SciFi Wire and IGN are reporting the news that Michael Shanks, late of the “Stargate” franchise, will play Hawkman in the Justice Society episode of “Smallville”. You may recall that the episode in question will be written by fan-favorite Geoff Johns.

Also appearing? Dr. Fate! He’ll be played by actor Brent Stait, also known for his appearances in genre fare like “Stargate”.

Plus, Fancast has chimed in that Stargirl will appear in the person of actress Britt Irvin (best known for “Aliens in America”).

The episode in question, “Society”, is scheduled for January. It will be directed by Glen Winter, who also directed the “Legion” episode. And yes, MORE JSAers have been rumored to appear.

UPDATE: Geoff Johns, via his Twitter account, stated on Tuesday:

Yes, Hawkman will have wings. And a big mace. Oh. And he and Green Arrow don’t get along. At all.

Freaking sweet! That fits really well!

  2. Jay-Me-Dee Says:

Wow. I didn’t expect Hawkman. Stargirl and Dr. Fate are more “plausible” in the Smallville world…I’m really curious about how they will handle him.

  3. Daryll B Says:

    Must..resist…making…obvious…Egyptian / Alien…typecasting..joke..

Seriously, Shanks is a great actor and I am curious to see how the JSA will be pulled off in the Smallville Universe. However remember the Legion was great in the beginning and they dropped the ball, so was Green Arrow and Brainiac. Yeah my hopes are not too high here…

  4. Ken Says:

I’m impressed! The casting seems perfect for all 3 characters. I’m familiar with Shanks & Stait but I’ll have to check out Britt Irvin’s acting chops… She looks just like Courtney! Hopefully they give her braces. She’s gotta’ have braces.

  5. Ian Sutherland Says:

Okay. Nice choices so far…. Smallville has actually had a pretty good season so far; with Johns’ writing, this episode has promise.

  6. RunnerX13 Says:

    No surprise on Stargirl.

  7. Tom Fitzpatrick Says:

Doesn’t Britt Irvin kind of looks like Erica Durance (if she were brunette)?

  8. justin Says:

Ian, you think it’s been a good season so far? It’s the same old crap it always is. I’ve never really followed the JSA, but I sure Smallville will find a way to F it all up. They will all be in pleather outfits that only vaguely even resemble the actual characters…….

  9. Mike Haseloff Says:

Dr. Fate and Hawkman?! Holy mackerel!
Hope we get more than a librarian enthusiastic about ancient history. I want wings! I want bucket helmets!

  10. daryl Says:

Justin, then why do you watch the show? Who is twisting your arm to watch the show? If the show is the same old crap and they F it up all the time, then why watch it? It makes no sense.I bet you go to the store and buy foods you dislike just so you can bitch about it to other people. ” I went to the store today and bought spinach, I do not like spinach but I buy it anyways, it always taste like crap and is F’up, I don’t know why people like spinach”
Stop watching Smallvile then. That is what I do when I don’t like something on TV or am dissatisfied with a show. Your a big boy, you can do it.

  11. Kevin Huxford Says:

Can’t say I agree with the poster who thinks Hawkman doesn’t seem to fit into Smallville as well as the others. If magic fits, then the Egyptian angle fits. If he’s Thanagarian, then it fits just as well as Kal and J’Onn.

  12. Squashua Says:

    Needs more Flash.

  13. ccsharumun Says:

omfg Michael Shanks. I’ve never been more on board with this show.

  14. Dave Says:

When did they say more JSAers would be revealed? Geoff Johns said there would only be three.

  15. Philip A Moore Says:

They sure chose the right girl to play courtney. the actress looks alot like imgen star girl would look if she wasnt a cartoon and

Dave they only mentioned two names up there so there is still one to be revield

  16. Hotknife86 Says:

Dave, I take it to mean that there will be more members later on in the season, but I could be wrong of course.

  17. justin Says:

Daryl, you sure do have a great way of saying the same sentence in different ways. Yeesh. I keep watching the show in the hopes that it gets better….correction, my partner still enjoys the show, and I’m in the same room while he watches, so I want too in the hopes that it will get better. I also love Chloe…think she’s a great character, and the eps that Johns did were great.

Oh yeah, and I love spinach!

  18. Dave Says:

“Dave they only mentioned two names up there so there is still one to be revield”

…there are three up there, though. Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Stargirl.

  19. jmg Says:

all of them in black trench coats. Hawkman’s wings will be shadows like in Supernatural with the Angels…c’mon. there’s NO WAY they will LOOK like the JSA’ers….there’s no budget for it.

  20. Mike Says:

how does the jsa fit into smallville?

  21. comic_dude Says:

Will Superman’s son appear on Smallville too?? :-P

  22. Alex Says:

Very interesting. I can’t imagine them having comic book costumes in the sense of spandex etc, Dr Fate would probably look incredibly daft in real terms and Hawkman would look like something out of He-man. I’d more think that they’ll just pick some of the iconic features and mix them in with something more modern and practical. I can imagine the helmet staying though.

  23. Christopher Says:

This news is… interesting. The actors definitely look the part, though I’m confused as to how the JSA is more appropriate than, say, expanded storyline with the JLA or the Legion. Still, if their intent was to get me to tune in, then it worked. I’ve never watched Smallville religiously, but I’ll set my DVR for this one.

  24. Brent Says:

As much as I love the JSA, I don’t think that it will go good in the Smallville Universe. I thought that the Legion stuff made the show kinda corny.

  25. Jimalsi Says:

I’m kind of surprised people think Britt Irvin looks like Stargirl. Isn’t Coutney supposed to be 14 in the comic? This actress looks like she’s about 27. Yes, she’s pretty, but a bit too old.

I’m thinking/hoping they can do a good job with the JSA in Smallville. I think they did an excellent job with the first Legion story, especially making the costumes more reserved and not “spandexy,” while still having them resemble the costumes from the comic. But I know way less about the Legion than most fans, so maybe I overlooked things that will instead irritate me if they do them to the JSA, whom I love.

  26. doug_skywalker Says:

what…no Mr. Terrific (Micheal Holt)? Dr. Mid-Nite? Hourman? GREEN LANTERN?…sheesh…

well, at least we got these three…hope to see something special here…tho something tells me they should makes this a two-parter…not sure why…

  27. WyGee Says:

    OMG! Michael Shanks as Hawkman!

I am, however, a complete Stargate junkie (not so much for Smallville)…I love DC Comics and Stargate so much that I’m excited and scared to watch that episode…(crosses my fingers…please don’t F*** it up)

Stargirl! Bleh! First Impulse and Cyborg, now Stargirl and Speedy! These guys should still be in their diapers!

They should replace her by Wildcat and show some kind of history between Wildcat and Black Canary as her mentor.

  28. Jeremy Says:

Of course they had to have a girl in there. *sigh* Of all the JSA members…

But i’m intrigued how they’re going to pull off Hawkman with the wings and all. I think the actor playing Green Arrow is too much of the teen idol-type, he’s gonna get his butt kicked by Hawkman!

  29. Rich Says:

Ok first thought.. shanks better hit the gym and maybe those protein shakes.

On JSA in Smallville, Smallville has to be taken as an elseworlds DC reality. There is no question that with what has been done with the characters on the show there is no way it fits with standard DCU continuity.
This isn’t that uncommon with live action or animation versions of comic characters.
With Johns at the helm it is a safe bet that the characters will retrain what makes these characters interesting while finding a way to fit them into Smallville’s world.
