“Venom” script finds writer AND director?

October 8th, 2009
Author Lan Pitts

According to the blog Heat Vision, an offshoot of The Hollywood Reporter, Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) is handling yet another Spider-Man-related production (he’s currently writing Spider-Man 4): Venom and also possibly directing it.

Ross, who is a three-time Academy Award nominee (Seabiscuit, Dave, Big who he co-wrote with Anne Spielberg) is just the latest name attached to the Venom project. It was reported early this year, that Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were working on a treatment for the character.

No word yet on whether Topher Grace will reprise his role from Spider-Man 3 or not.

This will be Ross’ first time in the director’s chair, should the rumors be true, since 2003. Let’s pray there are no Eddie Brock dance numbers.

Now this project has been in limbo for a while now, so let me ask you this: do you think Venom is a strong enough character to hold his own movie?

It Came From the NYPL: Fantastic Four Visionaries: Walter Simonson vol. 2

October 7th, 2009
Author Michael C. Lorah

Some thoughts on my latest borrowing from the New York Public Library:

Okay, first, a little bit of comic book blasphemy: I really don’t like the Fantastic Four. (It’s not terribly surprising; they’re among the 99% of DC and Marvel’s pantheons that I’d say the same about.) The characters’ creators, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, authored some wonderful comic book yarns starring this family, but somehow, they established the characters’ voices so firmly, so rigidly, that nearly every creator to follow them onto the magazine has driven Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny into cliché. Yet, as has been the case with others among the seemingly infinite number of comic book superheroes I’m cold to, occasionally a creator comes along who thaws my sensitivity to the sometimes mind-numbing repetition of good vs. evil and thematic redundancy of the superhero genre.

Walter Simonson’s Thor is among my favorite comic book series of all time. His work on DC’s Orion is, for my money, the last true, must-read superhero series. With this in mind, I came to Marvel’s collection of his early 1990s Fantastic Four run with mild trepidation, but hope that Simonson would join Stan & Jack and John Byrne as FF creators worth the price of admission.

Packing each story with time-hopping, dinosaur-battling, powerless, political, and outrageous adventures, Simonson could’ve inserted any character into these adventures and won me over. That he managed to find facets of the characters that I was able to enjoy is all the more impressive. Sharon Ventura, a character I’d never read an appearance of prior to vol. 1 of this series, has several terrific scenes, a twist on the classic “Ben Grimm tragedy,” given sufficient uniqueness when viewed through the prism of her character. Ben’s role as the team’s surly uncle is perfect, and Simonson’s patter between Reed and Sue made them seem like an actual couple for one of the rare times in their history.

Simonson jams each issue with a zany, anything-goes plot style that keeps the reader engaged on every page, and his art is up to his usually high standards. One meta-level highlight is seeing Simonson’s dinosaur-like signature at the bottom of a splash page depicting a more ferocious lizard bearing down on the team. The offbeat political humor of a two-parter that finds the FF in a parallel world where the Cold War is about to go hot, and Dan Quayle as president, well… the references are a little aged these days, but the tongue-in-cheek quality still plays effectively.

If there’s a problem with Fantastic Four Visionaries: Walter Simonson vol. 2, it definitely lies in some of the peculiar decisions made by Marvel’s collected editions department. The book contains only five issues – two two-parters, the Cold War dramedy and a dinosaur island romp – one of which is a fill-in issue by creators named neither Walter nor Simonson. If the issue were important to the unfolding Simonson storyline, I could understand its inclusion, but it’s a fairly ordinary “dark night of the soul” melodrama starring the Torch, the sort of thing that Stan Lee did much better. Essentially, the issue has no place in a Walter Simonson Visionaries book. With only five issues, one that doesn’t belong, this trade is very light and not quite up to its cover price. Fortunately, I and many other lucky readers can still experience the good times of Walter Simonson’s Fantastic Four via their local library.

Blog@ Q&A: Erik Larsen on Savage Dragon #153

October 7th, 2009
Author Russ Burlingame

With the release today of Savage Dragon #153, the monstrous, Dragonlike character called Virus has made its way to Malcolm and Angel’s house, and conflicts raged between him and the Dragon Kids; between Overlord and rogue elements of the Vicious Circle; and between Malcolm and just about everybody he met. Erik Larsen sat down with us to provide some color commentary on the issue.

Blog@Newsarama: You know, it’s funny–that exoskeletal costume basically has NOTHING unnecessary on it–except the eyelash/antennae. Are they just for show or do they have a function?

Erik Larsen: It’s a balance thing–like with a cat and its whiskers. Helps her keep her balance scaling walls and jumping from rooftop to rooftop (and yes–I did just make that up. Pretty impressive, eh?).

Blog@: I know we’ve talked a little bit about Malcolm being confused about how he feels for Angel–is it possible that hormones are playing a role in some of what we’re seeing here? Even if you can put his denial of Dragon’s death up to “faith in his old man,” it seems like the beating and trash-talking of a basically defenseless villain is something worth noting…!

EL: She’s hardly defenseless– but I was trying to show Malcolm’s desperation and growing anxiousness and panic. He’s running out of options and he’s in a bad way. (more…)

HBO Not Bored with “Bored to Death”

October 7th, 2009
Author Troy Brownfield

New HBO series “Bored to Death” already has a second season order in place. It’s worth noting here because the Jonathan Ames-created show fairly swims in fan-friendly archetypes. The noir-inflected comedy stars Jason Schwartzman as a writer turned “unlicensed private investigator”, with Zach Galifianakis as his Dean Haspiel-inspired comic book artist buddy. Plus, Ted Danson smokes a lot of weed.

IDW to launch Army of Two, Dragon Age comics

October 7th, 2009
Author David Pepose

IDW has announced that it will be publishing two new comics with Electronic Arts, to capitalize on some recent video game franchises: Army of Two and Dragon Age.

According to a press statement, EA will be in charge of the creative aspects of the books, while IDW will print and distribute them. Yet the talent is perhaps even more surprising: Peter Milligan will be writing Army of Two with newcomer artist Dexter Soy, while Orson Scott Card will be writing Dragon Age.

“This is a great opportunity for IDW to work with a worldwide leader in video games,” said IDW’s COO Greg Goldstein in the statement. “We look forward to bringing a tremendous amount of great content into the comics market.”

Adrian Brody to fight a Predator

October 7th, 2009
Author David Pepose

Yep, it’s about as believable as it sounds, and yes, I did spend way too much time Photoshopping this image.

But Variety reports that star of the Dahrjeeling Limited will be taking on that hunter of the spaceways in the upcoming Robert Rodriguez film, “Predators.” To be fair, with that title, I think he just thought he was signing on for another Roman Polanski film.

That said, Brody’s luck against larger-than-life foes hasn’t been good, if any of you have seen the Peter Jackson remake of King Kong.

Even more hilarity — The Hollywood Reporter has said that Topher Grace is also in talks to be in the film as well. I guess the motto of this one is “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” That is, until the dog gets horribly murdered by the Predator’s plasma caster.

Hamner/Martin debut art print at Baltimore this weekend

October 7th, 2009
Author Lan Pitts

shehulk

That wall didn’t stand a chance.

Two of today’s most talented artists are bringing something different to their table this weekend at the Baltimore Comic Con. Now, Laura Martin already has a few art prints available, but this piece would be Cully Hamner’s first colored print. I’ve been watching the progress over at his blog and I have to say, this turned out great.

I only had one question: why She-Hulk?

“Well, we were tossing around ideas and asked around the studio with some of the other guys and interns”, Hamner replied. “I don’t often do Marvel characters, and I didn’t want to do the usual ones you see on these things, like Phoenix, Black Cat, and the like. So the consensus around here was She-Hulk.”

And talk about a limited run! There will be less than 50 of these to go around.

Don’t miss out on this one, Shulkie fans.

Linkarama@Newsarama

October 7th, 2009
Author J. Caleb Mozzocco

“I recognize Bloom County‘s influence but I’ll stop short of embracing it, as I do a porcupine”: Here’s another Berkeley Breathed interview timed to coincide with the release of the first volume of IDW’s Bloom County: Complete Library, this one conducted by John Geddes for USA Today. That’s Breathed trying to answer what he calls a difficult-to-answer question.

“Is Archie Andrews a bigamist?”: Well at the very least, he’s awfully indecisive. The New York Times notes the dropping of the other shoe—Archie’s much-publicized possible future wedding to Veronica will be followed by a possible future wedding to Betty. (UPDATE: Registration now required, because the NYT are a bunch of selfish old media jerks).

Fan goes to court for reading Ultimate X-Men graphic novel: I mean Method Man, not fan. And he wasn’t there for reading Ultimate X-Men, but for alleged tax evasion…he was just reading Ultimate X-Men while he was there.

“The mild-mannered Michelin Man is about to undergo a makeover, emerging as a tire-chucking superhero”: According to CNN, the creepy, white, swollen, tire pitchman is going to take a more aggressive stance on whether or not people should use his tires. The piece is worth a look for the awesome picture of a cigar-smoking, bicycle-riding Michelin Man chucking rubbing tires from his own abdomen. Is it just me, or does anyone else see a little of Golden Age Marvel robot hero Flexo The Rubber Man in the Michelin Man…?

“Most people in the U.S. would rather watch a movie or listen to a CD or even read a book than pick up a comic”: Noah Berlatsky takes a look at how horribly the sales of the best-selling comics stack up against hits in other media. Unsurprisingly, comics don’t fare very well against DVDs, music or books of the non-comic variety. Something to keep in mind the next time you see a publisher triumphantly trumpeting news of an issue selling out.

“Coach Daniel, the gym teacher at the school where I work, spied the cover of my Teen Titans comic and said, ‘Damn! They’re not teens anymore! She’s hot‘”: Nina Stone tries to read a random issue of Teen Titans, and is largely ambivalent about what she saw in #75. But she didn’t hate it, and wasn’t totally confused by it, so it could certainly have been much, much worse.

“What impressed me was the sense of community that Belent and Golightly manage to build within the pages of the book”: Prominent blogger Cheryl Lynn reviews an issue of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose on what seems to be a dare, and the result is an extremely fair, evenly toned review of what she thought worked and didn’t work about the comic. I found that interesting in large part because I never see anyone write anything about Tarot ever, other than Invinceable Super-Blogger Chris Sims, who has probably written more about Tarot than anyone else on earth with the exception of Jim Balent himself.

Hadoken! Street Fighter color challenge

October 6th, 2009
Author Lan Pitts

tribute by Chris Shields

Street Fighter artist Alvin Lee started a coloring contest a while back to celebrate the launch of his new website. The results have been tremendous with HUNDREDS of submissions, but there will only be five finalists and then they will be featured on the website and will be voted on by a web-poll. The winner will be determined by a board of judges along with Lee, meanwhile taking into consideration the final vote count, will then be rewarded one grand prize.

What is the grand prize exactly? Along with some pretty cool merchandise, a chance of a lifetime. The winner’s submission will also be featured on Lee’s deviant art page as well as his website. Depending on the review of Lee, the grand prize winner may also get the chance to be rewarded a professional rate of $300, in which the submission will be made into limited prints with full artist credentials, and made available on alvinleeart.com. In addition, the winner has the opportunity to become Alvin Lee’s next exclusive digital colorist for any future projects.

The finalists should be announced tonight and then voting will be underway. I’ve gone through a couple of these and I have a few I really dig (namely the piece I used for this article, done by Chris Shields).

Best of luck to all of you who entered!

‘Twas the Night Before Wednesday…

October 6th, 2009
Author J. Caleb Mozzocco

Poor Stephen Strange. Marvel finally goes ahead and greenlights a new ongoing series featuring their Sorcerer Supreme, but they do so just as Strange loses the role to a character whose name the company found so embarassing that they had to change it before they put it on the cover of a comic book.

Don’t take it too hard, Stephen. Everything in super-comics is temporary after all. For the time being, if you wanna read about a guy in a red cape casting spells in the Marvel Universe, you can do so in the pages of Doctor Voodoo: Avenger of the Supernatural, which launches this week. It’s written by Rick Remender, penciled by Jefte Palo and will cost you $4 an issue.

What other new books are due in shops this week, and will any of them star Dr. Strange? To answer the second question first, no. To answer the first, join me after the jump.

Domo-kun “domo-nating” 7-Eleven!

October 6th, 2009
Author Lan Pitts

You may have noticed something a little different at your local 7-Eleven. Something a bit brown, furry, and one of the biggest internet sensations perhaps?

That’s right! It’s Domo and he’s invading 7-Elevens this Fall.

I didn’t know anything about this promotion until I saw this and rushed over to my 7-Eleven (that’s about a half-mile away from my house) to see what exactly they had in terms of Domo-related merchandise. I bought one of everything. (more…)

The Rise of EPIC MICKEY

October 6th, 2009
Author David Pepose

It’s ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!

Blast Magazine has posted an image of the next issue of Game Informer, which has a cover confirming that the post-apocalyptic and/or steampunk-flavored Disney game will in fact be a reality.

If you’re curious about looking at some concept shots of this game click here. Is it Mickey as we’ve never seen him before? if this cover and those images are any indication — heck yeah!

BOOM! teams up with Haven Distributors

October 6th, 2009
Author David Pepose

Talk about stepping up your game — based on an announcement issued yesterday, you can tell that BOOM! Studios is dead serious about getting their books out.

Why do I say that? The company announced yesterday that they would be teaming up with Haven Distributors, who would distribute all second printings of both the BOOM! Studios lineup and BOOM! Kids — which by the way houses their line of Disney licensed comics — to direct market stores.

The English translation here: first and foremost, having an alternate distributor is a fairly big deal. When BOOM! Studios sells out a first printing of a book, the company no longer has to wait for Diamond to send second printings out, as they work with specific monthly distribution points. Instead, if a store runs out of a book and orders a second print, Haven is free to send stuff out whenever they want.

“Retailers have been begging us to get our second prints into their stores at a faster pace for the past year,” said BOOM! Studios CEO Ross Richie in a press statement. “We’re happy to be able to offer retailers another choice in getting an important part of our product line to their stores and into the hands of their customers.”

This deal goes in conjunction with BOOM!’s deals with Simon and Schuster and HarperCollinsCanada, who distribute the company’s graphic novels to the mass market in the U.S. and Canada respectively.

Voltron joins UTA

October 6th, 2009
Author David Pepose

Don’t worry, I’m not talking about a sixth robot lion or leaving the Galaxy Alliance.

But Voltron will be joining a heavy-hitting group, as the Hollywood Reporter announced today that they would be joining United Talent Agency.

According to the report, UTA will be working on a possible cartoon, as well as video game and toy deals. The franchise is also moving toward a full-length feature with Dark Knight producer Charles Roven and his company Atlas Entertainment, as well as Jason Netter’s Kickstart Productions.

So When Do You Start Shooting, Mr. Reynolds?

October 5th, 2009
Author Russ Burlingame

A joke made by Ryan Reynolds in last week’s Saturday Night Live monologue–that they were going to start shooting Green Lantern soon, “…so look for that in spring 2053.” There was immediately some speculation as to exactly what he meant by that (and it really sounded more snarky than necessary when he opened with “…because there’s nothing kids love more than lanterns.”), which to me was made even odder by the fact that Sunday morning he was doing blog interviews where he was talking about his excitement over the shoot, which he claims is still on track for February.

While technically he isn’t contradicting himself here (since in the SNL monologue he said that the GL flick would start shooting soon), I can’t help but wonder if someone at Warner Brothers/DC Entertainment put him out there to do spin control when he pooched some of his earliest public comments about what promises to be a major film both for Warner Brothers and for Reynolds’ career. Win, lose or draw, Green Lantern will be a huge, big-budget affair and it’ll probably go down as one of the great successes or failures of the superhero genre.

Reynolds also gave an interview this weekend that described the film as a “space epic,” revealing some minor details about the movie (such as the fact that Kilowog and Sinestro will be involved and that about a third of the movie is set on Oa) and by his presence seeming to confirm the report’s claim that the film is on track for a June 17, 2011, release date.

JJJ doesn’t use the “like” button very often

October 5th, 2009
Author David Pepose

I love snark, I love comics, and I love online social networking programs. So basically this is the Fluffernutter sandwich of the Internet for me.

The Invincible Super-Blog’s very own Chris Simms has posted even more of these superhero Facebook statuses over on Comics Alliance. It’s almost impossible for me to pick a favorite — they’re all equally brilliant. (But Daredevil and Spider-Man might be a little more brilliant.)

Marla Bea Benefit: Comic Art for Breast Cancer Research

October 5th, 2009
Author Lan Pitts

Let’s talk about a good cause.

Beginning on October 12th, there will be an auction for some amazing art pieces and all the proceeds will go to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in hopes to help find a cure for breast cancer.

This is just damn cool. Some of the artists behind the sketches for auction? Robert Atkins, Tony Moore, David Mack, Art Baltazar, Holly G, Katie Cook, Chris Giarusso, Grant Gould, Herb Trimpe, Todd Nuack, Phil Hester, John Beatty…and so much more. Check out the entire list here.

According to the website, the auction will take place on eBay and will last for 7 days and the sketches will be sold under the seller name “marlabeabenefit.” A link will be provided when the auction starts. All items will start at the same price. No reserves or buy it now pricing. All auctions will be sold in the auction format. S& H charges will be based on the size of the sketches.

Now, I’m an avid art collector (much to the chagrin of my girlfriend) and I’ll be definitely be putting a bid on some of these pieces.
