Super-Articulate: This Month’s “Ask Matty” Mattel Q&A Answers

October 15th, 2009
Author Troy Brownfield

Wildcat As regular readers know, we’ve been engaging in the “Ask Matty” progam that Mattel offers. We decided in September to base our Q&A questions primarily on Blog@ reader input. Due to the sheer amount of sites now involved in “Ask Matty”, we’re limited to five questions. Here are the answers to five questions that YOU asked.

1) From reader KaiSen:
Considering the recent integration (no pun intended) of the Milestone characters into the DCU (not to mention Static’s animated history with the Justice League and comic history with the Teen Titans), will Mattel ever make characters like Icon, Hardware, and the aforementioned Static in either the DCUC or Justice League collections? Also, same question about the Red Circle characters, The Spirit, The T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, and Doc Savage. Or would these be separate deals from the DC Comics situation? Have you considered developing a Wildstorm figure collection? It’s not really the DCU, but there are a few ties to the Wildstorm universe to the DCU. Or will more mature franchises like The Authority prevent them from doing so?

Ask Matty: Our agreement with DC/Warner Bros only covers the DC Universe proper. Static Shock however, could be in the JLU line due to his appearance in the show.

2) From reader Devil Hanzo
At this time, are there any DC characters that are off-limits to Mattel?

Ask Matty: All characters in the proper DC Universe are fair game, but each character we select is still up for approval from DC Comics.

3) From reader Carter Hall
Do you do any planning with DC Direct to not overlap and do the same figure in two different lines (specifically current GL event characters)?

Ask Matty: Yes. DC Direct is a great partner and we work with them to avoid too much overlap in character selection each year.

4) From reader JSayonara
At the moment it is only possible to purchase DCUC figures at speciality shops in the U.K. Will we ever see these figures in regular retail stores outside the U.S?

Ask Matty: We are working hard with international distributers to increase shipping world wide!

5) Several readers asked about the lone remaining original Justice Leaguer: Martian Manhunter. Are there 2010 plans?

Ask Matty: We can not comment on unannounced figures. You’ll have to wait and see!

  1. KaiSen Says:

*sigh* He called Static “Static Shock.”

I guess this is how Marvel felt after The Electric Company (the original, not the fake pretender currently airing on PBS) called Spider-Man “Spidey,” a nickname that is still stuck with the character to this day. Then again, I guess it’s a compliment the series’ name has stuck years after the series ended. Still, it would be nice after all these years to finally get a Static figure, whether he’s young or old.

    Thanks.
