It always felt like vampyr was more a surrealistic ghost story than a vampire flick, but its pretty much mandatory viewing for anyone into early horror. Near dark is awesome, but I HATE Near Dark's ending with the blood transfusion...BULLSHIT! The X-FILES "Bad Blood" episode is a pretty good twilight-antidote as well Where's all the love for Mr. Vampire??? Very creepy stuff for it's time. I also love 'The Hunger', Tony Scott's first major film. Very grim, very cool with some pretty obvious aids metaphors and a nasty scene involving a decrepid, hyper-aged David Bowie attacking a young girl... And a younger, sexier Susan Sarandon making the spider-fight with Catherine Deneuve. And I know we're all almost as sick of True Blood as we are of Twilight, but to be fair, True Blood doesn't go thirty minutes without boobs popping up which is a major plus for me. Del Toro's CRONOS almost made the list, but I ran out of space, its' a really great meditation on why vampire immortality would really suck, a horror movie that actual argues death is a positive natral thing... Since seeing it for the first time about ten years ago, it's a must-watch for me every October (preferrably on Halloween itself). Peter Cushing is the best Van Helsing ever, he's a true hero in every sense of the word in BRIDES, and watching it now demonstrates one of the biggest flaws with today's vampire stories - the lack of great vampire hunter characters (Buffy notwithstanding).
