Spider-Woman motion comic…on HULU

Noted on Brian Michael Bendis’ twitter, the Spider-Woman motion comic is now available on HULU. So those of you who missed it, or didn’t buy it on iTunes…can now see every episode for free.

Very strange that this is now free considering the last episode just went on sale and that only the first issue of the actual comic has come out. Perhaps, this is a mistake. The way Bendis has worded it on message boards and on his twitter makes me wonder. However, many TV shows are successfully sold on iTunes and streamed free with ads on Hulu, so this is likely just an expanded distribution method.

A quick search on HULU shows that it is there!

No offense, but I know it’s not a mistake it’s on Hulu, as I did link it in the article.

It just sounds like Bendis is surprised by this action.

as someone who purchased this (a bit on a lark) - i’m surprised too. should have waited?

i wonder if this means it didn’t sell particularly well and so they’re trying to give it more exposure?

He was probably surprised by the decision. I’m guessing it was made by Marvel’s marketing department rather than editorial. Maybe it’s an experiment to see if Hulu will drive up attention and sales to either the comic or the motion comic.

But I don’t know how well it’s working to stream episodes online. Something like 7 out of the top 10 shows of the season aren’t making full episodes available online, and a couple aren’t even making them available through iTunes, making the actual broadcast the only option. So I guess there’s something to be said for exclusivity. I’ll be interested to see if this works for Marvel.

This first episode was free on Marvel.com at first. Is it more than just the one episode?

  6. Monetta Says:

It seems like a bad move for Marvel to just give it away so soon after it appeared on iTunes. Especially with Astonishing X-Men up next. Why would people pay $2 an episode if there’s such a quick turnaround to put it on Hulu?

    Ian:

So far there are five episodes, adapting the first issue of the new Spider-Woman comic.

About time. Many of us Windows Geeks refuse to install friggin’ iTunes and the DRM present on the purchased file is awful.

  9. arch 14 Says:

    drm free in 2009 - http://www.macworld.com/article/137946/2009/01/itunestore.html

  10. WebHobbit Says:

Well THAT didn’t happen. The Spider-Woman Episode one video is DRM’d to hell and back. I know because I bought it on my daughter’s PC and tried in vain to play it on my PC. No dice…wouldn’t even convert/play with Quick Time Pro.

  11. Dan Says:

@WebHobbit: for playback within iTunes, at least, the solution would be to authorize the computer under your daughter’s account. I believe that up to five computers at a time can be authorized for a given account. (Computers can also be deauthorized to free up auths.) Not sure whether this would allow playback outside of iTunes; haven’t tried.
