Look, as long as Morrison is on the same overview/godfather duties, I could care less. When they said that he and Johns would be working with the films too, I really hope that Morrison would be attached to Superman, if not Batman.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
Nolan took a dead franchise with Batman and made it awesome. He stayed true to the comics and used the best of the comics strengths to make two great action movies. Will he make Superman the exact same? I don’t think he will. The dark, realistic approach fits Batman, because he is a man who doesn’t have any super powers. If they had Mr. Freeze, or a “super powered villian” it would be retarded, it wouldn’t fit the Batman film universe that he set up.
I think Nolan will deliver a great Superman movie, that will stay true to the comics and yet have a feeling of it’s own. It won’t be the Dark Knight with Superman thrown in. In a few years we will all be raving about how awesome Nolan’ Superman is. I can’t wait.
I do agree though, Morrison would be a great writer.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
Someone pay Geoff Johns whatever he wants to write a script.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
Dark Knight’s story was ‘kinda weak’? Well, that still puts it above every single other super hero script ever made (except for maybe Superman 1). I don’t think Ledger didn’t push that movie over the billion dollar mark, the script did!
Anyway, anything is better than Bryan “I Love Making Boring Movies” Singer.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
I think there’s very much the potential for Nolan to do something with Superman that will blow everyone’s minds and conceptions of the character. Do you really just want to be spoon fed what you expect? What is it you really want from your entertainment anyway? Nolan’s a magician. Let him perform the trick before you start booing. The only real risk I can see is that the work will soar above a lot of the audience’s head, but I’m all for that. As a society we need to start rising up to meet levels instead of wallowing about waiting for things to drop on us in highly predictable ways. Lets not assume this is Dark Superman. Let’s hope this is an expression of Superman as unique and inventive as Batman Begins or The Prestige.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
I think someone like Peter Jackson should do Superman.
However, the main problem facing the Superman franchise is not necessarily that it’s not ‘edgy’ enough, it’s the feeling of “seen it before, show me something new.”
Superman Returns was almost a remake of the first movie. It was him versus Lex Luthor. Seen it four times. It’s time to mine Superman’s rogues gallery.
I want Brainiac. Johns showed us how creepy Brainiac can be. Imagine that version on the big screen. He’s perfect.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
I just want a movie that showcases the “Super” and lets him deal with bad guys he can hit.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
If Nolan can bring the level of realism he gave to the Batman franchise instead of just going dark and gritty for shock value, I’m all for it.
What makes Superman special is that it never even occurs to him that he could conquer the world with his powers, kill anyone who disagreed with him and have anything he wants instead of helping others and inspiring people to help each other out. A movie that showed the impact Superman’s appearance would have on the world would be amazing.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:30 pm
JJ Abrams. JJ Abrams JJ Abrams JJ Abrams.
Back a truck full of cash up to his house. Anything.
Can you imagine lens flare coming off of Superman’s heat vision?
February 9th, 2010 at 1:30 pm
I don’t like Superman, but I know a darker edge for the character isn’t the right direction I would pay to see after Returns… They should keep the character the way he’s in the comics, all that was missing in the movies was the ACTION.
He originated from Action Comics, so for all that Drama there should’ve been 3x the action. I’m not talking bare-knuckle fights with Darkseid but something along the lines of using his powers other than to see Lois Lan go up an elevator.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
How much worse can it be that Superman Returns?
The old super formula isn’t working ie…jokey or wimpy corn fed farmboy who cries for Lois.
Nolan might help bring in some decent actors that might want to work on Superman and directors might be interested in him.
Directing movies is not like writing comics either .Let’s get that straight. They can consult Johns or Morrison but ultimately money is involved here. Look at Johns writing for Samllville. Sorry. That does not cut it for what must be a huge film.
Let us see what Nolan can do after all he made Batman huge and stayed true to the comics..
February 9th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
This is the perfect time for nolan to look up kevin smith and do the doomsday script once and for all
February 9th, 2010 at 1:51 pm
I’m excited about this. I trust he’ll make the Luthor the arrogant crimelord that he’s supposed to be, and not the zany loser all the movies have made him out as.
February 9th, 2010 at 1:58 pm
Geoff Johns should write the script and J.J. Abrams should be the director!
February 9th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
good news
February 9th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
I just hope Nolan recognizes that Superman doesn’t need to be edgier. He just needs to be shown as “super” in both sensibilities and powers. Singer had the “super” sensibilities almost there with how moral the character was, but strayed into edgier and bad territory with his relationships. The strengths of Superman Returns were when Superman was both heroic and powerful.
Whoever guides the reboot needs to keep that in mind.
February 9th, 2010 at 2:05 pm
Very exciting news. I’m sure we won’t get another Superman movie with Lex trying to make money off mass destruction of property, or trying to kill Superman by drowning him with kryptonite, only to be saved by Lex’s gal pal. Am I talking about Superman I or the latest turd? Can’t really tell, but that’s my point. Let’s get someone with an original idea. Leave Lex out of this movie, bring on a Braniac and a physical enemy, and get the ball rolling towards a JLA movie.
February 9th, 2010 at 2:17 pm
I think Bytowner’s comment about them planning for a future crossover is on the money. That is probably the plan.
My thoughts are, why re-invent the wheel when you have a Superman that is already wildly succesful. End Smallville and pick up that mythology in the movies with Clark finally dawning the cape and tights. That would effectively reboot the Superman movie franchise and it would come with an audience built in.
I am sure many fanboys might not like that idea, but in the hands of a writer like Geoff Johns, who we know has a knack for weaving contradictory continuities together seamlessly, this could be outstanding, unpredictable, and Superman the way no one has seen him before.
February 9th, 2010 at 2:21 pm
Nolan is a great director but I was hoping that WB would give the movie to Zack Snyder. Oh well, still a great movie it will be. In Nolan I trust
February 9th, 2010 at 2:23 pm
Superman returns wasn’t the greatest superhero movie of all time.
However, it doesn’t deserve the loathing it gets from many here. They’re are plenty of movies that are a whole lot worse.
February 9th, 2010 at 2:23 pm
How about a JMS script, we haven’t seen his Superman yet but his Supreme Power definately showed what could be done. Not to mention he already has Hollywood cred. My vote would be JMS on script or Geoff Johns Brainiac arc as far as story, both could feed the ‘darker’ version but keep the characters as is.
February 9th, 2010 at 2:33 pm
Greetings to all!
well, I am not (wasn`t at all) a huge fan of Superman, but if they used the correct actor for Clark (Tom welling has the same impact Christopher Reeve had at his time) and mixing some modern to reto-fit concepts to the movies SM can be a huge blockbuster ever !
SM is as iconic as bats, so deserves the correct and respectful approach. I like the superman movies ( I, II and III) but hated IV and returns.
The logical is to “graduate” small ville to Superman: Man of Steel and start a new trilogy for instance. I am not saying that all the cast of the TV should/have to be in the movie, but let`s face it, they work.
February 9th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
I think Nolan is smart enough to know that he can not give Superman the same treatment he gave Batman in Begins and the Dark Knight.
The idea is not to make Superman “darker” but to make the world around him a little darker. Put him up against a real, physical, threat and not just Luthor for the millionth time. Put all that strength to good use, instead of just lifting heavy things into space ala Superman Returns.
He is not directing, he is just the “Godfather” of the project. This could be the best Superman movie yet.
February 9th, 2010 at 3:42 pm
He’ll have to sacrifice his realistic views & approach in order for his Superman to be good.
February 9th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
Well…I have mixed emotions and I agree with many that have posted prior to me – Superman is not a “dark” character. Never has been and I doubt could ever be. He’s the “boyscout”…so I have NO clue as to why Hollyweird wants to make this character “dark”? Make his villians dark – and GOD please leave Lex outta the mix. Damn! He’s been pimped more than I can think and he’s not a “challenge” to him – least physically wise. When someone sees a movie that has a main character that can fly, break stuff and all the other things that Superman can do…heaven knows we do NOT want to see a “romance” story. If that’s what WB thinks we want – they’re crazy! Its a superhero move for God’s sake. We want to see Superman do some crazy stuff (within the special effects budget permits). A “love story” is not the way to treat this character. I agree – Geoff Johns probably could write a descent script…not that I was overwhelmed with his JSA espisode on Smallville last Friday. But he understands the character and I think there would be a good balance of effects and story. I agree…Braniac SHOULD be the next villian or someone else…but heavens no…NOT LEX LUTHER!! NOT LEX LUTHER!! So, I guess we’ll see and keep our fingers crossed…
February 9th, 2010 at 4:13 pm
Why leave Lex out? I don’t understand that. Like it or not, he IS Superman’s archenemy. He’s the Cain to Superman’s Abel; Moriarty to Holmes; Joan Collins to Linda Evans, and so on. Bottom line, you CAN’T have a Superman movie without involving Lex Luthor in some way.
February 9th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
Not to get ahead of myself, but has *anyone* at Warners confirmed this yet?
February 9th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
I think Nolan can do it. Just because he made Batman “dark” doesn’t mean he’ll make superman dark. Nolan seems to be a person that cares and wants to respect the source material. He also is good at getting the most out of his actors (or at least from the films that I’ve seen from him). I say let him do his thing and then judge what comes from it when (if?) it comes out.
February 9th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
I agree with no Lex Luther – no anyone with kryptonite for that matter. As soon as you add to kryptonite to a superman story, he’s not superman anymore.
While I enjoyed his Batman movies I still think Burton had a better vision of how to adapt the comic. Nolan totally removed
Gotham from the equation in the Dark Knight (it was just Chicago with a different name – encountering Batman in dark gothic alleys would be a hell of a lot scarier than seeing him jogging across a well lit city street) and his attempts to make Batman more realistic make it hard to imagine him existing in a world of super beings (and where’s the fun in that).
Either way, could they make at least one superhero movie where the hero isn’t trying to quit crime fighting so he can be with some girl, getting real bored of that plot.
February 9th, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Superman Returns was the WORST movie. Ever.
Superman’s origin is pretty simple, but why was Superman II everybody’s fave? HE KICKED ASS.
Brainiac rips Kandor from the surface before Krypton explodes. Krypton goes boom. Rocket found by Kents. Clark discovers he’s not like everyone else. Fights for truth, justice, and the American way.
You can still have Luthor. Just let Lex set up the bad guys that fight him…like behind the scenes as Supes fights Parasite, Toyman, and eventually Brainiac. Reveal him at the end. Perfect setup for Movie 2. Luthor uses Brainiac’s Kandorian DNA to spawn Doomsday.
February 9th, 2010 at 5:17 pm
Batman IS dark. Superman IS light. If Nolan gets this, the movie will be fine. Ddidit64 had it right: villains should be as dark as midnight in a coal mine, providing the Big Blue Boy Scout a chance to truly be super.
By the way, I think Superman Returns was entertaining, but the Lois/Son of Superman/Stalker angle was painful and needs to be forgotten, much as the first run of Batman movies and Superman III and IV were forgotten.
And, I’m just checking here, is there anyone on the planet that would buy a ticket to a Superman movie who DOESN’T already know the origin story? Jump right into the plot, for gawdssake!
February 9th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
@ LEW The more Superman include Lex as the main villian, the more the francise will from Popeye syndrome (same old story, same old villian, same old solution)
February 9th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
*I meant the more the movies include Lex the francise will suffer from Popeye syndrome
I wish there’s an edit button
February 9th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
C. Nolan should also cast himself in the movie as a villain. Penguin would be PERFECT!
February 9th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
By Penguin, I meant in the Dark Knight sequel not Superman obviously.
February 9th, 2010 at 6:29 pm
Make Superman fun again. Uplifting. Exciting. Definitely – but i don’t think it has to be a COMPLETE reboot. Something more like Star Trek II would be fine. Keep Routh as Superman. Keep Perry White and Jimmy. Give us a new Lois, with physical villain, a challenge that will push him to his physical and emotional limits. Give him something to hit! And if you have to add Luthor – have him as the business man Luthor!
But give Routh a second chance. This guy has what it takes, he just needs better material!
February 9th, 2010 at 6:45 pm
I welcome Nolan to Superman, he might actually help make the film appeal to non-comic book fans. Which people here have forgotten are the minority.
February 9th, 2010 at 6:46 pm
Good choice to oversee. Reboot the whole gosh darn thing!!!!!!!!!!!! Reboot the heck out of it. Reboot all reboots. reboot star trek again!!! Reboot Mission Impossible, AGAIN!!! Reboot Superman again!!
February 9th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
I had always felt that whoever engineered the ‘son of Superman’ plot was totally unfamiliar with who Superman/Clark is. Clark was raised by the epitome of plain ol’ American folk. Just as the murder of the Waynes fueled Bruce’s vendetta against criminals, the Kents instilled into Clark a passion to help and protect people. If you ever grew up in a small neighborhood, you understand what I mean. Clark is the guy down the street who’ll gladly help you move the washer around the house.
If I followed the time table correctly in Superman Returns, it implied that Superman was physically intimate with Lois, then left on his In Search of Krypton voyage without telling her. Additionally, Lois must have married Jerry almost immediately after Superman ‘disappeared.’
First of all, Clark would not be intimate with Lois before marriage. He is a gentleman, and yes, a boy scout. Ma and Pa Kent would have hit the ceiling.
Superman would not leave on an extended trip without telling Lois anything. He truly loves Lois, and would not treat her so callously.
Lois would not dive into an marriage so quickly, in just a matter of months. She loves Superman, and I think she would have waited quite a while before giving up on him.
I can understand the dramatic effect of showing Clark’s human struggles, but it just didn’t ‘feel’ like him in the movie.
Additionally, his superfeats were downplayed. The air rescue at the beginning was superb, but everything fell flat afterwards. I thought of the scene in X-Men in which Magneto moves the Golden Gate Bridge. The shots of him ‘working’ were interspersed with shots of the entire bridge moving, which indicated a real sense of power.
Compare that to Superman lifting the ‘island’ toward the end. There was no sense of power. Why not have the camera circle the island, with familiar objects to establish the size, then zoom in and under to show Superman straining a bit? The island should have been wobbling. Even with Superman’s strength, I would think that it would be difficult to balance the island with only his two hands in contact with it.
Heroics! Yes! Hope! Yes! Triumph! Yes! And give him a villain that is truly a challenge for him, one that strength alone cannot overcome. Clark is very intelligent and creative.
February 9th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
I want to see Krypton.
Oh yeah, and can we please make him stop wearing those little red panties? Put him in the costume Wizard magazine proposed way back.
No origin story, unless it’s quick. We all know who Superman is.
Villains? Anybody but Lex. (He could have a supporting role, as long as he stayed serious.) Brainiac has the best name-recognition, along with Bizarro (who could be reconceived to resemble Ultraman, the Superman analogue from the “evil” universe of Earth 2). Darkseid might not work so well in film. If there has to be comedy, put in Mr. Myx….? (however it’s spelled)
February 9th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
I think you guys misunderstand what a “dark” Superman means. You can do a dark Superman story without making it Batman dark. Go ahead and ask any comic fan what were the best Superman stories it’s usually the darker ones like his death/return with Doomsday, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, What’s So Funny About Truth Justice and the American Way, Kingdom Come, etc.
In fact, I’d encourage them to do a dark Superman story, since doing lighter stories don’t seem to work now for some reason.
February 9th, 2010 at 7:39 pm
Pretty optimistic about this news. I think the reason that Superman Returns didn’t succeed in the box office is not necessarily that people wanted a darker Superman (witness Iron Man’s success) but that audience members, even those who liked the old films were largely ready for a brand new take, and instead got the older franchise redone. I think that with Nolan overseeing the films we’ll at least get a fresh take on the hero.
February 9th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
I say give the new movie something that the last one didn’t have – a GOOD SCRIPT without the creepy, stalker boy overtones, a better villain, and dialogue that doesn’t sound like a sad parody of the Chris Reeve films.
February 9th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
WOW!!!!!! AWSOME NEWS!!!! I WILL PUNCH ANYONE WHO SAYS IT ISNT….AS A DIEHARD BATMAN SUPERMAN FAN I WELCOME NOLAN!!!! WHOOOOOOO! YESSSSSS!!! THANK YOU WB!!!!
February 9th, 2010 at 9:13 pm
Everyone seems to be in agreement that Superman and Batman should have a basis for contrast and conflict (possibly to set up for “World’s Finest”) Aside from the Dark/Light difference, I think that the origin story really is needed to highlight the other levels of differences between the two. Superman is an immigrant story whose sense of duty is out of gratitude for the midwest kindness and comfort he received. Batman was a privilidged native son who is driven to duty out of pain. The “realistic” “edgy” approach would be of little help in a story that is made to cause us to hold our breath in wonder and believe that almost anything is possible once you see a man who can fly.
February 9th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
Lotta pissed of Marvel fanboys posting here LOL. This is GREAT news btw, what this franchise needs is a filmmaker with vision, not a studio hack.
February 9th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
Nolan + Superman = THRIVE
February 9th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
The next Batman movie should be a Batman/Superman movie. Dark Knight set things up so perfectly with Batman being wanted for murder and chased by the police at the end. Just imagine Superman showing up in Gotham and saying “You crossed the line. I’m taking you down.”
February 10th, 2010 at 12:06 am
let me say that it is hard to find someone who is more of a fan of Superman than me. Having said that, this is what I think should happen with a good Superman movie: it need to have a sense of amazement, when you see Superman fly into the sunset you should be able to smile and shed tears at the same time. You also need to make dark circumstances, which does not mean a dark Superman. It means that the light that Superman is should shine over those dark circumstances. One should be able to feel the innocence there is in his love for humankind as well as a sense of absolute determination as he flies into action to save those lives he cherishes so much. And then you should feel that he is Clark Kent above all, doing what he can cause he can, and that sense of humanity should be felt when he is with Lois and/or Ma and Pa Kent.
Then take all that and have him face a Lex Luthor that does not act like a clown (not that the actor should mean naything cause good actors have played the part, but think how good John Malkovich would be as Lex Luthor) and then take him into higher grpunds of fantasy and have him face Darkseid at the end of a potential trilogy.
February 10th, 2010 at 12:46 am
the problem with a superman movie is simple, WB must realize and present the character for what he a science fiction epic;period. Get Morrison and johns to contribute with the Nolans and a director who understands how to direct an epic. second get contributions from the creators of JLU animated to contribut as well, they have experience producing epic storylines for this character recently using all or most of his mythology. blow the character out as sci-fi myth and stop being cheap. has anyone at WB realized that matrix reloaded was ie…superman down right with action, scifi and a decent story…use the mythology from the characters history to produce epic scifi and again..stop being cheap.
February 10th, 2010 at 2:38 am
There’s only one Superman story worth telling and it involves the J.L.A. The one that should have been made instead of the last disaster.
The Death of Superman.
What you have now with the last movie is a continuity nightmare.
Another thought about a Superman related movie.
Frank Millers ‘Dark Night’ story where he and Sup’s square off for the finale.
Brilliant writing, exciting storyline…it had it all.
Why hasn’t it been adapted? On a personal choice for the elder Bruce Wayne…(fanboy wish)…Clint Eastwood! Think about it.
Compare that to the latest Superman movie and you will be forced to concede the truth.
Crap movies shouldn’t be made. Make something with a bang.
Make the ‘Dark Knight’ and the Death of Superman.
February 10th, 2010 at 8:55 am
I really didnt have a problem with how Bryan Singer made the superman returns film. The story was weak, but the direction was superb! I mean, that scene where superman rescues the plane is still my favorite scene of all time. I say, lets have Singer continue as director, and have a nicer story, like what everybody says…lets have an adaptation of the Johns brainiac story, or even an adaption of the DOOMSDAY animated movie, but please, no more lex luthor!
February 10th, 2010 at 10:52 am
I am excited by this and have faith that Nolan will make this work. In my view, the way to make this work is to have Superman mix it up with someone who can physically hold their own against him. Does anyone remember the fights he had with Darkseid in the Justice League cartoons? My favorite was the final battle, where Superman says that he usually has to hold back, but he can let go against Darkseid. He hit Darkseid so hard you could see shockwaves. That’s what people want to see. Having Superman get into a fight won’t make him dark.
There are villains out there for him to fight. How about having him fight Metallo? Doomsday would be another good villain. All it takes are some screenwriters who aren’t lazy sonsofbitches. Singer must have been channeling his inner Joel Schumacher in Superman Returns. Schumacher obviously loved the campy 1960’s Batman and patterned his movies after the series. Singer loved Superman: The Motion Picture. He kept everything that makes the character boring. Clark Kent is wimp. Lois is chain smoker who treats Clark like crap. Lex Luthor has a real estate scheme. Lex has a dumb bunny moll who fakes an accident to trap Superman. He even had Supes rescuing a plane. They just made it a space shuttle.
Hopefully they will cast a decent Lois Lane. Kate Bosworth was a complete failure. Cast Erica Durance from Smallville or someone in that mold. Pretty, smart and a woman who looks like she eats more than once a week.
A good Superman movie can be made, they just have to look at all the things that went wrong from Superman III to Superman Returns and hire a director who isn’t living in 1978.
February 10th, 2010 at 11:06 am
Why is everyone coming down so hard on Bryan Singer? I’ve liked every film he’s made, Superman in my opinion had some very strong and weak points… like every movie made. Everyone seems to love Avatar but take a closer look at the plot. All you’re working with is a rehash of a bad Disney flick i.e. Pocahontas
February 10th, 2010 at 11:31 am
Just give it up already. Superman is finished as a big box office draw in the film medium as long as the character remains the poster-child for superheroes. Superheroes are such a part of our pop-culture that people need to see the genre stretched and combined with something else.
X-Men= Freaks/Fugitives
Batman= Crime Noir
Green Lantern= space odyssey
Iron Man= Industrial weapons production
February 10th, 2010 at 3:08 pm
How to make the movie edgier? Simple, have a villain worthy of the lead character. make the movie edgier, not the character.
You have villains like Luthor, Parasite, Toyman and such to deal with. make them more diabolical. As much as people see Superman as the light of the world, or muscles in tights, make the villains more so. It’s even been said, Supes wasn’t a detective.
Superman is a multi-dimensional character.
Story – Have Luthor send Toyman after Supes, blowing everything in site up. Have Luthor create the Parasite. When Supes thinks he has beaten Toyman, here comes Parasite. Last but not least, put Bizarro in there as well.

Nolan referenced the Dick Donner Superman films as a vague guiding light to Batman Begins, so you’d like to think there’s a good foundation of interest there. With any luck Nolan will take a harder line at continuing the legacy of the character on film by deviating from the Donner history, rather than repeating it in the way Singer did.
You’d like to think Nolan’s influence will be much less specific to content in Batman, and more about finding the right people for the job, and maintaining a rigid focus on what’s appropriate to the character. That certainly seems to be what led to Begins and The Dark Knight; a sense for logic and respect of the material, rather than a penchant for things that are black.

Sometimes I dare think that it would take Disney studios to do a Superman movie. Wait…don´t laugh…See, Disney has always been good at creating characters that make us laugh, cry and smile…they are good at handling such emotions…and they`ve always been great at creating villains. In fact, I`d say that Disney already made an animated Superman movie: Hercules.
Hercules is sent from a higher race to Earth, he`s raised by farmers, his origin is revealed by his own birth father at a temple (very much like Superman: The movie when Jor-El reveals his origins to Clark at the Fortress of Solitude) and then he has to learn to embrace his great power in order to become a hero.
Then you have Megara, who happens to be a strong willed woman who falls for the heart of the hero…that`s Lois Lane.
Hades is very much like Luthor, even to the point that we even get to see he`s really bald when they blow off the flame he has for hair over his head.
And then you have Philoctetes, who happen to be a grumpy old guy who smokes cigars…

…that would be Perry White, of course…
oh…and you even have Hercules resurrect Megara at the end of the movie, bot he dives into a well of souls to do so instead of turning back time.

The world that superman lives should be complex and gritty, not the character.
