The Time-Traveler’s Wife: Who is Rip Hunter’s Mother?

February 6th, 2010
Author Russ Burlingame

With Warner Brothers’ The Time-Traveler’s Wife being released on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download on February 9 (good flick, by the way—check it out), I thought I’d take a little look at one of the nagging questions from the Johns/Katz/Jurgens run on Booster Gold: Who is Rip Hunter’s mother? As revealed in Booster Gold #1000000, Booster is (unbeknownst even to himself) the father of the enigmatic Time Master…but without a consistent romantic interest, fans have been left to speculate as to who Rip’s mother is—or if we’ll even ever see her.

UPDATED on February 9 to reflect changes seen in the Booster Gold #29 preview pages.

· Sondra Crain – Little is known about this character yet, even her name (although it appears in the preview pages for this week’s upcoming issue as “Sondra Crain”), but it’s clear from Michelle’s observation of the time screens at Vanishing Point that this woman is going to be very important.
Why not her? Well, she’s a new character, and there’s nothing much to suggest her as a candidate, besides the fact that she’s new, female and apparently important.

· Trixie Collins – Booster’s secretary through the first volume of the comic and the original Goldstar, Jurgens recently told The Gold Exchange that we won’t be seeing her anytime soon—but since there’s a following for the character among the hardcore Booster fans, and it seems from future solicitations that we’ll be short a girl in a Goldstar costume soon.
Why not her? Dan Jurgens told The Gold Exchange last month that there were no plans for Trixie in the immediate future.

· Blair Butler – A bigtime Booster Gold fan in real life, a woman named “Blair” has been Booster’s unseen date a few times lately.
Why not her? Rip doesn’t seem to care if they ever get around to their date. Seems like if there were destiny at play, he’d be more determined to see it happen.

· Fire – This relationship was teased a little bit in the Giffen/DeMatteis “I Can’t Believe it’s not the Justice League” arc of JLA: Classified, and there was a little bit of dipping their toes in the pool during The OMAC Project miniseries. It’s been mostly forgotten since then, but you never know what might happen. With a JLI mini coming up, and Guy back with Ice, these characters could have some hilarious double-dates.
Why not her? The relationship between the two really hasn’t been touched on at all in this title, and it seems likely that Rip’s mother will be human.

· Lady Chronos – She’s got a mean-on for Booster Gold and little is known about her; it’s not like superheroes haven’t been known to use sex and love to “turn” a villain before. Plus, Rick Remender has mentioned having long-term plans for a Booster/Chronos story and he was very focused on the Booster/Rip relationship in the arc he wrote.
Why not her? The relationship between the Chronos twins and Booster wasn’t dealt with in Jurgens’ or Johns’ runs on the title; Jurgens was, in fact, pretty dismissive of Chronos when the two appeared together.

· Wonder Woman – Hey, you never know! She’s functionally immortal, so she could have come across Michael at any point in his personal timeline. Also, he’s consistently had a crush on her (even if it’s just a tiny one) across both the Giffen/DeMatteis and Jurgens/Johns iterations of the character over the years.
Why not her? It’s pretty damned unlikely that Diana would give Booster a chance. Or that DC would let Jurgens and company do it.

· The girl from Booster Gold #20 – A female character who had a little sexual tension with Booster, and was created by Keith Giffen? Maybe. Also, Rip Hunter’s early adventures took place in the ‘60s (when they were written), and although as a time-traveler he could get around just fine, it’s possible that his first adventures happened in the ‘60s simply because he was getting old enough to have them.
Why not her? She’s not in current continuity, which makes her harder to position as a character who gets page-time…and besides that, Booster going back in time to knock boots with someone would probably be verboten under Rip’s current set of rules.

· Liri Lee – One of the Linear Men, and a time-traveler created by Jurgens, she’s been the subject of a lot of fan theories since the revelation that Rip is Booster’s kid.
Why not her? Comments made by the characters seem to suggest that when the Linear Men reappear, any surviving members of their team will be more at odds with Rip and Booster than on their team.

· Gladys – The rich, old lady who apparently took Booster as a trophy husband in the Formerly Known as the Justice League miniseries seems as likely a candidate as any, right? I mean—it’s his wife and all!
Why not her? First of all—menopause. I think she’s been referred to as being a senior citizen. Second—I don’t see even her existence as being in keeping with Jurgens’ approach to the character. If he didn’t use her so far, or get rid of her expressly, it seems like he’s just letting that story beat die quietly.

  1. Maddy Says:

    Psh. The answer’s Ted Kord.

  2. Cisco Kid Says:

It’s odd that this topic has hardly come up since the reveal that Booster will be Rip’s father. Could you tell me, with Dan leaving the title (and breaking my heart in the process) has Dan indicated – off the record – that he at least has/had a person in mind for Rip’s mother? Or was it a plot point that he preferred to leave to our imaginations?

  3. Kevin Huxford Says:

Jurgens plans on coming back to the book at some point, I believe. I think he said this would be more like Gail Simone leaving Birds of Prey than Gail Simone leaving Deadpool.

I kinda wish they hadn’t come out and revealed that Booster was Rip’s father. I’d have liked to see them get some more mileage out of the whole “is he/isn’t he” angle.

  4. BurningDoom Says:

It’s Aunt May. Anyone who read ASM last year knows she’s open for business.

@Cisco Kid – Dan has never indicated to me ON the record that there’s a specific plan in place for Booster’s mom. He’s made one or two off-the-record comments to me about things I ask and he can’t answer right away (one of which has something to do with one of these women; her relationship with Booster will be dealt with soon), but I tend not to ask him very much about Booster Gold off the record. I enjoy the book so much that I’d rather find it out every month with you folks, than be waiting for the other shoe to drop. Of course, that presupposes he even WOULD blow the secrets for me, which he probably wouldn’t. The guy’s a good soldier; when I got off-the-record confirmation of the upcoming BG creative team from another person in the industry (NOT Dan), and mentioned Keith and Marc’s connection to the title, Dan didn’t even respond to that e-mail. In other words: He wasn’t supposed to talk about it, and even once I KNEW THE ANSWER AND MENTIONED IT TO HIM IN CONVERSATION, he didn’t take the bait.

  6. Owen Says:

If the answer was Blair Butler that would be the awesomest thing ever.

Also, did we ever get confirmation on who the Black Beetle is? I feel like we didn’t but I kinda forget a couple of issues (I need to re-read those.)

  7. Squashua Says:

Could be Fire. Remember her demanding appearance at Booster’s “Planet Krypton” in “Kingdom Come”?

  8. Undead Says:

    @Owen

I think in one of Blue Bettle back ups the Black Beetle said he was a future version Jaime, though theres a pretty good chance he was lying.

  9. demoncat Says:

can not wait to find out since given how DC is about their heros having off spring. it should be interesting what lady was crazy enough to be romantic with Booster and produce Rip. though it could turn out to be some one not ever part of the booster gold universe at all. like fire or maybe some lady took a page and did what the female mist did in star man and just took a sperm sample of boosters to produce Rip. would not put it past Dc to okay the story like that

  10. comic_dude Says:

How about a member of the Legion of Superheroes?!!! ;-)

  11. js Says:

    Fire. Just a wild guess.

  12. Fin Germe Says:

if they keep it in the dc u I say kent and inza nelson are his parents(look at the color of the costume) and hid him in the future knowing what will come and as for the wife it really should be the ironic time traveling perdegaton’s mother

  13. Kevin Allen Says:

I actually like the idea of Fire getting together with Booster…just from their personalities, they seem like they would be an interesting fit, and I think Fire would be someone who would understand the whole “I have to lie to the world” thing Booster has going on. It would also explain why Rip seems so darn fire proof…the man is blown up so much and is always a-ok.

Of course, I am believe that Michelle and Ted are destined to end up together…

  14. Kevin Allen Says:

…forgot to mention that, of course, Dr. Tracy Simmons, Booster’s girlfriend from Justice League Unlimited, who I believe is the only person that could be Rip’s mother and have it make a ton of sense (a scientist who works with black hole tech at star labs…come on!).

She is my first pick, then Fire.

  15. Robt. Says:

You left out a strong possibility in Michelle Carter, Booster’s sister. No, I’m not suggesting that Michelle and Booster were up to something gross. But Michelle seems to have hooked up with some guy who she is stranded in Coast City with, in the current arc. It’s entirely possible that he is Rip’s dad, Michelle is the mom, and when she disappears in future issues, it will be to go have L’il Rip sometime else and pass him off to Future Booster to raise as his own.

Rip may not be aware of this, and think Booster is his real dad. Or, for that matter, he might know all about it, but still call Booster “Dad” since he wouold have been an adoptive father to Rip.

  16. Faust Says:

I like a few of those suggestions.

Fire, Lady Chronos or Liri Lee.

I don’t really remember Booster and Fire having many moments in The Omac Project, But I do remember his moments with Wonder Woman in that story, and really liked it. Not sexual mind you, just that she was the only one that wanted to help him.

  17. Vinnie Bartilucci Says:

Why has no one considered the concept that Rip could ever possibly be wrong?

Have we seen a single flashback/forward of Michael playing with his son?

Why couldn’t it have been Rond Vidar masquerading as Booster? Or Brainiac 5? Or someone else trying to make sure that Booster’s destiny as guardian of the timelines is preserved?

    Just sayin’.

  18. BLU Says:

Ted/Michelle as the biological parents with Booster as the father who raised Rip.

  19. PyroTwilight Says:

I think a new version of Kristin Wells would work. Her stories much like Boosters. She’s a teacher from the future who uses tech from her time to create “superpowers”. And according to Legion of Three Worlds she’s still in continuity to some degree. Perhaps in the new continuity she’ll meet Booster?

  20. comic_dude Says:

Of all your contenders, I think I would prefer Fire to be the mother the most though since it would give her some extra character development while allowing her the opportunity to appear more often in the Booster Gold book!! B-)

  21. Erin Says:

Gladys- Didn’t Jurgens say he could explain this joke away while still keeping the joke but not make Booster look bad in the process. Even if she’s not as old as they made her sound (or a time traveler) making her the mom does spoil the joke.

Fire: I never got any romantic vibes. Yes they had something very sudden at the end of ICBINTJL but it never really made in sense in the context. In Omac Project they didn’t seem close until she was injured, Red Rocket died and Booster was “going home.” Bea used to flirt with Ted and be annoyed with Booster. She doesn’t see to see past his facade and at Teds’ funeral Booster thought as her as someone who insulted them (Ted/him) and was pretty hurtful.

Liri Lee: Wasn’t she married to Matthew Ryder? I read Time and Again awhile ago but I think she is.

Lady Chronos: She has a history outlined in All New Atom. She’s not David Clintons’ twin, she’s an asian woman named Jia. A old sweetheart of Ryan Choi that ended up killing her jock husband, tried to use Ryans’ feelings for her to her advantage and it’s strongly implied that she’s using Chronos to gain enough power to run the timeline. Rick Remender wrote most of this in his run. But really Rips’ reaction to her tells me that she’s not the mother because if she was he won’t be pushing her away from Booster when she starts hitting on him.

  22. Lori Says:

I’m with Maddy. Ted Kord. Of course. It’s the DC magic ‘n’ super-science universe, who needs a womb?
