My theory about why this issue was so short is tied to the strange inclusion of that five-page backup story in GL #49. (Which I don't think was ever solicited. I think that issue was just supposed to be a standard GL comic spotlighting John on Xanshi.)

So why did we suddenly get a "tales of the Black Lantern Corps," which was not really supplemental but seemed ripped from the pages of BN itself? I bet that somebody was up against a deadline (Ivan?) they couldn't meet. Rather than ship anything late or suddenly have a backup artist in the main book, DC pulled that sequence with Mera and Atom (which sets up Deadman's arrival, which is otherwise a real surprise) and put it in the GL book with Jerry Ordway pencils. But I really think it was supposed to be in BN #6, which is where it belongs.

YAWN.... Wake me when DC actually does something worth reading again. Or at least when Didio finally leaves or is pushed out.

I don't mind the $3.99 for it. But we were paying the extra dollar for extra ads and not extra content. If this was a normal book it would have been 24 pages of content and 8 pages of ads. Instead we got double the ads for the same price. I really wish someone at DC explains this.

I suspect that this is more of a Johns thing, or an editorial control thing, than anything else. Giving us a standard, across-the-board price for books that haven't yet been scripted is a tough job, I suspect...and this way, as long as he kept it under 32 or so, Geoff can write scripts of whatever length the story dictates.

Just a guess, but it's one that makes sense...!

DC could charge $4.99 and people would still buy it...and be disappointed. What would really be significant is if people actually did what they said they were going to do when this whole $3.99 started, and not buy them.

Haven't Johns and DC said from the beginning that Blackest Night was going to have a big first issue then regular-size ones from the second issue onward?

I'm sure I remember something being said about that. But face it, an 'event' book these days will cost $3.99, just be glad DC doesn't charge extra for nearly every book, now, like Marvel.

Glad you pointed this out, Caleb. Question #1 for Dan DiDio next time should be, "How does Blackest Night fit with your stated policy of holding the line at $2.99 for regular-length books?"

I agree. The issue was great but I was disappointed at how short it was. Especially a third was a cover gallery for comics I don't intend to buy. Great cliffhanger but I wish we had more story before the break.
