Kevin Feige lets slip Hulk in Avengers film?

Will Hulk smash puny Avengers? One interview suggests he might!

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige spoke with SFX Magazine about the upcoming Avengers film, and SuperheroHype had an interesting excerpt from it all:

“My only concern is that when we launch a franchise–whichever character’s franchise that may be–it should stand on its own two feet… So by the time ‘The Avengers’ comes in 2012, it’s not just a team superhero movie with a bunch of characters with powers. It’s three people – four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury – who you’ve seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time.”

Now, that’s interesting to me for a couple of reasons — first and foremost, it makes me think that, yep, your favorite Jolly Green Giant will indeed be in the Avengers film (which would kind of have to be the case, or the Robert Downey Jr. cameo at the end of the last Hulk movie would look a little weird).

But the thing that concerns me about all this is the hesitance to get supporting characters in the film. Keep in mind we’ll be seeing Black Widow and War Machine in the upcoming Iron Man 2, and there are even rumors we might see Hawkeye in the upcoming Thor film. What does that mean for all involved? Characters such as Hawkeye, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are seen by many as the core Avengers group (along with the five Feige described earlier), and it’d be a shame not to add on to what the previous films did. Even the first X-Men movie had six characters, and that was including having to balance Magneto and the Brotherhood!

The rest of the interview talks about the “science” of Thor, as well as Feige’s desire to see a Marvel Cosmic movie. You better believe I’d love to see that last one. Check out the rest of it here.

I think you’re reading too much into his comments. In the full article, he merely seemed to be saying that they’re conscious of the negative effects of overstuffed superhero movies, where too many central characters invariably overcomplicate the story (see Spider-Man 3, Batman Forever, X-Men 3, etc.). There’s nothing in his comments to preclude supporting appearances by say, Black Widow or the Wasp in the Avengers film. Besides, I’d much rather have an initial Avengers film focus on Cap, Thor and Iron Man. Following Avengers history, subsequent films could reduce Iron and Thor to cameos and make room for Hawkeye, the Vision and the rest.

Does anyone know if Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are tied up with the X-Men rights at Fox? For that matter, what would a Marvel cosmic movie look like, minus all the concepts closely associated with Lee & Kirby’s FF? Who would the Kree fight? Who would passively watch it all happen?

I think the current Nova and/or Guardians of the Galaxy series would be perfect.

the way movie rights are sold you can’t have Quicksilver or the Witch as they were rented out under the Xmen franchise, and Ant Man is still in development, so no on him, and therefore no on the Wasp. I do think though that it should at least have the Widow so you have a female on the team and appearances even if they’re small by Hawkeye and War Machine would be awesome too.

One of the biggest questions with “The Avengers” is the still lingering question of mixing heightened reality-based heroes like Iron Man, Nick Fury, Hulk and Captain America with the outright mythological fantasy hero Thor.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would lead to a lawsuit from Fox. Magneto’s children? Yeah I’d say they have the rights to them. Especially considering they started in X-Men comics. Gotta be careful to not have too many characters. Hopefully the Black Widow will be a hit because Scarlet is signed for several films and they need a female Avenger.

I don’t think we’ll see, nor do we need, all those characters mentioned (Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man, etc.). It would unnecessarily clutter up an Avengers film, and would lead to an unsatisfying attempt to shoehorn those (IMO) 2nd tier characters in. Having to explain who they are, their origins, etc. Screw all that. Give me the core, A-list Avengers. I’m not a Thor fan, but I recognize he’s an A-lister and he’s going to be a part of it, so just make a good Thor movie please.

As for Hulk… Well, since the 2008 movie was a part of creating this shared Marvel movie universe I would hope he’d be a part of it. The big question is how he’ll fit into the film and whether or not Ed Norton will be involved. I hope he will, but I have my doubts. I really liked the 2008 movie, and I think it did reasonably well given all the competition that summer and the fact that had to go up against the public’s general disliking of the previous (Ang Lee) movie. Hulk needs to be there in some capacity.
