Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl oh my!

November 28th, 2009
Author Lan Pitts

Entertainment Weekly has posted pictures for the upcoming “Absolute Justice” episodes in Smallville showing Hawkman (Michael Shanks), Dr. Fate (Brent Stait), and Stargirl (Britt Irvin).

Now, I really dig the Dr. Fate costume. It’s a pretty great translation. I mean you KNOW that is supposed to be Fate. Stargirl’s is pretty cool, too, but words escape me so I could properly articulate how happy this just made me.

So, what do you readers think? On a scale of 1-10, what would you rate the costumes?

  1. awesomenaut Says:

Stargirl’s mask looks just terrible. Fate’s really good but the helmet looks plastic and Wal-Marty. Hawk is awesome. Let’s just hope tv magic makes it all look better.

  2. Rodney Rodis Says:

i like it. stargirl’s mask kinda bothers me it’s too much of a fivehead. i think she should have a domino mask. then again, lighting in a photo is different than lighting in scene.

  3. Ravager Says:

i give an 8 to hawkman
    a 9 to Fate
but a 5 to stargirl, it looks a lot like a cosplay and the mask is awful

  4. Rod Lee Says:

Sweet. Green Arrow in a fight with Hawkman? Too nice. I think Hawkman’s wings should have been gray. Other than that nice outfits!

  5. chrs24 Says:

AWESOME. Bring on the blue and red jumpsuit for Clark in that Dr Fate type of style.
Imagine the “S” on that type of stylized suit, it would be perfect. Congrats to Geoff Johns for breathing new life into Smallville.

  6. Margaret Says:

Wow, man, I didn’t think they’d be able to pull off Hawkman at all, he’s so over the top, but it works!

  7. ostrakos Says:

I’m not really diggin’ Courtney’s mask, but other than that they look pretty good.

  8. 0157h7 Says:

I kind of like it and kind of don’t. I appreciate the effort to keep it true to source but it also looks kind of generic. Probably because it is for tv and not a movie.

  9. Preston Says:

I kind of dig them. On the one hand, they have that realistic and almost militaristic Dark Knight-like look, especially Dr. Fate’s. On the other hand, they also have that too realistic feel, where you know that a superhero can’t look as good in real life as they do in the comics, like a con-goer who dresses up, which is what I’m getting from Stargirl’s costume. That actually isn’t a bad thing, and fits in with the Smallville theme of realism, and it looks amusing anyways. 8/10.

  10. aaron Says:

They all look ok. I would probably give them all a 8 out of 10.

The blackness of Hawkmans wings make them look a lil fake (may look better in action).

Dr.Fate looks fine overall but cant tell if his eyes are glowing or if they are covered up.

Stargirl looks like Stargirl, just the mask looks like one you would get a halloween store. I think they probably could have done better on the mask.

But all in all this is probably the best that can be done translating these heroes into live action on a tv budget.

  11. Eric Sean Says:

I have the same problem with Stargirl’s mask as the others but beyond that I’m pretty stoked!

  12. CaptainXenu Says:

I really like the costumes. Here’s hoping that Alan Scott is close to the source material as well. They already have his ring looking dead on, so it’s only a matter of time to see.

  13. Simon DelMonte Says:

    5. They look lame. Are they going out of their way to make old school heroes look old fashioned, as opposed to the hipsters of the JLA?

  14. WILL MCMILLAN Says:

Let’s hope they give Smallville a rest at the end of this season and move on to a spin-off series either Young Justice or Watchtower with Oliver and Chloe as the stars so they can begin showcasing all the wonderful DC characters they have introduced over the last few seasons and get away from the “blue blur” thing . Clark and Lois can pop in from time to time but I like to see more of the Legion, Zatanna, Black Canary, Impulse, and the rest. This episode with the Justice Society is a primary example of what this series could really evolve into.

  15. Pat Says:

I think the Hawkman costume is WICKED. But I wonder how MS kept from knocking everything (and everyone) over with those wings, since they weren’t CG’d. He definitely earned his keep with that gear. I can’t wait to see the show!

  16. JSo Says:

I actually dont like the Fate costume. It’s too rubbery looking for my taste, and if anything, he’s one who doesn’t need armor at all.
    Fate-5
Stargirl-7 (would rate highter if I could see what she’s wearing from the waist down.
    Hawkman-8 Looking better than before…!

  17. chris mata Says:

I am feeling an 8.5 outta ten. Stargirls costume and hawkmans wings really are my only hangups.
Fates helmet could be construed as walmarty but I think its cool. I am not gonna lie GJ kinda irks me at times in print but his smallville is very nice.

  18. EndlessKng Says:

Agree with everone on the Stargirl mask. But Hawkman is rocking my socks. And love how he’s fighting GA.

And Fate – I mean, he was who I was most worried about, but they’ve got him looking good.
Now I want to see Alan Scott’s outfit…

  19. Anxy Says:

Hawkman – 8 flirting with a 9 or a 10 if the wings were fuller. The rest of the costume is fantastic.

Dr. Fate – Strong 7. It’s faithful, and oh my WOW I want that helmet. But I’m interested to see how a costume like this will blend with the world of Smallville.

Stargirl – 4? 5? Definitely the weakest link here. The mask is weird and loafy, and the costume looks like someone just gave up. I’m not quite sure why Stargirl is one of the featured characters to begin with, so maybe I’m biased.

  20. Rich Says:

The costumes look really good. I’m interested to see how this JSA will fit into the Smallville universe. Unless they are a very secret organization (very unlike the DCU) You would think they would have been somewhat oif role models for Clark, Ollie, and the other super characters we have seen in Smallville. On the contrary, the show has made costumes rather unusual.

  21. Crimsonrain Says:

Hawkman- you know IMO…this picture looks way better than that other one that they showed that looked more like a plastic model standing in front of a painting of a computer lab. Someone mentioned CGI and Anxy mentioned fuller wings. Is it possible that when he’s just standing around and whatnot that the wings look like this but then they do like they did with that dude (lol..I don’t know most of my x-men)in the last X-Men movie and when he spreads his wings for flight they end up becoming huge?

    Dr Fate- Looks pretty cool.

Star Girl- Agrees with the mask but the rest of the costume looks pretty good.

I guess looking at these I’m just happy that they are finally making an attempt to get the actual costumes. I recall with the X-Men that they went with what they had because to do anything close to the comic they said they just couldn’t do it without it looking tacky.

  22. SouthtownKid Says:

I think the costumes look great as-is, but like a lot of things, will actually look better in motion than in a static screenshot.

  23. hguwj Says:

    Oh God…Please MAKE IT STOOOOP..PLEASE?

  24. ironchefharpo Says:

Dr. Fate! I’m actually looking at a TV still of my favorite superhero of all time! The JSA are coming to television! My favorite superhero team! It’s time you guys who think you’re too cool for masks and capes and tights bow down before the old school DC heroes. You are not worthy.

  25. Fielding Says:

Hawkman and Fate look fantastic. I’m a bit doubtful about Stargirl but her posture and facial expression in that shot aren’t the most complimentary. I’ll wait to see her in action.

  26. irv Says:

everyone’s mentioning stargirl’s (i think of her as courtney too, ostrakos) mask and no one’s mentioning her cosmic staff. it looks like a floor lamp. seriously.

  27. Russ Says:

The costumes look great, it’s the lighting that sucks. It’s obvious that the lighting is set lighting for filming and not the person taking still pictures. Reminds me of how Michael Keaton looked in 1988 when I saw the first pics of the black batsuit in regular lighting. Aside from Stargirl’s horrible mask the only thing I would change is make the stylized design on Fate’s suit magical symbols instead of seams like dark knight armor. And change the amulet so it looks less like Speedy Gonzales’ sombrero stuck to his chest.

  28. Russ Says:

holy crap I didn’t even see the staff it does look horrible

  29. Ed Says:

Stargirl’s costume could be improved immeasurably with the addition of a blue leather jacket (not exactly nonexistent, I’ve seen them in the “civilian” world) with the star elements added, and just cut down the mask’s forehead and widen the eyeholes out.

  30. Patrick Mattauch Says:

I like ‘em. This is the first time I can recall anyone on Smallville wearing traditional type super hero costumes. They are easily recognizable from the comic books, so it works for me!

  31. samfish Says:

Hmm…I like Hawkman. In spite of it being so close to the Hawkman we all know and recognize, it seems like it meshes well with the general Smallville art direction and cinematography.

I’m not so thrilled with Dr. Fate and Stargirl, though. Dr. Fate looks like he’s wearing rubber armor, like in the original Batman movies. I’d rather have seen them change it up and give him something more…mystic looking and mysterious.
As for Stargirl…ugh. It looks like she’s wearing special made workout clothing. It should at least be leather like what Oliver wears. The mask looks like a lump of plastic, too.
Basically, they look like cosplay outfits, rather than what I’d expect a costume to looks like in Smallville.

  32. Bill Reed Says:

I think they look eight kinds of terrible.

  33. Andrew Says:

Bloody hell, I’m sold! Dr. Fate on a life action series? Brilliant! As other posters have said… for a TV series, it’s not bad.

    Hawkman 8
    Dr. Fate 9
    Stargirl 8

  34. Brian Says:

Judging from just the stills I would not rate the costumes very high. Agree with much of the critiques on Fate’s helmet, Hawkman’s wings, and Courtney’s mask and cosmic staff. Let’s hope TV magic improves the look and feel. Although, I am happy to see them make an attempt at creating the look and feel of the characters’ original costumes.

  35. Pat Says:

I’d rate them pretty dang low, because superhero costumes, as a general rule, look absolutely ridiculous, ugly, gaudy, and above (worst of) all FAKE on film. It’s strange to me that the Smallville team seems so clueless about this as relates to the JSA, since they did Green Arrow about as well as he can probably be done on film.

  36. Str0ngWa11 Says:

Stargirl is a tragedy. Hopefully, she won’t bee too prominent in the story. Fate and Hawkman look great.

  37. darrell_d Says:

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
That is the funniest thing I have seen since the Legend of the Superheroes from the 70s. Oh, I have to watch this trainwreck now.

  38. Jason Alan Says:

Hawkman and Dr. Fate look awesome, but Stargirl’s costume is just horrible. They certainly could have done a better job than THAT.

  39. Temple Owl Says:

FATE- Look at the size of Fate’s head… That is horrible. Also, if they are going to go with these style outfits, they need to go with skinnier actors. Fate looks bloated. They need to add some subtle shoulder pads under the uniform to balance out the size of the helmet and the fact that the bulk of the armor makes the actor look heavy. They are on the right track, they just need to work on the proportions…

STAR GIRL- That staff is horrendous. It looks like one of those lights you would get at Disney World. The costume is pretty faithful but I’m afraid it doesn’t translate well to T.V. The mask is too bulky for the face…

HAWKMAN- The headgear is outstanding!!! This would seem so hard to pull off for T.V., and yet the one thing that would seem the hardest is really done the best. The wings look decent. The actor has no arm definition at all. He has the right face, but his arms are weak. They don’t need a bulky body builder but they do need someone with definition…

All in all, given the flaws, how cool to see this on T.V…

I would love to see a spinoff of this rather than the JLA…

They just need to refine the costumes a bit more… But it is outstanding for once to see a producer go out of their way to stay faithful to the source material!!!

  40. Shaun Says:

Stargirl, while probably a really cute lady, looks ridiculous… That mask is what, about six inches thick? Her whole costume looks like a bad Halloween getup. Actually, ALL of these costumes do. But hers is the worst by far. She gets a “1″ on Lan’s scale.

Dr. Fate… Props for using him, and it looks accurate, but it still looks cheesy. The plastic six-pack, the dishwashing gloves, etc. He doesn’t look intimidating at all… Just another cosplay guy at a sci-fi//comic con. Maybe it’ll work better in the actual movie. Maybe a 4 or 5?

Hawkman looks OK I guess. The wings could be bigger and better. The dude playing him needs to be more muscular too. He gets a 7 or maybe 8.

I’m actually moderately interested in this, and I’m not a Smallville fan. I’ve asked this elsewhere, and I’ll ask it again: Isn’t this show supposed to be about Clark Kent growing up to be Superman? Is he even in this movie?

Finally… Kevin Melrose over that CBR mentioned it first, but it sure looks like Hawkman’s junk is resting on the table. Maybe that “tension” between him and GA is of a different sort? YIKES!!

  41. JawaFather Says:

Dr. Fate looks fantastic. Stargirl is alright. The best part of the Hawkman shot is him choking out Bizarro Green Arrow :)

  42. klaatu Says:

Come on guys! I can’t believe the number of people giving prop to these horrible, horrible costumes!

Dr Fate is the absolute WORST! He´s someone who´s involved with the magic arts, he shoudn’t have this Dark Knight-esque costume, with leather and sixpacks and whatnot. His cape, which in the comics is kinda Dracula-ish and gives the whole mysterious feel, isn´t even present here! And don´t even get me started on his plastic cosplay helmet, that was the easiest part to nail down, but they ruined it…Ack..

I mean, I can´t believe how many people are praising this thing, Superman costume from Superman Returns (which WAS meh, but kinda accurate) got a lot more heat than this pair of convention-goers up there.

Hawkman is the only one who looks good. period.

  43. klaatu Says:

    oh and Dr Fate’s jockstrap…yyeahhh…blarph

  44. bigbandit Says:

Not bad at all. I like what I see, and like that the powers-that-be are making a bigger effort to get these characters right.

  45. Ryan Says:

I was really excited about this episode, but these pics look so awful! The quick glimps of Fate in the trailer looked much better, which gives me hope that it will all look better on screen. But I mean, c’mon … you can see the molding seam on Hawkman’s plastic mace.

Let’s hope they look better in film lighting and with SFX around them, because these pics are a huge letdown. Granted, they look exactly like their comic book counterparts, but this just proves you can’t always have a literal translation. What looks good on page might look silly on screen.

And to all the Smallville bashers who have spent years complaining that the show changes the costumes too much … don’t you dare complain about these costumes. This is what YOU wanted. Eat your words!

  46. Dryl Says:

    Hilarious!

  47. Brother Unit No 4 Says:

Stargirl really doesn’t make it work.

I’m not too worried about Hawkman’s wings considering they’re Nth Metal – not REAL feathers. For a moment I thought Fate was awesome, then I realized that he indeed did look too bulky. It doesn’t make much sense for his costume to have that armored look from the Batman films.

Basically, with the exception of Hawkman everything else looks cheap.

  48. RMC Says:

Great in principle but… cheap-looking. No one’s fault I’m sure, effects-heavy shows have budget constraints. I just hope they light it so as to maximise whatever drama they can wring from it.

I think they should have gone for a cheerleader-style approach to make sense of Stargirl. Fate looks too armoured, the helmet and cloak should have been enough to sell him.

Hawkman looks a little silly. It’s the wings. They don’t look alive.

See how it looks in action.

  49. smalltropolis Says:

hmmmm, is this real, or are you kidding with us?
I hope this is some gag real for the DVD…!

  50. Brian Says:

I have seen better fan-boy costumes at comic-cons

  51. Eric Says:

I like all of these costumes, including Stargirl’s mask. Maybe because I don’t expect perfect costume translations from comics to film.

  52. Roland Says:

What I feel about this is that Stargirl is just starting out and could buy she made it all herself. Again the staff will look better on screen but it is like a floor lamp I totally see that. I think Fate gets 9 1/2 but the costume could be slightly more metallic. Hawkman is perfect. Michael Shanks is perfect. don’t care about the body definition. After all its not Ed Benes here. this is real life. I’ll buy this version of JSA. I just hope we get to see some full on GL and Sand and not just some 2second cameos.

  53. babs/batgRRRl4ever Says:

I can’t believe it, DCU heroes FINALLY wearing their ACTUAL superhero outfits on Smallville??!!?? The first I think was Zatanna who looked exactly right, unlike the terrible rendition they did for Black Canary, and the prior ‘real world’ rendition of Green Arrow, Aquaman and Impulse.

Superheroes actually looking like superheroes and not Neo/Matrix clones (we’re looking at YOU Kal-el!), who’d a thunk it? Major thumbs up, Dr. Fate looks wicked cool, and give the guy a break who has to wear it, I wouldn’t want any actor to have to suffer to wear an actual full metal mask, the poor (real) guy has to be able to breath in the thing!

The DCU cartoon got it seriously right starting out with three progressively expanded versions of Batman, then introducing Superman, then onto Justice League, and finally everyone in JL Unlimited. It’d be cool to have a team like the JSA spin off of Smallville (just as long as they look like actual superheroes and don’t all start wearing black leather jackets adnauseum!)

  54. X-punged Says:

They don’t look good in still pictures, but thinking with the proper lighting and in action, they’ll probably look better.
Especially since smallville usually has a darker tone when on screen, I’m thinking the uglier aspects will be hidden.
Quite honestly most superhero costumes are ridiculous, so I’m not shocked that these don’t look too good.

  55. K Stevens Says:

    Dr. Fate – 10
    Hawkman – 10
Stargirl – 8: Although the mask should be a wee bit smaller, everyelse looks great.

Now all we need is Welling to put on the famous blue & red (not the damned shirt and jacket) and all should be well.

  56. RunnerX13 Says:

Costume design must have worked really hard to make Dr. Fate look that bad. He looks like a big blue and gold rubbery mess. Is he planning on doing the dished with those gloves?

  57. Zenstrive Says:

Huh? Dr. Fate is okay, but Stargirl and Hawkman are just….stupid looking. Stargirl’s rod is not even in satisfactory length! It should be longer! Hawkman’s mask is too big for his face, and the wings are too small for his epicness!

  58. Christopher Says:

These photos can no more tell us how this is going to translate to film than a pre-season scrimmage can tell us which NCAA football team is going to win the national championship! Wait until you see the episode, then pass judgement. That’s what I intend to do, and for the time being I’m just pleased as punch to think that some of my favorite heroes are about to debut on prime-time television.

  59. Crimsonrain Says:

hell at least they are closer to the actual thing than Cyborg, Aquaman and Kid Flash. Only one that has been even close was Zatanna. Every other costume on the show prior to the JSA have not even been close.

  60. maximumjla Says:

I agree with everyone else, the Stargirl mask is horrible, did they do no market research with their target audience? I’m fine with Hawkman and Fate. But can the girl playing Courtney look anymore angry in the shot?

  61. James McEwan Says:

I dig them. Chances are Stargirl will have a similar origin as the comics, except she steals Starman’s cosmic rod instead of the belt, so it makes sense that her costume looks very home made, in fact that’s a brave step to take on a superhero show/movie.

  62. Fish Says:

They look horrid. Dr. Fate’s mask looks plastic, Hawkman looks like a bad Halloween costume and Stargirl’s is OK at best, but the rod again looks like a bad Halloween costume. They reminded me of Might Morphin’ Power Rangers

  63. Suthernboy Says:

I will reserve judgment until I see them on screen but I think they have done a commendable job overall. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

  64. tralfaz Says:

not enough cape for Dr Fate, and the mask needs to look more metallic. also I think the medallion should be there instead of it being a button holding up his cape

    stargirl’s mask is too big

  65. deadmerc Says:

I don’t like Stargirl’s mongoloid mask and the actress is too old.
Dr. Fate looks awesome as does Hawkman. Though, I wonder how fake the wings look in the actual show?

  66. Joe Says:

    Absolutely PREPOSTEROUSLY AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow this show has degenerated drastically over the last few years hasn’t it? What happened to their original credo of doing the story of Clark Kent becoming Superman without costumes? This really sincerely looks like it’s meant to be a joke. These costumes look so bad, that you can’t even take them as un-seriously as you’d take the really big fat guy nerd who comes to the halloween party in the Aquaman underoos. TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE.

I’d say I want my eyes removed b/c of seeing these images, but the sheer tragedy of them has already burned out my retinas!

    OUT!

  67. Son_of_Darkseid Says:

Painful to see. Hawkman’s mask is dead on but his wing’s look poorly glued in place and unless his wings come down at least to the back of his knees, he will look like Cupid. When stretched out his wongspan needs to be about twelve feet, otherwise there is no way people will buy him porpelling himself through the air with them.

To the poster above, his wongs are not MADE of Nth metal, his belt and or harness is, which makes him lighter so that he can fly while arrying a thirty-five pound mace.

Fate looks terrible. The amulet and helmet should look metallic and don’t at all. His cape should be big and flowing his body should be dark and shadowy. The helmet is huge (like a dr. Fate bobblehead doll). I wonder if it is bit to allow for the glowing eyes (which should just be CG-added). He doesn’t have even the slightest bit of V-taper. Perhaps a very skinny actor with some natural looking shoulder pads would be enough since Fate doesn’t need to be physically powerful.

Courtney/Stargirl doesn’t look too bad except for the mask and her grumpy expression. Since her cosmic rod look like a glowing sextoy glowed to a broomstick, youd think she;d be more smiley.

  68. john Says:

Is Fate going to do the dishes?lol. Well throw everything of DC, Smallville writers, cause you need the ratings. Shame we can’t see who we really want to see. The next two thirds of the Trinity.Or at least a hot WW.

  69. jose Ulloa Says:

I don`t know…I`m very much looking forward to this episode, but thsoe costumes look too much “cosplayish” to me. One would think they are trying to tell people ” and this is why we don`t give Clark his costume”…

  70. Scott Says:

I love love love Stargirl’s mask. Everything else looks horrible.

  71. Clint Says:

I think the costumes SUCK! They do not go with the style of the show. They should have done a more realistic style to the costumes, such as Stargirls’ being more like something out of her closet – denim, star patches, material mask etc. Hawkman should be a bit more technical. Why feathers? Why not something like the thanagarian wings and be retracable? Dr. Fate should have been more clothing and not a rubber suit. I just got excited again with the series and story lines. Now, I’m having my doubts again.

  72. So Hard Says:

    Looks great!

I can hardly wait for this episode now.

  73. Cæu Zokul Says:

I don’t care WHAT the nay-sayers say: Dr. Fate (in ALL of his incarnations) is the S***.
He’s the S*** that does not stink! He’s the S*** that does not sink! Dr. Fate will ALWAYS be cool. Cool on the printed page wether Golden or Modern Age. Cool animated, Dini-style; and now cool on the ‘small screen.’
Dr. Fate is cool. As is Dr. Strange.

    Just remember that.

  74. Gremlin517 Says:

God, I’m just so glad that they didn’t go the route they normally have–can you imagine Hawkman’s mask as just a pair of sunglasses, with little stuck on hawk wings (picture those pointy, sixties sunglasses) and the rest of his costume as just a hoodie with an iron-on transfer of a hawk on it. Dr. Fate could have been been some burned out beach bum and they could have done some vague reference to the helm of Nabu–maybe a potted plant in the background shaped like the headgear in the background as he and his twin (Inza) waxe poetic about the good ole days. I just think its funny that most people are complaining about Stargirl, because her costume is still better than any of the other “costumes” regularly on the show. I love that DC, Warner and Smallville had the guts to do the JSA right.

  75. Jeremy Says:

I agree with Cint as they should have had costumes more in the spirit of the show. However I didn’t like the Legion costumes when they were on Smallville because they looked like regular cloths. I think a blend of the two is preferable in my opinion.

I must say Hawkman with his fake feathers looks like a Halloween costume version of the real deal. If we would have seen the guy’s chest, at least he would have looked like someone that can handle himself for real.

  76. Crimsonrain Says:

lol..one other thing you have to remember when it comes to guys…and I’m only speaking about the guys here…is that when it comes to costumes most guys don’t have the muscle structure that they show in comics. Most guys that have structure close to that probably can’t act at all…or very little. They have to put the fake muscles into the costumes to make them look even close.

  77. g'nort Says:

Can someone please get stargirl a push-up bra !!! Oh by the way Dr fate you’re washing the dishes tonite

  78. andrew Says:

honestly smallville has been lacking so much lately. and ill be the one to say it. these costumes suck. plain and simple. doctor fates really does look like left over peices from past costumes. the gloves and cap dont go well with the damn chest piece. and he shouldnt even have a chest piece. he’s always had just a simple costume. and star girls just looks like a sweater from walmart and a bad disney mask. hawkman was a good attempt but its so hard to actually make good wings. i think they should have gotten in contact with the prop maker for dogma to get a better set.

  79. Bathroom Renovations Says:

Many thanks for this information great overview; this would be the kind of consideration that keeps me though out the day.Ive forever prolonged been wanting around for your web-site best immediately after I viewed about these from a shut pal and was completely happy when I was in a position to explore it correct immediately after seeking out for a while. 83. fitness Says:

dont really care for any of the costumes, looks like horrible lighting though, making them look really dumb cartoony looking
