Tokyopop to print Shutter Island graphic novel

October 1st, 2009
Author David Pepose

Toykopop, along with HarperCollins imprint William Morrow, will be releasing a graphic novel adaptation of the film Shutter Island.

The book will be on sale January 5, and is based on Dennis Lehane’s novel with art by Christian de Metter. Shutter Island, which has been adapted to a feature film directed by Martin Scorcese with Leonardo DiCaprio as the star, focuses on an island hospital with a killer on the loose.

“It’s an honor to publish a graphic novel with an author of such stature as Dennis Lehane,” Marco Pavia, Tokyopop Associate Publisher, said in a press release. “In all candor, I’m a huge Lehane fan, and I was stunned at how De Metter’s artwork enhanced the prose experience, adding a discernable layer of anxiety to this unnerving and, ultimately, profoundly moving story.”

The book was apparently first printed in France, where it was a 2009 Official Selection at the Angoulême BD Festival.

Superman! Batman! Ghetto…Man?

October 1st, 2009
Author Lan Pitts

“Legends of the Superheroes” was a (Thank God) short-lived variety show that showcased various members of the DC universe. Of course you had Batman, Robin, Captain Marvel, Green Lantern, Black Canary and even Hawkman, but in one episode (only two were made), Ed McMahon introduced the JLA to a lesser-known superhero: Ghetto Man, played by Brad Sanders.

Now, I understand this was made for kids, but that was just painfully bad for the most part. Though I did actually like the Sammy Davis, jr. jokes.

I tip my hat to B. Clay Moore for posting this on his facebook page.

Rock out to Spider-Woman’s Tangled Web

October 1st, 2009
Author David Pepose

Marvel has a music video up, featuring the Spider-Woman motion comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. The song, called “Watch Your Step,” is by Dan Phillips with Anna Abbey and the Marvel Music Group.

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard of the Marvel Music Group before, but this song does start to grow on you after awhile — and the amount of personalization for this song was really cool. What do you think?

From Irredeemable… to Incorruptible

October 1st, 2009
Author David Pepose

What happens when the world’s greatest hero becomes its greatest villain?

Someone has to step up to take his place.

Mark Waid, writer of BOOM! Studios’ Irredeemable, has the flipside to his Superman-gone-wrong, with new series Incorruptible. Following Max Daring — formerly the super-criminal known as Max Danger — the story explores what happens when the world goes to hell, and how a bad guy can make good.

“While you don’t need to be reading Irredeemable to enjoy this new series, Incorruptible continues that complex study of caped morality at the end of the world,” Managing Editor Matt Gagnon said in a press release. “Readers will be shown a shockingly different perspective of The Plutonian’s world, where a super-villain, pushed by an insurmountable force, dares to be Incorruptible. “

They cannot die. They feel no pain. They hunger for human flesh. They are Revenants. Centuries ago, the Revenant known as Mot was worshipped as a God. Now, he walks the Earth in search of a purpose to his immortality – but when a secret society discovers a way to kill Revenants, Mot and his fellow immortals must make a choice: Hunt or be hunted. Comcast Reportedly in Talks with NBC Universal

October 1st, 2009
Author Henry Chamberlain

It’s possible that you’ll be seeing a change of ownership of your favorite NBC Universal shows like “Heroes,” “Battlestar Galactica,” and the whole SyFy channel because it’s possible that Comcast Corp is going to make a play for the whole shooting match: a major network and movie studio and powerful cable channels like MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo. That would be a huge leap in content for Comcast which currently owns such channels as E! Entertainment Television and G4.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Comcast Corp, the nation’s biggest cable company, is in talks to buy NBC Universal. While there has been speculation over the future of NBC Universal, it is far from certain what will happen next.

This isn’t the first time that Comcast has made such a bid. Five years ago it attempted to buy Disney for $54 billion. The article states that “While NBC Universal is valued at up to $35 billion, Comcast has a market cap of $48 billion and about $4 billion in cash. This would make it a highly leveraged buyout of NBC Universal.”

In a story full of scenarios, The Times makes a very interesting comics-related point. It may turn out that Time Warner, owner of DC Comics, could be in the best position to be the ultimate buyer of NBC Universal.

For the complete story, visit The Los Angeles Times here.
