Those of you who have been fans of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, this might be some great news for you!
According to Shock ‘Til You Drop, the prolific author said a a book signing that he had “one more Dark Tower book to write.”
The Liljas-Library site also issued the following note, allegedly from Stephen King’s message board — that said, I’m taking this one with a grain of salt, as I have not been able to find a direct link yet:
“Stephen has given me permission to pass along that he has an idea for a new Dark Tower book, the working title of which will be The Wind Through The Keyhole. He has not yet started this book and anticipates that it will be a minimum of eight months before he is able to begin writing it.”
Considering the Dark Tower series has been lovingly rendered by Marvel, with creators such as Peter David, Robin Furth, Richard Isanove, and Jae Lee, this could be some welcome news for comics fans. It may not focus specifically on the Gunslinger himself — according to Zach Dionne at GQ, this will likely focus on supporting characters, especially dealing with events from Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla — but this may definitely tie up some loose ends. Thoughts?

It’s news I take with a bit of trepidation. I love most of the Dark Tower books, but I also felt that by the time King pushed himself to the end, he’d told all the story he needed to and then some. Never mind that the ending, while consistent with the rest of the series, was a real downer. And never mind that we already know how things end, and that will color our willingness to travel with Roland and company again.
That said, I am still a huge fan of the books, and there is every indication that King has not lost anything as a writer in the past decade (assuming you liked him in the first place). I will wait and see, and be there to read it when it arrives.

The first four books of the dark tower series were fantastic. The last few got progressively worse, with the final book and ending just horrible. I would love an unprecedented move by king to say “never mind that last book. that was a rushed book written by an author who was scared into haphazardly finishing a series by a horrible accident. Here is the real ending to the Dark Tower series!” I’d give him a mulligan, and I would buy that book. Otherwise, no thanks.

I haven’t finished reading the Dark Tower series just yet…I only just finished the fifth book, but I do love the series. I am a bit amazed that he would consider writing an eighth book because I was under the impression that by the end of book 7 Roland and his ka-tet’s journey was completed. Of course, I’m not saying I wouldn’t read the book; I love anything Stephen King. Should he decide to do this, I’m on board, and I will read it. Thanks, David, for sharing this article and video. I look forward to whatever Mr. King decides to write next!
