Blackest Night certainly stands out as the biggest DC storyline of the year, so it makes sense that DC Direct would strike while the iron is hot. They’ve lined up four assortments based on the characters involved in the big event, and the first drops on October 21st. We’ve gotten an advance look at the figures, and it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of bright spots in this dark night.
Let’s start with a quick overview. Your first four are Alpha Lantern Boodikka, Red Lantern Atrocitus, Blue Lantern Saint Walker, and Black Lantern Earth-2 Superman. These are all appropriate choices, and they’re all figures that haven’t been made previously. Sure, there was a regular Earth-2 Superman, but not in this form (new to the story, of course). It also makes sense to get some of the other Corps memberships represented quickly; I have a feeling that there will be many that might skip completism and grab a figure from a Corps for which they feel some affinity.

As a group, the general sculpting looks great. I was bit disappointed in the left hand of both Atrocitus and Superman. Here, sculptor James Shoop went for a claw effect that looks neat, but doesn't lend itself to much in the way of adaptable poseability. Jeremy Bush opted for a more straightforward flavor on Saint Walker, and I think it works. Likewise, that was the approach that Jack Matthews used on Boodikka; he also did a terrific job on the two faces. Actually, facial detail is quite strong across the assortment.
The paint apps on all four figures really pop, particularly due to the metallic effect that DC Direct employs. This goes back to previous Green Lantern assortments, and as a result, it helps to bring some uniformity to the cast. I put some previous released figures with the new group for some perspective.
I really think that this is going to be a big winner for DC Direct. There’s obvious visual appeal, there’s the popularity of the current story, and there’s the fact that it digs deep in support of the universe. Newer characters abound, and Arisia gets represented in the third assortment. If you’re into DC Direct overall, you’re going to want these. If you’re really into Blackest Night, you’ll probably want these. Things may be dark in the DCU, but it looks pretty bright for DCD in the near term.
Unless you’re a Black Lantern and you run into this guy . . .

I still wish they didn’t waste a spot on a second Carol Ferris Star Sapphire. They should’ve gone with the former Fatality instead, and since I got the last Star Sapphire already I see no need for what’s essentially a variant. I know DC Direct is covering all colors in the Blackest Night action figure series, but this was a wasted opportunity for something new with more value.

Too bad Atrocitus doesn’t come with Dex-Starr like how Sinestro came with Despotellis and Agent Orange will come with Glomulus. I need RageCat!!!
Anyway, these look great! Can’t wait to pick them up at my LCS next week!

Can we get a close-up of Saint Walker’s face, please?

As far as I know they’re not doing another Carol Ferris Star Sapphire. I thought this new one is a random one (which actually looks a lot like Fatality).

@Rebis
Now with added Saint Walker! I just neglected to add him. Enjoy!

What is the articulation like on Boodikka’s waist & legs? Does she have the same articulation as Star Sapphire or less?
Any chance for enlargable pics to see the full figure details better?

Last pic = win.
i love it.

Since Carol’s Star Sapphire’s costume is much different than her original one, it makes complete sense that they offered this new action figure. Same with Sinestro and Hal Jordan.
But I wouldn’t mind seeing a Fatality/Star Sapphire as well…and perhaps a Zamoran.

Boodikka has ball joints at the shoulders, and elbow and knee articulation. No waist that I recall (figures are at home; I’m in the office).

I’ve come to realize that, if this were just some random toy line that sprang out of nowhere, I’d be clowning it for the overly simple color schemes.
Whenever my right brain kicks in, I tend to dislike the color corps concept (alliteration FTW). I could grasp the idea of an opposite number being found in the anti-matter universe without a problem, but the rainbow thing nags at me on occasion. Go figure.

Kevin.
Go figure?
PLEASE tell me that pun was intentional.

is it me or does anybody else see that Atrocitus’ lantern has its handles in the wrong position? when the first images of this wave came out, even the logo on his chest was upside down. but now they fixed that. also i agree with Josh2814, atrocitus should have had dexstar with him. even the recent hal jordan figure based on ethan van sciver came with a green energy fist. lets hope dc realizes that dexstar would be a well sought after action figure.
