‘Twas the Night Before Wednesday…

November 24th, 2009
Author J. Caleb Mozzocco

Not only is tonight the night before Wednesday, it’s also the night before the night before Thanksgiving. Here in America, that’s a very special holiday, on which we commemorate one of the founding myths of our society. Each fourth Thursday of November we remember that terrible first year of Solomon Kane’s in the New World, during which the vengeful, bad-ass puritan was unable to make his crops grow, no matter how many times he stabbed them, shot them and called them sinners.

When the harvesting season had almost passed, it was beginning to look like Kane might starve to death, but thankfully Turok, Son of Stone arrived with enough pterodactyl meat to save Kane. Ever since, we’ve gathered together with our loved ones to eat the closet thing to pterodactyl meat we can find.

What comics can we look forward to re-reading in the corner at our family gatherings instead of making small talk with our extended families this Thanksgiving? Let’s take a look at some of them, after the jump!

Blackest Night #5: It’s a big week for DC’s biggest storyline, as Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert reveal the boss that Hal Jordan and company have to beat before the series is over in the fifth issue of the eight-part series. Meanwhile, Johns, Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy continue to look at what the colored Corps are up to in Green Lantern #48. Less central to the storyline, but still featuring Black Lanterns, are the oversized Justice League of America #39 and Teen Titans #77.

Doris Danger Vol. 1: Giant Monster Adventures: This is a 95-page, $10 trade by Chris Wisnia about a photojournalist and the giant monsters she covers. Publisher SLG says it “mixes the X-Files with the famous Lee/Kirby giant monster comics (with a little bit of Godzilla thrown in for good measure).” Sure looks nice.

How To Draw (And Fight) Zombies Pocket Manga Vol. 1: If you ever find yourself in the position to have to fight zombies, chance are you won’t also have the time or inclination to draw them.

Image United #1: “The crossover event of the century is here!” screams image.com, and before you call BS, remember that Crisis on Infinite Earths and Secret Wars were both technically last century. This six-part series unites creators Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino and their signature creations in a story penned by Robert Kirkman. I don’t have very fond memories of any of these characters, but the jam-piece nature of the artwork sure sounds intriguing. The first of the six issues will have what looks like seven different covers. Buy them all—for old time’s sake! You can see a preview here.

Incredible Hercules #138: Along with Invincible Iron Man #20 and Fantastic Four #573, Inc Herc is probably the most well-regarded and best-reviewed of Marvel’s singles coming out this week. Note that Herc jumps to $3.99 this ish, and adds an Agents of Atlas back-up. Iron Man also jumps up to $3.99 this ish, but marvel.com doesn’t say whether or not there are more pages added.

Justice League: Cry For Justice #5: James Robinson and  Mauro Cascioli’s controversial (and terrible!) miniseries continues, and this one looks like it will have some smooching in it! And Roy “Red Arrow” Harper in it! Is he going to die in #7? Oh my God, he’s totally going to die in #7, isn’t he? For a lighter-hearted, better-produced Justice League experience, this week also sees the release of Justice League International Vol. 3, a $20, 225-page trade paperback by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, Kevin Maguire, Ty Templeton, Mike McKone and others.

Lizard Prince Vol. 1: This $10, 200-page manga digest tells the story of a young Jim Morrison, before he grew up to become the Lizard King. Now wait, it’s about romance between a prince and princess, which involves curses and potions.

Shade The Changing Man Vol. 1: The American Scream: Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo’s first generation Vertigo series returns in two trade paperback collections. The first volume is a new printing, while and the second volume, The Edge of Vision, is in print for the first time. It’s 190-pages for $20. That takes care of Shade #1 through #13… just 57 more issues to go!*

Star Comics: All-Star Collection Vol. 1: This $20, 215-page trade paperback collects the first few issues of Planet Terry, Wally The Wizard, Royal Roy and Top Dog, mid-80′s books from Marvel’s old kid imprint Star Comics. It includes work from Bob Bolling, Sid Jacobsen, Stan Kay and others.

*Damn it Jog, there are only so many jokes to go around! Stop thinking of the same ones as me!
