David Finch jumps to DC Comics

January 5th, 2010
Author David Pepose

When it comes to the Young Guns, it looks like Marvel has one less weapon in its arsenal, as the Source announced today that Ultimatum artist David Finch would be joining DC as an exclusive artist!

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the DC family!” Finch said on the blog. “It feels too good to be true that I’m going to have the chance to draw some of the most dynamic, iconic, and fun characters in the business. I’ve been a DC comics fan for a very long time, so it’s a very big honor to finally have a part in their creation.”

Now, headhunting artists isn’t a new thing in this business — heck, Marvel has been doing that to DC for years, snatching up people like Jason Aaron and Dale Eaglesham after they had gotten some good buzz with stuff like Scalped and JSA — but the thing that interests me the most is… I don’t think Finch has done a mainstream DC book outside of the Darkness/Batman special. (It took me awhile just to find the above Batman sketch, courtesy of Pulp Art!)

So it’s interesting to me that the jump to exclusive was made so quickly — but that said, look at what Finch has done the past few years. He was artist on Ultimatum, which was selling like hotcakes every month it printed; he was the opening artist on Brian Michael Bendis’s New Avengers run; he’s been doing covers for books like World War Hulk, Moon Knight, and Siege; and he’s been played up for years as the first wave of Marvel’s “Young Guns” Initiative. What say you? What book would you be excited to see Finch draw?

Get him on Batman asap. This is going to be awesome.

  2. Ken Says:

Personally, I’d like to see Finch on one of DC’s Earth One graphic novels. I only say this because, as we’ve seen in the past, Finch is a fairly slow artist. His work is amazing when the time is put into it, but when he’s in ‘rush-mode’, it can be rather messy looking. Either way, I’m just left wondering who Marvel will steal away from DC now that one of their “Young Guns” has jumped ship.

  3. Jason Says:

    Wild Dog!

  4. Ron C. Says:

Well, Batman would be an obvious 1st choice, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him on one of the JLA or JSA titles.

as much as i’d like to NOT be a fan of Finch’s work (seriously, for a sketch that well rendered, that Batman drawing has some major anatomy issues going on), i have to say that Finch does have a very distinct stlye that would fit very well on some books (Lobo, anyone?). we’ll just have to see what DC has in store for him…

  6. Mike Says:

I’m not a fan of the exclusive deal and DC seems to have sucked up a lot of artists maybe to the point that they have too many really good artists and not enough good projects to put them on…If this is what Finch wants then more power to him his Marvel work will be greatly missed. Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t he have an issue with being on time?

  7. serge0 Says:

a stint on batman and robin and later a mini or event

  8. Short Round Says:

I’d like to see him on JLA or Teen Titans…I’m sick to death of Batman I would hate to see him fall victim to the Batman trap…

  9. LightningBug Says:

No great loss for Marvel. In my opinion Finch’s stuff has been pretty stagnant for years and I’ve been avoiding titles he’s been drawing. Nonetheless I wish him well and I hope DC gets some good stuff out of him.

  10. Damien Says:

    Deathstoke’s “Titans”!

  11. jediortiz Says:

Finch has to have Danny Miki on inks! Might Danny go DC exclusive?

  12. Arf Arf a doggy! Says:

Hopefully he won’t write for himself, he’d be great on Batman with Dini.

  13. nillyville Says:

I think David Finch is probably if not the best, at least top three (Ivan Reis, Ethan Van Sciver). He will be phenomenal on Batman, altho (as he showed before) a team book would be truly amazing…stick him in for Bagley on JLA. It’ll become a best selling book over night.

  14. Crusader k Says:

I’m tempted to say “Superman” just cause he’s my fav’rit but what about a new Suicide Squad? Or maybe…something with a mystical bent? A new Dr. Fate ongoing?

I just read the Brave and the Bold GL/Fate team up. What an awesome issue. If it doesn’t give you a lump in your throat…!

  15. Tre Says:

I hope this doesn’t sound too fanboy-ish, but I still find him to be a Silvestri clone–not a bad template to draw from, to be sure, but I don’t find his style that interesting. However, I AM interested to see his sensibilities applied to the DCU.

  16. captainzero Says:

Finch will be a great addition to DC’s Bullpen.
    He does great stuff.
    Nice Batman.

  17. Luke Says:

Such an ungrateful traitor! Is there no such thing as company loyalty anymore? Marvel spent a lot of time, effort and publicity building him up and placing him on their most high profile projects and he just leave. Good riddance! The guy can’t draw feet and his women have humungous M.O.D.O.K-like heads!

  18. Goof Says:

Finch me some Starfire right quick!

  19. Geraldo Borges Says:

Lobo would be a great choice!!! But a revamp of New Gods or Justice League would be awesome too!

  20. Pariscub Says:

Hope they’ll be luckier than with the Kubert Bros exclusivity…

  21. Andy Says:

Id love to see Finch on JLA…heck…get a good run going on JLA like Morrison and Porter had…that would be pretty awesome..

  22. benjamin Says:

I’d love to see him on ‘Batman and Robin’, and ‘Green Arrow/Black Canary’.

  23. Mark Says:

Does it really matter whle DC is publishing so much dreck?
(and I’m not a DC hater, there are a few good things but lets face it …)

  24. Rev. O.J. Flow Says:

Seeing that he’s now available, I’d like to see Finch drawing the JLA book I keep hearing that Geoff Johns has up his sleeve. :)

I like Finch, but as many times as it seems like a new acquisition joins DC, they end up getting put on a Batman book (Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, for example). I imagine I’d get it, but that prospect doesn’t excite me half as much as a JLA book featuring Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and Firestorm.

  25. Josh Says:

    Send him to Wildstorm.

  26. WebHobbit Says:

Well this certainly sucks for Marvel.

    :-(

  27. U Stink Says:

He should have stayed with Marvel and became the artist on the upcoming Miracleman series! Neil Gaiman and David Finch together! That would have been so cool!!

  28. StevenArtist72 Says:

You know, if anyone could do an incredible Aquaman comic in the artistic sense… (finish thought for yourself ;D )

  29. Jim Says:

Been waiting for this news for years!!! He’s BORN to draw Batman, just check his Moon Knight run. I just hope he gets a good writer and good story worthy of his renditions.

  30. Chuck Says:

C’mon, people, don’t all say Batman! Think outside the box!

Doom Patrol, THUNDER Agents, Plastic Man, All-Star Squadron (in WW II setting), Outsiders, Challs and the Demon all come to mind.

  31. Omar Says:

….awesome….. I couldn’t think of a better fit. Finch and Batman!

  32. Cameron Says:

I would like to see him on a justice league book. batman would be cool as well or maybe even Green Lantern. I definately want to see him paired up with Geoff Johns on a project though!

  33. devilguy Says:

Batman and Robin!!!!!!! or maybe something completely new (if that’s even possible these days) Huntress ongoing!!

  34. bob Says:

i’d like to see him learn to draw the human face

  35. Kee Says:

Finch must do something with Lobo!

(Marvel should steal Ivan Reis!) Imagine this:

    Mark Millar/Ivan Reis, Ultimates 5.1!

    Nuff said!

  36. Biscuit Says:

i dont want to see him wasted like the Kuberts. they went from putting out great comics at Marvel to virtually nothing since they switched to DC a few years ago. neither finished there runs on Superman and Batman and other than covers there wasn’t much else at all especially considering how many years its been.

  37. Arthur Says:

Finch has a blog containing several kick ass batman drawings !
Here are the links to de drawings:

  38. nillyville Says:

OH my lord those pics…thanks Arthur…Finch was born to draw darknight.

  39. nillyville Says:

but he should stick to pencil sketches (no paints)…the first pic was the most impressive.

  40. LOBOCOMICS Says:

UGHHHH!!!! MARVEL LOSES ANOTHER ONE… FINCH IS GREAT… I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM ON STUFF LIKE:

BATMAN .. OBVIOUS ONE, A FAVORITE OF FINCH
JSA… JHONS BROUGHT THESE CHARACTHERS TO DATE ON THE STORY, FINCH WOULD DO SO ON THE ART
    - LOBO…. GREAT CHOICE…
    - JACK KIRBY`S FOURTH WORLD….

  41. Darrell C Says:

Sweet! I can’t wait to see his first project for DC.

  42. Matt Says:

so when faced with a completely blank slate for a new artist, the guy could be put on any book, the first thing everyone wants is for the guy to draw the most over-exposed character. are we just interested in seeing how his version of Batman compares to the 27,000 other artists who have drawn Batman? call me silly but seeing an artist put his stamp on a less exposed character is far more interesting.

  43. U_no Says:

I can see why people love him but I don’t consider it a major coup for DC. He hasn’t done that much interiors lately, from what I can remember. I do remember him on Moon Knight but that was a good while back.

Now if it was McNiven, I could see that as big or if they got Coipel again.

  44. Jfabs Says:

Dave is going to do some amazing work with DC. Can’t wait.

  45. Rock Says:

Please do Aquaman #1 or Nightwing #154

  46. joefriday Says:

i wouldn’t put him on a flagship title. IT’LL BE LATE!!! he cannot stick to a deadline.

  47. Skeptikal Says:

Ummm, I really like Finch too, but given his incredible slowness, I can’t imagine we’ll see anything but covers for a while. DC seems to be less tolerant of delayed books than Marvel lately, and Ultimatum was ridiculous for no more pages than it had. I remember being excited about the Kuberts too, and what did they do? a few short arcs between them and a slate of covers? I hope this one does better.

  48. Christopher Louderback Says:

Awesome Awesome Awesome! I have been waiting of this day! Finch is right up there with Michael Turner on my list! I cannot wait to see what he brings to DC. I just hope Didio gets him on some worthwile titles — I would love to see him on Batman, JLA or even Green Arrow.

  49. LightningBug Says:

Pretty big burn how that first Batman pic in Arthur’s post was drawn on Marvel stock.

“I can see why people love him but I don’t consider it a major coup for DC. He hasn’t done that much interiors lately, from what I can remember. I do remember him on Moon Knight but that was a good while back.

Now if it was McNiven, I could see that as big or if they got Coipel again.”

I don’t know if Ultimatum can be considered not doing “that much lately.” That was a pretty big book. And you are right. McNiven would be a huge coup for any publisher. For my money he’s the best in the business.

  50. tada Says:

Whatever happens, don’t let it turn into a Kubert brother debacle.

  51. Bamf27art Says:

As long as he can get back to not rendering so much, I would like to see him on maybe smaller characters first. Zatanna, Hawkman, and maybe Green Arrow or something that can really show off his perspective drawing ability. And then maybe end off with a Batman stand alone story where the story can actually match his dark style of penciling. I can’t stand it when the story and the artwork don’t compliment each other. No big name villains and hooplah, just a solid piece of work would be nice for a change. And give him plenty of time to finish it in, so he can try and take the next step, artistic wise.

Stay away from bright characters and stories!

  52. Zenstrive Says:

Put him on Batman and Robin. I know Grant wants him bad!

  53. Brandon Yates Says:

Dale Eaglesham has been drawing comics for a long time, for Marvel and DC. I don’t think it’s fair to say he was a primarily DC Comics artist who was headhunted by Marvel.

  54. Spartanrx Says:

Great news! Who would I like to see him draw? Just 3 words my friend…SHAZAM.. CAPTAIN MARVEL!

  55. Kieran Says:

I would rather see him in something like The Demon or a Vertigo title. This one would challenge him enough to improve his art …

  56. Christopher Says:

Perhaps the Outsiders. That book looks like it would suit his style, based on what I’ve seen of his work, and I bet he’d draw a mean Creeper!

  57. Mallfunction Says:

Well its not like he did a lot at Marvel.

I love David Finch his work but will it make me buy a DC comic outside the 3 i already buy ? Not a chance.

  58. Dade Says:

He is the Rob Liefeld, all cheese cake & no style. I’ll be glad to see him gone from Marvel. To never have to see him screw up and X-Book for a couple of years is great for me.

DC Fans expect more pouches and big guns.

  59. Ian Says:

I have to stand up for Finch here, when has he ever been slow?

He did the first five issues of Moon Knight all on time, he did Ultimate X-men all on time. I don’t know where this is coming from, the guy has never had a problem with lateness.

He’s always talked about Batman being his favorite, I’m sure that’s where he is going. Which is good because with Bagley, Reis, and Van Sciver that means DC now has 4 good artists.

  60. Lan Pitts Says:

He has a gritty style, so that matches Batman to a T. I don’t really see DC using him for something like Plastic Man or anything of that nature.

  61. K26dp Says:

Johns + Finch on Aquaman, please.

  62. Jack Byrd Says:

Finch rocks. He would be great drawing Green Lantern.

  63. frenchsteeler Says:

What about Mahnke on a Legion book ?
Finch’s best work is still Ascension in my opinion, and that was a while ago. He’s good, but not THAT good. Isn’t there an opportunity to have Middleton draw an ongoing ? (I know, he’s slow too)
And for the Bats fans, what about JHW III ?

  64. Tom Says:

This is cool!! I think Dave did some cool stuff at Marvel but he never really found a single character to make his mark on. I think Batman and Mr. Finch are a match made in comic book heaven. Get him on a Batman story pronto!!

  65. Vinnie Mac Says:

    I’m excited.

I can hear the sounds of thousands of Marvel fans crying.

    I love it.

    GL, Batman, JSA, or REBELS

    ALL DAY!!

  66. RonnyRon3000 Says:

    SUPERMAN/BATMAN.

  67. Mike Says:

    meh

  68. S-Prime Says:

Get him on Superman or JLA, stat!
