Young Justice League Animated Series on the Horizon?

February 2nd, 2010
Author Russ Burlingame

DC fans who have wondered for years if we’d ever see Young Justice again can take a little solace from this report on Rich Johnston’s Bleeding Cool site.

In a nutshell, actress Stephanie Lemelin blogged that she’s voicing Arrowette in an upcoming “Saturday morning cartoon” called Young Justice League. Along with an image of the character (seen here) that she claimed was concept art for the series, Lemelin said that “Due to the extreme popularity of this series, however, that’s about all I can say,” which apparently was more than she should have because the link provided in Johnston’s story leads nowhere, and there’s no mention of the entry or the series anywhere else on Lemelin’s blog. Bleeding Cool, of course, deals pretty regularly in gossip and off-the-record stuff, so they had the foresight to archive the material, probably knowing full well that it wouldn’t be allowed to stay online very long. A second, unattributed source told Johnston that the team will be made up of Arrowette, Martian Girl, Aqualad, Nightwing, Impulse, and Superboy/Kon-El.

Lemelin has some interesting projects coming up, according to IMDB, but what we’ve seen so far makes her a perfectly reasonable choice for an animated spin-off of a comic; she has experience in the direct-to-video Kung-Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five, based on the feature film starring Jack Black, and starred in several episodes of the Cavemen TV series based on the series of popular Geico commercials.

I read this earlier on BleedingCool. It seems that Warner Bros. would create another teen team with Robin/Nightwing on it so soon after Teen Titans wrapped.

If I had to guess, I’d say that Ms. Lemelin may have gotten her wires crossed, and that this isn’t a series at all, but an upcoming DVD feature.

  2. Russ Burlingame Says:

That’s a possibility, although the second source that Rich quotes seemed to be pretty convinced he knew what he was looking at, and I have a hard time imagining the poor girl getting all the way through the casting process without knowing what contract she was signing. That said, anything is always possible.

    nightwing aqualad and miss martian?

  4. Russ Burlingame Says:

@Ravager – WEll, it seems to be pretty much a series based on the children, clones or other “second generations” of established JL heroes. I’m only surprised that Wonder Girl didn’t beat out Arrowette…but who knows? Green Arrow has been established as a pretty popular and successful guest-star on SMALLVILLE so maybe that played a role.

There was a MB post somewhere where someone mentioned that at a recent executives meeting for Cartoon Network:

WB has 3 NEW series on their slate, Mystery INC- the new Scooby show, Young Justice, and Bruce Timms CG Green Lantern for 4Q 2011. ALL for Cartoon Network, who originally passed on the new Thundercats. Both Mattel and Hasbro got the series pitch and passed on the toys for couple different reasons. “Lack of cool tech” the big one. But Ban Dai did a hard core play for the rights. They weren’t interested in a “Classic” adult line, and thought that the new take on the series was something very different for the toy aisles. Which is what Mattel and Hasbro were afraid of.

It’s Sorta THE Young Justice. They will be going out with this BIG TIME at Comic Con. From what I saw, it’s Martian Girl, Aqualad, Nightwing, Impulse, Arrowette, and Connor Kent. The poster gives me the tone that it’s a cross between JLU and TT. I liked the look a lot. It’s not quite Timm-style, but it’s not All Murikami’d out like Teen Titans.”

Also, in the CBR thread linked above, there’s a link to a style sheet image of an African American Aqualad, along with an actor who read for that part.

Obviously all conjecture at this point, but it looks like this is for real.

  6. Brian Says:

If this is a reality, then I look forward to it. As for origins, I’m figuring that WB started putting this together after the DVD release of Next Avengers.

  7. Craig M. Says:

I’ll believe it when some kind of press release or something comes out. Same goes for the Green Lantern CG toon, new Scooby-Doo, and any new Thundercats project. I’m not gonna trust the second hand information of some guy on some message board that I don’t even know.

They may all turn out to be real and cool, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

  8. Shaun Says:

Ugh… Why couldn’t the JL/JLU series have continued instead?

  9. hguwj Says:

So is Mattel going to do the action figures for these? I can’t imagine them being any better than DCUC. But since its a “kids line” like Brave and the Bold, I’d expect the same quality of block-like figures with zero articulation.

  10. Russ Burlingame Says:

@Craig – It’s not news becuase of the random dude on a message board. It’s news because an actress who claims to have a signed contract to voice Arrowette posted it on her blog.

  11. hguwj Says:

About the CG Green Lantern Timm series posted earlier. Sounds like a fake rumor. The Scooby Doo series is supposed to debut THIS YEAR not in Q4 2011 according one of the lead people associated with the series, Derrik Wyatt. So that fact alone would probably debunk the rest of it. We know Young Justice is real. CG Green Lantern series sounds like some fanboy dreamed it up since the live action movie is hitting next year. What better way to spread a false rumor?

  12. uncuffed Says:

A CG Green Lantern series would definitely be a fanboy dream come true. I 100% agree that it’s not reality till we see some official confirmation but I will say this. I don’t think the fact that the live action movie is coming out is grounds for dismissing this as a fanboy dream. I cling to a bit of hope because CG or not, it is very common, as we’ve seen, to have an animated series coincide with the release of a movie. Almost all mainstream comic movies seem to get an animated series right around the same time. No reason GL should be any different. In fact as we all would probably agree, it’s perfect for it. Seems possible CG would be appealing as a new challenge for Timm and Co. Here’s hoping but again, lets hope for real confirmation!

  13. Kris Says:

It will be a great show because it’s confirmed that it is a series to release in the fall of this year on CN. Robin (Tim Drake) will be in it but i hope they add Nightwing in it too. That’d be an amazing show with Robin and Nightwing in it, or maybe they changed Robin to Dick Gayson in the show, still a lil fuzzy on that.
