So after seeing yesterday’s post about the first look at Smallville’s Hawkman, a lot of the comments skewed towards the negative. While I feel the jury might still be out on that one, only one thing’s for certain:
THAT is how Hawkman is supposed to look. This piece, drawn by The Mighty’s Chris Samnee, is just freaking awesome. Get the right colorist on this guy, and a Samnee Hawkman might just sell gangbusters. What say you, Rama readers?

Exactly!

I say that Hawkman is a lot like Ghost Rider–a great character design that doesn’t necessarily support an actual story, at least not in the current market/storytelling paradigm. Kyle Baker’s dead simple, non-stop action version in Wednesday Comics was a lot of fun, but good luck finding 20,000+ people to buy that every month.

I agree with Cole Moore Odell. There are a number of characters I think fans want to exist but don’t necessarily buy a solo comic books about. Aquaman, Hawkman, Firestorm, and the Atom seem to be the top of the list for DC. Is there anyone who is upset that there isn’t a Martian Manhunter solo book, or is unhappiness over his demise centered around the fact that he isn’t available for the JLA (who could definitely use him)?

You’re comparing a live action Hawkman to a drawing of Hawkman. Some characters are not able to be translated properly into live action the way they’re drawn.

Chris Samnee can draw anything.
One of the more underutilized talents in the business.

Nice art, fer sher… But I’m with Cole too. I have no interest in buying a Hawkman book. I really enjoyed the Hawkworld miniseries all those years ago, and I stayed with the monthly that came after for awhile, but that was a totally different take on the Hawks. The current Hawkman just isn’t interesting to me.
I enjoyed Shayera/Hawkgirl on the animated Justice League though… I was dismayed to find out, after I came back to comics, that she was killed. No idea how it happened or who that replacement Hawkgirl is. I never even bothered to look it up. Just another reason I dislike the current DCU.

That is AMAZING, I agree David! Chris is such an amazing talent, and this drawing just proves it even more so. One of the BEST Hawkman drawings I’ve ever seen, no doubt!

Chris Samnee is one of comics’ best kept secrets. Kid’s about to go off!

I’m with Clay, Samnee is a heckuva talented artist who just keeps growing and growing every year.
