Morrison’s Inspiration: Decoded?

December 9th, 2009
Author Troy Brownfield

The announcement regarding Grant Morrison’s “The Return of Bruce Wayne” promises plenty of action as Bruce Wayne fights his way through time. One wonders if Morrison might not have drawn at least a tiny bit of inspiration, if not from Elseworlds past, then perhaps from the mid-’90s “Legends of Batman” toy line from Kenner.

Viking Batman?

Viking Batman

Pirate Batman, you say?

Pirate Batman?

How about these guys?

Pirate Robin?

Pirate Joker?

Might this one fight witches?

Dark Rider Batman

Too bad he skipped Gladiator Batman . . .

“My name is Bruce Anthony Wayne. Son to murdered parents. Father to countless orphans. Member of the Justice League of America and loyal servant of the Lady Justice. And I will have my vengeance, in this event, or the next.”

    The last quote was perfect.

  2. Rev. O.J. Flow Says:

    ^^^ Likes this. :)

  3. saulres Says:

I thought on the last quote you were going in a different direction:

“My name is Bruce Anthony Wayne. You murdered my parents. Prepare to die.”

  4. Mr.Nil Says:

your not saying that Morrison is not original are you? Or that comics are just regurgitating the same stuff over and over?

    Bats Lives Always

  5. Ken Says:

Those were some seriously ugly and anatomically awkward figures.

  6. pogofan Says:

Here’s another theory, which seems more plausible to me, copied from the story about DC’s announcement.

    Evil Twin wrote:
To me this is very clearly Morrison’s take on the Prof. Nichols time travel stories and stuff like Jungle Batman and Batman Indian Chief. He’s been mining the 50s era extensively and trying to give those type of stories a modern spin, Batman II and Robin II being an example, and this fits right in.

  7. Ortiz Says:

Totally agree with glmax, that quote is too perfect, just great.

    Peace.

  8. Greg Says:

    What, no Village People Batman?

  9. Madame Rogue Says:

Didn’t Grant Morrison used to write Doctor Who comics?

  10. Charles Skaggs Says:

He wrote two Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) stories and one Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy), the latter with art by Bryan Hitch. You can get them in the DOCTOR WHO CLASSICS VOL. 3 trade paperback from IDW.

  11. Russ Burlingame Says:

I’m still hoping against hope that Booster’s special relationship with Bruce (pre-FC) will play a role here. I don’t see Batman tying nicely in with time travel unless another, chronally-talented, character is introduced.

  12. Mick Says:

Ugh, can we get a real Batman writer please?

  13. Christopher Says:

So, maybe there was some inspiration taken from the toy line, but was the original toy line itself totally random, or was it tied to something? Just goes to show how our capitalist society can market the bejeezus out of anything. Loved the quote at the end though.

  14. Troy Brownfield Says:

The line had a minor tie to “Elseworlds”; in fact, if you look closely at the lower left of the Dark Rider box above, you’ll see the Elseworlds sigil. Not all of the figures appeared in Elseworlds books; some were original concepts, and some were comic-accurate for the time (like Balent Catwoman, ponytailed Nightwing, KnightsEnd and KnightQuest Batman, etc.).

And while I don’t think that Morrison’s inspiration totally came from this (I was, obviously I think, being a bit tongue-in-cheek), he WAS photographed at around the same time for Wizard clutching two fistfuls of Kenner “Total Justice” figures. :D

  15. Kyle Rayner Says:

I hope this is as original an idea as Captain America: Rebirth.

  16. Daniel Seifer Says:

    My PARENTS are DEEEEeeeeeeeEEEEAAAAAAaaaaaaaAAAAADDD!

Still the best Batman comic I’ve ever read.

  17. humbleamong Says:

This is perfect. Morrison is the man. Blew my mind at work.

  18. Bruce D. Spruce Says:

My favorite figure is the Roadhouse Stripper Batman, with leather studded next choker and ball-gag.

  19. tivo Says:

yeah just like “killing” Batman and replacing him with his original sidekick was a rip off of Captain America killed and replaced with bucky morrison went and ripped off the way they are bringing Cap back in reborn….wow

  20. Kevin Huxford Says:

I loved the humor of the article…and that some people are taking it more seriously than intended.

For 100% serious theories, that one copied from EvilTwin seems good and lines up nicely with Grant’s previously stated intention of making all past stories fit into continuity.

  21. DJBlackOrko Says:

I’m just not a fan of Bruce getting involved in the cosmic or stuff like this. He’s a vigilante in a suit that punches bad guys. I’ve never bought into the Trinity as the DC Universe’s most important figures. Just because your book is a top seller doesn’t mean you’re cosmically important.

  22. Unit99 Says:

The sad thing is that I bought all of those figures as a young child…and still have them lol. RIP was the worst Big BATMAN event story line of this decade 00′s. For a guy who wrote Arkham Asylum…A TRUE MASTERPIECE! One would have thought RIP would have lived up to the height. Here is a suggestion…Make BATMAN wear his all black suit from Begins and Dark Knight moive..DEAR DC PLEASE TAKE THE UNDERWARE OFF OF BOTH BATMAN & SUPERMAN!!!!!! It is almost 2010…NOT FREAKING 1950!!! Marvel has updated most of their custumes…like taking the blue underware off of Wolverine (Excetp in issues where Wolverine is in the past)

  23. demoncat Says:

would not be surprised if grant got some of the ideas from the toys for after all he is mining old batman stories for his stuff why not the toys.which i liked the line for have the cat woman and penquin from that line.

  24. Androoo Says:

I loved that series of action figures!

  25. B Tutton Says:

I have most of these figures, though sadly not the Dark Rider Batman & horse. My favourite is/was the Ancient Egyptian Batman and Catwoman two-pack figures. The Simon Bisely designed Batmobile is pretty epic as well.

  26. Kevin Huxford Says:

Arkham Asylum is overrated. Batman is written out of character before he even steps in Arkham to have that as an excuse. But he does basically make the Asylum into its own character, so that is good.

Just like the idea of finding a way to make all past Batman stories part of continuity is great, even if the execution was uneven. One of the reasons I’ll ALWAYS give Grant Morrison stories a chance is because you can never accuse him of just mailing it in. He comes up with interesting concepts and takes chances.

  27. Evan Meadow Says:

Yeah I’ve got pretty much all of these figures as well.

  28. Brian Knippenberg Says:

I was thinking more inspiration from the Batman comics of the 50′s and such. Professor Nichols and the trips through time, anyone?

  29. Brian Knippenberg Says:

Also, time-lost Bruce already made an appearance in Batman R.I.P. in a portrait of his “ancestor” ‘Mordecai’ Wayne. Looks like Bruce and fits the mold of the “witchhunter/Puritan adventurer” Morrison mentions in the USAToday interview.

The name Mordecai also has many different meanings, among them…”Little Boy” (Persian) and “Warrior” (Hebrew).

  30. Gustavo from Argentine Says:

The story arc is the same that the argentine`s comic clasic El Eternauta from Hector G. Oesterheld and Solano Lopez.
    Its`very similar.

  31. Eric Says:

Gladiator Batman would actually be a cool story. You know, relatively speaking.

  32. Kirth Says:

    MAKE. IT. STOP.

  33. Kirth Says:

    ..

    I STILL think it’s ODD that a middle-aged man is living with a teen-age cave-boy.

Perhaps it’s as loving and healthy a relationship as the ones he’s had with the various “Robins” over the years.

    …wait a minute.

    ..

And I already KNOW, Troy, you won’t allow this to be posted.

  34. grant the hack Says:

grant morrison messed up final crisis as batman. batman r.i.p was awful.

  35. grant the hack Says:

I was surprised that Batman and Robin is a good book.

  36. wil Says:

oh god i actually had the “dark rider” batman…and his horse. I wonder if i can find it…i coulda sworn there was an Egyptian themed batman i had too…with matching cleopatra catwoman….no joke.

  37. hguwj Says:

Nice finds. These are all Kenner releases it seems. Just don’t give Mattel any ideas to overproduce Batman variants many of them redundant and not as intricate as these. They’ve already done 4 in DC Universe Classics and more could be in the pipeline.

  38. Nathanael Skyles Says:

I appreciate for this perfect topic and narrative of current interrogation. You’ve laid it out better than any discussion I have seen. Also thx for citing my text on it. Your’s takes it way increased.
