Great Odin’s raven! Reports are coming in all over from Worst Previews to MTV concerning Academy Award winner Sir Anthony Hopkins will be portraying Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki’s (Tom Hiddleson) father, Odin, in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor adaptation.
This news comes just over a week after the Robert DeNiro and Jude Law casting rumor is put to rest, much like an Odinsleep.
I personally couldn’t think of a better casting. Now, there were rumors of an actor by the name of Brian Blessed originally playing Odin, but I just love this idea. He joins an already well-rounded ensemble, along with Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Jaimie Alexander as Sif.
Filming is to start January and Paramount Pictures will release the film on May 20, 2011.

Excellent casting! Kenneth Branagh has a what seems to be a great movie in the works.
As far as Brian Blessed goes, he’d make a fantastic Volstagg.

The more information that comes out with this movie, the more excited I am to see it. So far, they seem to be on the right track. I just hope the story and effects stay strong.
I would love for the Avengers movie to show Tony doubting Thor’s ‘godliness’ while throwing back some brewskies together.

While I’m sure Hopkins will do a fantastic job, I was actually looking forward to Brian Blessed in this role. His voice is so commanding that it’s easy to imagine it as Odin’s. Though I agree with Gorn, if he’s not Odin then he’d be an ideal Volstagg.

When I read American Gods (Neil Gaiman) I always pictured Sir Anthony Hopkins as Wednesday (Odin). Just seemed like a good fit for the way Gaiman wrote him….

Filming to start in January and then the film is going to be released in May? I certainly hope that this announcement is right. However, that gives the studio about four months to film, edit, and then market the movie. I hope for the May release, but will not be surprised if 1) this announcement is premature and/or 2) the movie release is pushed back to a later date.

Seriously, this is awesome. Better than awesome. Do I see a golden god named Oscar joining the ranks of Asgard, mayhap?

hopkins = awesomenews, but does anybody know if the guys playing his kids can act? you need two actors to carry a scene — e.g. while Downey Jr. was great in Iron Man, the win was how good he was with Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard (less so) and especially Jeff Bridges.
Plus I wish the production design was slavishly devoted to Kirby — it probably wouldn’t work, but I’d love to see an odin costume that looked just like the image above.
Finally, I know it’s even less possible, but I always thought Ego the Living Planet would be something that would translate well to the screen. Not the big goofy face, but the idea of a massive, intelligent, malevolent environment.

Well I’m glad Marvel is making the movie and not you.

Excellent choice, Hopkins is hell of an actor, just hope Branagh use him at full, he can make a great Odin.
Peace.

AWEsome! Wow, perfect choice.

I’m starting to look forward to this movie a lot more. I want to see Thor kick some ass though. If this is like Hulk #1 then I will be disappointed. We need at least two fight scenes. Thor must fly and it must be awesome.
I’m looking forward to the easter egg at the end. I wonder if it will be Tony Stark of Col. Fury who contact Thor?!

Maybe in the end of the movie, he’ll eat Loki’s brain to about humility in Midgard.
C’mon!! I’m the first one to make a Lechter/Odin joke? Really?

As a long-time fan of THOR, I’m very excited about the casting so far. I only wish that the version of THOR being filmed was the red caped, winged-helmet, uru hammer version I’ve come to appreciate and not the Ultimates version, that (I’m understanding) is being brought to the big screen. Although I completely understand that a blue spandex, full red cape and winged-helmet character may not translate well onto a live-action movie format, still…I’d love to see him in that costume (at least once) as homage to the original character design. Maybe he can wear the more “colorful duds,” during his time on Asgard, perhaps for a ceremony honoring a fallen warrior so we can see THOR as he was originally designed. I could then accept him in the Ultimates attire, later in the movie, during his time on earth. That “costume change” would make sense to me. Other than that, as long as THOR flies, speaks in a mild “Norse/Scandanavian” accent and commands the storms with Mjolnir…I’m sure that I’ll enjoy the movie. In my opinion, MARVEL is doing a far better job with bringing [their] characters to the big-screen than how the other studios have done. (I’m mainly referring to the Ang Lee: HULK, Elektra and Daredevil movies, but also the Spiderman and X-Men movies as well). They ALL could have been so, SO much better and in the hands of MARVEL Studios, (based on the success of Iron Man and the “vastly underrated” The Incredible HULK)…I believe they would have been even better. So far, based on the details we’ve been given concerning our Thunder God’s big screen debut, I believe MARVEL will have yet another successful franchise in the making. M3!…(Make Mine Marvel).

I never thought of him to play Odin but now that I think about it it’s a great choice.

Yes. And there’s a good reason for that.
