The Hollywood Reporter has an article about Scott Rosenbaum, producer of “Chuck”, who has landed a new show on FOX. He’ll be developing “an epic Western with a sci-fi twist, the show will revolved around ‘a gunslinger caught between worlds’.”
“What I’m really interested in is the revamping of the Western genre where you still have all of the iconic Western themes and iconic Western tropes but the idea is that it will feel incredibly contemporary and will introduce the Western to a whole new generation,” Rosenbaum said.
Now…where have I seen this before?

Okay, sarcasm aside, I’m curious to see where this leads. I mean, there are numerous medical dramas, or shows about pretty white teens with problems…why not another shot at this genre?
What you do you readers think?

Hey, you know what was a really good Sci-Fi Western series? On Fox? Firefly.

I echo Jorell.
Though, for the record, I fucking love Bravestarr & own the DVD set. =)

there was actually another show called “the adventures of brisco county jr.” (1993) with “the man the legend” bruce campbell as brisco.. the idea reminded me of that one.

Heh, for a second I thought you were going to post a Hex cover.
The space western has been a thing in manga and anime for a while too. I was rather fond of Outlaw Star.

First thing I thought of was _Hex_, and then _Firefly_.
When I first learned they were doing a Jonah Hex movie, I was greatly disappointed it wasn’t set during the Hex years, but at least they featured him on Batman: Brave and the Bold last season.

I was dead CERTAIN you were gonna reference HEX or FIREFLY. Glad I wasn’t alone!

Good luck with it. I’ll just wait on it come on DVD after Fox kills it mid-way through the first season. Like they do with all the shows that I like…

I don’t get why everyone busts on Fox. I mean, does anybody actually think this would get past the pilot stage on NBC?

You know what else was a western set in space? Star Wars.
September 10th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Like most here, Firefly first came to mind. I might also add: “Wild Wild West” (the series, not the movie) and “Outlaws” (though the scifi there seems more of a plot device.)

My first thought was Firefly. Second was Cowboy Bebop. Third was Advs of Brisco County Jr (one of the best shows ever and also from Fox).
Never did get around to watching Bravestarr though.

Star Wars was more of a fantasy novel in space. Star Trek, on the other hand, started off as a space western.

First thought: Firefly
Second Thought: Wild Wild West
Third thought: THey licensed either Castle Falkenstein or Deadlands
Since I don’t get fox, I’ll be missing it anyway.

I hope it’s good. I’m a sucker for cross-genre Westerns.
Actually, Star Trek was a western set in space, taming the “final frontier.” Star Wars was a fairy tale. A farmer, a princess, a pirate and an old knight gather together to defeat the evil emperor. It even took place long, long ago in a place far, far away.

First thought: dark tower

Fixed that for you.

Heh, I laugh at the firefly refrences. Like it was even close to the first space western, whatever propoganda Whedon spreads.
And to judge from ‘Chuck’, it’ll probably be a lot better than Whedon’s drivel anyway.
