don’t think things will get “cute” or watered down with Disney either. I mean, Miramax is a division of Disney… Look at some of the films they’ve made! Not kiddie fare. They also own ESPN and ABC. Sports (with all those beer and Viagra ads), and shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Grey’s Anatomy. Again, not for the kids.

Then again, Disney acquired Jim Henson Productions awhile ago, and aside from a couple of lame Muppets specials (Muppet Wizard of Oz, anyone?) what have they done with that property lately? Not much. They could at least create a new 3D movie for Disney World... The one they have is at least 20 years old, and was never that good to begin with.

Joey Q's a total hypocrite, but then what else can he do but smile and toe the company line? I'm sure he wants to keep his job.

I don't think we'll see Disney interfere much with the comics end of things. Maarvel knows comics, for better or worse, so why would they screw up what's been a successful thing? If anything, Disney might (might) help get comics back more into the mainstream. With their marketing might, maybe they'll start turning up on newstands and grocery/drug stores again? I think we might see comics of other Disney properties, published by Marvel. I am curious to see what will happen with BOOM!

The DC reactions are hilarious, given they're corporate-owned too... I'm sure they're under just as many restrictions as Disney will put on Marvel. WB's certainly proven they don't always have a clue on how to translate DC properties for the big screen (or even the small screen, sometimes), but Disney's a different animal. This is where Disney will probably be able to help Marvel the most. At least, I hope so. Pixar's success, financially and creatively, gives me hope.

John Lassiter and Brad Bird getting involved with Marvel movies would be sweet.

@Jay

Take a chill pill dude. I didn't name specific actors, but if you want, I'll gladly oblige. Halle Berry. Ben Affleck (yes, he is indeed a 2nd rate actor). Jessica Alba (ditto Alba). Nicolas Cage. Kirsten Dunst. James Marsden. I think you're confusing knowing these names with them being 'high quality'. No qualms about Sir Ian, Connelly (who's job was to whimper in Hulk) or Stewart, though.

Winning an Academy Award is not the barometer of greatness. Just look at the OVERALL body of work (particularly post-Oscar) for the likes of Berry and Cage.

Who do I consider 1st rate? Likes of Denzel Washington, Downey Jr., Hopkins, Streep, Nicholson, etc etc

The Broadway comment just seemed childish and dumb.

I find it most amazing that I must have been precognitive several months ago. It occurred to me that it was quite mysterious to see Spiderman standing so conspicuously close to an advertisement for the Lion King and thought to myself as I took this photo: What a great possibility for a merger, A Marvel-Disney Teamup!

Spiderman has always been one of my favorites and he was effective at nearly making me jump out of my skin.

@Tre: So you consider Jessica Alba, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Hugh Jackman, Sir Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Famke Jansen, Halle Berry, Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly and Nicolas Cage to be 2nd-rate actors? There are Academy Award winners among that list!
Makes me wonder what you would consider 1st-rate actors...
Perhaps you are more the Broadway-type then...

this will push comics into the mainstream. Maybe the return of newsstand -- which is really missed by the industry to get new blood into comics. The only thing that's worrying for existing comic shop owners is "will marvel, like Disney over the past 20 years, open its own branded shops?" I can really see this happening as the "brand" will want to go forth and multiply -- as its shareholders would want as much return on their money as possible.

What Disney/marvel should be doing now -- to have the best creative teams and studios -- is to start buying some if the smaller established publishers like dynamite, Radical, boom!, xenoscope, aspen, ardden and idw so that it can have better input in to its titles. If you ask me I think marvel's recent titles have looked a little bit drab and they need to up the quality of its books. It's no good slapping a Jae lee or cassidy cover on to a book that, frankly, looks like a turd inside. Hopefully Disney will change marvel the way warner communicates with DC about up and coming events.

If the price tag remains a 3.99 then surely we should have better quality titles, paper and creative teams etc? I think that's what Joe Q said they would do a month or so ago - but I haven't seen it yet. Have you? The only book that looks like it will hit that category is deathlok. Maybe.

It's time now for the house of ideas to BE the "house of ideas" in every department.

So you really think Disney buying Marvel is not a bad thing .... give it a couple of years when every Marvel movie has that lovely cutesy Disney feel, with second rate actors playing every part.

I can see it now, the son of Spider-man saving the world (and don't forget you Spider boy burger and coke).

Lol, len...when has Disney EVER brought down their price on anything? They'll most likely take the movies and put them all in their vault w/Walt Disney's frozen head only to re-release them all in 10 years at jacked up prices and say "now for a limited time only..." and the masses will flock. As far as Joe Q, it sounds like he is trying to make the best of a bad situation and not sound to disappointed...probably like most of the Spidey followers that got the shaft when he did away with MJ/Peter's marriage. What comes around, goes around. Very sad day for the Marvel U though. The Watcher is looking down from the moon and balling right now...

Disney taking over Marvel need not be a bad thing. A few years ago they alsmost lost Pixar, but now that they've bought Pixar they've not only continued to have hits but also Pixar is moving into live action movies with a property that Disney owned, John Carter of Mars, which i think is going to be awesome! If they dont meddle in the creative aspects of Marvel's storylines I dreally dont see a downside. A few years ago they alsmost lost Pixar, but now that they’ve bought Pixar they’ve not only continued to have hits but also Pixar is moving into live action movies with a property that Disney owned, John Carter of Mars, which i think is going to be awesome! If they dont meddle in the creative aspects of Marvel’s storylines I dreally dont see a downside. Instead Marvel will have access to a huge coprporation that can help amke them beigger then ever. It could work, but it has to be handled carefully.

@Wesley - I don't think Boom! has made any comment yet, but when they do it'll probably be a standalone story. If not, though, keep checking back to the story David Pepose wrote earlier about reactions around comics. We'll keep updating that as information becomes available.

Miley Cyrus in a Dazzler movie would be the definition of Awesome. If nothing else comes of the merger, THIS MUST HAPPEN!

I know that everybody's all wound up about what might happen to the Marvel characters, but have we established what's happening with the Disney characters at other studios? Have Waid or Vado made their opinion known yet?

Just wanted to echo silvanthalas's point.

Joe Q has mocked DC for years about their Warner Bros ownership. Now being owned by a corporate multimedia conglomerate "feels like Christmas morning". Gimme a break.

In terms of branding, it's a great move. Disney is a brand associated with kids and teens [maybe slightly tilted towards females]. Marvel is a brand geared towards male teens and adults. It makes for a nice complimentary fit and transitioning brand.

And now maybe they'll get that Spider-Man musical made since Disney has a large theatrical division with their own theaters on Broadway.

So Marvel is now another DC. Joe Q's hyping it up makes him a hypocrite, considering the stuff he's said about WB's ownership of DC in the past.

Given the new direction Disney is taking (just look at the pics for the new Disney game, Epic Mickey) and I think the fears over Disney stiffing of creative process of Marvel are just sour grapes by DC Comics

The sour grapes from the DC guys is pretty funny, especially given their ownership...

I'd be a lot more worried about this in pre-Pixar takeover of Disney Creative phase, but hopefully this will work out for the best!!!

I would say that Conway has the most cynical reaction I've seen yet. Especially since he has worked for both DC and Universal Studios (as a writer for the Law and Order franchise). Makes me wonder if despite having had success with Marvel, DC and L&O that he doesn't expect much from the big bosses.
