Sci Fi Wire has put up a trailer from RHI Entertainment for SyFy’s new Phantom pilot film, starring Ryan Carnes and written by Daniel and Charles Knaupf.
Look, I am all about giving a new product a chance — remember, this is the guy who raved about an Elektra tie-in miniseries, despite having a lot of antipathy for the character beforehand — but I’m pretty sure this trailer lost me at “MY PARENTS ARE DEEEEAAAD!!!!” Of course, you should keep watching to see the new Phantom suit in action.
That said, while it may not be my cup of tea, it could certainly be yours — what do you think?

Ick. Can’t we just have the Ninja Turtles/Reservoir Dogs movie instead? That was way more entertaining.

Excuse me … but where are the BLACK PEOPLE??? Are they afraid to have black people in this lame movie???

That looks terrrrrrrrrrible.

Where is the jungle? Syfy’s Flash Gordon spent too much time on Earth, and now the Phantom looks like he will spend too much time in the city. Seriously, what will come next, Sheena, Queen of the Urban Jungle?
I will watch an episode or two, since Syfy’s pilots are often weaker then their shows (Warehouse 13 being a good example), but I don’t have a lot of hope.

I wish he’d kept the original costume.

Not loving it. I hate how reimaginings always have to dog on the old look or characters. Why not debut a new costume without making fun of the fans and property?
Also, there is nothing special about the Phantom in that trailer. “Angsty youth finds out father was Character X, now youth must give up old life take up mantle in his/her own way.” I’ve seen it and it usually sucks.

Sadly, I’m not at all excited by this after seeing the trailer. This does not look promising. I was hoping it would be good, dang it.

I have seen all the past Phantom Movies several times and this one looks like a great update and should compete well in the new Comics-Comes-to-Life Superhero movie genre that has captured wide audiences.
