A “Fantastic” reboot is in the works

September 1st, 2009
Author Lan Pitts

That’s right! For those of you who thought the two Fantastic Four movies starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis as comic’s first family were subpar, your prayers have been answered.

According to Variety, the F4 are getting a reboot! I, for one, didn’t mind the movies. I think Gruffudd and Chiklis played their parts exceptionally well. Now, the kicker is, the reboot will be produced by Academy Award winner…Akiva Goldsman. If the name doesn’t sound too familiar, he won the Oscar for his Adapted Screenplay for A Beautiful Mind. He also is the mastermind behind the Batman & Robin script. The writer (with apologies for the earlier mis-read) is Michael Green, who is known to comic fans as a writer from both Smallville and the upcoming Green Lantern film, as well as writing Superman-Batman at DC Comics.

Details are unknown at this time to whether or not the original cast, along with Julian MacMahon, will be asked back.

Perhaps even more interesting is the note that Fox has the rights to Fantastic Four and X-Men movies “in perpetuity.” This means they keep the rights to making movies based on these franchises (and a few others) as long as they keep making them. Thus, this official announcement was likely rushed because of some OTHER news that you may have heard yesterday.

“He also is the mastermind behind the Batman & Robin script.”

And they’re still hiring this guy? Dear God, who is running things over at Fox? A monkey?

  2. Radiate Says:

Intriguing. I thought Chiklis and Evans were the only good things about the FF movies to be frank. I welcome a reboot, but we don’t really need another origin story. Just start off the film assuming the audience knows how the FF got their powers; maybe an origin-filler via the credits a la The Incredible Hulk.

As for villains…probably Namour would be the best bet! But they really need to redeem the craptastic Dr. Doom from the first two films. MacMahon was decent but the script given for him was terrible! He wasn’t even scarred in FF2! And where’d all the rivalry between Mr. Fantastic and Doom go?!

    RADIATE!

  3. Egg Embry Says:

Excellent! Now they can jump back to the Roger Corman FF continuity!

    Or not… :-P

  4. Ken Says:

I thought that I read that Akiva Goldsman was only producing this film while Michael Green, a writer on “Heroes”, would be writing the script. I don’t see how getting a crappier writer to reboot your franchise would be a good idea.

  5. Toddson Says:

According to the linked Variety article Goldsman is Producing, not writing the screenplay.

  6. Matt Says:

II also thought Chiklis and Evans were awesome and can’t imagine anyone else in those roles. Grufudd was good. McMahon was awful. Alba was alright but I’d really like to see Julia Stiles in that role!

  7. Christopher Says:

The same guy wrote “A Beautiful Mind” and “Batman & Robin?” Just goes to show that sometimes your work will be genius and sometimes it’ll be junk.

  8. Radek Says:

    @James Bond

He is also one of the minds behind I Am Legend, Hancock and The DaVinci Code among others – all of these movie made serious business at the box office. Of course he’s getting hired.

  9. Simon DelMonte Says:

Goldsman, his 90s drek aside, has improved a lot as a screenwriter, having a hand in reasonable good films genre like I, Robot and I Am Legend.

The obvious thing to suggest, however, is that since Disney is buying Marvel, the next FF film should be written by the guy who did the GOOD FF film (aka The Incredibles), Brad Bird.

  10. Nate Says:

Sure just keep rebooting every movie, not like people out there dont know their damn origins. Im sure there is plenty of stories to be told other then origin of characters.

  11. Fred Chamberlain Says:

I am becoming concerned with the number of films that are getting the “reboot” treatment”. Film audiences aren’t as fickle and forgiving as comic readers. I also wonder if it would leave most non-readers confused about differing origins, realities, etc. Guys, just do it right the first time or tweak it to make the future films better in quality.

  12. nikki Says:

I saw this coming a mile away.

  13. Mike T Says:

Fred Chamberlain they will never be right not as long as their live action

  14. dude Says:

He may well be a good writer but the past has shown that he just doesn’t get comic books.

  15. brad Says:

    dear screen writer,

bring on the inhumans. nuff said.

  16. Tyler Says:

Now that Disney has acquired Marvel, any entertainment company (like Fox and Sony) will keep doing what they have to do to keep the rights from reverting back to Disney/Marvel.

I liked aspects of the FF movies but they also got soo much of wrong. Evans as the Torch was great. I thought the Surfer looked great and had that noble characteristic. BUT they royally screwed up Doom and I think the Thing should have been CGI.

As for new villains? Save and re-boot Dr. Doom later. Start off with Mole Man and the monsters invading NYC or Namor (good way to get him into his own spin-off) or even Annihilus.

  17. Chris McFeely Says:

Eerrrrrhhhn. Define “reboot”. Retelling the origin story? Really not necessary.

  18. Nick Says:

I think it’s crap that they’re rebooting it. Why? I thought the first two were really good. Yes, Doom was kind of sucky but hey, life goes on and you get other villains for new movies.

I admit the Hulk reboot was just needed and welcomed. There was nothing wrong with FF though.

  19. Alexa Says:

Oh please. This is obviously just a ploy to get Disney to up their offers on the rights to the Fox-owned Marvel properties.

TBQH, I think Disney would be able to handle the FF better. Fox had the right idea trying to make it a family franchise, they just don’t know how to do that.

At any rate, I think it would word best if, a) they keep Chiklis and Evans, recast everyone else, and b) open the next film with the birth of Franklin Richards, then flash-forward five years so that the plot can be around him in some way.

    Fred Chamberlain Says:
“I am becoming concerned with the number of films that are getting the “reboot” treatment”. Film audiences aren’t as fickle and forgiving as comic readers.”

    Incredible Hulk, Star Trek, BATMAN!!

    …Just sayin’…

I just hope they make it goo…watchable.

  21. Capt_SilverAge Says:

    Rebooting the FF franchise?

    Okay. Let’s go with that.

I liked Chiklis as the Thing and would like to see him continue in the role. The rest of the cast did nothing for me in selling their characters to me. The only other aspect of the previous films I liked was the rendering of the Silver Surfer character, which I thought was just plain cool.

As for the new franchise players? I agree that Namor should be highly considered as the film’s main villain, even if he turns good by the end of it. Supporting characters? How about Atttuma? Stingray?

Another big villain possibility would be The Inhumans. Black Bolt, Medusa, Triton and the rest of the terrigen mist clan could make for an epic battle film. Maybe intro a few more FF-related characters like Black Panther(rights?) or Impossible Man.
Heck, bring back the Surfer for another shot!

All in all, this reboot might spice things up with the First Family of Marvel depending upon licensing rights availability now.

Just think of it. the Thing vs The Sub-Mariner battling throughout New York City. It could be awesome. It might be titanic. It would truly be…

    Fantastic.

  22. Roland Says:

I seriously hope Sue Storm is older not buying into Jessica Alba as a doe eyed scientist

  23. Fletcher Says:

Hey Toddson that’s what this article said too. Read this blog again! Here it is again for you so that you do not have to scroll up and lose your place:

  24. Captain Firehawk Says:

Sorry to disagree, but I thought the FF films were a real pleasure. I have a hard time believing the were made in the first place! My favorite aspects of them was how perfectly the love and rivalry among the main characters was captured, and how well all their quirks were dealt with. Sure, there’s some dorky stuff, and I’m as bummed about the changes in Doom’s origin/character/powers/accent (would LOVE to see some alchemy) as anyone. (His presence in the second film reminded me of the first group of Batman films’ insistence on bringing along every villain introduced, requiring larger and larger movie posters.) I love the celebrity aspect. Johnny’s speech to the crowd about respecting the privacy of the wedding, then laughing and saying “Just kidding!” was priceless to me. I’d love to see the films continued with these characters, and their quirks explored further.

I think we’re lucky to have an actor of Gruffudd’s caliber in such a beloved role. ‘Nuff said.

Don’t forget — Sue Storm is well established as the most beautiful woman in the Marvel Universe, and it’s hard to take your eyes off of Jessica Alba while she’s on the screen. And, almost in contrast to that, I think she did a terrific job in the second film of portraying some very normal worries in the face of extraordinary circumstances.

I can’t imagine a better Johnny Storm than Chris Evans.

Michael Chiklis suffers very, very well. Normally I’ll take puppets over CGI any day (I find CGI Yodas and Jabbas unwatchable by comparison to the warmth of the puppets in the original Star Wars films), but I must agree with an earlier post that more CGI seems called for in The Thing. I might regret it, though; maybe I’m looking too much for the comic book guy. I just know I’m watching a guy in a suit. Still, what a great character. Your heart breaks when he tries to pick up the ring from the ground.

I say lose Doom, and keep going in the present direction! To the Blue Area of the Moon!

  25. Sano Says:

Better Doom with James Earl Jones-esque voice when he puts the mask on and jack up his face good pemanently, no model-rific super villain kthnzbye.

  26. Jordan T. Says:

i think Goldsman’s an awful hack of a writer, but if he’s only producing and Green is writing, then i’m on board. really, i’d just recast Sue and Doom, find a better director and we’re set!

  27. kcekada Says:

I agree that Chiklis and Evans nailed the roles. The rest of the actors were miscast — particularly Alba.

  28. Jack Reichert Says:

It can literally go either way with Akiva Goldsman. It’s either hack work like Batman & Robin or Lost in Space or you get Time To Kill or Cinderella man.. He even won an Oscar for writing Beautiful Mind for Ron Howard.

  29. Mark Says:

I would love to see a great Fantastic Four movie once in my life. We’ll see.

  30. krhorneman Says:

So, if another studio has the rights to a “franchise” like FF or X-men, what does that imply about which other characters from the Marvel Universe they can use? Does Fox automatically have rights to Namor? The Inhumans? Can they bring in other heroes to guest star? If not, what determines which characters they’re allowed to use?

  31. Kevin Says:

Michael Green’s stepped up his game of late. Kings was a fantastic show. Let’s hope he can keep that momentum going.

  32. Brylocke Says:

I’m pretty sure everyone who was involved in the movies would be willing to come back. None of their careers took off in the way they thought the franchise would, particularly Julian MacMahon, who clearly wanted a Clooney-esque leap to Hollywood.

That being said, it’s hard to cast a better Ben Grimm than Michael Chiklis. Evans was great as Johnny but didn’t have good material to work with. I think Alba COULD be a good Sue, but just like Johnny, the lackluster family angle kinda sank her potential. Remember people: Sue is supposed to be young. Not as young as Johnny, but she met Reed when she was very, very young. And yes, they need to get an old(er) fart to play Reed.

I think the villain should be…DOOM! Why not? I like Namor, but for a reboot, you gotta keep true to the roots. Go with Doom, and throw in something different: like the Negative Zone, or the Skrulls or Franklin.

For God’s sake…let JMS write it.

  33. Imperius Rex Says:

I think the superhero angle should be downplayed, if not thrown out entirely (ie skin tight costumes). Keep the focus on family of explorers/adventurers/celebrities_all the great stuff flows from that.

Petersen, formerly of CSI, would make a great Reed Richards. Assuming he can lose the weight.

  34. Imperius Rex Says:

I can also see Michelle Pfeifer as Susan Storm. Zac Efron as Johnny?

With an older cast, Franklin has to be introduced as at least 4 1/2 with the relaunch.

  35. charles Says:

Wrong FF. The movie reflects the Ultimate Marvel version of the FF, where Reed is much younger.

That said, we dont need a reboot. Better scripts maybe, but no more “origin” stories.

  36. brendan Says:

    1. unknown actors
    2. namor or inhumans
    3. skip origin, use opening credit sequence a la hulk/wolverine
    4. ONE VILLAIN, dont “spidey 3″ it
    5. use real-world theoretical science like reed is famous for
    6. have sue be an actual blonde
    7. half the amount of comedy relief that you think you need
    8. less “costume” look and more “tactical gear” look

…and this movie will be great.

  37. silvanthalas Says:

At this point, I do NOT expect a reboot by Fox to be any better than the existing two movies.

The only reason they’re making it is to keep the rights, to there’s no guarantee that they’ll care to make a good film. More so after Wolverine and their push for too many X-Men spinoffs.

  38. Maurizio Says:

Another reboot??? Why is it that every time a movie series goes stale, they decide to reboot rather than continue the story. The Fantastic Four movies were great examples and as true as they can be of that book coming to life. Having a chance to reboot a series is an unoriginal scheme to redo something if it doesn’t go well, which leave directors and scriptwriters no accountability or determination to get it right the first time. Plus the disruption of movie continuity goes down the drain. Acknowledge the original movies, and move forward with the story line. A sequel can be done well by fixing the mistakes of the previous ones without restarting everything. Hollywood needs to stop rebooting everything!!!! It has become the most famous word around the entertainment industry lately.

  39. Shawn Kane Says:

Do like they did with the Hulk: acknowledge that an origin storie has been told and move the characters forward with a different cast (keep Evans and Chiklis if need be) and ignore elements from the first movie that would contradict anything new.

  40. Jamie Says:

Namor is being made as a feature film by Marvel Studios. Doubt they will agree to him being the villain in the next crappy Fox superhero movie.

  41. Luke Says:

Good God, please PLEASE don’t bring Julian McMahon back. He’s a bad d-list actor who couldn’t act worth a damn. Remember Balthazar in Charmed?? And his plucked and shaved eyebrows are huge turn-off and distraction.

The one person they should bring back is Chris Evans. He’s hot and handsome with an awesome bod… perfect Human Torch!

  42. Rey Says:

Forget Brad Bird and his Ayn Randian sympathies — hire Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer for the job.

From: The Horrible Truth about Super-Science,
An interview with Jackson Publick of The Venture Brothers

    http://www.reason.com/news/show/119655.html

“..Reason: What’s a more sincere treatment of the Fantastic Four – your sociopathic and screwed-up version, or the 2005 movie version?

JP: Before that movie came out, I thought the best way to do a Fantastic Four movie would be to go full on, Peyton Reed Down With Love with it. Make it take place unapologetically in 1962, us this slick over-designed world as the setting, and make it a comedy. Because those characters are ridiculous. You’re never going to get a guy who stretches to be anything but wicked funny. It’s a little hard for me to feel the supposed gravity of those situations they get into with a guy named Dr. Doom, for Christ’s sake! I go back and forth between thinking whether or not comedy is brave or cowardice in terms of an approach to subject. I guess it depends on what you do with it. Certainly Dr. Strangelove was a form of comedic bravery…”

  43. komikfan Says:

Let’s be fair; Fox declared their intent to reboot both FF and Daredevil several months ago. The FF reboot was supposed to be “along the lines of Iron Man” IIRC. I guess they’re just reiterating their intent in view of the sudden attention Marvel has gotten in view of the announcement of the impending merger. This isn’t really a “you can’t have them Disney” kind of deal.

Will it be any good? Well, I actually liked the second FF movie though I’ll readily admit it had flaws all over the place. I don’t know if Akiva Goldsman and his anointed screenwriter could do better, but if nothing else at least Goldsman himself isn’t doing the writing.

The one that blows my mind is supposedly the deal that gives Fox the right to make Marvel movies “in perpetuity.” That just sounds a little messed-up to me.
